View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr. 27 - YOURSELF IN 20 YEARS

Michael
11-07-2005, 05:24 PM
Again - sorry for delay. Graphic card problem. Painting challenges are not much o fa clockwork, eh? :(

OK, time for being a bit inventive :D. This week's challenge goes from qwed88.

We had a self-portrait challenge, and it was fun I think. Right now you are to make a self-portrait, but making you look like you were 20 years older. How to get to it - watch older people closely - the face features are important - looser skin, jaw line, wrinkles, baggies under the eyes, hair... It'll be much fun I think :D

RULES (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=24525)

Have fun.

DEADLINE - THURSDAY 21th - the next week.

ROB

Interesting comp. I think it´ll be difficult to juzgue at last. So I suggest to add a little actual photo of us to see the difference.

Hmm... some people says me that I look like Geoffrey Rush (but he´s 30 year older):

Michael

RBL - Adding a photo reference to your current looks is a good idea... but it that really you? :P

A NOTE - it would be great, if you paint the portrait from the mirror, not from a photo, that you attach.

Rob - a bit pesimistic, don't you think? :P ;)

Brownboot
11-07-2005, 11:23 PM
I agree, the photo should be from a different angle than the picture you paint, just to be sure ;). I like the concept this time, much easier than the banner one.

RBL

Michael-3DT: I don´t understad. What did you mean with: "but it that really you? :P".

That note means that is preferable don´t use over-paintings, isn´t it?

Knut: :haha:

Michael
12-07-2005, 08:51 PM
No, I meant "IS that really you :p ". I wrote it because I thought that's you one the photo :P. I wrote it before I checked who's Rush. :)

Knut - yeah.... :p

RBL
12-07-2005, 09:31 PM
Michael-3DT: Yes I´ll be like Geoffrey Rush when I get older :haha:. Hmmm i´ll keep my attractive

I have a question

why does jabba the hut look the same in star wars I as in starwars IV, V and VI?

and that's like 30 - 40 years or so difference... they should have made him thiner when he was younger

This is me when I turn 38.
5 hours spent with pencil, paper, and some photoshop for the color.
I looked at a pic of Garry Stewart
Forgot to say that Im a portrait artist.

Everyone please forgive me for even posting this, it really was pissing me off

I have eye problems, I just could'nt get in the "zone" today
I'll just consider this a warm up but will post just to show what happens when you slack off on drawing for a while
I will try to do much better tommorow
It took about 2 hrs

http://img333.imageshack.us/img333/2881/qwed88old2hc.th.jpg (http://img333.imageshack.us/my.php?image=qwed88old2hc.jpg)

Here is the refrence, I found some pics of older people that had similiar features to my grandfather and father and chopped and added to my face, so that I could draw from it
http://img333.imageshack.us/img333/2892/qwed88oldref4bl.th.jpg (http://img333.imageshack.us/my.php?image=qwed88oldref4bl.jpg)

I hope to have another tommorrow

I could'nt put this down so heres another, took about 2hrs also, and was all done in photoshop
I think it's a little better, eyes better than the last

My tablet was doing some major lagging for some reason, so I did'nt have a lot of control, so I tried to just go with it, I kinda like it messy more spontaneous

Hey, some really great works are here, guys. :)

RBL - great one, really. Good line, face full of personality :D I like it :D

Qwed - a bit chaotic brush strokes and I would make some blurring in the shading, but it shows what you wanted to make. Good entries. Paint more of your face, try to feel the shading, the way you accent the shapes. Twist your head and look as the light and shade changes your face.

Pedro - pretty good. You should use more than one thickness of the brush, it would look better.

Spitfire - funny :D

Quirk - I saved you for the last, because I think it needs more comment. Well, your work looks like you've taken a B/W photo that can be found on google HERE (http://www.adttour.co.uk/downloads/Garry%20Stewart%20portrait%20by%20Harold%20David.j pg) or HERE (http://www.londondance.com/image_library/9/9/11920.jpg) , coloured it with some different blending layer, and then you applied a "smudge stick" filter to it. Now I clearly stated that you can't use photo manipulations in any challenge. Those challenges are meant to make us ALL learn something valuable, that we can use in a future professional work. This teaches you nothing.
I accent that it LOOKS like you manipulated the photo ( I tried it myself , took me 3 mins and the result is almost the same ). If you didn't use filters, please post non-coloured, pure pencil work. I assume you have it and that's no problem for you.
Also - keep in mind that it's not very creative to make a 100% photo-realistic portrait, because you don't put anything from you into it, no personality, no mood. Nothing that belongs to you. The painting needs to show, that is made by hand. That makes it artwork.

To all participants, that disagree with my opinion, that it looks like a photomanipulation, I attach my 3 min work on the same photo.

Quirk
15-07-2005, 12:22 AM
I know what you are saying about the smudge stick. But I really did use pencil. Then I used a wind plugin and colors in photoshop to give it a better effect, but I didn't copy over a photo. Just to keep skeptics from getting upset, just make it unvotable and Ill make another one if I have some spare time.

Michael
15-07-2005, 12:50 AM
Heh... I didn't get upset. I just stated my opinion. But since I can't proove anything, your work is votable and I edited my previous comment. If you want to be fair with all of us - please post a pencil sketch of it. No offennse. :)

Quirk
15-07-2005, 01:11 AM
ok. Ill take a photo of the pencil sketch on my desk. But I wont have it for a day or so since I have to go to work now and wont have time for it tomorrow either. But I will post it before the challenge is over.

RBL
15-07-2005, 01:33 AM
Pedro Toledo: Fast and quite acceptable. Good timing!

qwed88: The second one is really better. You put several years on it. The colors are expresive. I think that the nose is a part of the face that changes a lot by the age and i think that it should be a little batter.

tokai: I used imageshack for show me with +20 years to my friends ;P

Pedro Toledo
15-07-2005, 02:04 AM
Pedro - pretty good. You should use more than one thickness of the brush, it would look better.

Acctually, I did. But I agree, it looks a bit boring, repetitive. Well, it was 3 o'clock in the morning... I was seeing everything blured, that's wht I didn't notice that! :D

Thanks!

qwed88, RBL - Thanks a lot! :)

RBL you did a grate job! I took a look at your website as well. You are talented!
I admire your style and work.

Quirk: At first I also thaught that the picture you made was a real drawing, but now...
I had a closer look at it - after all the attention it got, and it does indeed look like a manipulated photo. How could I be so blind you guys might ask? Well, because who would cheat in a forum like this? I just take anything here for granted, lol...
I know people here were a little serious with their work, and I thaught you were also.

After Michael-3DT's research, I have to say I agree. Sorry :(

qwed88
15-07-2005, 06:34 AM
-If you take that photo from google, and overlay it on Quirks drawing, every single fine detail is exactly the same, every hair, every odd spot, every highlight in the eye, if this isn’t a fake your one of the greatest photorealistic artists I've ever seen, even the image it's self is the same proportions, just resize to fit the original

I could be wrong, (and if so sorry) but this is so obviously a photo manipulation

-RBL, I like that allot, very evil looking

I dont know what to do!!

Im painting me as i am now, and its almost done- not gonna post it till its finished ;P

Anyway, i dont know how to make myself look older- i'll only b in my mid 30s
- hopefully no wrinkles or grey hair by then :haha:
what can i do? what things show u r a 30 year old?

qwed88
15-07-2005, 06:56 AM
you might have a couple of wrinkles, and your face will be fuller

3djunior
15-07-2005, 06:59 AM
cool, ok, thanks, i will try that

by fuller do u mean maybe a bit chubbier or muscular? or fuller bone structure?

This one was pissing me off to
I do have an upturned nose but not this extreme, and i don't believe it's an angle problem, I think it's a shading problem
anyway I tried my best, and I've already spent about 3hrs and 45minutes on this so I'm going to call it quits on this one

Does it matter how many I post?, as long as I choose the one I think is best to vote on? I cannot remember.

Michael
15-07-2005, 01:56 PM
Xtreme - Hey, nice one.

Qwed - a LOT bettter. The hightlights and shading is better, still you can see brush strokes, but it's better. Nice improvement. Aout the nose - yeah, it looks like you've panned vertically your head when painting it.

About Quirk's work - thank you for support here, guys. I don't want to be hard about the rules, I don't want to discourage anyone from participating in this challenges... I REALLY want to see the original, pencil work of his. What else can we do, guys?

Brownboot
15-07-2005, 10:48 PM
I agree we need to see a pencil sketch because it really does appear to be a photomanip. It might seem kind of harsh but it's the only way to be fair to everyone else I think. I feel you've handled it nicely Michael.

As for the challenge I better get working on mine :P.

Quirk
16-07-2005, 12:11 AM
The reason why the strokes are the same is because I used the same plugin that Michael used on his pic. The plugin makes anything that you use it on have the same style of strokes. The only difference is that I used it on a scanned drawing. But if you still dont believe me, no one is forcing you to vote for it.

Michael
16-07-2005, 02:42 AM
Post your pencil work, Quirk and we'll believe you.

Brownboot - thanks for support :) And yeah - I can't wait to see your work :)

Ok, i will tell u now, i hate this- i hate doin self portraits, haha, never get them right.

Some of the entries so far r really good!

Pedro Toledo- i like the one with the glasses, i think the brush strokes give it a cool style

RBL- really cool, love the expression, kinda reminds me of George from 'Of Mice and Men' (dunno if u've read it or not)

Xtreme- I love the style in this one (the first one), nice clean strokes

qwed88- it is better than before, i agree with what Michael-3Dt said bout it, i think its the shading around the bottom of the nose-
where that funny named muscle is, the dip between the lips and the nose- its very 'straight' up, ooh i know what i mean, hehe
- otherwise very good.

retard- does look a lot older- I like the way u've used the strokes.

I didnt put it in the last post coz it wud be a pretty big post

Took all together bout 4.30
Sketch took 20mins
Sortin it in photoshop took bout 10 minutes and the rest was sorting
the colours and tryin to get the skin colour right- there was also a lot of faffing around with the age- hope u like it :)

I will probably do the eyes on their own, i cropped them off this one, they looked REALLY bad

Edit: i just worked out the time properly, and i thought it was bout 4.30, more like 5.30, haha

- Tokai, I am waiting for your entry, hehe.
You amaze me every time you enter in 3D or in 2D. Can't wait :D

- Now that is a good drawing Quirk! (regardless if you made it or not)
If you would be so kind as to post a picture to compare with, that would be grate.
It would definitly clare your name.

I'm sorry if I was wrong about you man, but that last entry was weak.
No hard feelings...

(Only one thing. My scanner is really crappy, but even my scanner can do better than 280x281 px. Can we get a closer look?)

Ok i've done the rest of the face- dont like it personally, i dont think it looks anything like me, ah well- it is older:).

I didnt use any reference (except a couple of glances in the mirror), just went straight into photoshop.
An extra 1.30 hours on top, most was tweaking proportions, had to stop myself in the end.

Didnt do much to the rest of it-

Quirk, some tips for your next entry. (warning: sarcastic entry)
Nr. 1: Make sure your entry is not a portrait of some dude in his late 20's. "Do the math before you build a bridge"
Nr. 2: Give the picture believable resolution and quality. Don't use the standard Photoshop Filters.
Nr. 3: Be sure to choose a picture that nobody could have seen before. Hell, take it yourself. We don't know how you really look like.
Nr. 4: You might want to try printing the picture you want to use, and then drawing it using a window or something...
Nr. 5: Get youself banned from the forum, create a new account - and repeat the prosess.

This is the last you will hear from me Quirk.
(sorry guys, I just had to do it.)

Sorry. But I was getting pissed that everyone thought that my first entry was fake. I'll leave for good if you want, though.

OK, now that's stopped being funny anymore. You have TWICE posted the works that are really obviously not yours, and still are ARGUING that they are yours and seem hurt that we don't believe you... man - it';s like you've taken a great contept by Ryan Church for Star Wars and tried to tell us that it's you who made it.... it's getting ridiculous.

We won't tolerate this kind of actions on our boards.

Your both works are banned from being voted on, untill you prove that they're yours. 3D Total Team is discussing you case now, also.

You know, Quirk - you would lose less nerve if you would make you OWN entry. And maybe you would learn somehting. Taking someone elses work to make you feel satisfaction when other praise your work is really immature and ... fake, because the work is not yours....

PKT

Here I am... Only, I don't think it looks like I'm 39 year old. I missed that part... lol.
I am not that good a painter, so be nice to me!

Done in about 2 1/2 hours in Photoshop CS with a "WacomGraphire A5."

oK< guys, sorry to say this....

but the DEADLINE is here :D Post :)

we still have the "choose one your your multiple entries as final entry" problem (hello xtreme, qwed88! ;) ).

I vote anyway now:

1. qwed88 (#22)
2. xtreme (#39)
3. rbl (#23)

special price to ROB (#2). ;P Also all others did nice, sometimes funny, but also scary ;P entries, except the guy who spoiled the fun.

regards,
tokai
