View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr. 28 - Strange adoption

Credit goes to RBL : this week we are to paint an unusual family photo - the parents are human, but the child is an alien. The photo is taken in an usual scenery - on the couch, the wallpaper in the background. The photo is filled with happiness, joy and love. Accent it with nice, calm, joyfull colours.
Think "Men in black", think "Stuart Little" and all the other films that I haven't seen or remember right now, but you can. :D
I think it'll be fun :D
RULES (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=24525)
:shout: PAINT! :shout:
PS. From now on I'll attach our OWN SPEEDPAINTING BANNER in the new threads and Chris-3DT is checking out if he can make something for us too...
He he, Iīm on-fire! Thanks again.
I didnīt undestand this: "The photo is taken in an unual scenery - on the couch, the wallpaper in the background." You mean "unusual", "usual" or "anual" ;P?

interesting idea :) I already have something in mind I think I'm going to draw... and I say this with a little, evil ulterior motive (hoho! ;) ). I hope I find the time to make something properly out of the idea... but its for sure something which fits my interests more than last challenge. :P
But does it have necessarily to be the child which is the odd member of the family? Or could it also be the father, mother, friend, fiancee or etcetera?
PS. From now on I'll attach our OWN SPEEDPAINTING BANNER in the new threads and Chris-3DT is checking out if he can make something for us too...
Makes me proud. :) If you need larger version, let me know (original is 1600x500, but looks better/sharper downscaled of course.)

2. Any medium is allowed, as long as it can be put into digital form - scanned, photographed, etc.
AHHH! I didn't read this through well enough - I thought the picture HAD to be digitally painted :wall:
I'll make a better one this time.

I meant usual, human-torch... Usual. :p
Tokai - you deserve that your work is the face of our challenges - it's a winning piece :). As for the family member - no it needs to be a child. It may look innocent, it may look devilish, but it needs to be a child. The reason for this is to make a contrast between parents and the child, between the usual background and child's looks. The contrast doesn't need to be seen at first glance, but it can. :)

Just to clarify, because I'm confused, the child is the only abnormal subject.
Everything else is normal?
I suspect your usual, and unusual or confused
I think it is where you wrote "The photo is taken in an usual scenery" I think it's the "an" that confuses me.
Sorry not meaning to correct, I'm just confused

this limits the range and sadly voids my idea too. argh. and I already had a cool story... now my head is empty.
It also voids 'ideas' like E.T., Adams Family, etcetera. too., but tarzan or jungl book could still work i guess, but which i do not going to draw anyway. ;)

Qwed - yeah, I meant usual, normal, common scenery - a normal house, the parents sit on a normal couch holding an alien child............
Tokai - I'm sure you'll come up with something good. :)
Itīs allowed to add some aditional details such a dog or other mascots?

First entry on this forum. I hope this is what you wanted.
Family made in Photoshop and alien made in Illustrator because head is hard to draw with mouse in PS. Made in 1.5H.

Hmmm, it's hard to be creative. I will try, but I don't know if I will enter this week.

Hehe! Now I have my idea. Could someone supply me a photo of a 60s-70s family from usa for reference?

And by the way, congrats on winning last week. I forgot to say...

Hi. This is my first post in the Speed Painting.
About 30min pencil sketch of the family on a notebook cover, scan and then Painter and Wacom for about an hour. Hope its what you wanted.
Forgot to say: Mother and father were pencil (hand drawn), and the kid robot was made in Painter.
ok here is the sketch. if anyone wants a bigger scan, say the word
ok so i have nothing to do...
here's my second entry. its a strange adoption (not as strange as the first one though).
This one was made in Painter from scratch, using the Wacom tablet. It took me less than an hour.
ok here goes: the fastest weird family picture - it took me 1 and a half minutes
 :ufo:
i used only the mouse to draw this :)

Fish: I love em! =) they got this great happy happy feeling written all over them =) especially the polarbear one!
ok i need some advice - which one looks better: the sepia or the color one? i was inspired by RBL with the 50-60 look of the monochrome one.
ok last one. i promise
went for a more of a cartoon/comic look. again just painter. about an hour

WHOA! Slow down fish :P, we're only allowed to vote on one of them anyway, lol. Lookin' good so far everyone.
fish: I like the cartoonish style of the birds one but I prefer the polar one.
I foud this about hippy fashion http://www.fiftiesweb.com/fashion/hippie-clothes.htm not too good but... itīs something.

I'm playing with 2 ideas... one fits perfectly... but drawing it isn't necessarily what I like to draw (difficult ;)... the other one I would prefer to draw... but it will prolly take quite some time and the story is not so easy to get into connection with the topic of this weeks challenge. All other possible ideas fish made already ;P
dunno if I should now start with one of my ideas... or try to find another one.
It's really a dilema. But I plan to participate (as always, except when star wars is the topic ;P )
And.. why you complain? Where is your entry? :P

Wow. I'm really surprised at the lack of entries this week, even though the topic was so good!
I honestly think that most of you are being a little immature about the whole "stifling creativity" thing. Anyone who works in the art business knows that to make any money you have to work within the parameters of the client, which can be very specific, and still knock their socks off.
I usually don't participate in these things, but since I don't want to see such a good topic go to waste, I'll think up something and post it once I get back from work...
Thumbs up to those who decided to participate!

look to speed modelling too.. there are so far a less entries than usual too... prolly its because the heat in europe atm. and ppl enjoy the summer instead wasting too much time before the computer. ;)

Some people have to work and have other responsibilities
That's very understandable and it's the primary reason I've never participated, but it just seems like those kinds of things have never stopped people from producing things until now...
Anyway, the whole point of speed challenges is that they shouldn't take up much of your day ;) I've already hammered out a concept (took about 15 mins) and as soon as I color it (which will take anywhere from 30 to 45 mins) then that will be the extent of my contribution for the week! Finding one hour out of a week and a half isn't so bad :)
I think the topic this time has too many guide-lines. Is fun to draw with freedom over an open idea, but is boring when you have to respect an strict brief.
I have done the 10 minutes rouge sketch but I preffer do not show it jet cause I want to surprise you all. :smug:

I hope that you notice who is he  And the rest of the story.

Well, This is my first Speed Painting Entry ever...lol...I drew it, scanned it and then colored it in photoshop with my little old mouse...I really want a tablet....
Drawing it took about 10 minutes and then coloring took like 45 minutes...
I thought this would be a wierd adoption since erasers(the mom) erase pencil lines and then the sharpener(the dad) would sharpen a pencil...poor pencil...:(....and the mom is screwed to the dad because she see's for him since he dont have an eye and he can carry her around since she cant move...
:dunno: lol :dunno:
EDIT: If I didn't follow the rules right you can DQ me...lol...this is my first entry and i didn't pay good attention...I didn't use Human parents and an Alien Child...did we need to?

I hope not, as far as i understood the "2human+1alien" was just an example... it just needs to be the child which is a weird adoption. Else I would be in a really big dilema now, because I painted already around 1h 30 on mine (base scetch, basic colour blocking and sky is done ;) ) and there will be zero humans in it. :)
rbl
evil idea ;)
btw, as i decided now on my concept i can share my other ideas in case someone doesn't found anything yet (feel free to use, no need to give me credit ;P )
I thought about 4 ideas/ concepts in total:
- Romulus and Remus (yeah.. 2 childs... and a wolf, but its a really weird adoption, or? :)
- 2 mouses have adopted a elephant (just imagine a small mousehole... father and mother mouse are watching tv, eating cheese or stuff and besides that a very big elephant baby which plays with stones and has no space in the room :) )
- 3rd idea I keep for a later challenge, as the concept is a bit variable..
- the 4th one I do myself, hope I'll find more time tomorrow. :)

now it's done... painted whole afternoon... with the result that not only hand, but also the head hurts.
Approx. 10h total (idea/scetch -> final), yeah.. like to draw details (unlike faces and stuff), so i really got caught into it. ;P
Painted with PhotoShop and wacom graphire3. Original size is 1600x1600, didn't knew if 800x800 is allowed here (in modelling challenge it wouldn't), so I downscaled to 640x640... hope that's okay.
The idea is based on the story 'the ugly duckling' by Hans Christian Anders. There is no sofa and no alien... but lot love between the poor duckling (before someone asks: the white one ;) ) and his duck mama who adopted him even if he's not like the other ducklings. :)
(will upload later a 'not-f*cked-up-by-jpeg-compression' version to my homepage)

fishīs (#24), jayjayk89īs and Tokaisīs Looks well but I think that they took too many freedoms. The initial topic was: this week we are to paint an unusual family photo - the parents are human, but the child is an alien. The photo is taken in an usual scenery - on the couch, the wallpaper in the background. The photo is filled with happiness, joy and love. Accent it with nice, calm, joyfull colours.
And I donīt see a family at the sofa in any of them.
So I ask: What are the guide-lines supposed to be for? We have to respect them or not?
-----
Tokaisīs idea of make more pub of speedpaint challenges is good. And I think that it must to be 2D "excellence award (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=21373)" like the speed modeling challenges.

So I ask: What are the guide-lines supposed to be for? We have to respect them or not?
the topic was "strange adoption". I took the '2 human parent + 1 alien child on a sofa' idea just as an example/ direction how it could look. I also asked if it necessarily has to be the child which is the odd member... but as 'adoption' only can point to a child, its fine that the odd member cannot be the strange ones (which voided my initial idea, which was even more funny.. hope I can reuse it in some later challenge someday :P ).
If you follow the rules that way strickly we would rarely have one single valid entry this week. Yours would not qualify too, as BillyBoy is known to be a human. ;)
And anyway.. part of beeing an artist is to take the freedom to interpret stuff the own way. :) So I strongly think that all entries we saw this week fit 100% with the topic.

I always posted, that I want you to follow the guidelines, but if I would disqualify the works, that are off-topic, not many would be left. And I want you all to have fun with it, but I also want you to follow the guidelines. If you ignore them - well, that's not very good, but I won't ban your work because of this. I just feel a bit... ignored... :| But I don't want to be hard about it, those challenges are made for you, to have fun.
But I would rather you follow the guidelines. :) :p

1. fish: I think all of your entries embody what these challenges all about. Great ideas expressed quickly and very effectively. You rock!
2. RBL: I loved your idea and your painting is very nice. You worked within the guidelines of the challenge and produced a hit! Great job :)
3. tokai: I'm not a huge fan of the idea, though your painting is exquisite. I feel grossly inadequate... Though, afterwards I saw that you took a lot longer to paint than anybody else so that made me feel better ;) Excellent work.
And a hardy slap on the back to anyone who decided to enter this week! You are the brave ones!

raviasokan: I think that professionals tend to use Intuos tablets because they have more degrees of sensitivity. Of course, they're more expensive too. However, I've worked with a Graphire since forever and it has served my needs quite well. It's not a 'professional' tool though...

be more restrictive with the multiple entries rule too then. :)
e.g.: where does the vote for fish count now? When I vote #24, but others would have choosed different pic of him would fish still collect all the votes for the different pics as it would be one pic?

Tokai - it is in the rules, that all the participants with mutliple entries are to choose the one they think is the best. If he didn't - when you vote, you need to state which work you're voting on.
That's getting a bit complicated.... :| isn't it? Maybe we stick to one entry? It's all up to you, I'm here for you, guys. :)

Does that mean that votes for a person with multiple entries and which are not state the picture/post number are void in such case?
I'm not agains multiple entries, but the handling of multiple entries needs to be cleared up IMHO. :) Maybe for next challenge: if you have multiple entries and didn't choosed before deadline the moderator chooses the one he thinks is the best, would make it clear. :) So a list of votable works or such kind of nice preview pic we had a few challenges already could avoid confusion. Means more work for you, though ;P

altervista does not support if you link any file from its server directly (it checks referer and if it does not fit it forwards to some adv page). Best is you just upload the pic to the forum, when you edit your entry u see below the texteditor box a button for "managing attachements", use that! ;)

I am starting to think that it would be better if there were no more CD texture prizes for the challenge winners.
I allways thought that the reason for things like this was just to practice and have fun, and CD textures were just a bonus. When we do things just for fun we don't mind so much about how the others do their parts.
I think it would be very sad to restrict one image for user, and things like that.
But that's probably just me...

That's all starting to be a bit complicated. Choosing the entry is a good idea.
Pedro - I don't restrict the number of entries to one, you can post as many entries as you feel like it, but to make things less complicated when posting the votes and counting them - we will do as Tokai suggested - the participant chooses the votable work. If he don't - I'll choose the one that is the closest to subject.
On a more cheerful note - I've received a PM from Tom-3DT, that the challenges grow and starting to raise the level of works presented. Great job, guys!
TO EVERYONE NEW - THE DEADLINE WAS ON WEDNESDAY, PLEASE DO NOT POST ANY NEW WORKS, THEY ARE NOT VOTEABLE. PLEASE VOTE ON YOUR FAVOURITE ONES NAMING FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD. AND WAIT TILL SUNDAY, WHEN THE NEXT CHALLENGE IS STARTED.

Okay...this is my first time posting, so...take it easy on me. :D It took me around 30 minutes to do the conceptual, and about an hour to draw it on the computer and color it in Paint Shop Pro. Although, I think I made a mistake. The people are supposed to look happy, right? Oh well...maybe the sarcastic nature and overall awkwardness of the picture will make up for my little mistake. Oh, and I almost forgot...I didn't use a reference. I apologize for the crappy JPEG file. So...here ya go. Enjoy!
