I desire to understand what is needed to start in 3d design as a hobby.
Friends of mine like to ride dirt bikes and four wheelers and surf and fish.
I just want to know what hardware I need as well as good beginner software I need to try this 3d design concept.
Please give a few examples of current starter software and hardware.
I would like to join you all in creation as it is a beautiful aspect of humanity and I have a kindled passion to design.
Ideas flow naturally to me and I want to express those ideas when they occur.

Well, as far as hardware goes anything can do really. It depends on what you're aiming to do. I myself am using an old laptop, with 2,2ghz and 512mb ram. My graphicscard is a ****ty integrated geforce with something like 16mb's or memory or so (though it acts kind of weird since it is a specially mad one for the computer.) Anyway, the stronger is of course always the better.
When modeling it's mainly the graphics card that takes the weight of what happens, and when rendering it's the rest.
As far as software goes, I think the most common and well known are 3d studio max, Maya, Lightwave and Xsi, and c4d and I think all of them have some kind of tryout demos at their respective webpage. (They are pretty expensive in the fullversions though so either try to get some kind of student license.) Or just use mayas Personal Education edition and such. You could also use wings3d for modeling (it's a freeware program) or Blender, which is perhaps not the easiest to get to learn (at least I'm having some problems understand their UI), it's a really nice and totally free 3d software.
Try out demos of software and find the one that fits you best :)
and good luck!
