View Full Version : SPEEDPAINTING CHALLENGE nr. 29 - Your version of a fairy tale.
Michael
07-08-2005, 05:58 PM
This week's challenge is totally free, with a wink to 3djunior and Tokai.
You are to choose and paint your favourite fairy tale scene or character. It may be any fairy tale, if it only has your own interpretation to it, yoru vision of it. It doesn't need to be twisted like McFarlane's, you don't need to make monsters out of positive charactes. You can for example take Tin Man from the land of Oz ( or whatever his name was ;) ) and make him more original, like made from rusted metal scraps with glowing eyes and some wires showing here and there... It's totally free for interpretation.
You are allowed to post multiple entries, but BEFORE deadline - WEDNESDAY THE NEXT WEEK ( 17th ) - you need to state which one is votable. IF you won't I'll do it for you. :)
You also need to write which fairy tale you've chosen and time of painting the work.
RULES UPDATED A LITTLE (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?p=266492#post266492)
Have fun with it.

----Not an entry, just want to share.-----
This is a frame sheet of a MM Director animation about "Red Hood" for computer class, free interpretation.

Most people did classic cartoonish style shorts. As you can see my own one was a mix between videogeme and anime :haha: At the last scene it sounds a Ramstein theme during a "Destroy" sequence bassed of Guilty Gear X. All Red Hood sounds was taken form Sonic game
Ok this is my 1st try.
Moby Dick. Any reinterpretation work, is not easy with the meaning of that tale, it´s easier to reinterpretate it viasually. But I wanted to try some color changes in PS.

just wondering, but some of these aren't really fairy tales are they? i thought fairy tales were like sleeping beauty and snow white...
just wanted to clarify what the topic was, cuz then i'd change my idea...

Wow! I finally finished it! After three in a half long hours I'm finally done. I based mine on the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Her furry, red coat is actually supposed to be her own hair. Also, the smoke off in the distance is Grandma's house. Anywho...I once again apologize for the crappy JPEG file, and if anyone wants to see close-ups of the image, just ask. And comments are always appreciated. Enjoy!

Interesting topic. I might be able to enter on this one.
Good going so far guys!
Anfeo: Funny Idea. I like it!
-RBL: I love your use of color and the way you made your entry so dynamic.
The lightning and water effects are really nice, and your composition is grate.
SpinningPlates: That is neatly done, but might be a little to "furry" for my taste.
I love the way you made the hair go between the wolfs fingers and the hair-strain detailing.
It looks a little bit empty maby because of the big spaces? I must say that the hair looks pretty good though.

WHen does this challenge end folks?
I've never posted to any of the forums here but this speed painting yock sounds like as good a place to start as any.

For the list of the Fairy Tales:
http://hca.gilead.org.il/#list
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~spok/grimmtmp/
In those lists - there are not all of them, like "Moby Dick" is a legend.
The DEADLINE is NEXT Wendesday.

Thank you for your comments Antievo. It is a bit furry isn't it? LoL! Actually, I've never drawn hair on the computer before, so this was sort of like an experiment, I guess. And I completely agree with you on there being too much open space...I guess I need to work on my "background" drawing skills. So...
For my second piece, I think I'll do The Seven Ravens, written by the Brothers Grimm.
Doesn´t Moby Dick count as a fairy tale? Danm it! ¬_¬

Well...it's not really a fantasy, but it's still a good drawing.

Wow! Great work. I love the facial expression and the soft lighting. See now...that's what I'm missing from my picture. I have no concept of lighting and shading.
Plus, I have a question for all of you...do any of you use a digital pen and pad? And if so, what type? I'm thinking about buying one, because right now I'm just drawing with my mouse.
Also, a question to the administrator...is it alright to alter a picture after it's been posted? I would obviously add whatever amount of time it took me to edit it, to the original post. Thanks!

My picture of Pinocchio is out of challenges?
Michael
12-08-2005, 02:04 AM
No, Pinocchio counts. :)
Moby Dick counts as well - it's not a fairy tale, but it's a legend, myth.... so it kinda goes under the same line.
SpinningPlates - you can edit the previously posted pic. But I would prefer you post it in another .... post :p, so that we can see what's been altered. And it's always nice to see a developement on an artwork.
Pedro- GREAT ONE :D And of course it counts :). As I said - the list is incomplete, there are just fairy tales by Grimms and J.Ch.Andersen. There are a lot more.
If you like the subject, we can continue with it - in a few challenges the topic may be like... :) norse myths or greek myths... etc. :) There are a lot of them. but that - later.
Now - FAIRY TALES.
sounds great....I'll try to draw some sketches

FreaK_BrutheR - GREAT work :D. I would finish it more, put some color to highlights on the leather, play with the background - secondary filling color maybe, like cool blueish/cyan thingie to contrast with the overall reds/yelows? Nice skintones :)

All I did was add some bare trees in the background, and that's about it. So...I'm up to 3 hours and 50 minutes total. And again, comments are always appreciated. *Also, is there any format that doesn't mess with your image? Every time I switch my drawings to JPEG it dulls the colors and blurs the lines.

This second image is my sketch for The Seven Ravens by the Brothers Grimm. It took me about one hour. It's obviously not finished yet but I wanted to put it out there anyways. I may finish it, but it'll probably be after the deadline. Unless...some administrator wants to be really nice and extend the deadline...maybe? LoL! No...I won't ask for that because I'm pretty sure I already know the answer. :D
Michael
18-08-2005, 03:48 PM
Well... the deadline has already been exteded :D So I can't postpone it further, sorry. :)
Time to VOTE.
SpiningPlates - nevertheless - finish it and post it here, it won't count, but I encourage you to share the work with us :)
Barney- Funny interpretation.
Pedro Toledo- Good painting but very classic, I mean, it has no personal aportation.
