View Full Version : Audi A3
31-08-2005, 07:33 PM
Hello guys , i had the tutorial from 3D palace for age's on my pc and since modelling my skyline didn't go well i started with the tutorial.
So far i've only worked a few hours on it and i've done the rough shape and modelt (not detailed ) the front.
Allso i think that this is the first project am gonna finish
Allso i tryed making the rims with the discbrake (thx mayhemation for great tutorial) only i don't know a real good material for on the discbrake , suggestions would be cool.
Its probally gonna take a while since am completing this project because tomorrow school starts again and saturday ill be going with my dad to a airshow in koksijde / belgium.
Anyway here are the renders ,
c&c are allways welcome ofcourse.
The rims :
(renderd with vray and beach probe in the enviroment)
(allso i might draw my own profile on the tire since i can't use allways mayhemation's one :p if anywone has some great pics of sport tires, plz send em to me or post em here)
and a wire of the rims :
and my progress of the Audi A3 so far (still got alot to do )
can't show you a smoothed already since i need to chamfer some edges and then maybe i can't follow the tutorial perfectly.
A unsmoothed clay :
and a wire :
so far the car has 408 polygon's.
Cheers , Eagle

not bad not bad. wish i knew what was 3dsm when i was 14 years old.
by the time you turn 16 youll be a great modeler
and the wheels with brakes are amazin
keep it up
31-08-2005, 08:33 PM
Thx for the kind words gremlin. :D
It has allways been a dream of me to make the awesome models seen in movies/games.
And now am (trying) to make it :)
Parents aren't to happy with it though :p
01-09-2005, 10:59 PM
That tutorials rocks... it's the tutorial that I'ved learned to model cars from... good luck!
02-09-2005, 08:34 AM
Hi dude I have a disk texture I'll post it.Did you see my tut on disks?
The tut in there some where. I'll go find my texture.
There more in there too ,light setting car paint and more.
02-09-2005, 08:42 AM
found it.
02-09-2005, 07:37 PM
Thx mate !
Ill check it out Sunday.
Srry for not posting update's since i've don't have mutch time.
School started again , this evening (friday) gonna sport and saturday am going to the Airshow in Belgium at Koksijde :)
04-09-2005, 06:32 PM
Changed the material of the Rim.
What do you think ?
04-09-2005, 06:36 PM
looks good,... except the ridges in the rotor texture should go in a circular pattern around the rotor. look at the texture to see what I mean. also, consider turning that texture into a bump map and give it a small (VERY SMALL) bump factor. After looking at the rotors on my truck, you would notice that the surface is not perfectly smooth, but has small ridges.
Hope that helps.
04-09-2005, 10:34 PM
Added the new brake disc texture
allso i've added a little Vray Displacement to it.
04-09-2005, 11:14 PM
Looks sweet to me
04-09-2005, 11:21 PM
Yep, it does look nice... I really like the tire... keep it up!
04-09-2005, 11:27 PM
10-09-2005, 08:21 PM
Been a while since i've posted something.
To busy with school , sport and Counterstrike :p
Today i modelled 2 exhaust.
Plz tell me whitch you like the most.
(probally gonna use em on my Audi A3)
I hope to model (not detail) the side allso today.
The first Exhaust :
and the second exhaust :
10-09-2005, 08:36 PM
I just needed to make a render with the car smoothed (4 literations  , will work on that ;) )
Here's the result.
11-09-2005, 03:12 AM
first axhaust.. but i think both doesnt FIT under a A3 ??
14-09-2005, 09:58 PM
Thx for the huge amount of comments :hurt:
@ Ravens : Thx mate , i don't knoow :p , ill check it later ;)
I did a modelt (not detailed) the side a few days ago and made some renders.
I know they ain't the best :( but am still a newbie to 3Dsmax 7.
Whenn i post these renders ill be rendering in a better color.
The glass car was just quickly added. so i can look bad.
C&c are welcome !
I used Vray tho render these image's.
Cheers Eagle
14-09-2005, 10:26 PM
Good progress, coming along nicely.
14-09-2005, 11:23 PM
And the other renders :
15-09-2005, 12:55 PM
Am allmost done with modeling the back and then i can start with detailing the front of the car.
The fun part is allmost gonna start :D
Comments on my renders would be pretty cool
15-09-2005, 04:58 PM
Nice Job ,cann't wait to see it cut in
15-09-2005, 10:47 PM
Made a other render :
09-10-2005, 11:26 PM
Just wanted to say that i started again on working my Audi A3.
I made some new rims ( made without any refernce).
here are some renders of the new rims and the Audi A3
I completed modelling the back but not detailing yet.
I know the renders aren't the best but am working on it !
and the rim.
only need to model the brake calliper but i have no idea how it looks like and i can't find any high-res photo's of it :(
10-10-2005, 12:01 AM
Good modelling, can't spot errors in it. I like the shader you used in your last render. The others were too grainy and not metallic enough, IMHO.
10-10-2005, 04:57 AM
nice rim, modeling dude! and braking disc
10-10-2005, 02:26 PM
Thx fellas !
16-10-2005, 07:34 PM
I've detailed the front today.
Still got alot of things to add tho.
c&c are welcome.
16-10-2005, 11:12 PM
Last update for today.
Detailed the side.
Cheers , Eagle
17-10-2005, 12:12 AM
that looks great man...i envy you i'm having some problems with my daewoo tico...can u give me pls the tutorial you said u used...maybe it can awser a couple of questions
Thanx and good luck finishing it
17-10-2005, 12:13 AM
btw i'm 16 :D
17-10-2005, 12:14 AM
btw i'm 16 :D and i wished i had you skills
17-10-2005, 05:01 AM
I think in the Art world, there doesnt exist a age. Skills isnt art! Imagination/fantasy The way you can you look or see things! That makes the art!
17-10-2005, 11:29 PM
i got the tutorial of 3Dpalace
Thx for the comments.
I agree with ravens about the art thing :)
Again a other update.
Detailed the back.
18-10-2005, 01:02 AM
coming along nice!!! Great work! Still watching the tutorial ??
18-10-2005, 10:44 PM
made a few simple renders.
20-10-2005, 12:36 AM
Thx for the huge amount of comments...
anyway , made a other render test. now am working on the grill.
You got a pretty nice model there. You have to tweak it if you want it perfect, I see mistakes, mostly on the front bumper. The wheels are way too big and their placement is not good. They are not inside the car like that, push them outside, and make them smaller.
You might want to try making some better rims. The once you have now look like cilynders with beveled polygons.
21-10-2005, 10:24 PM
I know about the size of the wheels and i fixed it (i hope its better)
I allso am aware of the mesh problems everywhere on the mesh and ill correct alot of them later.
The rims i don't know am not really good at modelling rims , maybe some day i'll find it easy.
ps : are you from Belgium ?
23-10-2005, 02:30 PM
did today the grill and seams on the front of the car.
i know the renders looks strechted but its the render.
My car ain't strechted.
Something weird with the render.
23-10-2005, 05:22 PM
Just made a render.
I know about the error in the license plate holder but i already fixed it.
Didn't knew it was there untill i renderd.
24-10-2005, 03:52 PM
I love the reflections on the exhaust please tell me what HDRI map u used and what settings!
Keep it up!
30-10-2005, 01:25 PM
Been a while since i've made/posted a update.
Alot of homework.
Anyway , i made the doors and cutted out the front and side windows.
I know about the bad glass material.
@ FormaX : Srry for the late reply.
The HDRI used on the exhaust is just the beach probe renderd with Vray.
With GI on.
c&c are welcome !
30-10-2005, 05:00 PM
I now made some new renders with new materials.
Tell me what you think.
Cheers , Eagle
30-10-2005, 05:38 PM
the last render is a bit dark. and the shutlines in the front ( bonnet / hood + bummper to fender )
but nice model man :D
You are doing a great job. My first impression of this wasn't so good but you seem to be doing great. Make the wheels just a tad bigger and fix the lower part of the front bumper.
I think you should attempt some better rims. Here's a nice site with A LOT of reference on all types of rims.
Good luck. Make it perfect.
It's cool.Keep going and may I see your wire...
30-10-2005, 10:10 PM
Thx guys !
@ Aleg8r: what do you mean ?
@ Snap007 Be: Am glad you are starting to like it :)
Ill try to make the wheels a bit bigger.
And what site do you mean ?
And whats wrong with the front bumper ? or do you mean the grill ?
@ Daka: ill post some wire's A.S.A.P
www.streetdreams.org Damn I forgot the link. The part below the grill (not the grill) sticks out too much.
31-10-2005, 12:47 PM
I know about that, i just fixed it.
Thx for the link
31-10-2005, 05:02 PM
Made some other renders and added the seats
c&c are welcome as allways.
31-10-2005, 10:33 PM
you are getting better and better!
31-10-2005, 10:39 PM
Thx ravens :D
02-11-2005, 04:43 PM
Hi dude yourdoing a great job.Keep it up
05-11-2005, 08:57 PM
Thx Kujoe :D
Finally a other update.
I've added more detail to the back , seams , windows , logo etc.
Still got to do some tweaking , headlights and rearlights, brakelight and maybe new rim.
and incase you can't see the details well a clay :)
06-11-2005, 01:38 PM
Looking good there Skyeagle
06-11-2005, 02:04 PM
Thx Giant , good to see you here budd!
Just made a new rim ( some ppl said i needed a new one)
Just modelt it from my head , without any reference's , blueprints.
Will post a render later of the car with the new rims.
06-11-2005, 07:01 PM
and 2 renders with the new rims
07-11-2005, 12:14 AM
Move your wheels out more! It's a great model, but the fact that your wheels are so far inward makes it look bad. I'll be checking in.
10-11-2005, 11:02 PM
I've just made some new rims.
What do you think ?
I know about the bad material on the rim , anywone has any good VRay Chrome materials ?
12-11-2005, 02:09 PM
Again a update.
Made the healights and done some tweaking.
Still got to work a bit on the headlight material and i allso tryed a render with a new carpaint.
c&c are welcome !
12-11-2005, 06:03 PM
Realy nice and clean modelling! But on the last render the tyre is blue:P
12-11-2005, 06:47 PM
@ Mblond: Thx , am really glad you like it so far.
I didn't noticed that i accidently made the tire blue :p
Still got to tweak some things and the materials
12-11-2005, 09:35 PM
Wow looking great, Love the model, out of curiosity, you modelled this by extractign edges on a plane? you can kind of say im on a quest to finding out how to make a car :D
12-11-2005, 10:26 PM
Yeah , just started from a plane and then extracting the edges.
a great tutorial on modelling a car can be found at www.3dpalace.com
13-11-2005, 12:04 AM
Thanks sky :D I'll check it out buddy.
You need to rework the part between the windshield and bonnet. And move the wheels outside godammit. They ruin ur model.
13-11-2005, 01:55 PM
The wheels are postioned correctly.
Maybe you think that they aren't postioned correct since i putted the front wheels in a turn of 10-15°.
13-11-2005, 02:15 PM
The rear wheels are like that aswell, if your talking about matching how far out they are on blueprints i wouldnt trust em :p if they look like that on ref photos then just try moving them out anyway and seeing how they look...
13-11-2005, 07:18 PM
Added the sidemirror , backlighs , brake light and repositioned the wheels.
Does any of you maybe know how i need to texture the backlights ?
Since i don't have any idea how to do it.
Allso i need to make the edges around the brake light straight and not smoothed , any idea how to do so ?
c&c are welcome.
13-11-2005, 08:52 PM
I have found something..the stuff in the air intake (the horizontal line that holds the license plate) is in wrong position! Check this image!
edit: as I can see the whole grill is in wrong place!
13-11-2005, 10:06 PM
Something weird about that pic.
The weirdest thing is that the license plate holder seems to be moved forward on it.
Allthough it could be that my grill needs to be moved forward more.
Since the reference's (spelling ?) and blueprints i have tell me the Grill i positioned and modelt correctly.
13-11-2005, 10:40 PM
I have never seen an audi on hungary with your grill!
And the big black horizontal stuff is part of the bumper but it covered with something black not the colour of the car, so there isnt a big hole on the front!
The modelling is very good..maybe the audi embleme is a bit wide..I have modelled an a8 before and as I can remeber i have a good embleme pic if you need...
13-11-2005, 10:44 PM
So you think i need to push the horizontal things more forward ?
And do you maybe have an answer on my questions ?
(Do you know how i need to texture the backlights ? )
(Allso i need to make the edges around the brake light straight and not smoothed , any idea how to do so ? )
Thx for the critques Mblond , very mutch appreciated.
Also fix the part between the bonnet and windshield dude. Look in that ref pic how it is. The back lights need a simple texture projected with a uv map. Ur main problem now is ur paint which isn;t reflecting anything.
And the grild shud be pushed forward yes.
13-11-2005, 11:05 PM
Whats wrong with the part between the bonnet and the windshield ?
Do you maybe know where i can find a texture for the back light ?
I know i need to work on the materials/paint , i already said that.
13-11-2005, 11:22 PM
I think cant find a texture..you should check a lot of refs and draw one in PS!
The best os making the colours and bump maps in PS and modell something simple to the back (ther bulbs etc)!
And your windshield is very smooth, it needs +1 line near the a column!
14-11-2005, 02:27 AM
the bit between the bonnet and windshield has the metal curving inward, which is wrong if you look at the ref pic which just lines up with part of the bonnet and does not get wider at the bottom.
Dont draw one in PS, it is a waste of time and ull not be able to make it good in a million years. Just go find an Audi A3 and take a picture of its taillight or google it, there are pics of it from the back on the net.
Dont add a bumpmap to it cos in real life the outside plastic is flat. Modelling it would be a waste of time considering the level of detail you have on the car. There are many things which are more important and a simple shiny texture would do just fine. Most pro modelers do it anyway.
14-11-2005, 05:04 PM
Sky hi great job man :max: :max: :verts: :edge:
14-11-2005, 08:17 PM
@ Blackwolf and Snap007 BE : thx for your comments and suggestions , but i don't know what the bonnet is (am not english ) could you plz explain ?
Allso i've seen a real life Audi A3 and i need to repostion my entire grill since you guys are right and am wrong.
Thx for the feedback !
Bonnet is the hood over the engine. I don't like the word hood.
14-11-2005, 09:53 PM
Oh , thx.
Ill try to fix it tomorrow , to tired.
Yesterday made this render but haven't got the time to change anything.
Looks good. By the looks of ur tires uve been driving ur car through a field of cacti (plural of cactus).
You need to make your render more interesting. Try some more complicated materials such as shellacs of two metals to give it that gradient. A hdri would do the trick (and you should get Vray for this if you are not already using it).
14-11-2005, 10:32 PM
Looks cool Sky_Eagle. Altough the mirrors look quite flat.
Coming along nicely.
14-11-2005, 11:05 PM
@Snap 007 BE : Thx , I know about the tire , i don't know how it came but i use Vray displacement on the thread. So yes am using Vray and am NOT gonna use a Shellac material since it takes ages to render. But i do have a Fallof applied with 2 slidy different material ( a Dark blue and light blue ) am just aiming for a normal blue render , no special paint.
Am not using a HDRI since in this render its renderd in a studio.
You think i still should add a HDRI ?
Allso i was planning to render the car in a scene like this 3D model on a 2D background but i have tryed a tutorial about it on 3Dkingdom but it didn't work.
Do you maybe know how to do this ?
@ Megadave : Thx man , yeah i know about the weird mirrors.
Might change am later but am pretty busy with school and stuff.
Well on my old computer which was a 1.7 Athlon 512 ram it took my shellac renders 30 minutes to render with hdri and all the settings up. Shellac doesn't affect the render as you may think and in Vray it is the only way to make paint seem realistic. Your paint is boring and does not look realistic. You can tell just by looking at it that you have a plane over the car.
A studio picture of a car is NOT what you have there. A studio render is a render where the car is put against a background (usually dark grey or black, sometimes white) and people have the spots pointing at the car so that you get this fading affect at a certain distance for the light. Studio lighting is made so that the picture light focuses on the actual car. This is something that you don't have. You just have a very simple white render just as 75% of the people that model cars on this forum.
This is what a studio rendering should look like. Take Suurlands example http://www.suurland.com/. Notice... HE USES HDRI
Then we get back to the hdri. There are special hdris such as the mono-bridge that add a lot of emotion, feel and lighting to the render without having a big fat picture of some building or tree on the top of your car. HDRI in my opinion should be used for this stuff.
Now onto the Compite topic which means you want to make a picture with your car blending nicely with a picture of a tree or road. For this u must put ur car on a vray plane which is matte and has shadows turned on. This plane will be invisible but your shadows will show. You have to choose a background picture which should be a HDRI otherwise you dont get proper reflections.
15-11-2005, 07:37 PM
Where can i find the mono-bridge HDRI ?
16-11-2005, 05:12 PM
Am having a major problem with my pc.
So no update's in a while.
Maybe you can help ! Visit THIS THREAD (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=36909) and you might be able to help me !
16-11-2005, 08:53 PM
thats a really great car .. it looks very clean and nice !
And your materials are really cool .. could you give me your setup or make a tutorial?
16-11-2005, 10:13 PM
Thx for all the help , it's working again :D
Allthough my HDD could be getting older.
@ DxSheep , thx , the materials aren't final yet since like Snap007BE said it needs alot of change. Might do a little tutorial on it as soon i got time
23-11-2005, 09:52 PM
Am having some problems with rendering my car.
I allways get this error :
Unhandled Exeption: Irradiance map thread.
Last marker is at p:/Dev/LocalVSS/vray/vray/src/vraycore.cpp, lin 107: Vraycore::traceRay()
Pleanse send the file c:/vraylog.txt and , if possible (a part of) your scene yo firstname.lastname@example.org
press can to abort rendering or ok to continue
23-11-2005, 10:42 PM
ya i had that same problem today rendering my car
mine only crashed because i used a skylight instead of indirect illumination.
i was just skimming through the thread and read that you said shellac takes ages to render?.. how so. its just a combination of two shaders, i use it for everything lol.
i think you should render smaller images since your not going for that final look just yet, that way the render time is cut some what. as for the model it looks good but i think the seams look kinda weird, really fat and round IMO.
im using vray right now, and find that there HDRI IBL isnt that great. hard to match the HDRI it self. but i think they fixed that in the newer version 1.5.
you should really try vraylights, there something about them that i just cant put my finger on but makes the render that much better.
23-11-2005, 11:00 PM
I allways use Vraylight off and GI on to render..
And my car is fat and round ? it looks like a regular Audi A3.
23-11-2005, 11:04 PM
no the seams are fat and round.
vraylight as direct illumination, and you know you can go into your render settings and just turn off the default lighting instead of having to turn off a light in your viewport and just make the whole scene dark.
i compared your seams to this image (http://www.dieselstation.com/wallpapers/Audi-A3/Audi-A3-005.jpg)
lot of good refs here all hires but this isnt the sportsback http://www.dieselstation.com/archive/Audi-A3/index.shtml
23-11-2005, 11:14 PM
Can't view the first image you gave me. Forbidden.
So i don't have to put a Vraylight in the scene ?
23-11-2005, 11:19 PM
forbidden.. ahh ok ill find you another one
nope, you go in to your global setting and uncheck default lighting.
23-11-2005, 11:45 PM
I tried rendering my car without any light and with GI on and Default lights off and i still get the same error.
It first starts rendering but after a while in the first prepas i get the error.
Any idea ?
24-11-2005, 12:36 AM
humm.. try switching render systems and switching back.
25-11-2005, 12:33 AM
I allso tried that.
Still have the error :(
26-11-2005, 07:34 PM
Skyeagle , try this.. Check all your hided objects, if lights are there.. they still are seen by vray, causing error.. Delete the vraylight and try it with a normal omni, lights off!
but in your error i see vray:traceRay .. ? Doesnt seem anything with lights ??
anyway goodluck with your a3 :p gotta work in the bathroom now again hahaha :D
26-11-2005, 08:00 PM
Already done all that mate.
26-11-2005, 08:45 PM
well reset max, merge your a3 . and put your settings from vraY :p then you would get no errors.. only MERGE your A3 , no lights etc.
26-11-2005, 09:03 PM
could you plz say that in dutch ? since i don't understand what you mean.
26-11-2005, 10:52 PM
Maak een nieuwe scene in 3dmax. Merge, (file>merge) je audi a3, alleen je auto geen lichten, en grond planes... En dan maak heel je setup weer in vray. Als goed is moet er dan geen errors meer zijn..
My english aint that bad ?:P
26-11-2005, 11:27 PM
my english is that bad ;)
Thx for explaining , ill give it a try tomorrow
05-12-2005, 11:20 PM
Made some new renders.
first render has Gi on Vraylight off and HDRI.
Second has GI on and Vralight allso on but on a very low multiplier and allso with HDRI.
Does anywone know how it comes why my windows are that noisy ? Since i haven't added a noise modifier and my subdivisions are around 24.
I allso tryed rendering my car with Mental ray but the carpaint shader looked like sh*t.
06-12-2005, 07:48 PM
Hope to see some update's on 1 of your cars to :)
ps: aren't you coming on msn ?
06-12-2005, 08:14 PM
I like it too! But as I noticed you didn't repiair the mentioned errors:P..so DO IT..and it will be a very godd modell;)
06-12-2005, 10:11 PM
Euhm , lol.
What errors ?
I've renderd with HDRI , GI. Still haven't found a decent high-res texture for the backlight :'( and allso don't know how to fix the back brakelight.
14-12-2005, 10:41 PM
Am working on a new rim but isn't visible in the render.
In this render i changed the carpaint.
While learning for school i made this render :
26-01-2006, 09:25 AM
Wow, Amazing work! I am 14 years old and I an a beginner to 3d. Your Renders have inspired me to work harder. :)
Keep it up mate.
26-01-2006, 08:01 PM
Yeah , just keep working hard on it and someday you ( and me ) will be as good as other ppl around here.
