Hello guys , i had the tutorial from 3D palace for age's on my pc and since modelling my skyline didn't go well i started with the tutorial.
So far i've only worked a few hours on it and i've done the rough shape and modelt (not detailed ) the front.
Allso i think that this is the first project am gonna finish
Allso i tryed making the rims with the discbrake (thx mayhemation for great tutorial) only i don't know a real good material for on the discbrake , suggestions would be cool.
Its probally gonna take a while since am completing this project because tomorrow school starts again and saturday ill be going with my dad to a airshow in koksijde / belgium.
Anyway here are the renders ,
c&c are allways welcome ofcourse.
The rims :
(renderd with vray and beach probe in the enviroment)
(allso i might draw my own profile on the tire since i can't use allways mayhemation's one :p if anywone has some great pics of sport tires, plz send em to me or post em here)
http://img356.imageshack.us/img356/2505/5spokerimwithhdri2sh.jpg
and a wire of the rims :
http://img270.imageshack.us/img270/7556/5spokerimwire7xk.jpg
and my progress of the Audi A3 so far (still got alot to do )
can't show you a smoothed already since i need to chamfer some edges and then maybe i can't follow the tutorial perfectly.
A unsmoothed clay :
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/3834/unsmoothedclay3lf.jpg
and a wire :
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/384/wireofthecaritself0fs.jpg
so far the car has 408 polygon's.
Cheers , Eagle

looks good,... except the ridges in the rotor texture should go in a circular pattern around the rotor. look at the texture to see what I mean. also, consider turning that texture into a bump map and give it a small (VERY SMALL) bump factor. After looking at the rotors on my truck, you would notice that the surface is not perfectly smooth, but has small ridges.
Hope that helps.

Yo,
You got a pretty nice model there. You have to tweak it if you want it perfect, I see mistakes, mostly on the front bumper. The wheels are way too big and their placement is not good. They are not inside the car like that, push them outside, and make them smaller.
You might want to try making some better rims. The once you have now look like cilynders with beveled polygons.
Sky_Eagle
21-10-2005, 10:24 PM
Thx Snapoo7be.
I know about the size of the wheels and i fixed it (i hope its better)
I allso am aware of the mesh problems everywhere on the mesh and ill correct alot of them later.
The rims i don't know am not really good at modelling rims , maybe some day i'll find it easy.
ps : are you from Belgium ?

You are doing a great job. My first impression of this wasn't so good but you seem to be doing great. Make the wheels just a tad bigger and fix the lower part of the front bumper.

Thanks sky :D I'll check it out buddy.
You need to rework the part between the windshield and bonnet. And move the wheels outside godammit. They ruin ur model.
Sky_Eagle
13-11-2005, 01:55 PM
The wheels are postioned correctly.
Maybe you think that they aren't postioned correct since i putted the front wheels in a turn of 10-15°.

13-11-2005, 02:15 PM
The rear wheels are like that aswell, if your talking about matching how far out they are on blueprints i wouldnt trust em :p if they look like that on ref photos then just try moving them out anyway and seeing how they look...

edit: as I can see the whole grill is in wrong place!
Sky_Eagle
13-11-2005, 10:06 PM
Something weird about that pic.
The weirdest thing is that the license plate holder seems to be moved forward on it.
Allthough it could be that my grill needs to be moved forward more.
Since the reference's (spelling ?) and blueprints i have tell me the Grill i positioned and modelt correctly.
mBlond
13-11-2005, 10:40 PM
I have never seen an audi on hungary with your grill!
And the big black horizontal stuff is part of the bumper but it covered with something black not the colour of the car, so there isnt a big hole on the front!
The modelling is very good..maybe the audi embleme is a bit wide..I have modelled an a8 before and as I can remeber i have a good embleme pic if you need...
Sky_Eagle
13-11-2005, 10:44 PM
So you think i need to push the horizontal things more forward ?
And do you maybe have an answer on my questions ?
(Do you know how i need to texture the backlights ? )
(Allso i need to make the edges around the brake light straight and not smoothed , any idea how to do so ? )
Thx for the critques Mblond , very mutch appreciated.
Also fix the part between the bonnet and windshield dude. Look in that ref pic how it is. The back lights need a simple texture projected with a uv map. Ur main problem now is ur paint which isn;t reflecting anything.
And the grild shud be pushed forward yes.
Sky_Eagle
13-11-2005, 11:05 PM
Whats wrong with the part between the bonnet and the windshield ?
Do you maybe know where i can find a texture for the back light ?
I know i need to work on the materials/paint , i already said that.
mBlond
13-11-2005, 11:22 PM
I think cant find a texture..you should check a lot of refs and draw one in PS!
The best os making the colours and bump maps in PS and modell something simple to the back (ther bulbs etc)!
And your windshield is very smooth, it needs +1 line near the a column!
novoAlias
14-11-2005, 02:27 AM
the bit between the bonnet and windshield has the metal curving inward, which is wrong if you look at the ref pic which just lines up with part of the bonnet and does not get wider at the bottom.
Dont draw one in PS, it is a waste of time and ull not be able to make it good in a million years. Just go find an Audi A3 and take a picture of its taillight or google it, there are pics of it from the back on the net.
Dont add a bumpmap to it cos in real life the outside plastic is flat. Modelling it would be a waste of time considering the level of detail you have on the car. There are many things which are more important and a simple shiny texture would do just fine. Most pro modelers do it anyway.

Ill try to fix it tomorrow , to tired.
Yesterday made this render but haven't got the time to change anything.
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/7198/addedreflectioninthecarpaint0t.jpg
Looks good. By the looks of ur tires uve been driving ur car through a field of cacti (plural of cactus).
You need to make your render more interesting. Try some more complicated materials such as shellacs of two metals to give it that gradient. A hdri would do the trick (and you should get Vray for this if you are not already using it).
megadave2002
14-11-2005, 10:32 PM
Looks cool Sky_Eagle. Altough the mirrors look quite flat.
Coming along nicely.
Sky_Eagle
14-11-2005, 11:05 PM
@Snap 007 BE : Thx , I know about the tire , i don't know how it came but i use Vray displacement on the thread. So yes am using Vray and am NOT gonna use a Shellac material since it takes ages to render. But i do have a Fallof applied with 2 slidy different material ( a Dark blue and light blue ) am just aiming for a normal blue render , no special paint.
Am not using a HDRI since in this render its renderd in a studio.
You think i still should add a HDRI ?
Allso i was planning to render the car in a scene like this 3D model on a 2D background but i have tryed a tutorial about it on 3Dkingdom but it didn't work.
Do you maybe know how to do this ?
@ Megadave : Thx man , yeah i know about the weird mirrors.
Might change am later but am pretty busy with school and stuff.
Well on my old computer which was a 1.7 Athlon 512 ram it took my shellac renders 30 minutes to render with hdri and all the settings up. Shellac doesn't affect the render as you may think and in Vray it is the only way to make paint seem realistic. Your paint is boring and does not look realistic. You can tell just by looking at it that you have a plane over the car.
A studio picture of a car is NOT what you have there. A studio render is a render where the car is put against a background (usually dark grey or black, sometimes white) and people have the spots pointing at the car so that you get this fading affect at a certain distance for the light. Studio lighting is made so that the picture light focuses on the actual car. This is something that you don't have. You just have a very simple white render just as 75% of the people that model cars on this forum.
This is what a studio rendering should look like. Take Suurlands example http://www.suurland.com/. Notice... HE USES HDRI
Then we get back to the hdri. There are special hdris such as the mono-bridge that add a lot of emotion, feel and lighting to the render without having a big fat picture of some building or tree on the top of your car. HDRI in my opinion should be used for this stuff.
Now onto the Compite topic which means you want to make a picture with your car blending nicely with a picture of a tree or road. For this u must put ur car on a vray plane which is matte and has shadows turned on. This plane will be invisible but your shadows will show. You have to choose a background picture which should be a HDRI otherwise you dont get proper reflections.

Am having some problems with rendering my car.
I allways get this error :
Unhandled Exeption: Irradiance map thread.
Last marker is at p:/Dev/LocalVSS/vray/vray/src/vraycore.cpp, lin 107: Vraycore::traceRay()
Pleanse send the file c:/vraylog.txt and , if possible (a part of) your scene yo vray@chaossw.com
press can to abort rendering or ok to continue

ya i had that same problem today rendering my car
mine only crashed because i used a skylight instead of indirect illumination.
skylight+vraylight=crash sometimes
i was just skimming through the thread and read that you said shellac takes ages to render?.. how so. its just a combination of two shaders, i use it for everything lol.
i think you should render smaller images since your not going for that final look just yet, that way the render time is cut some what. as for the model it looks good but i think the seams look kinda weird, really fat and round IMO.
im using vray right now, and find that there HDRI IBL isnt that great. hard to match the HDRI it self. but i think they fixed that in the newer version 1.5.
you should really try vraylights, there something about them that i just cant put my finger on but makes the render that much better.

I allways use Vraylight off and GI on to render..
And my car is fat and round ? it looks like a regular Audi A3.

no the seams are fat and round.
vraylight as direct illumination, and you know you can go into your render settings and just turn off the default lighting instead of having to turn off a light in your viewport and just make the whole scene dark.
edit:
i compared your seams to this image (http://www.dieselstation.com/wallpapers/Audi-A3/Audi-A3-005.jpg)
lot of good refs here all hires but this isnt the sportsback http://www.dieselstation.com/archive/Audi-A3/index.shtml

Can't view the first image you gave me. Forbidden.
So i don't have to put a Vraylight in the scene ?
evil-98
23-11-2005, 11:19 PM
forbidden.. ahh ok ill find you another one
nope, you go in to your global setting and uncheck default lighting.

I tried rendering my car without any light and with GI on and Default lights off and i still get the same error.
It first starts rendering but after a while in the first prepas i get the error.
Any idea ?

Skyeagle , try this.. Check all your hided objects, if lights are there.. they still are seen by vray, causing error.. Delete the vraylight and try it with a normal omni, lights off!
but in your error i see vray:traceRay .. ? Doesnt seem anything with lights ??
anyway goodluck with your a3 :p gotta work in the bathroom now again hahaha :D

well reset max, merge your a3 . and put your settings from vraY :p then you would get no errors.. only MERGE your A3 , no lights etc.

Maak een nieuwe scene in 3dmax. Merge, (file>merge) je audi a3, alleen je auto geen lichten, en grond planes... En dan maak heel je setup weer in vray. Als goed is moet er dan geen errors meer zijn..
My english aint that bad ?:P

Does anywone know how it comes why my windows are that noisy ? Since i haven't added a noise modifier and my subdivisions are around 24.
I allso tryed rendering my car with Mental ray but the carpaint shader looked like sh*t.
