Come on, grow up! You just changed it. In your old one, you called us all hipocrits. Everybody can see that you edited your post.
Now, don't you think it would be much more productive to start modelling mugs, instead of searching for agressive images to put on them? All people here in this forum are here to learn and share their work. So if you are not, maybe you should look for another one.

LOL
Mimi-
It's likely the same model without the objectionable emblem on the front of it. In an effort to appease those who find it offensive ( and since Andy removed the original version of it ) he simply reposted the same model with a different logo on the front. :) No harm. . . no foul. . .
Though I wonder if we should put emblems of any type on the model. The competition IS based on modelling skills, so rendering / texturing are nice to look at, but not necessary.
Trivia- The swastica emblem is based on a very old nordic symbol that stands for ' good luck ' or ' good blessing '. It's interesting how a symbol
can be as powerful as it is. Considering it is simply a symbol. Ironic that what has become a symbol of ' evil ' ( for lack of a better word ) used to be exactly the opposite. :)

there needs to be a rule called: PLEASE KEEP THE POLITICS OUT OF THIS FORUM, and out of your models too :) afterall, if your texture coulod be considered offensive, just submit the model, afterall that's what this contest is about

This is not a political post,
But, Fastrak, why Jacuba must remove his post?
II world war is history, and I dont' see anything bad at posting german old sign.
I don't think that anyone will complain, if the mug has a english sighn (and, anybody who knows even a little of history, knows that great britain is the moust evil empire that has ever egsist in our world) or Rome sighn, or even American.
Remuve my post, but I think asking Jacoba to remuve his post is offending for german people, becouse many civilisaton have a much crimes than germany, (don't get me wrong, neither I agrred with Hitler polytics) and that is my, dear democratic people, a discrimination with german people.
Anyway If anyone just want to know I am not german.

Nice models, though it would be nicer to see more of them and less arguing. Oh well.
Here's mine. I just realized that there is a rule about only using a screengrab for the wireframe... is this a new thing? I either never noticed that rule or it's relatively new...I put mine together at home, but alas, I must travel to get internet connection, so I can't fix it right now. If it is truly an issue, I'll fix it tomorrow. Anyway, I think it's pretty clear as it is.
Sorry for inadvertently breaking a rule.
I hope you like it. I have a set of these at home.

Anyway nice week this is, I'll try to finally join again when I have some timeYou have proven your intelligence and your ability to grasp events "one time too many" for me to personally take you serious.
Bobi;
There is nothing that can really hold defence against your post. It is history and it is an artifact. And it is something that can be modeled or refferenced from.
But the point here is that "more than enough" people took offence from it and Andy has already taken decision on how the matter should be handled.
We don't think you agree with Hitlers policy for your post in deffence, nor have we ever thought Jacuba's was such.
But they have made their peace and it is best we leave it at that.
You guys can always private message over the matter. Else this is going to grow too much shall you agree.
Fish;
It really depends :)

Here is my first entry for this week's challenge.
I used 2 lights and a HDRI map for the Envirement. Carefully placed and tuned.
I rendered using VRay, and all the materials are VRay Materials.
For the cloth I used 3D Studio Max's built in Reactor and Gravitation.
And by the way. More people should share their techniques. This is how we learn. Take some time :D
Modeling Prosess:
- First I made a sphere, then I copied it and scaled it down about 95% and booleaned it out.
- Then I cut the top of ot the sphere, and used some time to get rid of unwanted splines and polygons.
- After that I extruded a rown of polygons for the base of the cup in the bottom, and scaled them down about 90%.
- Then I extruded the upper "rim" of the cup with 2 faces in hight, and traced the upper polygons, and extrudes them out for a "lip rest."
- I used a sideview, drew out a 2D spline, and used it as a path to extrude the handle, and then I extrudes the "rubber grip" though GroupExtrude.
- After that, used some time to tune everything in place. Move some poly-rows, remove some pesky splines ect...
- Then I made the liquid inside by making another sphere the same size as the inside uf the cup, and scaled it up by 0,3%
so that the polys of the liquid don't collide with the walls of the cup.
- I used some time again to refine the shape of everything.
- Now that the model was done, I made the materials - and placed the lights.
- There is one KeyLight (in this case the HDRI), one FillLight (a spot from the upper left corner) and one OmniLight serves as a KickerLight.
Spotlight: Multiplier 0,6, A vague tint of yellow, ShadowMap Opacity 40%. The light has a "medium distance" from the cup.
Omni: Multiplier 0,2 (very close to the cup), No shadows. The cup and the cloth is excluded. Also there is s vague tint of red.
I can't get into all the rendersettings right now, I will be late for work if I do.
Ask me if there is anything else you want to know. Maby I left something out?
I would be happy to help :D
Model made in: 3D Studio Max 7.0
Modeling time: 53 Minutes
Render time: 43 Minutes, 13 Seconds
Material and Lighting time: About 25 Minutes
7 Materials and one HDRI was used in the scene

Marty_McFly-3DT
03-09-2005, 02:25 AM
You must post the wireframe and render in the same image. Just go ahead and edit it. :)
Antievo-3DT
03-09-2005, 02:25 AM
ApuNahasapinape:
You have to post it in the same picture as the old model.
The picture has to be 800x600 in size, containing a render, and the wireframe.
Take a look at how other people have posted their Entries.

Just a quick first entry from me this week,
Modelled in C4D Demo ( still waiting for the postman to bring me my full version Grrr)
Modelling time was 9 minutes with a cylinder made editable, then a few extrudes and a little play with the Matrix Extrude tool for the handle..
Textured in 5 minutes and Rendered in 22 minutes with HDRI and Radiosity.
Didn't really have time to play around with the settings much so if it's a bit washed out i apologise.
Maybe i will get round to a full hour modelling later in the week to try and compete with some of the good models on show so far...

Don't feel bad. I have posted several models in other weeks and only had 1 comment (about the materials, none the less). All this means is that we are posting average models (neither lousy and needing constructive criticism nor exceptional and receiving praise) and they are not catching anybody's eye. Use this as challenge to strive to produce more striking models (I know I am) that will catch someone's eye and make them stand up and say "WOW!". Studying the models that people ARE commenting on is where I started and my modeling has improved a thousand fold.
Good luck.

Here are some comments on the models that "locked my eyes" for a few minutes, in one way or another:
OmegaN: (#15)
I love your metal shaders. Also, the model design is pretty cool.
Adamos: (#22)
Oh, nice! Another good metal material/shader. Your model also has nice detail, and unique design.
For some reason I want to og camping when I see that, lol.
Artecnl: (#32)
I love your material/render style. Those mug’s look very ”grungy” and urban.
The coasters were a nice feature as well.
Tojo: (#49)
Hey! That’s cool! It’s been a loooong time since I saw one of those!
I remember a cup like that from my dad’s car when I was a little boy. Really simple, but nicely done.
Aioria: (#52)
That material and render is grate! One of the best materials so far. Alsom the cup has a nice shape.
Julayen: (#84)
That is a simple cup, and one really nice render! I am attracted to it, because it looks so ”fuzzy” I think, lol.
Sir_Render: (#97)
I commented your entry before, butt hat render is simply amazing!
I also love the design of the cup with the ”low handle” and everything. It looks grate.
Justo: (#123)
You just ceep throwing them out don’t you!? As usual, your entries are exaples of grate work.
Your models, materials and renders are grate.
PKT: (#135)
I like the material on those mug’s. Also, nice render.
Lactrox: (#156)
Hey pal! Nice of you to join in on the speed-challenge action after a warm recommendation, hehe.
Funky model you have there, only – it would be a pain to drink out of. Shelfpride! It looks cool anyhow.
Hammering3D: (#181)
That is a really nice model, grate material, and a grate render! A grate combo if you ask me!
I love the way that the tail becomes the ”handle” of the cup.
Marty McFly: (#194)
Hey! Stop doing that, you are staff now! No, I’m just kidding. That is a grate model, and definitly unique.
V3XA: (#212)
I can only say, wow! That is one of the coolest models so far. And the render is grate!
It looks kinda’ dangerous to drink from it tho, lol.
UrsiNMC: (#231)
I always love your metal materials! The model is simple, but elegant and nicely done.
BKDesign: (#247)
That is a really cool design! One of the best designs so far in my opinion…
RefeeZ: (#286)
Awsome idea man! That made me laugh…
Andoy: (#309)
Hey man! Nice to see you enter again! The man who know show to render :D
Good job on the materials/textures as well.
And btw – Giving you a full version of a 3D application is not safe for the rest of us,
so we all pitched in and baught the postman away from your house, lol...
----
Lactrox:
Yes, they are all VRay Materials. I can teach you in school, yes :D
What are classmates for after all?! Hehe... And thank you for your comment btw :D
PKT and 3DVirus:
Thank you for your remarks! I apritiate it. I really do...

Thir13en_fears - Is better if U make a screen grab of u'r viewport with the edge faced tourned ON.
U press the Print Screen button from U'r keyboard, and then go in a photo edit program and push paste, and U have a nice wireframe.

Well before I post my entry, I thought I'd be polite and introduce myself. Firstly you may notice that I've been a member since November 2004 but only posted once....... The reason, well basically I've never had the guts to enter the competitions because everyones models seem to be so good and i didn't think mine were up to scratch.
Anyways on with things. I'm 20 years old from the UK and I'm currently studying Computer Games Art at the University of Teesside. I moving onto my second year and with it being a games course we mainly learn Low Poly Modelling so this is sort of out the usual for me but I'm learning.
I only started modeling when I started Uni so its coming up to a year very shortly. I know very minimum about texturing at the moment because I've had to teach myself. I also know very little about modelling organic models. but I'm a fast learning. I'm more of a box modeller.
Anyways heres my first ever entry, how you all like it:

This is my entry. Hope you guys like it.
Software Used: 3D Max 7
Modeling: 25mins
Texturing & Lightning: 6mins
Rendering: 6mins
A few more that popped out at me...
fish - Very clean models. Excellent work!
ApuNahasapinape - I really like your render! I hope you get the wire in there so it qualifies.
Antievo - Nice job on both the modeling and render!
Adamos - Many nice entries yet again this week! Great work!
Deto - Not that good??? Looks quite nice if you ask me. Excellent work!
hammering3D - lol, I like the zoo keeper too. I think you've done an excellent job with your entries of capturing a style within a somewhat tight theme. Great job!
xcessi - I tawt I taw a tweety bird? I did, I did taw a tweety bird. Nice work!
Ok, I thought it would be good to go ahead and do a more traditional mug too, so here's my second entry. Here I found it useful to add geometry for the handle by adding a couple of subdivision layers and extracting the final mesh to work from further. So, here again I've added a wire before "any" subdivision was done, just to be safe.

hyelife sinple and very nice indeed good job :D
Délé nice model, render and textures you even did the white rim bit on the bottom :O
[EDIT] the whole scene was modeled within the time limit. one mug its self took about 20 mins to do the other four are just clones. rest of the time was spent on the stand and wall / floor. the main top part of the stand is made from a cyclinder with bend and two ends pivot from edge to give 90 degrees down then extuded and sides are just cyclinders from bottom to top.
heres my third entry for this week
Black
03-09-2005, 09:47 AM
It'd be really cool if there was a way to pull it out from the bottom.
Now you just use, wash and put back the top one at all times. :)
It is a good idea to note on your post that you spent the given time for the scene with the stand included.
Else only your mug shall be judged to have been modeled in the given time limit.
Good luck;

Here's my first entry this week, hopefully i'll get another one done after the weekend. My dad's happy that this one is finished, as he now can have his mug back and finally have a mug of coffee:)
The modelling was done using spline lathe to get the basic shape, the rest was then tweaked in editpoly. The lighting also uses Ambient occlusion, just so i could tweak the shadows in Photoshop. I have to say i'm learning far more about lighting and materials in these speed modelling challenges than i am modelling, but then as long as im learning something and having fun at the same time its got to be good:)
Welcome to the forums Deto, first thing I thought of when I saw your entry was "mug", lol, sooo nice model and I like your materials.

Some serious smoothing issues killed my last design (was trying to smooth the handle, took me a hour to get it right =/ going to look up some tutorials about smoothing for sure :smug: ) so I decided to go back to basics.

I must say I'm impressed with the variety of concepts, both new and old, and the care taken to what some might assume as a simple subject. Very creative works here and the care taken in presentation keeps getting better and better. I have especially enjoyed seeing the works of some of the members that have been around for a few challenges. Your improvement in modeling skills and even texturing/lighting has increased dramatically, in my opinion. Keep it up, everyone. Good Job.
And for all the new members to the forum, it's great to have you with us and I look forward to seeing more and watching you grow.

Marty, You brought up a good point. Because many people have used this forum to improve their skills, good critiques really do help.
Also, for those of you that have gotten help, by way of tutorials or techniques or how-to's, let them know by giving them a rep point. And when you do, make sure you let them know why. It'll make them feel so warm inside (well maybe not, but it's a nice thing to do)

Marty, it took about 20 minutes - definitely a once a week job!
Couldn't agree more re the above - so here goes! Moes, you can improve the quality of your shadow, which looks kinda blocky, by changing the size of the shadow map in the rollout for your shadow casting light. Go for a higher value, say 1024. There! Constructive criticism!

Hello this si Mug no.4 from me.
I was tired today, and want to have some fun, so I open max, open Marty clock program, and start modeling without references or without knowing what my mug will look in the End just know that I wish a model that croom will look good on it.
So it take me 45 min, but I plane it on the way after put one detaile I think hmm what it look best now, and so on.
The main part is a lathe, then convert to edit poly, then add details on it, some edge extruded and rotate, some poly extruded etc, even the legs are extruded from main part so thats way I not separate them in the wireframe.
On the top of the legs are some sphere with only 8 side, then convert to edit poly and chanfer the endge and mssmoot (I love how crom look on that caind of object with edges )
At the botom of the legs is and cilinder.
Then I cover the main part with Circles, I left only one in the wire to not make the wire to dense, cause ther are just circles.
The handel is made with splines then poly convert and extrude.
The 2 little square in the wireframe, make the transition betwen main part and handle in the Unseparated model.
hope U like it.

No one has ever commented on my stuff.. Ever. Kinda discurages me from posting, because I think people don't like my stuff.
Don't get discouraged. It can happen. But I'll give you a little tip on how to get comments. Pretty easy.
First: Ask for them....I know it seems silly, but ask specifically for what you want.
Second: Comment on others. I have noticed that you have not posted any comments to other peoples work here in the challenge forums. We all like feedback, good or bad. And sometimes the best way to get them, is to give them. But try to make it as constructive as possible.
Third: Many may not comment on posts that are not entries. In this challenge, your said it wasn't an entry. Strive to make sure what your entry has met all the rules, and you may start getting some feedback.
Hope it helps, and hang in there....now, let's see another entry :)

Moe's - ok, I'm not so good, and verry rooky on shadows :(, my goals is to improve my modeling for now. But maybe this might help U, I see U use default scanline so try this.
-Make a box or plane under u'r model, put a standart max material on it with withe color.
-Arange the model nice to sit above the plane or the box, like on a table.
-Delet all light in the scene
-make a skylight, in the tot viewport and rise it up form the model.(live the setings default)
-make a target spot to drop in diagonal to the model, turn shadow ON, and chose shadow map (no change to it) go to Avanced Effects and unchek Difuse and leave only Spectacular. other setings leave default.
-go to avanced lighting in the render dialog an chose light trace (hope is stil there in max 7), make shure is active and the sky is ON. Leave the rest default.
-render the scene, but it will take a while on u'r P3, till about couple off mounts ago I use a P3 500mhz, Riva tnt2 32mb, 64 Ram. And almost all my models where presented like I was told U, with light trace and default Scanline.
Offcorse maybe other user they slap me because maybe this is a bad advice, but work nice for me. Let me know if work nice for U to :D.
This tutorial is not descovered by me, I read it long time ago and help me alot to present my models in a good decent way. But now I can;t find the source from where I read it, but if I find the source I post the link to the original autor.
Hi!
Clean model melania, simple but nice, also in materials, render & view of camera very nice, thanks for it!

Moe's i love the improuvement you made...it is a big change from you first entry...it's very original and i love the texturing...keep up the good work(sry for the late reply)
Moe's if your just looking to improve your rendering and your using Mental Ray in Max7 this Tutorial might help.

It's about HDRI not shadows but it gives you scene to work with and decent render settings.
Hope it helps.

Well, I'm procrastinating on my homework. So I thought I'd take a break and model the mug I have in front of me.
VERY plain and simple, compared to many of the entries here. But it does the trick for me.
It is insulated to keep the mug from getting warm with hot liquids, and prevents condensation with cold. Plus it can hold an entire can of soda with ice in one shot.
Just a lathe object for the main mesh and box modeling with the handle.
Lighting was done with GI and an hdri map.

Ok, I gotta say something, and this applies to MANY people here.
WHY THE HECK ARE THE IMAGES SO SMALL!!!!!
Why are you not using the maximum image size available?!?!?!
Too many at 640 x 480 are coming in. Give yourself some credit people, and let us SEE your work.
800x600
let me type it again
800x600 or (600x800)
It is HIGHLY recommended you use this size to your advantage. Think of your portfolio, if anything. You all spend the time creating some truly wonderful entries, and you enter such a small image, it's hard to see. And will make judging that more difficult.
Man if I could, I would submit the size of the entire page, so the limitations of
800x600
should be used when you can.
and if the 100k file size limit that has you down. Let us know....many here, including myself, know the process that will keep you in limits and have a great entry.

Agamemnwn: If you wish to share your works in that manner, start a new thread in the WIP section of the forums. This should mainly stay a place for entries. Seeing as how you've already posted that particular model in a previous post as an entry... this post will be considered a double post. But, if you take it down now... no harm... no foul. :)
