NOT AN ENTRY

Attempted another model but failed miserably.. :wall: :wall: :wall:
I could not weld some of the vertices... :(

Can anyone tell me why this happened??

I welded some but the others refused to be welded.... even fter i increaed teh threshold :( :( :(

Moe's
04-09-2005, 12:44 PM
Xcessi,it is weird, it usually happens to me when i turn off back facing so maybe this is the case, but i think it would have looked a nice duffy duck MUG

xcessi
04-09-2005, 01:14 PM
Moe how do I turn on/off backfacing? Is that the same as the 'Ignore Backfacing'??

Even with the Ignore Backfacing box unchecked.. it still does not weld..
I tried selecting the two vertices alone and even then...nothing. :(

Moe's
04-09-2005, 01:22 PM
xcessi, yeah ignore back facing, ok check this maybe you did a weld for 2 vertics and they became to show as one and then you weld them with another 2 this way it waont work. i mean you weld 2 then you weld another 2 then you try to weld all 4.im just trying to think from an observers point of view

xcessi
04-09-2005, 01:40 PM
NOT AN ENTRY

Moe I just figured out the problem...I'm adding some textures to the model to post in a short while...

I'm not sure if this is the same thing that happened to you..
• The vertices that did not weld had faces attached to them...
• I had to delete the faces.. then weld the vertices..

posting am image to illustrate

moe's i thinc there is a rule that u cant just modify the lighting setup, and call it another entry, new models are needed for all new entries :D
however ur entry is cool :D justthe color isnt very nice :S and the way the handle is attached to thebody of the mug is strange :dunno:

btw, what happened to the old admins when fastrak and mc_fly are admins now?

mizako

This is my second entry. The mug is Kuksa. It is a traditional finnish mug hand-made of wood.

Moe's
04-09-2005, 02:15 PM
ApuNahasapinape, well i checked with admins and they said as long as i dont change the model it is ok.as for the handels you are right i tried to connect them and actually but it didnt serve the concept so i found that this would be the best way.
Yahn: this was my second entry actually and it was posted on page 28 but after the modification i deleted the old and posted the new one.and put it as entry 3 since there is entry 2, so i did it way before you.

Apu? Moes? Is there a 'Simpsons' theme developing on here?

Wait, that's given me an idea - how about modelling 'The Simpson's' for a theme one week?

Apu, isn't your surname spelt Nahasapeemapetilon? Sorry - I'm a bit of a stickler when it comes to the Simpsons! By the way, your model rocks!

Moe's - I'm so glad that U like my advice, and that it help U, I like how light trace make the model more real, and look like it actualy siting on the flor and not fly...and then make the model to not look flat and give it 3d Volume.
I like u'r render, and the best I like the last one #497, because I like the model be on a white plane when using light trace. An like Clamps said, it look liek a Candy mug :), is funny and plesent for the eye's

Hi all,

Lots of great mugs :) good to see!

Ok, had an idea while playing Battle Field 2. Was playing a map that had two huge nuclear power station cooling towers and though that would be a great shape for a mug!

Then I had another idea and thought wouldn't it be a laugh to make a nuclear power station but replace the cooling towers with my mug :) So here it is, I know the scene is basic (still took me a few hours, mostly playing with particals) but only the mug is an entry (only what the wire shows).

Hope the scene gives everyone a giggle :) I was fairly pleased with the mug though so enjoy.

Software: 3DMax 7
Modelling time: 45 minutes

(note: had to play with compression level to get image down to 100k but just made it and no noticable loss in quality).

Moe's, that's looking a lot nicer! I've found that a nice render get's you way more comments. I believe you used the max scanline renderer there, and it gave you a good result, but if you have a version of Max that carries Mental Ray, give that a try.

Sidaho. Thanx i appreciate it, i will look for a tutorial on the mental ray. sorry for the bother

Hey, No bother! Also, I would suggest that no tutorial is necessary. Mental Ray is so tightly integrated with Max that you should be good to go with your current settings. Just load up the Mental Ray renderer in the 'render' rollout, and away you go!.

The one thing I would do though is use a Mental Ray light shader. Select your light, then go to it's parameters. With Mental ray loaded, you will now have a couple of new parameters - one is Mental Ray Light Shader. Open this up, click enable, then, click the box that says 'none' and choose a shader. I like the Ambient/reflective occlusion, which gives a nice effect.

Moe's
04-09-2005, 05:10 PM
Sidaho Im using Max 7, and this might sound weird but there is no mental ray in the render rollout.
& the reflectiv ambient is showing in the Incompatible

Really really great entries so far people!
It's hard to choose one from it all! :smug:

Yahn,
Quite interesting your second mug, but the shader you created feels a little like plastic.
You should try increasing the fresnel values and IOR in the Ray Mirror and Ray Transp.
Also, higher the value for refraction in the Blinn Specular shader, it should help getting a better result.

Have you consider rendering your glass object with Yafray? You will feel the difference. :!!!:

Oke entry no.3

This is a hightec space mug with gravitation stabilyzers, heating system and a comper controlled liquid-warmth detector wich will messure the heat of the liquuid and will show it on the display on the front. This mug automaticly heats your drink when it get's to cold and indicates how you drink currently is (H=Hot, C=Cold, M=Moderate).

The Super Grip on this mug will assure that you will have full controle over your mug, even in space!

K, so much for the crap-talk :P If I have time I will make a more usefull version, this one looks kind of hard to drink from without spilling :P

Stats:

Software: 3D Studio Max 6 + Photoshop CS
Model time: 25min (cause extrude broke, had to model the grip by hand :P)
Texture / Lightning: 5 min
Rendertime: (640x480) 8.01 min
Rendered with: Mental Ray

Need to play catch up here.....so many pages of posts since I slept. (yes I do sleep from time to time)

doncha_magoso: Glad you found your way here. Hope to see more

Villane: Sun...? Is that the shiny thing outside? lol

dudeman: Question on the glass stuff....well, personally I find it difficult to explain my understanding on it. So I'll give it a shot, but Marty and Black may be able to clarify better. First let me say this is a modeling challenge and materials do not come into play except for certain judging aspects where it might be too close to call. So if all models where rendered with just a clay version, how would you know? So my thought is this. If a mug is made completely out of glass, the handle would not provide much protection from hot liquids. The temperature would easily transfer to the handle and could become hot. My perception is the handle is the key between a cup and a mug. Mugs may also have a type of insulating feature to them also, so handling the main body of a mug may not have the temperature transfered to it as much. That's why an all glass mug may not be as effective...keywords here are "may not".
Now there are some enties here that are glass but not the handle. IMHO, that is an acceptable approach. But I'm obligated to defer to Black_3DT clarification on Post #46 which states:

Okay...
seems that there is a situation AGAIN!
If it is glass it is NO!(Edit: Pyrex IS acceptable)
If it is thin it is NO!
If it is clay and unglazed it is NO!
If it has NO handles it is NO!

I would have really liked to brief you guys on the historical development on WHY Mugs even got created and how it distinguishes form the rest.
But the second step from there would be a war.
And those into ethymology or historics of cutlery, just do a search ... there are a mass amount of sites out there.

VERY briefly, if your entry shall happen to fit into the above listings, reconcider!
I know what I am talking about.

Black

There IS a distinct difference between cups, mugs and jugs. I have seen many that fit into the cup and jug category. I feel initial clarifications should be enough, and do not see the need to be picking out individual entries and judging at that time, wheather is is suitable or not. My role here is mainly to make sure specific rule objectives have been reached, such as software stated, modeling time and clear wireframes.

Lactrox: :) Welcome, welcome, welcome.

ThaTyger: and the same goes to you as well. Glad your here.

Apu: My apologies...Welcome to the forums

We are all friends here and enjoy an absolutly superb forum with a lot of good humoured banter. I am sure i speak for all when i say keep coming back and enjoying the forum and posting your work for all to see.

That the structure of a "Caffeine Molecule" on it right?
Only it is up-side-down/flipped...

Yes, it's supposed to be the molecular structure of cafeine. I hope it's not something explosive now. BTW, excellent chocolate mug!

Haha, I knew that was a Caffeine Molecule! It's what ceeps me going late at night.
It was a little hard to get at first, because it was mirrored, but the idea is really cool :D

Didn't think mug's had any history behind them so I looked it up, this is a Cider Mug from the 19th century. It's what the country bumpkins traditionally used to drink their Scrumpy from. Some of them were pretty big, good to quench a thirst on a long day on the farm :)

Hello

Here it is my #5 Mug:

Moe's give me some scrach with ideea for an mug, that was based from a cilinder put on diagonal and stay On 2 legs...so I think what to model from that idea, then I say ok I'll model a mechanical robot made from that cilinder, and the 2 foot's I'll made them weel's...then searching for some inspiration I find R2D2 :D... and BANG !!! I combine the 3 ideeas and come Up with this R2D2 Mug Clone

...
The wire is little dense in lines because ther is NO mssmoot and I only chanfer the edge to give it a smoot look, so I can go back, the only smoot part is the uper leg (I smoot it because only after that I have the ideea to use only chanfer and not smoot) but I was make a boolean extrude on it so can't go back from that eider, the circle is smoot cause have manny sides.

hope U like it ;P

Just to point out something about glass mugs. I have a few glass mugs at home that are designed to hold hot drinks and they work perfectly fine. One thing to point out tho, is that they have solid glass handles which the liquid can't travel through as opposed to hollow handles.

Hope this helps with what can be accepted.

Hey frederius nice looking entry,

Just one point to make though, with the reflection its making the metal of the mug look a little weird, it doesn't quite look like a convincing metal, think it might be the angle of the render. anyways just a little constructive critisism.

Anyway keep up the good work.

subcrocodile : thanks and well, im pretty new with Maya, but my technigue with that mug was very simple, theres 3 major curver on it.. the main profile , witch i revolved. then extruded one curve along handles rail curve, rest was most like intersecting, trimming , and tweaking the surfaces.
offcourse , sometimes its better to use primitives as a basic shape, but i think that in this case, it were easier to use just a splines... hope this helped a bit....
gotta run to the work now... have a nice day everyone

cara-rj: Good to see some other blender users here. If you are interested in a blender users only challenge site Stop by BlenderBattles (http://battles.mudpuddle.co.nz/index.php

dmelero: Nicely done. rember that the wireframe should be only the things to be judged, and before any subsurfacing if possible. The judges look them over pretty closely.

3Dvirus: I definitly like the regular cylinder Honeycomb mug better than the bulging one.

The plan would have been perfect with a protection guard rigth where the handle is... or at least to not have a ressistance cage there.
This way you have to be veeery careful drinking that thing!

A lot of wonderful mugs (As to be expected); and unfortunately a few very well rendered Jug's as well as a few impressive cups... now actually, we even have a pitcher!

fasth, would you mind to share the secret of your renders's awesomeness? :shy:
What renderer do you use with what GI-calculation method? And what about the DoF?

Ok, like this; it's very simple. And with very, I mean super.
I use v-ray, with the kitchen probe as my environment. I have all the original settings for GI, antialiasing etc, just click on on the things I need. For the light (apart from the hdri) I've used to vraylights, one on each side of the scene, and one of those is a little bit brighter than the other one. For the depth of field I use zdepth to get they depth and then I add it using the zdepth info as an alpha map which I load into the lensblur filter in photoshop, adding the depth of field there.
If you understand anything from this explanation I'm very happy, otherwise. Well, ask and ye shall recieve.

well fasth i asked the same question before, and i guess i got my answer now, but i got to be honest i didnt understand the part about adobe photoshop and the relation with zdepth. maybe you could elaborate on that.
Oh sorry :shy: I never saw that post.
In max, open the render dialog (F10 / ctrl+alt+right click / rendering>>render (you get the point :P)) and then click the 'render elements' tab. Click the 'add' button in the render elements part and choose zdepth. scroll down in this tab now to see two different settings which you may have to change, 'Z min' and 'Z max' , where min is the minimum distance and max is the maximum. When you are done, click render. When your scene has finished rendering you get to pictures; one with the render and one grayscale picture. save both and open them in photoshop. and in photoshop, load up the render, then click the channels layer - click add new channel and copy paste your grayscale picture there (the zdepth one).
Now go back to the layers palette and make a copy of your render layer, and then go filter > blur > lens blur (this filter is only available in ps cs and up btw) and then play with the settings. there is a source rollout where you select your new alpha layer. depending on where you click in the preview your depth of field change to that point which you clicked (if you added the zdepth grayscale)
Hope that clears it up a little. Ask again if more issues should arrive. And sorry for not seeing your post :shy:

Hi all, some very good submissions this week!

Ive gone with the idea of a chinese style mug, imagine it filled with warm chinese tea, not 100% sure it follows the rules for this week so if not just say and i'll have another go :)

pretty work with tetris. nice job.

subcrocodile : thanks and well, im pretty new with Maya, but my technigue with that mug was very simple, theres 3 major curver on it.. the main profile , witch i revolved. then extruded one curve along handles rail curve, rest was most like intersecting, trimming , and tweaking the surfaces.
offcourse , sometimes its better to use primitives as a basic shape, but i think that in this case, it were easier to use just a splines... hope this helped a bit....
gotta run to the work now... have a nice day everyone

thanks much for reply,i got my answer.

I tried to duplicate a bit of Sub croc's style. I admit that mine would be a pretty bad entry of his.. if it could be one at all.

Ok, like this; it's very simple [...] adding the depth of field there..
Thank you very much for sharing :) I tried it on finalRender at work today but couldn't test the DoF-stuff because the company is out of photoshop CS-licenses so I'm the one who has to use ps6 >__<;;
Tomorrow when I'm at home i can test it with vray and psCS..
However, If you're interested, this is what I came up with: http://www.deviantart.com/view/22578600/
I think the noise would look lotsa better if I'd use GrainSurgery or just paste an overlay-layer of real film-noise on top of it and mask it with the depthmap...
EDIT: oh forgot to point one thing out.. When adding DoF using a depthmap there always will be some blurring on the edges of nearby objects if the occluded object(s) is/are far away from it :/ Anyone have a smart solution for this?

But CS is easier and better
I've got psCS at home and in a few weeks at my workplace too. No sense in investing on that filter if it's worse than photoshop's lens blur..
And while we're at it, Richard Rosenman's Diffuse glow, Vignette corrector and Lens distortion corrector are really nice when spicing up renders :)
Also the Spherical mapping corrector comes handy every once in a while.

Oh and btw mboi, Your latest entry is wonderfully rendered! Is the floor texture on TotalTextures cd:s? if so, which one?

Ok, I gotta say something, and this applies to MANY people here.

WHY THE HECK ARE THE IMAGES SO SMALL!!!!!

Why are you not using the maximum image size available?!?!?!

Too many at 640 x 480 are coming in. Give yourself some credit people, and let us SEE your work.

800x600

let me type it again

800x600 or (600x800)

It is HIGHLY recommended you use this size to your advantage. Think of your portfolio, if anything. You all spend the time creating some truly wonderful entries, and you enter such a small image, it's hard to see. And will make judging that more difficult.
Man if I could, I would submit the size of the entire page, so the limitations of
800x600
should be used when you can.

and if the 100k file size limit that has you down. Let us know....many here, including myself, know the process that will keep you in limits and have a great entry.

Fastrak (who has recently gone blind from looking at itsy-bitsy images)

In my case the 100kb limit is the problem. all my entries weight about 97kb :) so the image you see i have made it as big as possible. if i use lower quality it get too blurry and doesn't look good.

i think a solution might be enabling IMG tags but i guess there's a reason why they are disabled. but i hope something can be done about it because

ill take a look on how my jpg are compressed an see if i can get them better compresed though :)

last entry for me for this week. This is a multi purpose mug. Thermal plastic outside container (fast SSS) with chrome handles that can be lifted into their vertical place this the use of the fingernails (DGS) . The glass can hold any king of liquid hot or cold (l_glass) . The cool this with this mug is that the thermal outside is hold into place by snap-close chrome rings that can be detached and this transforms the mug into a tray and flower vase so you can give your friends some snacks during coffee. :D :D spec on the picture. c&c as always welcome. keep up the good work you guys . Good luck with the challenge

Agamemnwn

thanks Moe's, and it has a handle three of them attached to the plactic thermal cover, that way you can hold it using the handles , you can hold the thermal cover and leave the handles down like a cup and even open them and hold the mug in place in your car using the handles in the upright position.

Open your image in photoshop, then set the Image size to 800x600. Click File>Save for web, then click on "adjust to file size" and set 100 ks to be the limit. This way you don´t have to resize or test nothing, and you will get very decent qualitys with low weight.

3d-virus: Great thread, just better look on bone head, on your mug makes me laught eternaly (my colegies too).

Shamohan: Like your mug, especialy that one with coustics, but I think it will be naiser if you don't turn them all black and white. Try enstead to add a blue floor, and I think the better results you will get.

YUHA: wery weird, but I like It. I think of your mug like have been stuck in some place away for long time ago, but have a soul inside of, a soul of man who's punish is just to look the whole eternity into one spot. Huh I hope the devil is not listning to this.

Well... the image tags are disabled for a good reason. It's mainly due to the fact that people have a tendancy to change servers for a multitude of reasons and it would lead to tons of dead links. I'm sure we've all been to a thread in a forum where we're looking up information and when it comes time to see an image... it's not there. This is both frustrating and annoying... so we avoid this by uploading the images here. No dead links!

As for the 100kb limit... well that's been in effect for as long as I can remember. It's useful too, since not all of out members have a broadband connection. :)

Clamps; you are not allowed to modify the mesh once you have uploaded it to the forums. The render yes... but not the model. Thats breaking THE rule
Please remove that from being an entry or post it in it's earlier format.(Link To Related Post (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=379476&postcount=357))

no no you got me wrong there i didnt change the render at all nor the model just explained the whole scene was modeling in the time limit. you said some thing about the design of the holder and i mean the holder / stand is based off a design of real one i have in the kitchen at home. and the real mugs are diffrent. the real mugs look like my entry after that one one with the red, yellow , green banner on the mugs that says coffee latte on it.l

Oh Ok... Sorry I mis-read your post then.
I thought you reffered to changing the model. you CAN rerender the entry.. though I would not advise you make a habbit of it. But you really can't touch the mesh once it is posted.

As for the desighn... well nothing to really crit on it... Not the place to do so :).
I like the way it realy gets things out of the way... but it is not like toilet papers on a strand pole; you wash the cup you used and put it back on top disabling the use of the ones at the bottom at all time... That was my point.
No worries, thank you for sparing the time to explain none the less.
