Trust me... I completely understand that... but I was disqualified for a challenge for double posting an entry, and I only posted a close up of a small detail. It wasn't even the whole model! I just wanted to avoid the same thing happening to you.

Tribute to New Orleans

I was fortunate to visit New Orleans and the surrounding area just a couple of months ago. I had wandered into a little art shop and saw a rack of replicated old product labels. All Louisiana or New Orleans products. I really like the old style of graphic art, so I decided to buy a dozen of them. As I was straightening my home office this morning, I ran across them in my "things to do" pile. Struck me that the little art shop and all the wonderful original and replicated pieces are no more.
So I sat down this morning, modeled the mug that had my morning coffee in it, and decided to use some of those old labels and wrap them on my mugs.

The result is here. Not very fancy, but was'nt suppose to be. My own little tribute to all that was lost.

Quite a simple one, just Lofted splines, a few of which were modified...alot of the time was spent tweeking the handle.

great touch there fasty, I think everyone over here in England (and most of the world for that matter) are suddenly realising just how destructive Katrina was for the Gulf Coast! Still maybe that shop and contents survived by a miracle...you never know!

Fastrak the news is just terrible and my heart goes out to everyone effected by Katrina but Villane is right, you never know.

I have plenty of colleagues around the Louisiana area, I hope they are all OK.

Here's my last entry for the week, I have plenty of proper work to do tomorrow.

Pecenipicek - Now, Post #431 deserves comments:
Very nice design. Original even. The render is top notch.
Unfortunately, the detail on the body of the wireframe is a little hard to see. I was hoping to be able to see how you did the ripples in the body.

Let's see more work.

Welcome to all the new members (how many this week? 3? 4? more?)!

Tisko : you need to include the wireframe as part of the original post. Make it 600 x 800 (a la Fastrak) and add the wirframe in there. Nice mug btw!

Moderators, good luck judgin THIS beast. 53 pages already. . .

Just a thought but you may want to divide the posts up somehow, whether by experience (how many years modeling, for example) or software used (while the MAX users would have more competition, also more feedback and help from each other. . .in theory), and give each a different prize section.

I dunno, it probably won't work (plez don't leap down my throat for suggesting it XP), but this shows signs of becoming unmanageable. I mean, so many entries to be judged, and many weeks not yet even judged from b4. Marty and Fastrak will help alot, but. . .well, I feel sorry for you guys lol. You have your work cut out for ya!

I too am amazed at how quickly this is catching on. Then again, having spent time here it's not hard to see why. I think it's nearly tripled since I started back on week 53.

My guess would be if it keeps growing at this rate they might at some point begin to impose a limit on the number of entries each person can submit. But then again, I can't read the moderators minds.......yet.

Hello all!

I have finally decided to start modelling something and stop just watching.
I have started to learn Blender just few days ago. I have no experience at all, so, basically, this is my first render :) (I mean of a model, because rendering cubes and spheres doesnt count ;) )

I hope it's not so bad for a first render and I hope I have done everything properly.

I have watched these threads (in the speed modelling challenge) for the last months and have been greatly inspired. There are trully awesome modellers here!

This week's thread is no difference - there are some amazing models and renders.

So, here is my simple model... (info on pic) Hope the light is good (it seems ok on this monitor).

***EDIT: :wall: not an entry, because i am stupid and there is no handle attached to my cup :) :wall:

Can't you change it ?
To like 200 KB ??? Plz ?

what soft are you using for jpg compression?? or are you sending the image in other format like bmp? if its bmp, the image never will have less than 600 kb in 800x600 except grayscale

Shamohan: Like your mug, especialy that one with coustics, but I think it will be naiser if you don't turn them all black and white. Try enstead to add a blue floor, and I think the better results you will get.

Marty_McFly - I had intended to, but forgot to mention in my last post ('doh) that you are doing a fantastic job with the judging and it is greatly appreciated. Thanks for the hard work sir.

A few last comments for this week:

3Dvirus - Wow. You've got quite a few mugs in this week. You might need to have a yard sale after this one. You've got some nice entries. Good work!

mboi - If all of your good stuff does indeed happen by accident, then it looks like you've had a few accidents this week. I like the your broken mug. Nice job! :)

H2O - You've got some nice entries this week. I really like the one with the snake head. Nice work!

smallpiece - I like your models and I really like your renders. That granular look in your textures looks very cool.

DT_art - Welcome. You've definitely some fine entries there. You may want to get a clear confirmation from the moderators if your post #691 is for certain considered a mug or not. When I look at it I kind of go back and forth between mug and jug myself. I just wouldn't want to see you get DQ'd for one possibly questionable entry when you have so many other very nice ones. :)

And to the many other great entries I didn't get to. Excellent work people!

Dont worry about us...we're gluttons for punishment (well, Marty is, being a mad scientist and all). Actually, this is one of, if not The, largest thread the challenges has seen. Plus, it's always nice to hear suggestions, but things will probably not change anytime soon.

Stormhater: Radulan is correct. Make as many entries as you like. Viewing your last, I would encourage you to do so. Looks nice, but not really fitting the subject.

Some cool models this week and some very inventive EpoPisces - Nice :smug:

And an old tin mug when camping. Ah cant do it without one.

My entry for the week is a bit lame i know but i wanted to get at least one in and this sprang to mind.

Messed up a bit with the rendering, wanted a clay model but it looked strange, the bump mapping for the cadbury letters didnt work. Changed the lighting from advanced light too 3 omnis and it came out pretty good i think though, albeit a mistake.

One question though. How do you use a picture with a transparent background in max? The transparent bit keeps appearing white.

Ah yeah the details.

Software : 3D Max 6
Modelling : 20mins (Most was the handle done in nurbs cos i cant get the hang of smoothing :shy: )
lighting / materials : an hour or so having a play
Rendering : 45secs

Thanks for letting me know, I PMed Black-3DT to find out.

Bentura: Ty, ty. Yours is well done, except that on a CRT monitor the bump map is a bit hard to read (would looks fine on the school's LCD flatscreens tho).

To all the new ppl: Ditto Marty's post. Sometimes madmen (beg pardon; Mad scientists  ) can say it best ;P .

H2O: love the design. Is there such a mug or was it pure brain juice on your part? Either way, nicely done (a pink version would be just the thing for my sister and mother :smug:)

Voodrew: 1 hr and 21 min Render! Huh, I must be doin something wrong  (looks very very nice, love the lighting).

g3org3: Nice first entry, much better than my first lol. The plastic especially looks dead on.

3DSpirit: Quick question; is it plastic or another material? At first glance it appears plastic, but if you look close, cracks like porcelain are evident. Just wondering.

I just realized what is missing in so many of these high-detail renders; the shadows! Makes things kinda look like they are floating. Just something to think on, I didn't have many critiques for the pics I saw, so I figure mebbe a group critique (it goes for me too, I have no shadow. . .a la Peter pan ;P )

EDIT: wow 2 posts while I was writing this.
RideStowe: Hilarious! <sees Marty walking his way> I mean uh. . .uh. . .terrible, inconsiderate of moderator and all that. Shame, shame. <giggles conspiratorially with RideStowe after Marty passes by>

Raymix;
If you would just change your rendered material to porcelien or pewter or something simiallar it would prevent you from loosing your shot at this week.

I know that it is a modeling competition and not a texturing one. But in the state it is in even though your wir suggests a perfectly acceptable mug, the material just converts it to a sturdy tankar with a handle.

Good luck

DT_Art;
Thank you for your concern and cooperation.

[QUOTE]

1. What are your rendering times? I searched some of your past models and you don't mention the time. Are they higher, or are you being sarcastic? I know that 80 minutes is excessive, but there are times that I get 5 minute renders, depending on the lights, caustics, GI, etc.
2. I learned the lighting by watching the other posts and Fastrak mentioned 3 point lighting. Blur Studios has a 3DS Max Script that will automatically put the lights in the right places. Then, someone else mentioned HDRI. I use both methods and tweak lighting to get the best effect I can.
3. You're right. You need the shadows. Little things like that make the brain go "oh, that's fake".

Thanks for the encouragement.

Hi again :)

Ok, I did this one yeaterday and nearly didn't post it but decided since I had finished it I would (I am not overly happy with the handle).

This model was going to be finished with time to spare until I started the handle, then it all went horribly wrong! really glad I left the handle to last otherwise it wouldn't have got finished. basically as time got way short had to reload the version I saved just before starting the handle and made a new one (very simple handle as a seperate object).

Anyway this was an armored mug, hope you like it :)

Software: 3DMax 7
Modelling time: 60 minutes

Note: had to seriously scale back jpg quality to make this one fit!

3Dvirus- just thought i'd point out that if you use the 'save for web' option you tend to get better a quality compression for the file size.....saving as a jpeg, then compressing seems to reduce the quality quite dramatically in comparison..

Sorry Voodrew, I was being a little sarcastic. My bad, I'll try not to do that in the future. But I was honestly wondering why many ppl have 1 hr + rendering times, if they were perhaps using some software or something that I don't have. Or maybe using settings with Mental Ray that I am not. My renders, even with Mental Ray, never exceed 5 min, and I wondered a bit. I use the default (Maya 6.5 mental ray plugin) settings, render at 800x600, with 2-3 point lights. What settings do you change? Or is it a hardware issue perhaps (I have a GPU, but didn't think it counted that much for render time)?

Oh, and for other Maya users (I imagine it would work with other programs as well but am not sure) here is a quick trick I found to get nice looking soft lighting without using mental ray. Set up an array of directional lights and also 1-2 point lights, or spotlights if you prefer. (NOTE: the attached pic shows the array of directional lights, one at each vertex of a 8 isoparm squashed Nurbs Sphere and 8 lights at the top vertex, and all pointing towards the center). Rendered in Mental Ray there are strange artifacts, but in the maya software render it looks excellent; see attachment.

I have the lights intensity set a little too high, but you get the idea. You can also tweak the various directional lights to create a global illumination effect; all the lights from one direction are a light blue low intesity to simulate light bouncing off a blue wall for instance.

Hello ppl.

Here is my 6# mug :)
It's a bit strange, but have fun tinking at it and model it, it's lieke a office(desk) mug.
It have drawers that U can keep u'r bags off coffe and sugar, and in the top drawer U have some spot to keep cigaret <<vizible better in the zoom render and in the wire (in the wire is the loong bar a half cilinder with a hole, from the top of the zoom image)>>
To keep the drawers in the mug when drink from it, the drawers have lokers. (vizible in the zoom render, and in the wire)
The hole of the mug is until the drawers so U not flood the drawers.
The mug is made from a light material for eassy lifting.
The plate is a little special, cause U put it in the mug, the mug have the hole to conect with the plate.

It's simple and strange but hope u'll enjoy it.

hammering3D I love your model here. It seems a bit unpractical, but atleast you are being original / inovative :) I love your other renders too. That material + lightning is great!

About that render time. Simple fact is that 3D Studio Max render SLOOOOOOW!! It doesn't supports GPU's, and even with a killer cpu it's still hard to get a nice render fast :( Mental Ray is faster then basic scanline, but still takes a while to get your picture. It might be that maya has a killer render engine, in that case I'm going to export all my models to it to render :P

Nice models to all, though it's ashame only little people do crazzy stuff with mugs, loads of standard mugs :( (kudo to the onces that do make fancy stuff)

On to the next challenge :) Can't wait!

pogmothointus - Verry nice and original ideea, but glass mug are NOT acceptable, so U better render with a non transparent material.
U have about 55 min til the end of competition so hurry UP,
But if U do that , not tuch the modeling and just rendering, and state in the reason of EDITING (change the render), and edit U'r old post replace only the image, DON't double post it.

Sorry Voodrew, I was being a little sarcastic.

Don't worry about it. I am quite sarcastic too, but with so many different cultures on this forum, I had to ask so that there wasn't any misunderstandings (I even have a t-shirt that says "Tact is for people not witty enough to be sarcastic").

As for my render times, I don't use Maya and Mental Ray may be a faster render engine on that program (or may not be). The settings I use, for the most part, are the default, but I turn on GI, Caustics and Final Gather. With a lot of reflective parts this tends to have to do A LOT of thinking. I also render everything at 1536 by 1152 then bring the size down in PhotoShop. All this may account for the long render times. As you may have seen on my last render, my time came down by 2/3rds. I don’t think that I really did anything different, but who knows.

Just to give you a bit more to ponder, I have a room in the WIP section that took 23 hours to render.

Well, I’m off to model more. Later.

Voodrew: where can I get that shirt :haha: ?

For the ppl that are wondering, I'm using a AMD XP 2700+, 1 GB RAM, um. . .don't know if a GPU helps out on rendering (I know it does for display) but I have a 3dlabs 512 MB Wildcat VP Pro for a graphics card. Kinda stinks, cuz for an expensive card it doesn't play the latest games :wall:  :haha: lol. Oh well, more time for work I spose.

If there are other specs u want to know just tell me (I think I got the speed ones, but am not sure).

Btw, Voodrew, I'm rendering right now with the specs you gave me, will let u know what time I get. Out of curiosity, what made you decide on 1536 by 1152? Is it a default in your program or for another reason?

Oops, post is kinda closed. Will repost in new one, moderators feel free to delete this one.

Agamemnwn
08-09-2005, 06:52 AM
maybe thats why your render times are that low. try rendering in with a P III 450 384 mb ram with an ATi rage pro and then ask about render times. not everyone has a hardware rendering card EpoPisces :D

EpoPisces
08-09-2005, 07:01 AM
Does the hardware rendering card really kick in for render times? I know it makes things such as Hardware Render Buffer (and therefore particle effects rendering) really sweet, but does it help with the software and mental ray renders?

Lol Agamemnwn, I blew my savings a year ago on this pc ;P

Dudeman: my GPU acts as my video card, so any time anything is displayed on the screen it is at work. This means it really speed up things like particle display, etc. Also (and this is the best part) any screen grab-type form of rendering (such as Maya's Hardware Render Window---thats under Window>Rendering Editors>Hardware Render Buffer) is uber-fast compared to the standard accelerator's output. As the Hardware Render is the standard for rendering out particles, it is ideal for such applications.

On the other hand, these cards are EXPENSIVE. I bought mine just before I was about to go into school for Computer Animation, over a year and a half ago. I didn't know much about what I needed, or about video cards in general, and asked the guy assembling my pc what was the best. BAD mistake. I don't have the OpenGL programming know-how to use it to its full potential, nor do I often deal with a workload large enough to warrant anything near what it can do.

So I paid far too much for an awesome but overpowered card when a $300 one would more than have satisfied me. On the other hand, it introduced me to dual-monitors

If you really think you could use it (and one of the not-quite-so dazzling ones might actually serve you well) several companies sell them. Try www.3dlabs.com.

heh, no need to explain to me how a GPU works.. ive got a 7800GTX :D
and i already had dual-monitor since my geforce FX5600.
i could even modify the drivers of the FX so ill have a Quadro.. but that decreases the performance in games, wich matters a bit more to me.

anyways, i dont use maya. but if you know any 3dsmax plugin that lets me use my GPU for rendering, that would be great.

Hmm... my second bribe so far... the first being some "schweet BBQ" by a member I will not mention. (RdieStwoe) Now... some Whisky. Too bad I'm not a whisky drinker, I perfer Rum myself... (Mmmm... Black Cherry Rum...) and at that... it's on very rare occasions. I'm noticing that food seems to be the perferred method of bribery here... so how about some home cooked Italian food... or Chinese? Those be my Favs! :D

As for you Apu... as I was brought into the judging game a bit late, I had much catching up to do before I even started. Your patience will be more than appreciated! Thou shalt not tempt thy Moderator's patience!

So this challenge has been forgoten or what????

All judging has been suspended until Hunter (my spider) and Titan (my hamster) agree to take equal turns in judging. Hunter feels that he should judge twice as many challenges because he has twice as many legs as Titan. This as you can imagine is a bit unfair... so I'm working on resolving the problem as I type this. Until then, there's free popcorn and fruit juice in the lounge. Enjoy. :)

Wow, what can I say. The amount of entries this week were insane. This week was worse than last weeks challenge. As you'll notice, this list is a bit long... and believe me when I say that it was a lot longer so don't be too upset if you don't see your name on there now, chances are that if you had a valid entry... you were on it at one time or another. I actually enlisted the help of two other Moderators (who will remain nameless unless they wish to reveal themselves) to help get this done, if not for them I'd still be going through entries now. Congratulations to everyone who participated, and good luck in future challenges!

Lol guys, you're giving me a good laugh today that's for sure. First of all, I must mention that the lists are not in the order you think they're in. So please don't think that if you're name is listed first then you're last, or if your name is listed last then you're first... it just not the case. There is a method to my Madness though... but it's honestly nothing special. Put it this way, if you're in that category... you're equal to everyone else in there. :)
