View Full Version : LOW POLY CHALLENGE #1 - Megaman Villain Challenge

Welcome 3DTotal Community. Me and Nappa decided to start a friendly competition in hopes that we end up getting a lot of participants. I think this could be a great thread and a lot of fun and if all goes planned we should have a bunch of cool looking new Villains that will be on the look out for our old friend Mega Man.

Well if you decided to join this little competition, I’m sure in the process we can learn a lot from each other, by sharing tips on ways to model and texture, let alone rig a character.
Please post all works in progress on this thread: )
Well here are the rulz.
1. You have to model a Mega Man Style Villain.
It has to be a new Bot, no rip offs of any of the original villains.
2. Your Bot has to have his own original name with MAN at the end.
For example: Snot Man, Cool Man, Suck man etc.
If you decided to make a female style Villain Bot, just add women and the end - Example: Hot woman, Nylon Woman, Thong Woman Etc. LOL
3. Your Bot can only have one power, and explain his power.
Example – Fire Man shoots fire, Ice Man shoots Ice.
4. Before you start to model you must post your concept art. Colored is optional,
Name of the Bot is required.
5. All Models have to be within 5,000 tri's or 2500 Polys: )
6. 1 – 1024 X 1024 or smaller texture map.
7. Final render of your new Mega Man Villain , needs to be Modeled,
Textured & rigged in attack pose, any additional stuff like effects
And animation is optional. Any software package can be used.
8. All bots must be completed by October 31, 2005

These are the Villains from Mega Man to Mega Man 8, so if you know of more feel free to list them down.
Well I think that’s it for now.
Winner basically gets to be known as the Coolest Mega Man Villain Bot Builder LOL! Well actually hopefully this thread will take off and maybe we can come up with some sort of an award for the top 3 bots: )

hahaha, i did gett an idea of arranging a friendly contest over here.
cool idea but i am working on my little guy model so maybe if iget the time i will try to participate but if it would be me, i would keep low polycount and low texture map and a definite one , even if i would keep highpoly res i would make a definite.

Hey X thats a great Idea, If people want to make a woman Style villain, feel free to do so. Just the same rules apply: ) Ive editied the rules that state Woman Villians are optional.

Ok I guess I'll start it off, I went ahead and drew up my concept of my Mega Man Villain bot. I hope it gets things started.
His name is Meth Man, and he's up to NO Good!
He seriously causes alot of damage to our society and he needs to be stopped: )

really cool guy! I think you should try tweeking his eyes out a bit more.
Quick question,
Do I have to fallow the same "Bulky" body form (say like the rist that makes up the arm cannon) or can i streamline it?

Thx Hand for the comment, Yea the eyes do look funny, I'm trying to get his eyes to look liek they are all cracked out LOL!
X - I suppose you can create it any way you want, as long as it could pass for a Mega Man style Character. If you google search you can find all sorts of styles that were created. I hope this helps.: )

Its actually more of a "WhereTF am i gona go now?" sort of problem lol.
Usually when I am exspected to produce for a thread and come sort, I usually post a joke pic that has to do something with the topic. I would do that here but the joke would problibly afend some people. even though I have the ability of not being known in real life, i still dont want to be a dick.
Anyway,I was in the middle of fixing my scanner when the question poped into my mind, which is, "Can My villian be part organic?" thing is, I already finished all the refs i need to use, and i dont want to start if i cant.

X -Yea Part organic is cool. I figure Mega Man is part organic: ) So yea , why not have your Villian bot part organic.
Evil 98 - By all means, jump right in. If you dont know how to UV map or rig yet, Im sure people will help guide you in the process. Feel free to ask me and I'll do my best to help you finish your Bot.
I figure the whole purpose of this contest was to really get people involved to help trade secrets and so forth: )
Besides it will be alot of fun: )

Well I got my scanner operational(vary noobish stupid solution, dont ask).
Anywho i only spend 15 minutes making the introductional referance. its shabby, but hey, I didnt have that much time :lame:

Back Story:
"In futile attempts to find a worthy opponent in the vast outskirts of the galaxy, he decided to take on the infamous Mega Man. After years of searching, he had found his rival. A battle of epic proportions ensued and left planet to rubble.
In the debris of it all, Omega was left a torn shell of a creature,
dying under the planet's three suns. A tear rolls down his face
and his eyes began to fade. Then, in that moment, as his eyes
began to close, a shadowed figure emerged.
He woke, to only find himself where he thought he should have perished.
Things were different for Omega; his fragile skin had been fused with
a robotic body. A scrambled message was placed in his ship, with orders
to eliminate Mega Man and the whereabouts of his rival. While on route,
he randomly gets flashes of what happened when he blacked out,
But the only thing on Omega's mind is......
REVENGE!"
Well this should get intresting, the next few days are going to be frantic but i will try to get some modeling done.

~X~ talked me into joining up. I'm hella busy at work with this huge milestone we just had, so I can't garuntee that I'll actually have time to work on this, but I'll give it a decent attempt ^_^;;
progress so far:
Only spent about 15-20min on this. I've got ideas for the head/helmet but I haven't drawn it out yet. Still need to draw a side view too, but whatever. Hopefully I'll have time to work on it some more later today.
Name is still in limbo - I've got two ideas, but both kinda suck, so I'm debating some alternatives.

ok... I had the head drawn up and was about to start the side view when my husband (who has played much more megaman than I have) peaked over my shoulder and said 'that looks like gemini man' and I'm all like - '...whosawhatits?' And he's all like 'from megaman 3, he's all icey and splits in two'
So I'm all like... lame... (especially since the idea for this guy was water attacks)
soooo... yeah. If anyone is gonna complain about his resemblance to an existing character, I'll try to rework it some more....
The idea for the character is that he'd carry a large trident... or maybe have one attached to his right arm, I'm not sure yet, and he'd shoot icy water (or something like that) from the trident, like icy water bullets... or something.
For the name, Tridentman was my original idea, but I'm trying to come up with some alternate names that would sound less lame... not sure. (I was also thinking Neptune Man)

Woah, Cyrenn, this is really a terrific idea! I've always been a big fan of megaman, and the concepts that you guys have put up so far are certainly keeping with the art direction that Capcom has been using for the past decade or so. I already see lots of cool variation in the designs, and I can't wait to see them in 3D.
I've been too busy for much of anything lately, but I REALLY want to fit this one in. I can't make any promises, but hopefully I'll be able to throw a poorly made model your way over the weekend. :lame:
Evil - GI is probably not a great idea for giving WIP shots. Global Illumination makes it quite difficult to see any mistakes in the mesh, you'd get much more useful crits and comments if you just showed us the wireframe. That said, it looks to be progressing very nicely. :smug:

Behold my most nefarious creation Wreck Man!!! I could've sworn their was a character like this in the Megaman universe but I looked all over the web and couldn't find one!!! I failed to deliver a colored project I din't have time tofinish this fool out (it's distracting me from my homework!!!). But f I get a chance i'll color him. Or i'll just work out the colors later when I construct him.

AHA!! I figured out who I was thinking of...It was Knight Man from Mega Man 6 He had a mace on his arm and a shield!! Damn I thought I was original but apparently not...Oh well, maybe i'll just redraw him.

Well it basically started out like this: ) My little newphew asked me what were the cool games that I used to play when I was his age. I told him we had cool games like Metroid, Zelda, and I mentioned Mega Man, so then I took him to the video store and we saw the annaversary addition video game the one with all the mega man games on it.
My little nephew played the first Mega Man, So then we went to the Gmae Stop and I bought him the game, he's been hooked ever since. He loves Mega man now: ) I was watching him one day creating his own little Mega man bots and thought how fun I remember how I used to draw them when I was a kid.
So then I figured what the hell I think it would be fun to make a contest out of it,I wanted to see what other people could come up with.

this is the series that started me drawing... It almost brings a tear to my eye. I remember sitting down at age 5 (when megaman 3 came out) with the manual and copying the pictures of the bots for fun and practice. (then i'd doodle during class, making up new bots :D)
I think my dad still has my picture of megaman with his charge shot in his office at work.
anyway, i have a concept, but am lacking a scanner here at college so i cant show you all. just know this, the name of my villian is:
CON MAN!!!

I wasn't so sure about your concept, Athey, but I think the model looks absolutely terrific so far! I really like how you've done the shinguard piece. Did you build a leg and then armor it, or just jump straight into the metal stuff?
Really nice concept, Cyrenn, but he's looking pretty offbalance in the side orthographic. I wouldn't recommend modelling him in that position, as it looks like he's about to fall over. :eek:

I completed his head.....almost, he still needs his braid which i ammodeling as i post this.

Straight to it all. Started with the foot and worked up.
The mesh is actually water-tight except for the knee guards that come up.

hiya! i'd like to see if anyone would like to join us in our 3d community. so far we have 8 people, including fastrak, marty_mcfly, adamos, hammering3d, 3dvirus, Moe's, dele and myself. the idea behind it is to help each other out with 3d, and to have someone to talk to about it. its really helpful, and i've recruited a few of these who think thi sounds like an interesting challenge. its on yahoo messenger so it is instant.

Alright here we go I'm gonna make a few adjustments to tweak out parts and make it a little neater!! (This is just my progress so far i'm not fully done yet). I'm new to this whole Low-Poly thing so pick it apart please i'm still learning and any constructive criticism would be helpful.

Not quite sure about the arms were they connect to the shoulders. I rigged the arms earlier, so far he can move them , but I might run into complications : ( So hopefully I can figure out a way to better that shoulder.

nappa, cells head looks much different. take a look at the eyes, not human. the nose... there is none. the skull bone shape is not as vertical. besides. i think every type of head has been made, so you gotta expect some similarities.

It's reminicent of Cell's 2nd form (Cell didn't have human facial features - the nose and mouth specifically - until his 3rd form) In his 2nd form, his face was similar to this one. But it's still only a very vague similarity. It's more like if Cell's 2nd form and evil kid buu got merged into one. hehe..
Anyways, ~X~ - if you want help with placing the edges, it'd be nice to have a wireframe view ^_^;; Otherwise, it's hard to really help in that department.

Nappa-As for cell I actually wasnt thinking about Cell, infact i drew up 10 diferent heads and this seemed to be the most posible to model lol.

Looking good so far X - As for the model looking like cell, Im sure in some ways it can, but if you think about it everything we draw is inspired by something I suppose. Maybe not intentially but Im sure that image bank in our head collects all kinds of reference that were not quite sure where the inspiration comes from, its just there. : )

But great job X - Omega man is coming along well, keep up the good hussle: )
Updated the Legs and But, ALl whats left is the eyes, I'm thinking about axing the pipe on the back. I sorta like the way hes looking now: )

Yo! bsstz817, it's easy! when you go to post a reply make sure you are in advanced mode and go to manage attachments you can upload the pick straight from your desktop as long as it's under 100 kb's. Or you can link the image through a Photobucket type program the choice is yours!

You know, I just realized that the limit is 5000 QUADS, not 5000, Polys (tris). Freaking 10,000 limit?!?? o_O yeesh!! Insanity... I get a max of 800 verts per character at work, so forcing myself to add enough detail to use 10,000 tris is damned-near impossible.

evil-98 - As for certain pieces being seperate this shouldn't effect the rigging at all. I'm actually going to test rig it here next before I textur it. Just so I can make some adjustments to the mesh. I want to see if the deformations will go right, and I want to see how far I can move his limbs around before they collide: )
I like the idea about the teeth, maybe I'll play around with his grill so that I can expose some choppers : )

Sorry about the confusion done on my part the new Tri limit is 5,000 were not using the word quad or poly anymore to resolved that part
and on a side note hl2 use normals to make there model look that way but i dont think were going to add normals as a part of this competetion
So as from now on Normal Bumps displacement maps ect are all considered effects which are allowed and have no limits

granted i have only done like two other models b4, i think you can pull it off.
in my opinion i think you will need to rotate some looops. and for the arems (if you wanted) you could have a little exstention inbetween the space of the joint and the torso. but i donno how you want that to look so gl with it.
as for the megaman i was thinking of making a brawl seen with a different type of bot that i was gonna model, but if you can get someone to make mega man I think i would want my bot in that animation lol.
Other than that, I will not start modeling my bot til Oct.1 sinc i will be moving to california. so look forward to the new bot :crazy:

I will be residing in the lovely city of ojai.
anyway i was thinking about your bot's leges and i think you should continue modeling them, but his pose can be sort of sloutched over. that way the arms are infront and not interfereing, that and if he attacks or moves to dodge or whatnot im sure his arms wont run into anything.
and if that sugestion is no good you could always make the arms a tad smaller but they throw the bot together. damn im ranting again lol.
you will see my new bot concept oct.3 and WIP starting hopefully oct 10.

Actualy, you have enough left over for it, you have a limit of 5,000 and you alny use 3,000. and personaly i ont see usign more than a thousand polys on a head, i mean you could streach it.

Go to your control panel and hit the Hammer looking Icon: ) Then hit (MORE)
A list should pop up and it should say polygon counter: )

My Max trial is long expired, but I think it was in the "Utilities" panel. Make sure you've got it counting triangles and not faces.
EDIT - Gah! Cyrenn is too quick for me! And he even mentioned the little hammer icon! :eek:
Really nice work, Evil. I like the chestpiece a lot, and the classic Megaman-esque boots are well done too. You seem to have done a good job technologically, so my main critique would be more conceptual. The guy just seems kinda plain right now. It might be a little too early to tell (Seeing as he's still missing a face ;P ), but he just seems like his name might be Generic Man. I think you could definetly push the design a little more.
It's just an opinion, though. It's very possible that I'm jumping the gun or just being dumb, so don't take my post to heart. :smug:

Gyah - I am SO exhausted... No updates at all. Super-busy at work, and this weekend was a bust cuz I hardly even got to use my computer at all the whole time.
I'm glad the poly limit was lowered - lol... 20,000 tris would be insane. Seriously.....
Right now I'm actually optimizing a bunch of models at work for the multi-player stuff - I've gotta get all of these models down to around 700-800 tris. bleh.
Soooo lame.
5k is a good limit. Most megaman Bots are pretty simple in design too, so 5k is more then enough.
I would really like to hope that I'll have time to work on my model more someday soon, but I've got no garuntees. *le sigh*

well vray has a function of rendering the wireframe, its just a shader in vray
you can do it with any other render too, but it doesnt look as good
basicly you apply a gradient ramp and five your model a uvw map (face)

the model itself is around 3800+ tris w/ out the head and i still need to model some stuff, adjust some of the details and optimize some parts. like the hand its around 280-300+ tris so ill probally optimize that or re-model it, some of it is a waste which im working on getting fixed. i need to model the back and some details on the legs, the cape and his head.
i think my model will be over 5000 tris but im sure i can get it down to just the limit

and heres my concept. im gonna need some help with this one, so any assistance would be most appreciated. this is my first ever low poly creation.
name- fission man
power- nuclear fission reactor in his torso supplies heat for his superheated plasma beam. also, he can heat the ground to cause fissures that mega man can fall into.
weakness- hitting him in the fission reactor in his torso is his only weakness.
mega man's acquired ability- fission bomb. can be used twice before recharge.
causes all non-boss creatures on screen to be destroyed. effect on bosses- takes away 1/3 life from all normal bosses, any ice bosses, it takes away 1/2 life.
sorry, i kinda went all out on the character, i figured the more i knew about him, the better it would be.
also, i apologize for the crappy drawing.

I remember Megatron having a Fusion Cannon and that thing kicked ass: )
As for your modeling, Looks like your following your concept pretty close,
I would put some detail around the arms, maybe give him somemore geometry around the elbows so that he can get some good deformation in when it comes time to his rig: )

Nice update, Rashika. Interesting design, I like the torso thus far.
My advice would be to keep rotating the model as you work. It looks like your character is becoming a little flat, so make sure you try to follow the figure from ALL angles. Pulling some points in the side view might help this guy a lot. :smug:

what i wanted to ask you was about the wireframe rendering post you made...now do you need to set-up a specific renderer for that to take effect?...becuase i saw the link you gave about that wireframe rendering tutorial, and i did what they said, but i just want to know if theres anything i might be missing that you may have found out on your own....take care and cant wait to see more updates on you mega villain.

Yea i really love how you render out those wires. I can't seem to get mine to look as nice as your wire render: ) I followed the step on that tutorial but still cant seem to get even wires all around: )

Well here's an update, I was just test rigging METH MAN, to see how well I could pose him. So far so good. I still will probably have to make some changes: )

Woah, you guys are really making progress. All the bots look great, and we've got a good deal of variety between them.
I think I'll finally join in, no more excuses. It seems that I'm out of my league, but I figure I'll get something finished and hope to learn a few tricks in the process. I can't decide on a name for my character, but I've got the general idea in my mind. He fights using air that runs to his hands through piping on his arms. His ability to manipulate the air allows him to compress it and give it form. I'm thinking that he can fling air projectiles and maybe do some slicing and dicing by whipping his hands around and and focusing the air into a blade.
Stupid idea maybe, but my creativity is lacking lately. :hurt:
Anyways, I started the head this afternoon. I tried to draw up some concepts, but I couldn't finish any decent ones and just jumped right into Wings 3D.

Learning how to use Wings has been fun. I like the poly modeling tools a lot, and it's absolutely free. No real renderer though, so don't expect any fancy GI images from me. :smug:
EDIT- Forgot to include the triangle count. I'm sitting at 530 right now, so I think I still have quite a bit of detail to add to the head...

hey guys here's the skinny on "BIO MAN"
He uses the canons on his chest, Knees, and hands to eject a massive Nuclear explosion, which has a chemical make-up of acid that can peel the skin of any who comes in contact. The negative effects of the attack is that it can only be used once due to its tremendous area of attack. Once used Bio Man becomes "very very" vulnerable and can be easily defeated if his target of attack is missed (Mega- Man).
Name of Attack: BIO Canon Explode !!

no cyrenn i am going to give him hands, but the center of his hands is going to have like a barrel look in the palms of his hands....and i think i have to
re-do his knees cause i do think thats over board...but like one of the criteria's are, the character has to have 1 attack and that attack is really 1, it just comes outta four places at once....but dont worry i think i'm scrapping the canons on the knees, but thanks for the input. I have alot more to do in terms of setting the character up for rigging, but i'll post the update very soon :wave:

Zcubed: i love the classic look Z cubed, and i love the update on the helmet...the only thing i see about it is maybe the shoulders, i'm not too sure if you'll get a desired look when it comes down to rigging...unless thats his body suit and he has more armor to him. the chin also looks abit wide...but who am i if your initial sketch was like that well leave everything be :) about the name...well figure out whats going to be his gimmick and run with that, i see no weapons yet or anything i could see that will shout out a name on my end....looking real good though keep it up

i did do a spike type of deal, anything right now going on those knees would be better, and i got no problems chopping up my mesh to make it look better...heres what i did let me know if this is what you were talking about or not:

Thanks for the advice, lowlevel. You mentioned a few of the things I was questioning myself, so it's good to hear them confirmed by someone else. The chin is looking quite broad for the slender, megaman-esque character. The shoulder probably needs to be improved too. I think I spent as much time working on the shoulder as I did the head, but there's STILL work to be done! The shoulder is really my problem area.
As for the character's gimmick, I presented a few ideas when I posted the head image last night. Just scroll up a little. Maybe you can think of a name, mine all sound really cheesy. :lame:
I like your character so far, but I think I see a few things worth fixing in this last image. Those little holes in his shins look WAY too dense. I wouldn't give that thing more than six sides, but it looks like it's got close to fifteen! The feet are still looking too cylindrical too. Try to give them some more form.

zcubed: now that i saw it i did read about what you said your villain was going to do, the fact that he can manipulate air into "pockets of air"....that name popped at me when i saw again what your character will do as an attack, how about
"Pocket Man", thats what i got from your description of what he's going to do....
about my character, i do see what you mean about his feet glad someone told me about those i needed a second opinion there...about hi shin pieces, those originally was gonna be used as weapons also, but like i posted in my last post i am gonna dumb down alot of my mesh to a more sense of believability....now for the reason they look like that is because i did model them right outta the shin, but it didnt go too well, it looked really bowy and not attractive to the eye...the legs to me in mega man was always an eye catcher for me they were for the most part different for alotta the villains...but i will take in what you say and lessen the edges in there abit, thanks for the tip

from what it looks like its controlled by smoothing groups, well atleast from what i see, every edge that doesnt have the same smoothing group seems to render the black lines, you can adjust the thinkness and what not from there.

ok guys i have the cure to the wireframe rendering business!
all you have to do is attach all your objects, select all the edges, create shape, linear
and set the spline to be renderible and adjust the sides and radius and material.
render and enjoy! works pretty cool, just dont try and use the poly count lol

its maybe only a few things i see, one is the wrist, it looks abit too small...second is the waist, it to me looks too boxy, almost too cylindrical like, the hands of course, you already said that your gonna work on them, they look abit too small also... but the next thing is where is his canon or weapon that he'll use....unless your waiting to finish the rest of the mesh before you attack the accesories......as a side note, it really looks low poly, your mesh looks no more than 2000 tris max, just remeber we have 5000tris to work with push the envelope as much as you can, i know you said your working with wings 3D and you yourself say the tools are limited...but as for the model i love the classic look :wave: keep it up

Thanks for the tips, Lowlevel. I think you're right about the hands being too small, especially since I wanted him to be wearing big, bulky gloves. He supposed to have gloves that let him manipulate the air around him, so I am not really going to be sticking any cannons on him. A couple of other people have also mentioned that the waist looks narrow and boxy. I want to keep him quite slim, but I guess I need to scale it up a little bit. As far as the tricount goes, it's in the image. He stands at a little under 2400, so I'm a little under halfway to the target. Now it's all about adding details and fixing meshflow.

Johny, yeah the shoulder still needs some work. I dunno if I'll even be animating him anyways. Wings has no bones system, so I can't rig him. Blender has animation, but the UI is just too freakin difficult to navigate. I've trid a lot of different packages through trials and learning additions, and I've never had as much trouble with one as I have with Blender. It's just such a struggle to do anything in that program. Maybe it's just me, though, so I shouldn't really bash the software (Especially since it's FREE). I could rig him in XSI Mod Tool or Maya PLE, but then he's pretty much locked in that program as they limit your export options. Anyone have any ideas?
The head is looking nice, Evil. Let me see it on the body. :smug:

A friend of mine once said that Mega-man had nearly unlimited powers and abilities but that he was lactose intolerant. . . WELL In watching this contest I couldn't help but want to enter but nothing I could think of seemed to fit. . . Then I remembered that night playing Mega-man (the original) and that conversation, well it was all down hill from there. All my ideas flowed back the milk thing.

Sorry I havent been posting in the last few days, I have been bust with Graduation and interviews and all that fun stuff: ) I'm finally done with school WOOT! WOOT!
As for the Milk Maid names and stuff: ) I would personally like to keep it OG! Like original Ganstas LOL! But the sound of Milk Woman doesnt flow to right: )
But Milk Maid does, But I figured if others decide to use names like Milk Maid I would like them to post an A.K.A after words: )
For example (MILK MAID - A.K.A. - Milk Woman) and so forth.
But again I would like to stress the use of Man & Woman at the end of the names. As for the sexiest thing, its just a contest anyone finding a Man or woman at the end of a Cartoon Robots name must be from the left wing: )

Hey there, Cyrenn, good to hear from you.
I actually much prefer the way that your contest has been conducted to the way that Goat has handled realtime challenges in the past. Rather than drawing up specific concepts for us, you've merely stated a topic and allowed us to take it from there. I like how we're seeing a lot of variety rather than the same model being done by five different people.
Dhin, I think you're pushing it :lame:. It's a nice concept, though I'm not sure how it fits into the megaman universe. BUT, seeing as you've already started working on it I don't think you should be forced to change anything. Looking forward to see how you get your drawing into 3D!

I was taking another look at the wire of your bot.
first of all its ab-fab, i cant wait to finish my smaller bot and do height comparison lol. but what struck me on my second overview of it was the arms, mainly how they are going to deform. I am pretty sure they will come out ok but, just want to throw the heads up to you so you dont ht a snag later on when you are trying to rig it.

yes thats right kids theman_man, he is behind it all and he is by far megamans
most clever foe. his evil powers are his briefcase/machinegun and his abnormally large hand...which he uses to keep the people oppressed, and to beat down on all the little people/robots.

Like he makes sure Mega Man doesnt get his full coverage benifts or even better his unemployment checks when Dr. Lite fires Mega Mans ass for a better up graded model: )

Nice idea on this thread cyrenn i am thinking of modelling Megaman but i will need your guys help on this lol :) i have found a pic of him but there is megaman and megaman x there is alot more ref for the later one so i probably make him then i thinking of doing some of the other good or bad characters this will be my first low poly character mind :D so please help me.

Nice work, Athey! Everything is looking nice and clean. You did a good job on the ****** and shoulders, two areas that have been giving me trouble.
My only crit right now is that the eyes look kinda crooked.

i think i need to fix some stuff, first figure out what i need mesh wise for the model to deform correctly second how to acctually rig the model, third UVW mapping...
as of now, im kinda stuff besides tweaking the model.. lol but its pretty fun

wow i was amazed at first when i was looking at your counts, then i saw it was counting by polys lol... whats the count by tris?

i gues he has boxy shoulders and waist but the man_man is made of advanced metals unknown to megaman. so this makes him kicass.
and his arms and such are made out cylinders so he has equal roundnes.

i see you pumped that out real quick there smokin....looks pretty good, i like the fact that his suitcase can throw what seems to be missile launchers on'em, the only thing i see which you've probly already know would be the shoulder hinge and the legs....your gonna be seeing some stretching around the edges of those areas guaranteed....and also it seems like The man-man might also be limited in his movement where the legs seems too short, but all-in-all he's coming along well keep at it

ey thnx for the words lowlevel...yes ther r some areas that r gona b a problem...but he is only supposed to be posed in an attack position, if i ever wanted to animate him id probly remodel him, but i want to focus on completin this whole project. i cant wait to rig this badboy and start unwrappin him cuz he needs wicked texture work.
aight everybody i wana see some more of ur works, it seems this contest is gona yield some cool bots. keep up the good work......
.....here is a test of my rig so far..using max bones i normally prefer da biped but since i can rig in maya i figure i needs to know max bones...its all stil subject to change, i especially need to work on the areas that have strange deformations.

this is a rigg test to showcase a few deformation in the mesh, i put him in a dunking pose to put him in a kinda extreme pose...as you can see theres deformaty in the right arm, slightly in the mouth and the back of the right leg, and alittle bit in the thumbs....but all-in-all it came out pretty good...if ya got anymore comments please let me know

Wow, nice to see so many entries!
Lowlevel ~ I like your design a lot, cool artistic direction. The chest cannon is a nice way of avoiding the all too common arm-gun. I think you've still got a couple of areas that could use some attention though. The hands shouldn't look as boxy as they do, considering we have 5000 triangles to work with. If you're running tight on polys, pull some out of the shins or the wiring running to his head.
Evil ~ Very nice, still jealous of your chest-piece :lame:.Dunno about the new hair, I think I liked the Zero-esque ponytail more. Also, I don't think you're going to have a fun time getting his knees to bend. They seem like they're locked into his leg armor.
Klan ~ Good start, I like the shape of the helmet.
SmokinPixels ~ Woah! Concept to rigged model in a couple of days! Very fast work, maybe even too fast. I think you need to spend a little more time on him before you call the modeling finished. Lowlevel's crits on the shoulders and legs seem to be dead on. Even if you're not planning to do much animation, the design just doesn't seem practical. Fixing up those areas will aid in deformation and add to the believability of your design.
I am low on free time this weekend, but I'll do my best to finish the modeling so I can get on with unwrapping and all that fun stuff. :xx:

Reworked the gloves completely, added some detail to the shoulders and face, and put those snazzy wings on the boots. Oh yeah, and I think I've named him "Tempest Man". Sitting at 2800 triangles right now, I'm not sure where I'm going to add 2200 more. :crazy:

Yo, z. that is lookin awesome. extra tris left, maybe give him some rocket pack or some kinda propulsion device.just an idea none the less its lookin pro.
and the color scheme i dont kno if its permanent but im digging it.
Thanks for the critiques, yes my bot does need some more work. im thinkin of givin him a makeover with some added megaman type elements (he is lookin rather like ashley woods popbot) my bad.
can someone explain why in lowpoly modeling the tri count is what matters i dont knowa thing about game models except the basics. thnx.

hey thanx for the crit Z cubed i will definitely get to work on the hands...cause yeah i am kinda strapped for poly's :dunno: but i am going to fix the hands abit. and yeah glad you saw i went with a different approach....i didnt want to jump into the whole arm cannon thing, which i could've, but i decided to go different. On your model i love the hands...thats actually the first thing that caught my eye, you say you have 2800 tris now....well what i would do is maybe give your character that old pattented jewel crest on his chest, also pull out some verts on the tip of the boots to give it that mega boot look....heres what i mean:

Ah, I knew the boots were lacking something! You're exactly right, Lowlevel, thanks for the reminder. The hands were quite tough, but I did some sleuthing. I've been trying out all of the major animation packages through their demo versions (Gmax, Maya PLE, etc.) as I figured it would be good to learn an interface so that I'll be ready once I decide to invest in an animation suite. Anyways, one of the primitives in XSI Mod Tool is a basic character. I just worked next to the hand and tried to copy it as best as I could. Then I just changed the proportions to match my character and welded it on. Kinda like using reference images, but in three dimensions. :haha:
SmokinPixels, game engines work in triangles. They break down all faces into the simplest kind, which = :faces:. I'm not sure why it is, probably just for optimization purposes. All you need to know is that realtime models are measured in tris. :lame:

Here is my concept, as I was sketching ideas I forgot the character was suppose to be a bad guy so am gonna make few changes to make him look bit more evil.
I call him 'Wizzo Man'. Sounds a bit cheesy i know :o His powers are made of cosmic energy which are greatly enhanced by his staff, enabling him to fire energy beams, create shields and portals for him to escape.

OK finally i got this damn concept done.. Texas Chainsaw man is pure carnage. He lays waste to all that dare stand in his way. His attack is obviously his beefy saw in which he cuts down his enemies with ease. On his back is a button that when pushed enters him into a state of berserk gorefest.

Dave ~ Nice concept. I don't watch Yugi-Oh, but your character is looking like he'd be right at home in a Megaman game. :smug:
Klan ~ Thanks for the comment. I really like the direction that you're going in with Slam Man. His arms are looking a little too much like cylinders, though. He won't be able to slam anyone if he can't bend his arms :crazy:. Some parts seem to have uneeded polys, but no need to worry about that until you've hit 5,000 tris.
Nosja ~ Wow! I think your concept is my favorite so far; not just because it's well drawn either. Personally, I would scrap the ****** apron, but go with what you like. :smug:
Evil ~ A tempest is defined as "a violent wind". Seeing as my guy will be using the air to attack, it seemed to fit well enough. There are probably tons of better names out there, but I can't think of any. :lame:

Worked on the face, butt, chest, and boots. I also fixed the proportions, as people were telling me that he looked quite short. I think I'm going to call the modeling finished, unless you guys see something wrong. Hit me with all your crits and comments, as I probably won't be able to change anything once I move on to texturing.

Ok here he is. LOL i used up every tri i was alloted... Kind of suxx though because if he doesnt deform right im gonna have to go in and add more geometry and find places to take it from. i did a test rig on his leg and it worked fine so hopefully all is well. Im about to do some renders here in a sec. Right now im playin around with Brazil.

Zcubed: really came along way with your model Zcubed, i see you went with that chest jewel, or maybe it was already apart of your concept anyway :smug: , the only last things i see is the top part of the boot, not the shin area, but the top of where the foot would be, maybe pull a few verts up to round out that top portion, and secondly would be the mouth, it almost has an ape like feature, if you tried to pull down some edges on the top lip and pull up some from the bottom, aside from those 2 small things your model is nice :D

Ok here are some renders done in brazil with gl and a spotlight. Im having an issue with the hand im finding out. For some reason i cant get it to smooth right. May have to go back and skrew with the geometry again..argh. Other than that Im about ready to unwrap.... which i hate doing.. Unwraping a is the worst part.
Zcubed - thx for the compliment. I cant ditch the apron though.. I feel it makes the character
