View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 64 - Steam Power
Black
15-09-2005, 02:55 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified
6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
this weeks challenge
time limit - 60 minutes
deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 22nd of September 2005
subject - Steam Power
Please show care to take "Steam" literally and as in Water Vapor.
What we ask of you to model out are variaty of steam-powered inventions.
As absurd as you go with the personal inventions. Do show care to have it's mechanic

nice topic and nice starter black, this will be fun, it will probably be quite a challenge, not unlike the last challenge...
Black

Oh no.. we changed that subject.
It might not be a subject to be left to be modeled out in an hour. It was a good idea and we just might save it for a two week competition later some day.
sooo keep our eyes open for a something hard but very fun and funny.
Now concentrate on the less hard but still hard enough challange :)

THIS ILLUSTRATION (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3e/Aeolipile_illustration.JPG) might help give you an idea.
The steam is pumped into the spherical chamber and it's exit forces the sphere to spin.
The first step towards turbo engines... the Aeolipile

hmm Black - hehehe, can't wait that day of the hard but funny subject, I like that :D, but this is great to, because we can get verry creative and inventive, and in the same time evrybody can come wit some decend entry, and yes is not so hard, but will be hard in the competiton because I'm shure manny will come with amazing models and inventions...;P

I'll take inorganic subjects over their organic counterparts ANYDAY.
Tried as I might, the feet I came up with didn't pass even MY quality standards for posting. ( Simple. Model something to your expectations. Put it away and come back and look at it the next day. If first impressions are " Wow, that needs help " trash it and start over :)
A steam powered something though. . . . . I'm guessing the challenge will be coming up WITH the something to begin with.
Wonder how many train engines we're gonna see this week :)
I like to see the open interpretation subjects as there are quite a few folks in here who rank really high in the creativity department.
While doing some quick Google lookups on the subject found this info on the
aeolipile. ( I had no idea that steam tech dated this far back )
The earliest example of jet propulsion can be traced as far back as 150 BC to an Egyptian named Hero. (Actually Hero was Hellenic not Egyptian. Thanks to Steve Mavrakis for pointing this out.) Hero invented a machine that rotated on top of a boiling pot due to the reaction effect of hot air or steam exiting several nozzles arranged radially around a wheel. He called this invention an aeolipile.

Great idea for this week - should be a lot more entries from everyone than last one.
Just to check, are we allowed to model steampunk type machines for the comp? I'm assuming the answers yes, but then till I asked last week, I also assumed we could model android feet.

Warning People;
Since steam is in mention and a teapot is a something that boiles water. I know it is going to be very tempting for Max users to be using the preset Tea-Pot.
Keep from doing this please. It counts as the "usage of a model which is not completely new" and doesn't fit in with Rule #2.
In the earlier weeks we have had this come up often, so I doubt most of you will go for it. But for those that are newer. Do not use preset models other than the standardised primitives.
Artecnl; Unfortunately your entry seems to be such.
Happy Birthday Apu!

Well I got caught up in the gears and supports. Popped on a fly wheel, slapped on a hull. and set her to sail. At least till she ran out of steam. I left the texturing to the imagination this time.
Great to see people jump on this. I guess the feet left people running for the inorganics. ;)

And Happy Birthday to Taurus Anurag to !!!
Artecnl i lik it it is nice.
Renz i like what i see not sure if i understand it right though, is it for grains?
It is a Branca's Stamping Mill, invented In 1629 by an Italian engineer, Giovanni Branca, was probably the first to invent an actual impulse turbine. a stamping mill, by a steam-powered turbine. A jet nozzle directed steam onto a horizontally mounted turbine wheel, which then turned an arrangement of gears that operated this mill. I sort of made it to pound grains or rice :)
Nice design Design I liked your simple render too. good luck

yes Black im think of that issue, and the teapot is modelled on the 60 minutes time, im use the model in a backlayer only for reference, is totally modelled by me :D cheers.
well ill appreciatte you if you give me an aswer Black, about if the entry its ok or not .
thanks :D have a good daySorry but I was too occupied for the last few hours.
I understand; but your not stating anything about this in your posts info and your wire displaying it conciderably higher res to compare makes it a hard case. It's sort of makes it worse if you already knew about the rule.
Please do pay attention to the many contestants that do their very best to make sure that the entry i not mistaken or misunderstood.
It's easier for the both sides then.
I presume you were in a rush to fit in a quick starter entry, not being able to be as precautious as you would like... And we definately preffer to believe you guys...
Lets have it to be one of two options for your choice: Either repost your entry by giving the teapot a lower res wire in order to better fit Rule#3; or just preffer to share this entry, preparing stronger grounds for a new entry.
Both are fine by me. I doubt such a situation shall repeat again, and I am sorry that you had a brick wall on your first post of this week.
Black
Note;
As for future entries do keep from smoothed wires. There remains little use to post one that almost looks like a clay render with high ambiency.

...Black: Really nice starter. I love the twist in the legs and the material is just right...
Thanks Sidaho... They were actually a desperate struggle that turned out 'fitting'ly.
It's an extrude along a curve that I tappeed and added a twist of 180 degree's. What makes them look elegant is that I included a colapsing extrusion alng the middle which added a finer curve.
As I had said; it was a desperate measure from little time being left, I had hoped to make a claw-foot like the ingraved illlustration actually.
:(
And for the material.. I had spent some good time on the UV's but decided to worry about custom textures with water marks and old age for a later on period.
I just used an anistropic material with a little relfective blur added. Didn't want the render expensive DGS material so I could just render and get it over with.
Oh which reminds me...
Those intrested in making their own HDRI's... And don't enjoy the time consuming merging of exposure layered reflection ball photo's.
There is a photo-editing software out that allows you to paint in 32 bits and well as a result be able to create even your own environments or at least be able to convert the RAW file format (If your digital camera is able to support it) into some original HDIR's.

Scroll: nice concept - but why stop at 40 minutes? If it looks good as is, it'd look even better with more detailing.
Adamos: I'm not quite sure what yours is meant to do, but it looks incredibly smooth. And the texturing's great.
I have one completed model at the moment, awaiting texturing (I'm actually going to try this week...), and another one in development - trying to get that one done in under the hour.

Folks... a small tip for you while planning on your entries to come.
Honestly it is very easy to just model out any machine insisting that it works with steam-power.
Infact, in most all cases; it would be very difficult for us to make an arguement against it.
But you have to keep in mind the concept of the week and try to ensure that what you model out is literally carrying the concept title the best it can.
The more it represents the week the greater the chance you have. Don't fall back on your idea's that you had planned on going for. But at the least in presenting it keep this in mind.
Another good idea to watch out for in competition subjects simiallar to this is that if you used refference/inspiration from an existing inventions diagrams; a link to it along with your post would help sell your stuff better.
Even if it is an obvious invention.
As expected great models so far.
And I am sure there shall be more!

artecnl: Your lava texture is really cool :)
Mistik: Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira is a magnificent series (especially the manga). I'm very eager to see what you come up with ^^
mimi01: Nice, but you need to adjust the meshsmooth/turbosmooth a lot :hmm:
adamos: Brilliant render! *thumbs up*
Scroll: You shouldn't have stopped there! Smooth it out and texture it please :>
Here's my steam powered pop-pop boat :)
This one is quite ineffective, because the coil is too far away from the heatsource :/
Oh yeah.. almost forgot:
How it works: The copper pipe has a bit of water inside the coil-end. The candle warms it up and it turns to steam. The steam exits from the tubes ends and pushes the boat a bit forward. At this point a pop-sound can be heard and when it repeats, the popping rate is close to 6 pops / second

Project - Nautilos
-----------------
this is a high tech speed train, made for using stream motion in far distances with as little fuel possible, use mainly for other planets with hard enviroment or air pressure like Mars.
How it works
------------
Using big chinks of ice it melts them with a small nuclear engine to export them to steam so that the train with the help of small stream engines can "slide" in to the big tubes without much abrasion therefore smooth high speed transport train .Also ice can be used for interior cooling.
Software :3ds max 6
Renderer: lightracer
Modeling time:30 min
Textering/lighting:about 25 min
Rendering:5min
Annoying last words
-------------------
Did this in a lunch break at work, though i could be a nice idea of using stream even in the future world we live now(Remember fallout? ^_^).I know its a quick crap work but i just liked the idea of a future stream train anyway nice works all and the texturing is super :)

Or as they are also known:
Previous Proper Planning Prevents P*ss Poor Performance
First, I'm finding it somewhat difficult to even come UP with a subject to model, though I guessed ahead of time this would be the tougher part of the competition this week.
I did finally come up with this Grand Scheme of a model. Something along the lines of a steam powered insect. ( Short called Lots of Robots or LOR was the inspiration )
http://www.lotsofrobots.com/Web3/IndexHomeFS.html
Instead of drawing it out, I simply started modelling. Well, when the timer went off I discovered I got as far as a base model of the engine only ( LOL )
*sigh*
I suppose if I sketch this thing out I *might* be able to pull it off. Then again if I took an hour just on the engine, it would be nothing short of a miracle to model an entire insect on top of it in under an hour.
I am thinking of maybe just modelling a base Steam Engine once I can get a design down. Will see. Here's what happened when you just start modelling without a clear picture of what you want to see in the end :)

This is a Steam powered Tattoo machine, these have never really been made and I know nothing about steam power but here is my info on it. steam is generated from a small boiler (not pictured) and pushed through the red tube into the large red container with a steam release valve on top then pushed into the two seperate cylinders pumping two levers up and down turning the silver cylinder ( similar to train wheels) which is hooked to the oblong red sphere which turns and everytime the oblong side hits the "spring" (thats what the flat black piece is called) then moving the silver piece with the black grommet on top which the needle is attached to. whoo.... pushing the needle back and forth through the tube hundreds of times per minute. I hope that is understandable. anyway my model lacks detail do to lack of time. texture and photoshop took about 1 hr. I would really like comments on this one.
Artecnl: Great scene.
optimus prime: I love it... haha
Keep up the good work everyone.

Rooky;
If I get it correctly your model is meant to clean with vapor... right?
If so, the problem here would be that the vapor's presure is meant to power a sort of mechanism for the competitions entries. The existance of steam in it does not prove enough.

Hey guys, I took a break from judging for a few minutes to see what you guys have been up to. I must say that there's some pretty neat ideas floating around. Being a Mad Scientist myself, I can appreciate the creativity flowing through these pages. (More fodder for my vacuums! ) Now I would just like to put out a few notes:
Design: Your post here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=383968&postcount=24) really needs a much clearer wireframe. I tend to disregard entries if I have to strain to see the wireframe. ;)
Makonde: In your post here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=384406&postcount=84) you seem to have a lot of empty space near the bottom of your image. It's just a suggestion, but try showing your model from a different angle and using up all that empty space. Show your model off dude! :)
Vegan_Bookis: Your post here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=384417&postcount=85) is just a tad on the dark side. Try adding another light off to the left of your scene to brighten it up a bit. It helps if I can see all of your model when judging.
re_furbo: Your post here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=384445&postcount=90) also needs just a bit bigger of a wireframe. Your mesh gets really dense at the exaust/wings? Making them (wireframes) a bit bigger would be helpful come judging time.
Everyone: Thanks for taking the time to read this, I only want to help with my suggestions. I hope that no one takes my words as being harsh or rude. I also don't want you to think that if I singled you out, that I'm "picking" on you. My suggestions are just there to help correct some mistakes being made by some of our newcomers... and some of our veterans. ;P Good luck everyone, and have fun! :D

Well, I saw this week topic and thought "what´s the most stupid thing that would work on steam?" so here it is, a Steam Fan. Nothing like a heat powered machine to produce a cool soft breeze in a hot summer.

Hi again :)
thank you all for feedback ,i could say that iam more happy to get feedback than to be a winner :)
i just returned from a concert and thought of a ufo with stream technology(or it could make a nice elevator working with stream what you say ?)
info : on the center we have a large space that the hot water goes and then the stream goes throught 4 pipes with pressure on to a mechanicm like a jet which lifts the ufo up up up and away !!
unfortunatly no time to complete it with steer controls and so on,so lets just say its kind of a missile or an elevator ok ? :)

Shamohan;
The model has to be a machinary that is powered by Steam.
I agree that vapor has great use here in your steam cooker model. But the only power in concern is it pushing up through for the wistle.
Think more as trains and simiallar steam engines.. if not create your own.

Shamohan;
I am sorry if I seemed to have ignored you before. It was not the case.
You are as important to me as many of the members here. And infact with your respectfulness and politeness I can definately value you above a dear few.
For your model; I have had given it thought and I can not call it a DQ issue because there is a certain dynamic concerned from the pressure of the steam pushing up a piston in order to be able to releave the wistling the steam.
So you may keep it as an entry or a shared image. It is your choice. But I am sadly giong to have to say that it is far from the power and advantage of the steam's power we are searching for.
Hope this helps you get a better idea for what may be best.

hi all, a big thanx to the people who commented on my foot entry :^)
this is my espresso machine, i hope the way it works is clear enough-water goes to steam and through coffee, then becomes water again.
3ds max7-45minutes modelling
then playing around with textures etc for 1 1/2 h

User;
There is a diffrence between the dynamics that 'steam powered machinery' offer to compair.
Unfortunately your entry does not qualify to the concepts requirments on that manner.
As successful as your modeling is... the entry is playing in another league.
Please think in the areas of gaining a mechanical advantage or a sort of momentum.
Otherwise every pot and pan would/should work. Like how a pot of rice is matured to a softness via the waters vapours.
Hope this helps you get a better idea. Thank you for your contribution.

Justo:
I think what you want is to use a "Blend" material. In it you get 2 material slots: One slot can be for the rusty, bumpy material, the other can be your reflective material. Great thing is, you also have a mask slot to mix the two together with whatever type of dirt or grunge map you want. Here's a sample.
Hope it helps. If you need more info on this....well, I'm around. No problem.
RideStowe
19-09-2005, 04:38 AM
personally i find it easier to blend them as one bitmap in ps and then do the spec/bump maps from there, as opposed to trying to work in two different materials having to render it over and over to see the result each time.

Actually, I don't have to renderer over and over to see the result. Each slot can be activated independantly of the other, allowing for precise placement of the mask map, right within the viewport.

my first entry for this week
based of a model steam engine i saw on www.ministeam.com some easy looking and hard looking ones to model on there
any way the model is unfinished as some small bits are missing and more detail could of been added to the fire box / houseing
modeling time 60 mins
software 3d max 7 with vray
render time 5 seconds
render time 2 mins
some one tell me also if the entry is ok as i did a wire frame model combo so it does make the picture look bit worse in places as more compression was needed.
also some very good looking entrys this week so far to many names to mention :O or iam just been lazy to type them all in :(

Alright, only took me an hour to model, but this is my first time ever rendering fog and snow and smoke and stuff, so It took me a couple hours to figure that stuff out ^_^
Hope you guys like it, my own original design for a world-of-tomorrow style steam engine.

This isn't an official entry as I forgot what time exactly I started, but I don't want to have to re-model it.
Anyway, here's my steam-powered dragonfly. The main body piece holds the water, which gets heated by the gas-powered cooker attached to the second body-piece. This powers the piston, which in turn pulls the wings up and down.
*edit*: I attached the wrong image (the one without the wire-frame), but since this isn't an entry anyway, I won't bother updating it.

It all in the way you create you bump or displacement map. When in you 3d program you need to control the depth of the bumps. There is a difference between displacement and bump maps. Displacement affects the geometry of the object, and bump creates an elusion.
To create the map use what ever 2D program that you use to create you color and spectral maps in.
I hope this helps.

First post, first entry. :)
Haven't been using 3DS Max for very long, so I chose to do a very simple model, a miniature steam plant. Used a reference photo which you can see here (http://www.sherline.com/images/04NAMES6b.jpg).
Anybody who inspects my wireframe will quickly realise my piping doesn't work! But I didn't have time to link up the piping that isn't visible in the render, so I hope that's acceptable.
Some great models, I find viewing these galleries and seeing how people interpret the theme a good motivation to model.

Wise choice. Multiple posts of the same entry could lead to a disqualification of all entrys for the week. However, you could post your images into another thread, say a WIP, if you wish to work on or show more of your model.
Hope that answers your question.

Most everyone else has sone one of these. I thought I would try my hand at one.
I have an idea for soemthing that might be impressive, but I'm not sure I could do it in the time alotted. I'll have to do a practice run and that just makes it take up more time.. Time I have to manage in the first place...
I've seen some really excelent models. I've also seen a few models that are of any random object that has had "Steam Whatchamacallit" slapped in the title. Though I understand the effort was there, It doesn't seem to fit. (Sorry peeps, it just felt like it needed to be said.)
Well back to time management.
P.s. for those that wondered why most of these engines just spin a wheel... Belts... they used to run almost everything. It's amazing what you can do with powerful rotation.

Oh well it was 1858 the time that Cyrus West Field and others complete the first transatlantic telegraph cable after several unsuccessful attempts.

Hi
EDIT: This isn't an entry, as Black said in his post further on, this just uses the heat and doesn't exactly make any power.
My first post here, I've really only just got into this stuff and am really enjoying it. I've been doing a few tutorials here and there and this is probably the best thing I have done without a tutorial. I know it's not great, but I tried and to me that's all that matters. Also I think the render would have looked better just as a clay rather than just throwing on some default textures.
Info is on the pic

For some first out tryes in the challenges I was told go "none entry"
My entry is a none entry to any kind of competission. So if you'r calculating any entries, count me out. I'm here just for some comments, so I could improve.
I suck at texturing so I didn't do it, to get the post done before the deadline, wednesday.
This picture has been removed because of some 'clearing' enchants being added. You can see it on next page or the one after it : )

i would like to give you an advice that someone said to me and i thought it was very good .Try to imagine that the model you make exists already then break it into parts and model each one.
now for texturing i suck too :) so try some technologies (example : hdri) and some good renderer like vray (they give one free you know ^^) and well practice alot :)

Ok, finally got this in. The texture time is not listed because it is unknown: Maya crashed three times during texturing (not at all during modeling tho. . .but then, we knew Maya was evil right? ;P) and one of those I lost all the textures so. . .anyway, my apologies for how cluttered the image is, I wanted to show it off as much as possible XP.
Sheesh, don't know how some of you model so fast. . .very nice posts this week, it will be interesting to see what the judges say.
Anyway, this is a steam driven Incline Lift. This is my own design, but they used this idea in several places around the world (but they were elctric, not steam driven like this one).
Also, H2O please note the steam release safety valve on the inset at lower right: I made it just for you :smug: (if you look really really close at it, you will notice the handle is actually just the main gear duplicated lol, because I was out of time.)

What i first do is to see all the reference pictures of the model i make. Then i try to see every part of the modell to see how i am going to modell it. This helps me not to change my mind about it in the modelling process and visualizes the modelling for me before i begin to modell. As for texturing . look att the web, look att tutorials tutorials tutorials . see how a surface interacts with the light and finally read read read :D

hello...
my post here
Same Text Again: There's a helicopter. Steam powered one that is. There's seating for one, the front spot, he controls the rear 'thrusters' (or fans : D) with the two huge levers in front. The levers actually only control the steam output to the thrusters.
The other person needed to operate the copter has free roaming spot, but uses shovel (not shown) to fill up the burning chamber with coal or other similiar item of interest. The coal is held in the small 'sink' in front of the burning chamber. The other person (call him Mister 'Workhorse') also manages some basic weighting of the helicopter. For quick turns, he must shift his weight on the copter.
The burning chamber itself is quite simple. The first layer is the burning chamber itself (same size as the 'outcoming' part in the chamber thing), the second layer is over the burning chamber, this is the boiling chamber. : D
And New Text Here: Hope its better now, I changed the color codings of the wires to make it show up better, I hope thats okay : )
Post Script Here: duh, had to save in worse quality cause the wireframe required better quality and the picture took too much space in old quality, oh well, its okay still : )
