The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified

6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

this weeks challenge

time limit - 60 minutes
deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 5th of Oktober 2005
subject - Extinguisher

Any device that is of use to extinguish a fire physically or chemically. Your entries are expected to be capable of such a task

We strongly request you to not post any entries of your creation urinating on a fire to extinguish it.

Black and Andy

A quick starter done and rendered in MaYA.
The modeling was under and hour. The texture was done by scanning my office extinguisher from diffrent angles. It cost the texturing to take about an hour.
The rendering took around 20 or so minutes total. It was slow due to the crackled texture on the BG.
All put together in Pshop

I think I'll try my hand in this week's modelling as well.

Last week's was a lot of fun, even though I finished up my second model for it a little too late. :/

This week, we'll see how I do, since I've been discovering the wonders of the different lights (as opposed to the Ambient Lights I had been using, and using Mental Ray for realism. *drool*

Thanks, Winter Lord! I'll be brushing through that site for a few hours tonight.

I'm sure no one minds that you're posting alot - isn't that what a forum is for? :D

Short of spam, conversation and sharing good tutorials and tools to learn should generally be considered a good thing. :)

TheWinterLord: Great textures. And nice detail. Though your wires could be more visible.I try to go white on black or black on white. Oh and is your tank wire smoothed?

adamos: Nice entry. You chose a good chrome.

Black: Instead of scanning a real one you might've done a search on the net, It is amazing what some people have scanned or just designed and uploaded.

Well here's mine.

Nice model and materials and great rendering and detail - just love the welding.

I'll try to post one, but don't know how to improve from this!

P.S: I guess you're using the Lathe modifier for the round parts. Seems a better way than box modelling...

Black
29-09-2005, 01:55 PM
Folks;
As stated in the post, chemically or physically capable of extinguishing the fire. So entries such as Radulan's qualify. The fire does not have to be a room burning down.

Radulan;
I had recently purchased a clip-art gallery with clip arts on safety and so on. There were nice sighns of fire-aware that I could have used... and I also happen to have the 9 CD collection of De Espona which also had a readied texture in their model for me to use.
I guess I just wanted to generate the testure of my own.. and at the moment of haste scanning was all that came to mind (My demo period for the 3Dsom is over and we decided to not buy it)

Black

NOTE;
One more thing... I understand that there are a variaty of ready models out there. And an extinguisher is not always the easiest to picture.
I can't stop you from using a base model as long as you model it out and not snap to the ref as it is. But those who use readied models: please credit those that modeled your ref to begin with.

Yedan

my first this week, a traditional CO2, extinguisher, this is also my first attempt at a rendering using just HDRI lighting, any advice on HDRI would be nice. :)

Orkron
29-09-2005, 02:05 PM
I'm confused black,
Are you saying it's okay to use base models now? Is that pretty new cuz it was always a no-no in the past (in my past i mean...wasn't here all summer)
I personally will never use a base model, as that defeats the purpose of learning
new techniques...Just curious about ur post.

Black
29-09-2005, 02:22 PM
Orkron;
It is not... some people do use them.. and hope to not have it noticed. Or preffer to just not mention it.

Since the StarWars Challange there has been situations that there were those stating that they were only using a model as a "Ref".
My sending is there. There is simialarities to existing models all the time. And this similarity is to be more obvious in such a subject. It is best that the ref is stated BEFORE we ask them... Because we shall.

Is it clearer?

thanx everyone nice entries
Radulan my actual beholder is made with the oil tank in extended primitives and yes it is smoothed.

Fastrak-3DT wow nice detail on your fantastic model, thanx for the advice with bumb i guess Extinguisher's are not that bumpy, but I like mine, urs is amazing.

Black-3DT I find it awesome that you could take real pictures of texture on your real Extinguisher, and then to add to that you took pictures from different directuions and made it look really good like u did. superb.

Thanks for all the comments people!

this is actually my first post on this board, although I've been a long time reader .

Finally I found time (and courage :o ) for participating and would appreciate any comments and tips for improvement.

I want to thank all the mods and users of the board for this kind of challenge because it's really amazing what some of you're doing and I could already learn a lot, even though I'm still quite a novice in 3d gfx .

I'll put it this way... (for you and others to better understand)

I did a VERY brief search for thumbs of already existing models in the internet. And with a few of the many below I have put together a sampler.
IF your entry ressembles one of these too much, OR any other available model from the net (You would know if this would be the case)...
It would be a very good idea that you contact one of us and clarify yourself BEFORE we contact you.

Thank you.

I hope this was a bit more understandable.

Hello guys. I will start to give some critics in my comment from now on and not just "hey really great", think we all will gain from that, if you think im stupid tell me and ill save you from my whine :D

orkron: cool white extinguisher. maybe got a little to much reflection but its ok :D
artecnl: nice entry =) Same here, its a little to reflective.
radulan: hehe cool and diffrent :)
fish: I want to play with that! Nice plastic material but the yellow gets to much reflection (since its brighter color) so that one should be a little less.
Agamemnwn: nice entry. Think this competition will have much much reflection :) ohh btw HAPPY BIRTHDAY

And heres my entry. Feel free too give critics here aswell im not perfect in anyway, very far from it infact :) To much diffrent colors own my jpg compression :/

Vhector : the black spots are for sure errors you get when you import from AutoCAD. try applying an edit poly modifier, find overlaping vertices in that area and weld them together. It could also be some double faces.

All in all, my advice is to stay away from this workflow - model in ACAD and import in max, as it always generates a lot of problems.

Cheers

Vhector: thx for your comment.

1. For the red tube I used a raytrace material instead of standard. Then I have a falloff map in reflection, with fresnel as falloff type. In bump I have a noise regular with a very very small value (just to scatter the reflection a bit). In diffuse slot I got a composite map(so I could have my label I did in Photoshop on my tube).

2. The black plastic I used a standard material with black diffuse value (actually a little brighter than fully black). In reflection slot I have a falloff with perpendicular/parallel falloff type. And in the bottom slot (the slot that has white color orginally) I have a raytrace map. The reflection have a value of 40 instead of 100.

3. The two metal material I have I have used mentalray material with a metal(lume) in surface parameter. I have blurred reflection checked and just changed colors and reflectivity.

And ofcourse I use a HDRI to have something to reflect. I used old standard kitchen that everyone has ;)

I hope that helps something. PS look at pictures of fire extinguishers you will see that they arent that super reflective that people tends to do them, and almost all reflection IRL (except for mirrors) are in some way blurred so if you have a option to blur your reflection, use it! =)

Hi there, here is my first entry for this week. I am ill and so i did a very simple one. I think it is a bit too reflective but i didn't wanted to spend much time on it. Maybe i try one of the standard extinguishers if i'm feeling better.

mr_lemon
30-09-2005, 01:50 PM
alidanesh...if you work with max you could use the composite material, tiff and tga support alpha channel...btw...you could also use mask on a mix material where black is the part that you don't want to see and white what shold be showed (so in case of a stick, you have to crate a map wuth the full size of your object and in the parts where the sticker is supposed to be should be filled with white color.hope that helps

I assume the bucket is not part of the entry. If it is not, it should be stated in the post as to what is the entry and what is a prop, ect. Usually, floors and walls don't have to be included in this, but extra objects that are modeled and rendered out in the scene should specifically be noted as such.
Thanks

fastrak-3DT

this is a part of an automatic Extinguishers.
These small things are connected to a pipe with water (under pressure).
It is installed under the roof in offices, stores, etc.

If a fire goes up, the temperature raises up and the red part will melt away.
The water will stream out of the pipe onto the flat metal and the pressure pushes the water into all side directions.

Sorry for my bad english, but I think you got it.

AGMJ Hey thanks for the comments!
What I do for my metal shader will work different than you do cuz I use max 6, but in the reflection slot in the maps area I apply a falloff material to reflection slot so that the edges will reflect more than the front, and in the enviornment slot I use an hdri map which you can download anywhere including my website so it gives it more of a realistic reflection.
BTW, that's a great "second model ever"! I was still doing primitives with almost no morphing for weeks...you're a quick study.

littledragon: cool water effect

I like all other entrys very much. Some of them are so realistic!!!

I wondered when someone would get a round to the simplest extinguisher: the pail of water.

You're right about the reflectivity, but that is the only thing detracting from the realism. Good job.

Nice entrys everybody!

From now on I hate firetrucks :P I had to model this 3times before I could "finish" one in the given time. Actually I dont have enough skill to finish a whole truck in 1h. This entry have all details in the front of the truck (like ligths etc) missing because I could not finish it in time and after 3 times trying I have dreamt nightmares about unfinished firetrucks ;)

MAFIA welcome to the forum! good try...there are a few rules you need to observe when competing, and the one you are blatently missing is that you need ONE image submitted with the unsmoothed wire in the same image (use photoshop or similar to do this) and make sure you don't submit a second one, just delete that post and resubmit with the new image. Good luck!

the ones with lots of small cogs and springs that give it that classique look.. like 19th century..?

cud u guys do it?..

Here's my entry for the week!

Hope you guys enjoy.

I originally completed the model on Friday and though, "Yesss! An original extinguisher! No one else has made an antique one yet!" and then, as I'm readying myself for posting, I see that I've been beat by someone else. Heheh, ;p

Anyways, here's my newb model for the week. The bumps look a bit off for some reason... My test renders as I tested lighting and such looked perfect, but right now, it seems off to me. Oh well. I'm satisfied with it, so it's all good. :)

Hi and welcome Stitch! well about your request, it is not we who choose what each week speed modeling challenges are going to be about. it is always Mr. Black who does that. :)

FireFly: "Posting your firetruck after someone else just did theirs: Priceless", hehe I won the race! :D btw you forgot to state your software in your post.

TheWinterLord: yea give it a try, but I tell you its damn hard. btw do you live in sweden now or are you from sweden and living elsewhere?

Sorrow: welcom to the forum, nice invention =) Better hope your not stressed and have that thing in the garage when its fire and accedently take the gasoline dunk :)

MightyPlatypus: welcome to the challenge, nice rusty material there. A little stronger shadow beneath your model should be nice to enhance the effect that it is standing on the ground :)

alidanesh: nice models. As I have said to a couple before is that it is way to reflective and perfect reflection (little better on the last one). You are using mentalray I can see.

noyb: really nice model as usual, but as many others too reflective :)

Minitutorial:
And heres a minitutorial that someone using MentalRay might find usefull.

intergrate metal(lume) in your metalshaders because it have blurred reflection option. You can get great results with playing with the sample and spread values and reflection amout and colour. You can get nice effect using the metal(lume) in diffrent places. I have made an example picture with explenation here:

1. mentalray material and metal(lume) in surface slot. (even use a photon(base) in photon map if you use GI or caustic or both, this apply for all mentalray material you use if you want it to recieve GI and caustic (or generate it)).

2. standard material and in the diffuse slot a metal(lume).

3. standard material and with a mixmap in diffuse slot. In there the bottom one with metal(lume) and the top one plain color. (You can use whatever, plain color or use a bitmap etc what you want). And in Mix amout map use a falloff.

4. Mentalray material with a mix map in surface slot. (same settings as above).

5. Standard material with metal(lume) in reflection slot.

Floor: all standard material. some changes in the metal(lume) like less spread and color change. Havent changed anything else.
Left: mix in diffuse (as above) but i have a bitmap in top slot.
Middle: bitmap in diffuse, falloff in reflection and bottom slot metal(lume).
Right: with both above.

This is only a few ways to intergrate your metal(lume) in your shaders. There is ALOT more way to do this than those few I have gone trough here (like mixing with composite, blend etc.

OBS! In my sample picture I havent changed ANY settings in the metal(lume) and that doesnt get great result but its just to make it easier to see the difference. If you want less "dots" just higher the samples. Higher spread gives bigger blurr and has to have higher samples to not get super visible dots, if thats not what you want ofc. I hav no lights or GI/FG eather, just a HDRI in environment slot. BTW if you dont want the HDRI to reflect in your floor you can use the HDRI in all the shaders environment slots instead of the background envslot.

Last but not least, if you dont have anything better to do you should read through this greate and detailed set of texturing knowledge workshops by leight: TEXTURING FOR DUMMIES (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=77484)

A lot of mighty fine models being displayed thus far. It really is fun to see the many unique styles and ideas.

Fastrak - It's still great to see your models. Very nice extinguisher!

Granimo - Interesting model and well executed!

Kanno - Both model and render look very nice. Well done!

Old_Nick - Exceptional render! Wow!

Lepercon - Welcome to the forums. Excellent first entry!

3djunior - Very well done! The wear and tear is a nice touch.

I don't think I've seen any "bad" models. It's all good, gooder, and goodest! ;P Great work everybody!

Ok, since I've kind of been slacking with last minute entries the last couple of weeks I decided I would put a little more into this week. I was surprised at how tricky threading can be. I didn't want to just scale in every other loop or anything. I wanted to create a continues loop as it should be. It took me some time of messing around to figure out a way to do that in a timely manner. But persistence paid off I think. I also played around with dof for the first time. After about an hour of banging my head I started to figure out how it worked, lol. :wall: It was a blast figuring out new things though. :D

Good Morning!(according to IST)

I have noticed that all the participant have made new version of Extinguisher.
So I have decided to model an old one.

Timings:
Modeling : 18 min
Texturing: 24 min
Rendering: 15 min 36 sec

modeled and rendered in 3ds max 7. Standard Primitives are used and a skylight.

Gone with the American fire hydrant for this one, being from the UK i ended up doing a bit of research on them to get the idea of how they work.

Some excellent models so far chaps, good luck to all...

Unfortunatly i havnt had time to texture my little scene, although i think i'll get round to it next week some time. (just to finalise it for myself :))

Hi, I see some great entries this week.

I have a question for the mods concerting the judging in the challenges. What are the criteria when judging an entry. What do u look for in an entry each week. I say this because i have been in some challenges and i can see in the judging that some of them could have been affected to the layout of presentation as well as the materials . If this is not so plz accept my apology in advance. :D

i think this should be solved in ur mind till this time.u r enjoyin' here enough long time.
my idea is;
---in speed modelling to model the main material there is only one rule " do not pass the time limit"

---there is not endless time to create and apply materials and renders.we have "24x7-1 " hours for materials and render and compose in photoshop in 800x600 or 600x800 jpeg.

---in judging it is all presentation.not only just modelling and it cannot be; cuz' for example; i modelled a side polygons for glass but did not materialed it so how they can know i made it for glass, for plastic or for metal.material must be done and it is in judging. material explains model so it is necesary.
maybe we have not high res tiff or kinda but material should be on purpose.

---render and environment r positive points in judging,u modelled a thing and atmosphere tells ur modelled object's existence purpose better.

so it is speed modelling but all in judging.i am not the mod or admin and not supposed to explain it,just wanted to make an expression for judgings in my thoughts.

Hello ppl.

Here is my first entry, Is not so good, but heh I play 30 min at that TOP part because I wish to not only intersec the geometry but actualy conect them, like U see in the wire that single part made by boxes and cilinders. So I had only 30 min to do the rest so I rush it a little bit. And I play a litle with the textures but after some trys I let it like that.

U again made some amazing models, some of them verry real, and verry real renders good job ppl.

See U.

Well i can understand the rules of modelling in this challenge and ofcourse i try to make myself better in texturing and lighting as well. there is no question in that. What i am conserned is if texturing and lighting is concidered in a speed modelling challenge. In these case some of us can be good speed modellers but u are in a different situation as texturing and lighting come into play.
I can modelled something in 60 min as best as i can with the details att hand as i walk through in my mind how to modell everything whithin the time limit but to texture and light is a trail and error process especially if i cant use IPR due to my pc being so old and i have to open photoshop make changes and then update psd textures and render EVERY time. and in my pc takes time.

Orkron
03-10-2005, 11:48 PM
Agamemnwn: the answer is, you can win using a clay model if it's better than other models in the mods' opinion. texturing/lighting is considered under two conditions as I see it: if the textures and light actually disrupts the veiw of the model then it hurts the chance of the submission and 2, when there is a really hard decision and a few models are really just all as good, then they look at dynamics such as compostion of light, proper texturing etc...I may be wrong but I do believe I read that from Andy many months ago.

Agamemnwn
04-10-2005, 12:16 AM
Orkron For me winning the challenges comes last .I modell in these challenges to better myself and learn more things. Winning is not the point of my discussion here. I just want to know what are the criteria in judging the challenges and if the texturing and lighting parts sometimes overlaps the modelling part.

I keep promise myself that I'll coment more to the entrys, so finaly I start doing it.

So here is some that stand up in my eye's

fastrak-3DT - Wath to say, like allways the model is perfect and the maerial look so nice and real.
artecnl - u'r is verry nice to, and clean worked, the material are nice but a litle to reflective.
fish - u'r first entry is nice and original
Agamemnwn - u'r first entry is nice, I like alot the top part, the model and the metal to
OmegaN - Frist entry is verry nice, and like alot the materials, specialy that "green" metal is greet
wdl - u'r first entry look nice and real, even it look siple, I think the wire is not so clear, so I can really undestern wath component U hiding in the top part.
Justo - u'r first model is simple but also look real, specialy with that material and DOF render, and u'r materyal is verry
shiny, but i see that Powder extingusher that are verry shiny on goolge image, so are verry nice.
Kanno - U made a nice job on u'r first entry, o the top part.
adamos - u'r second entry look amazing, the material and render si great, the wire si to dens trught, but form the render the model look nice and clean.
Leto - u'r first entry, simple cleen and realsitic, nice job
GRA*FX - u allways make amazing renders, and u'r stile is perfect for this week chalenge, u done great job with heavy metal stuff. and if I remeber well U done a nice fire exingusher in the parfume botle chanleng.
bouldo - u'r first entry, the model look good from u'r render, but can't see the wire proper. And nice material and render.
Rooky - nice one, I mised u'r stile here, glad u post something, To bad u not render the model in u'r unique way, caind of sepia render.
Lewiswale - simple but look nice and unique.
shamohan - nice model, u'r wire is smoot and dense, but I think is much better than may other's
Lepercon - nice one on u'r first atemp
3djunior - u'r ceiling sprinkler look verry nice to.
DeadlyFreeze - nice model, and nice textures
Orkron - u'r second model look very nice, good we have U back.
andoy - like allways great model, and U remeber me that I'm so stupid,I wander where to find a real extinguiser to look at it, and forogt about the one from my car :(
OmegaN - nice and funny second entry, and a breave try.
FireFly - Priceless ;P
sugararsenic - u'r fire sprinkler seem to me verry nice model and nice details, but I can't see to much from render and not form the wire to:(
MightyPlatypus - simple but the texture make it real.
Sidaho -verry nice one, and amazing render
SubCroC - nice and original
alidanesh - with u'r two entry's, u show that ppl can make nice and real entrys with simple but clean models. nice job
ssjjackass - nice first post.
Agamemnwn - nice sprinkler, nice detailes, and render
noyb - nice Duck Extinguisher ;P, look verry simple at the first look, but if U cheek better the model and wire U have manny nice and clean detailes, it's a complex model.
Bruth - nice key chain extingusher.
Délé - nice model, and render
saberflare3d - lol funny catapult,
Taurus Anurag - nice model, but ther is a fire extingusher like that ?, how it work ?,only drop water like a tea pot ?
cptslog - nice hidrant, but verry dens and smal wire
roach105 - nice model, but same like Taurus Anurag, there actualy exist ? how it work ?
hammering3D - ugly model, u emberesing u'rself ;P

People When I go trough the etyre forum I notice something, and I think Marty will agree with me, manny manny entry's have litle, smoot and dens wire's, and myself I really don't undestern to much from them, and my surprize is that are so manny,
I think puting a clear and big wireframe, U not only help u'rself in judging buy showing all u'r nice detailes, that other way can be ignored cause they are not visible, but U help other people to learn from u'r wire's and undestern how to model something in U'r way.
And more than that U save Marty's eye :) myself after staring a while at so manny dense and unclear wire's my eye's hurt me.

SO JOIN US NOW AND CALL 999.BIG.WIRE.09 GREEN LINE AND SAVE MARTY'S EYE ;P

The image was rendered in a Pentium4 3GHZ with 1 GB of RAM.

What renderer are you using for caustics? I used vray which can be very fast depending what GI methods you choose.
I've been testing vray for about 2 months now and I'm amazed by it's power and speed and strongly recommend it.

Btw nice work you have in your site!

Maybe I should make a tutorial for 3D Total! What do you think Black-3DT? ;)
Ok, I know I'm pushing my luck a little bit :D

The recipe is:
2 splines lathed - 1 for the glass and the other for the water
A big plane
Vray renderer
2 vraylights
1 HDRI for ilumination and to spice up the reflections
Glass material - full reflect and refract with fresnel on and an IOR of 1,6
Water material - the same as glass but with an IOR of 1,3
GI settings - primary bounces set to Irradiance Map and secondary bounces to Quasi-Monte Carlo

Put it all in 3ds max and shake well.
Serve to friends and say cheers!
- sorry for that, morning madness...

Hi there, I found this at an chinese page and liked it.
I modeled the head out of a single sphere. It was a bit complicated and i needed more then one try (started from scratch every time) before it looked well.
Now i want to know, is that because i'm new to modelling or was it a wrong start.
Is there a standard approach for modelling such things? I thought of doing the grasp alone or combine the head out of a sphere and a cone. Can somebody state some sentence about the way you approach this kind of problems? That would be kind.

Anyway great models everybody.
Other comments appreciated.

Do try to add the wire in in a manner that it is vivid please. It makes it hard on the judges.

CarlosMelendez;
Welcome to the forums.. but please do reread the rules.. you have to post a wire frame as well with your entry.

Leto;
With Cinema4D I personally can't really see a faster way to modeling it. I think the only advice I would go for would be to have the trigger as a seperate object.
It has you go through too much work to try and ensure that the topology matches such an extrusion this way.

Via MaYA I would model the can and the top as one object. But it would mean some time loss on your part since the extrusion modifier is not as suffisticated.
All in all I would say you have done a good job Leto.

Hello again! I hope this goes under the topic. I have read that special watertowers can be used to put out forrest fires (as a first resourt) and also be used by the firedepartment. So this is my forrest fire extinguisher  hope you like it. (PS, Its OK to put a 600x800 image right? I have a weak memory that mods have said that in some threads. If its not I will change it to 800x600)

I will make some comment to your entrys soon =)

Once again you are pushing the borders aren't you? :)

But it is not too much diffrent than a glass of water when you think of it.(Just making your conatiner a bit harder to model)
I would call it safely IN the topic... Don't worry.

As for the dimensions.. they are correct. You can always go to the first page and check on the rules when you are uncertain.

Good Luck;

Black: thx for the quick answer. Hehe yea I was a little dumb when I read trough the rules before i posted that question but I stopped reading at "800x600" and then searched for opposite but it stood landscape and portrait :D

I'm sorry I did't want to hurt u'r felings
I'm like u'r model but I think is to smoot, if that model actualy exist sorry I made a mistake, but if u model witout references, my opinion is that is to smoot and because I'm not judging these chalenge, even is a modeling competition, the untextured models don't really caugh my eye unleast ther are really good, U'r model without textures is nice but not cautch my eye's so much because of it's smootnes. I'm sorry I don't want to upsed U is just my honest opinion

ok..i was messing about really...i didnt think u would apologise so profusly. no harm done! :) I will txture it and repost and rough it up a bit.

AGMJ: thx glad you liked it =)

noyb: yea time is always a big problem, it should be more than 24h/day :/

saberflare3d: hehe nice idea with the baloons, a funny entry =)

Taurus Anurag: nice model. Try having some shadows in your scene to better please the eye =)

cptslog: nice model and scene, would like too see that textured =)

Yedan: nice idea. But use the 800x600 size so we can see better =)

roach105: nice leaf texture =)

hammering3D: thx for your comments. Nice entry and good wire, maybe your top handle feels a little flat.

Inklosed: nice composition with the hand, gives the picture nice feeling.

Agamemnwn: good model. fun to see that you took time to make scratches on the textures =)

cyber_zero: nice causitcs. But I think you could have made some cool shapes on the glass, you got 55min more to model =)

agony: nice entry. I cant really say if the wire is to dark because I have the sun in my monitor right now and i cant hardly see the wire =) But use the full 800x600 size that is given to you :)

carlosmelendez: welcome to the forum, but you have to take a look at the rules =) no wire, state software etc

Leto: hehe coooool!

Julle: Nice entry. How about a little bigger wire? You have plenty of space there :)

andrei313: nice. The background is cool. Your handle seems a little bit off but who cares you got fire in the background weeha =D

Délé: nice sprinkler. Like you said it can be tricky to do those "spring" kind of shapes.

A tip for max users to make screwthreads (dont know how its in all other progs maybe you can apply this there to): Best way is just to make a spring outside a cylinder if you want them to point out, or just fake it and make round segments on your cylinder and rotate them abit sideways. To get them inwards (and not fake) is a little more tricky (like délés case).
1. Make a cylinder with as many side segments as you like (1 in height).
2. Then make a spring and position its center at the cylinders center.
3. Make the springs segments equall to the cylinder. Also make the diameter 2x the radius of the cylinder (because its diameter instead of radius)
4. Change the wireshape sides to 3.
5. Change the wireshape diameter , spring turns and height so you get the desired shape of your threads.
6. Pick the cylinder and make a boolean with your spring as operand. As operation change to cut. There you can choose eather refine or split, test both and see wich one gives the cleanest mesh.
7. convert to editable poly.
8. Even if you choosed refine or split you probably have to weld some vertex (if you used split you certanly have to because it splits the mesh). Select all vertex and hit weld.
9. Cleanup the verts that is by them selfes (you will probably get a few of those). select the vertexes and hit remove in the modify panel.
10. Now you can extrude and do whatever you want. If you go to polygon subobject mode you will have all polys you want already selected.
11. If you get any wierd results check your mesh so you have no spooky edges or vertex.

If anyone knows a better way to do this please share :D

Quick little thing i did:
model time: 20 minutes
material time: 15 minutes
render: 5 minutes

The image was rendered in a Pentium4 3GHZ with 1 GB of RAM.

What renderer are you using for caustics? I used vray which can be very fast depending what GI methods you choose.
I've been testing vray for about 2 months now and I'm amazed by it's power and speed and strongly recommend it.

Btw nice work you have in your site!

Well I see why your renders are so fast. I am using an ancient AMD 1800+ with 512 266 ram :( I need to upgrade!!!
I use(d) vray for my caustics (on my site) and that render took over an hour - granted I had way more glass in my image so that added to the render time.
thanks for the comments about my images on my site, much appreciated.

Hey all,
Really great entries so far, looking forward to see the winner. Probably won't be able to post an entry mainly due to time. I just started classes again, so all of life is stuck untill I get use to it. The good news is that every single computer here has Maya AND 3ds Max. The only problem being I'm primarly a Lightwave user, so there will be a bit of time before I'm ready to make something here thats post worthy.

Keep up the good work!

Russ

hammering3D: Thanks for those words earlier, You are a fine example of what this forum is about, You take the time to look at other peoples works and then you take the time and effort to write up what you think. You deserve a big pat on the back for your unselfishness.
That is why this thread gets stronger week by week cos everyone is helpful and no one is selfish, and all are willing to help where they can.

OmegaN: I like the concept :)

An idea that maybe nobody thought of: a water bucket that the helicopters use to put out forest fires. (might be interesting)

Some really decent and high quality models this week - good job

Hope i'm not too late, here's my second attempt at the speed modeling challenges, and it's a fire hose (hope that's the correct name for this thing :) )

Modeled in 60 minutes using 3ds Max 7
Textured: 1h30
Rendering a few seconds

Hey, I said I was feeling lazy ;)
Actually if the glass was more complex it would make the caustics so much more interesting...

Thanks for the comment anyway!
