I was reminded of the good old days of Earthworm Jim and decided to make him. It also gave me a chance to model something cartoony and organic. This part of him took me about 2-3 hours. I basically started out with a cylinder, did some subdivision modeling, then sculpted the details out. Hope you guys like it. I should have it finished in a couple more days.

I modeled the head in about an hour. It was pretty easy, just a cylider with edit poly and some extruded faces. I still gotta do the ridges on his head and tweak it a bit to get it just right(i'm kind of a perfectionist). Thanks for the good replies. I'll keep you guys posted.

Very very VERY nice model of him, it's exactly how he was, even though he was a cartoon. EWJ is nearly number one on my all time favorite games list, so I'm going to be upset if you don't do it perfect, but it doesn't look like you'll have a problem with that ;). Keep up the great work man.

Man, your model makes me wish they'd do EWJ in 3D! It'd be sooooooo cool! Keep up the great work! :)

Ah, those days (feeling nostalgic)! The days when graphics weren't so important and the ideea and the story were the main atraction... Thanks for that blast from the past Picassosonofham. Played EWJ 3d but the feeling was gone. Do you plan to animate your character or it will be pose only?

Dont worry those aren't the final textures, i was just mapping him before i got any further. I made the hands, put bones in them, posed them, then refined them with edit poly and sculpt. Then just added a little hdr lighting. Getting close to being done though. Thanks for all the awesome feedback guys and i am glad to remind you of the good old days when cartoons were made with purpose unlike recent embarassments...cough...kim possible..cough.

Here is a wireframe version of this before i applied turbosmooth so that you can see how the model is layed out. It isn't modeled too physically accurate, but he is a cartoon and to answer a question, yes it is scrictly a pose model. But i am considering making an animatable version because i am really enjoying this project and that would give me a chance to brush up on my character animation. To answer another question, yes i am planning on making the other characters, as long as i can find some reference pictures on the internet. Thanks to all for replying, i am having alot of fun with this.

Awesome, looking great I use to love this game I had EJ 1 and 2, I remember when I got E Jim on the Sega Genesis, I loved the game book cause the artwork rocked, I use to draw the characters all the time.

I acutally still have the book that came with the game.

This model seriousily rocks, the head has such a personality.. Without even having textures on it yet. Great work.

Heres another update. I finished the body, just a little more tweaking on the textures. I separated the gloves from the body, and added the straps and backpack. I know the lighting isn't supreme, but i wanted to get an update out here for you guys. The head is almost done; I just have to add ridges, textures, then put it with the body. I just did a skylight with mental ray and used an hdr image i downloaded. I like reminding all of you of good old things from your childhood, so expect to see more stuff like this from me. Thanks again for the replies.

yeahaaaa!!! superb!

what is that white spot on the back view under the blue belt at the left?
is it an artifact from the render?

why dont you put the head on? it looked awesome

Picassosonofham
06-10-2005, 02:11 AM
I actually am going to put the head on. The thing is that i have been working on the head at home and the body at work. The head is almost done though. The white thing below the belt is just an artifact from the render. I turned the samples on final gather down so it would render faster. On the final rendering i am going to go all out though. The lighting was a quicky too. It will look really cool when i am done.

Here it is; the moment you have all been patiently waiting for. I have completed Earthworm Jim! I took me awhile longer than i expected because i got caught up in work, but i have finally finished it and i am quite happy. I rendered it with max scanling lighttracer with hdr lighting. All the textures are standard because i wanted to keep a cartoon feel. I was going to do a mental ray render with blurred reflections and stuff, but it got to be a 15 min render. I hope you all like it. Thanks for being so patient in with this, it has been a really fun project.
