Is a new app will appear?
Autodesk can ask to Alias and Discreet teams to work on a new 3D soft, The Uber 3D soft, while continuing Maya and 3dsMAx.
And this new soft could replace theme little by litlle.
Many people are happy of this new situation!
But we can say now Autodesk have more or less the monopoly of the market.
And with a weak competition, we can expect a lack of improvements, and incrising prices.
I m really worrying.

You do have a piont, but still, look at the possiblities. A hybrid mix of 3ds and maya, it could get interesting in the years and months to come. Hopefully the prices aren't like the gas prices have been... can we say ridiculous. And hopefully it doesn't get too nasty with the mixing of the two... that's if they do mix and what not.

Honestly Im not happy with this decision. The only things in Max that I would like to see with maya is the bevel/chamfer tool. Other than that I pretty much just see Maya going down hill. I dont really wish to Max bash so ill just leave it there. Im not pleased :hmm: :( :hurt:  :grr: :xx: (<~ My emotional stages)

I am so happy that I can't say a word. I was waiting for this movement all my life. I don't think that maya will end. Maya is the industries leading special effects software. So if maya ends so will the realistic effects in movies.
I think that this means that there will be a new revolutionary software that will shake he whole ndustry. May be it would remain 3ds max and the maya tools would be added to it. Or may be there could be a new software with a new interface and new name.
Can any one of you think of a name for5 the new software? It could be 3ds maya, Hyper max or even omething not related to maya or max.

I don't think people need to worry as much as they currently are. Maya isn't going anywhere- it's too big and too expensive for Autodesk to let it die. Likewise, 3d studio max is the Autodesk flagship product in this field, so it would be silly to let it be overrun by Maya. As a business student, my guess will be that there will be a greater difference between the products to reduce overlap and allow users to utilize both programs in tandem to achieve even greater effects than are currently possible (Cash-Money for Autodesk).
We're going to see some truely incredible shifts in the industry, but I don't think they will be more bad than good. =)

In a nut shell you don't spend a couple of hundred million on a product to then trash it.
How many car manufacturers have changed hands over the last few years and still we have them producing new cars.
Personally i think it's a monopolization but if it gives a chance for companies like Maxon etc etc to compete all the better for us end users.
After all, is all any of us want is a software that does what we want and is fairly reasonable priced.... Lets hope it's a step forward rather than backwards for us.

Well one my big concerns is... that Autodesk may not be able to keep the maya quality going. I mean if Autodesk could produce a program like maya, wouldnt they have already? Thats one reason I see Maya losing quality. From what I have seen Max users are excited, while Maya users are disappointed.

I think auto desk have already produced a quality product that matches Maya... but i am not gonna go into them details and that slanging match.

Maya used to be way better thn Max but I have to say it has fallen behind so I hope that it will now be finally upgraded to the quality of max. Maya has not released any real new tool sense 4.5. No ring connect of loop. No chamfer as FireFly stated. OK you can load the MJpoly tools but they are not as good as MAX is. Max is way better for modeling. If they can get Maax to have the animation tools and Maya to get the modeling and rigging tool up to par, I will be happy. I am forced to use both right now.

I have both programs, and I mostly use Max for the vray and IMO: easier material editing. But, I do think, that all my Maya models, are smoother by start, and they were more easier to model. Also, I like Maya's dynamics the best way of creating fire, water, dust ect... but I hate the compicated material editor, and mayby a little more confusing way of texture mapping.
I got no problem in the fusion, but if the things are going to be like, doing Max as it is, and making Maya, more Maxish, I'm conserned about the change. But let's all hope, that they keep em as their selves. :)

You're right. I doubt Autodesk will simply flush the Maya franchise down the toilet since they've paid out so much for it. But, don't forget, there're plenty of companies that are bought out and disolved to be incorporated into the larger company. Back in the 1990s a few smaller computer firms were bought out by HP, stripped down to piles of resources, and augmented into the company (in a much slower and gentler method than I've explained, but that's how it went if you play it in fast forward :lame:). I totally agree with you that it's 99% sure that Maya isn't going in any different direction quickly.

No need to fret! Think of it this way: if you pay nearly $200 million for a company, you'll get more than just the name. Autodesk probably got the whole AliasWavefront company- lock, stock, and barrel. I expect that all the managers, warehouses, research studios, and employees won't change all that much since it's generally bad business to cause traumatic shifts to a profitable business (it can quickly become unprofitable). Any changes to the Max/Maya caused by this merger will be slow and careful- probably taking one or two years to get going. For the next 6 months, though, you can be sure that Maya will still be run by Maya people, and Max will still be run by Max people, it's just that when push-comes-to-shove, it's autodesk that makes the last say.
Hope that clarifies the situation a little. :)

I have used both to. I wish in maya you could hide polies of a surface. I wish you could add multiple ring connects. I wish you could constrain verts to edges or faces when you slide them closer to each other. I wish you could shift extrude edges. I wish you could make lines renderable and instantly have a tube surface. I wish you could cut through more than one damb poly at a time. I wish you could save UVs, the transfer works but that means you have to merge that part into the scene before you can pull the UV's. I wish you could target weld edges and verts. I do like Maya's append polygons though. why oh why in maya does "control A" by default not select everything and "control d" not deselect everything? That is a Windows standard. In Maya you have your vert, poly and surface select but not a boundary. Why not?

The greatest advantage of Maya over Max is in its heavily customizable interface. I hope Autodesk keeps that in mind.

You do have a point in your, would like to see in Maya, list RickStefani, but I just staded my opinion on what I like more. I can easilly say, that if I'd got to use Max before Maya, I would feel the same for Max. But I got most of my basic 3d skills via Maya, and I personally handel it more easilly than Max. I think I'm a fool, or just a noob, but in Max, I don't even use most of the modeling features, that you listed, so Maya feels more natural, to me of course, to modle.
But don't get me, wrong, I love Max coz it's the only tool I have got to make things so real. :)

No, I am not saying you are a fool. This is my opinion and by no way fact, or that I think it is fact. I started with Max and then switched to Maya. I then loved maya until I switch back to MAX. I have sense switched back to MAY per the classes I am taking and I have to say I like max more after carefully studying both. As for animation, I like MAYA better. Max for modeling. Thank you FBX. I just hope they take the best parts of both and combine them a little.
