hey Monte this is really cool ..I like the concept a lot!

Cyrenn-3DT - Hey, "all's fair in Love and"... erm... how's that saying go.. "Love and Low Poly-computer-game-inspired-character modelling"? Yeah, I think that's it.

lowlevel - Thanks dude, glad you like it. Looking at it this morning though, I think he could do with being tidied up a little. Some areas could do with being simplified to come more in line with the whole MegaMan design ethos.

evil-98 - Thanks bro. Well, you have time enough to start a new one, but personally I rather like Big Man. I think it's cool. Maybe you should try to add improvements to him instead.... :)

niki-3DT - Cheers darlin'. The idea is that he can use his tail to dig in to the walls and ceiling and move around quickly. And he can use his mane as a kind of shield. I think it's pretty neat, but I do think he need simplifying a little.

Awesome, glad to see that you're entering the contest! The concept is very different from all the work that I've seen so far, I really like it.

It would be no fun if I just told you how great it is, so here's what I'm thinking :lame:.

He looks quite short and stocky (Only three or four heads tall). Maybe the propotions could use a little tweaking. Also, I'm not sure what's going on with the feet. It almost looks like he has webbed toes.

MonteCristo
07-10-2005, 02:13 AM
Interesting points, dude. :) I think I like the proportions as they are, but the areas I'm about to work on are:

A) The Neck area. I'm thinking a Robocollar would serve here.

B) The Feet. Overly complicated. They'd make a lot more sense to you if thye were textured, but. Not sure I like them as is.

Thanks Z

How did you get that awsome looking shader with the wire: ) also the one with the thicking ink lines, was that done with the toon shade , or was that done in Photoshop?

I really like the way you present your model & wire like that. I think it would be perfect for model spin test on a demo reel. Im thinking for my next demo reel I would like to somehow pull off that wonderful look : ) If you don't mind sharing the secret: )

Yes plz tell us how you got those awesome renders.....

I have no secrets from you guys about this stuff, but I'll tell you only on one condition. That the next Low poly challenge is as follows:

We are to create a Metal Gear Solid Villain.

The best five will be brought together as the members of "Covered Blade", a group of mercenaries who went of the rails and offer their services to anyone, no matter what the consequences might be.

The characters must include opacity mapping on them in at least one area.

The characters must closely (as possible) resemble the style of MGS 2 and 3.

Other than that, the limits are the same as at the moment. Save that the textures will be no more than 4x512x512 maps.

lol ok deal....now share the secret

This is great! I love this model! Wow! what an original idea. I cannot wait for this one to get textured and colored.
YOu also presented it very nice. I like the background you put it onto.

I do have a crit though. The tail does not seem much like a lion's tail. I think that you could do better with that part.
other than that I love him!

PS:
Cyrenn-3DT, you spelled your signature wrong: Persistent: that is the correct spelling....

LOL! Damn , I failed English twice in Highschool : ( Gezzzzz im a dummy LOL!

Thx Ill make sure to change it: )

I don't really care how you rendered the model, but that sounds like an interesting enough idea for the next competition :smug:. I need to learn how to use alpha maps, anyways.

Also, I just noticed that you've given us a face-count rather than a triangle count. Just triangulating or using Max's triangle counter might be a good idea, as I see a decent mix of quads and tris in your mesh.

Looking forward to more updates!

Ok, well Cyrenn hasn't promised me about the challenge so I guess I won't tell you about the shader. Now, is he going to promise? Or am I only going to share this cutting edge ;) info with nosaj462?

     that's a great piece of work MonteCristo-3DT, as ur all the other works!!!....nice,...

Well, there's nothing stopping you dhruvsm, but don't post it until this challenge is over with. Otherwise it'll be chaos! :D

Oh I didn't know I had that much poWER MUAHAHAHAHHAH!

Yea! Of course I think that will be a Great thread for next comp: ) I've always wanted to make a futuristic Metal Gear Solid Ninja: ) Well Mine will be more futuristic then all the other ones that were in the game : )

Ok So agreed: )

Those wonderful wires PLZ LOL!

OMG that's oo awesome! makes me wanna start my own character. but I dunno how much time I have and I also have liek 10 projects going and i dunno if I should start another.

Ok, I'm done. This as much work as I'm doing on this, I have a DVD to write. :ugh:
Basically, I tried to get the shaders to match the Megaman style. As such the texturing was more shader intensive. Pretty pleased with it all in all.

I also improved the feet design to a simpler mechanic more in keeping with the Megaman style. And the neck is the last such refinement.

This was fun, thanks Cyrenn. Metal Gear next.

Oh, yeah that wire method I promised you all:
Here's how it's done:

First, Light the scene. A three point light setup should work. In any event make sure you have a fairly strong key to give good light contrast.

Next we need to add a material what ever colour you like.

Now make an Outline model:

Duplicate your model.

Apply a black material to the duplicate. Set Diffuse, Specular and Ambient to black.

Apply a Push modifier to the duplicate.

Apply a Normal modifier to the Duplicate. Make sure the Flip Normals checkbox is ticked.

Now you can play with the settings of the Push modifier to give you the desired outline thickness.

Now for the Wire part.

Duplicate the Outline model.

Delete the Normal modifer from the stack.

Reduce the Push modifier to about 0.1 (a small value).

Make a material, and in the Shader Basic Materials Paramaters check the Wire Checkbox.

Apply the material to the second duplicate.

When you render, you will see the lines of your model. This works better with a model that is an Editable Poly, not Mesh.

Other than that, it's all about changing material colours. Experiment. You could also apply self illumination to the wire material so that there are no shadows on the wires.

And that's about all there is to it! :D Hope this is helpful, I have a reputation to consider. :o

whoa thats awesome. is that mapped? or just shader.

MonteCristo
12-10-2005, 02:59 AM
Thanks. It's just a shader. :)

12-10-2005, 03:16 AM
Wow, that's looking pretty sweet! Excellent work, Monte!

I'm kinda curious about the shaders though, are we even allowed to use shaders? Could a game engine render that out in realtime? I know it's not going into a game, but it's always important to remember your restrictions.

lowlevel
12-10-2005, 06:51 AM
definitely some nice work and you pumped that out pretty fast too

MonteCristo
12-10-2005, 02:48 PM
Well, here's the thing Z-cubed, I could go ahead and lay some flat colours instead of the shaders, but I'm not going to. I don't have the time or the inclination. As to the shader stuff. I don't know, it depends on the engine I suppose.

In any event, it would also be down to the engine how it renders the Cel-shader style. Again, I can't do anything about that here.

Great Job Monte: ),
You captured the color scheme of the Mega man world : ) 2 thumbs up : ) and the model is off the hook: )

Thanks for the wire shader info you rock dude: )
