hello there everyone... , as im serving as a moderator in the 2D and Speed Painting Challenge forums, i would be handling the Speed Painting Challenge this time during the absence of Michael.... :) .
to make this interesting and for a change, the topic for this challenge is Storm, paint a storm, or lets say a stormy scene, a landscape hit by a storm, this would certainly give us an opportunity to have something painterly, with those wild brushstrokes as well as creative, dramatic, with all sort of colors and movement.
so lets be spontaneous in our approach, as always, with all those, scribbling, shading, paintstrokes, rough or finished, as u like. my personal opinion would be, to have something like a "Sketch in oils" look, the treatement that would perfectly suit the subject.... :).

so lets start folks...:shout:...start posting, it will carry on for 10 days, ending at the 17th of this month.... :).

all the very best to all of you.....

Hi. New here as well, but longtime lurker, admirer. I saw this and since we've had so many storms here lately, I thought I would try it.

I am a novice painter so any tips and crit are welcome.

I'm unsure what qualifies as "speed painting" so I tried to limit myself to 30 minutes.

here it is at 15 minutes, about: http://www.gypsyspacemuffin.com/stormquick.jpg

at 30: http://www.gypsyspacemuffin.com/storm2.jpg

I did cheat and use a radial gradient in photoshop.

Here is my reference, taken in my backyard. Not a storm but it set up my composition: http://www.gypsyspacemuffin.com/ref.jpg

the attached image is the 30 min, click links for full size

Hey guys,

I think you're supposed to attach your paintings to your posts, so we can see them inside the forum. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

i hope you like it, its a solar storm ;)

i made it with alias sketchbook.

waheed nasir

thats cool.. :).
thats the whole idea, 15, 30 mins work is something u can always submit as long as it goes with the current topic. and this is for everyone, established or novice. no prob at all. i see your work and its quite good. just attach your work with your post, so c72 and VictorC, pls attach them so they open up in these same posts of yours. and if u can write a bit about the image, time and medium/software used, that would be great. :)
hi shadowmaker SdR, how about one from your end ? :)
thats an unusual work tomkpunkt, very vibrant indeed. i like it... :)
keep comin in... :lurve:.

thanks guys.

Windy scene, 20 minutes to finalize, used Wacom Graphire 3 tablet, photoshop and 1 filter. I hope you like it.

Ok Guys, I've also been a lurker on the forums for a long time, just ooing and aahhing at what everyone else does... so, since I have a little photoshop skill, at least more than on 3d software, I tried this out.

Technically it's not a storm, more like the promise of one ;)

Total time:

1 hour. About 10 minutes on each stage.
I used no filters, just painted on diferent layers using this brush I made quickly:
http://www.oscarblanco.net/speedchallenge/project01/brush.jpg
Stage 1
http://www.oscarblanco.net/speedchallenge/project01/stage01.jpg
Stage 2
http://www.oscarblanco.net/speedchallenge/project01/stage02.jpg
Stage 3
http://www.oscarblanco.net/speedchallenge/project01/stage03.jpg
Stage 4
http://www.oscarblanco.net/speedchallenge/project01/stage04.jpg
Stage 5
http://www.oscarblanco.net/speedchallenge/project01/stage05.jpg
Final
http://www.oscarblanco.net/speedchallenge/project01/final.jpg

Of course if this where to become a matte painting I would just be on the main background stage, and now I would be entering the fine details and stuff stage.. but it's a speed challenge, so it's the best I could do in an hour.

Hope it's ok. :)

otas32, very very nice, beautiful, and using the one brush gives it a really unique look.

and you're right, it looks pretty calm there, maybe a storm tomorrow though.

woho.. ...cool stuff.. :D. really surprised to see such good, moody and dramatic paintings from you guys. every artwork suits the topic very well. wonderful work, just the way it should be, dramatic and spontaneous. honestly speaking, its quite a difficult task for me to rate them... :). im confused here.
otas32. i really like your stuff and really enjoyed your wip images. i would add some lighter strokes for the ground, its a bit too dark, the lighter sky would throw some light on it. just some lighter strokes here n there, would be okay, its good like this even. just a minor suggestion... :)
thanks for sharing such a wonderful work folks. lets see who else is getting ready to post.

we all are waiting....

Yup, thanx for the comment and suggestion. Actually, the computer I worked the painting on has a little too much brightness on it's monitor calibration, I notice that now that I'm looking at it on my home puter, the forground looks almost completely black!
There is actually more detail in there, and some refracted light from the sky on the rocky surface, not a lot mind you, it was never my intention to take the eye's atention away from the sky (it will be stormy in a couple of hours, I promise c72! -chuckle-).
Not really going to fix it though, that would go against the whole speed painting thing wouldn't it? hehe.

*Thanx a lot c72 !! The one brush was used in several sizes though, with diferent levels of opacity and blending modes (multiply, lighten and so forth).
Most of the layers are pretty straight forward, I only used overlay on one of them, just to and a little saturation to the overall color.

Hope to see more entries soon too! Until my 3D skills get better, this would be the only speed whatever I would participate in >wink<

09-10-2005, 02:14 AM
hello again otas32, i got your point, regarding the forground. and i completely agree with u, on, not reworking on it, well, if u like u can give it a shot. u just have to add a few strokes. but i can only suggest, its all upto u. whatever u have already submitted is really good. i was seeing it again... :). good to have u here.

cheers....

hello there...i finally managed to spare some moments on this. took about 30 to 40 mins to finish. just an impression created in artrage, using tablet, from scratch.... :).
this post/artwork, of mine, is not votable.

Very very cool! I love the foreground folliage. Also the light that seems to fall in the clearing because of the lightning, very nice impresionism, had to step back a bit from the monitor to see well :)

tokai

just an impression created in artrage

didn't knew that such cool and *free* fun program is out there. Really nice tool, sadly it crashes like hell here on MacOSX 10.3.. so its nice, but in the end useless when u lose work all the time.

attached pic made with artrage (only clouds, when it crashed the 2nd time I gave up) and Photoshop, all in all around 20 min. Used my wacom graphire 3.

Also just a quick impression and far away from my usual style, but good enough for some quick relaxing while doing a break from work. :)

regards,
tokai

whodini, i like the contrast and compositon. seems like this new and different style was fun to do for u and ull be doing more of this.

thanks a lot mim i draw a part of the lights and later i work with ps filters to make it more realistics, i basically work with wet media brushes motion blur, gausian blur, gradients, and one or two filters. i like your paint a lot, have a lot of energy is so dinamic, very nice light to :D

10-10-2005, 02:09 AM
Thanks artecnl for quick reply, I see your second work after my post, it also have a so realistic view with over detailed thunder  .
How you draw these amazing thunders?! :???:  With hands or using effects or …?! :???: I think it is impossible painting them with a mouse or even tablets in one hour  and not seems that painted by hand  seem absolutely like a photography  , please explain more your technique about thunders if possible :haha: , so thanks person. :smug: Also thanks for your comments. :haha:
“mim.Armand” :max:

artecnl
10-10-2005, 02:21 AM
hi mim i think the realism of the thunder is thanks to the plugin, how i say before i draw only a part of the light, lets see the main light then i apply a photoshop effect called Alien Skin Xenofex you can find these plugins on internet, and it do the another part of the job.
but in another tests, without the plugin, you can obtain close results with a small brush lets see work with 1px and 3 px and a shaking hand :D then work with fx's like outer glow, add transparency with the eraser, do 2 or 3 layers, use the blur, you can combine the tools to do almost the same as this plugin, :D here is the page if you are interested http://www.eyecandy.com/

As for me, I don't have any submissions right now; still learning. I'll probably think up a scene and look up some tutorials later for a submission.

So that makes it right to miss out on people who might post some good work on the last day or wotever(not me rofl)?

Do you even understand what your talking about, coz i certainly dont! - It appears you have took what i said, read it your in mind, forgot about it and replied to a sentence that was not even there in the first place - get a clue before you start having a go! :xx:

I understand you, wasnt really aimed at you nor was it ment to be disrespectful. All i ment was dont vote before the comp is ended, its a p retty stupid thing to do, even if it is a small comp.

I just said it wrong, Soemtimes i dont think before i type.

Fair enough - but i dont think anyone has made a vote yet - have they? If they have done then is no point!

Just spotted this thread! Hope I'm not too late :)

Think twice before taking an umbrella out while hill walking hehe.

A bit of fun for a Sunday afternoon - couple of minutes sketching with the old pencil, then about 20/30 mins in Photoshop.

Nice Scene - 3DMONKEY - Like the way scene changes as you scroll across the image. - Think the rain effect stands out a bit in the foreground - could possibly be better if that was faded down a bit more. Good work though!

Hi!

+renderbunny: Nice work, I really like the style, lovely character and so funny lol, specially I like the composition of this work, the free space of the right give good feeling to me, seems like a poster.

+3dmonkey: I agree with buffdady81 nice ideaLike the way scene changes as you scroll across the image , really awesome, I just say that I think it’s better if you post a little larger image although I know that there is 100 kb limit but by some optimization, just for seeing better this nice scene otherwise it’s great.
