Hey SteveW
Great model. How did you get the cartoon look? Is it a render effect or hand painted.
Tnx
Ger22
Thanks Ger22!
My lighting and shader material have alot to do with it. I placed a skylight in my scene and an omni light above. I put a projector map on the omni light (using the caustic map from the lights folder).
The shader is a green colour with a diffuse map I made by using Texporter to unwrap the mesh. I then painted the underbelly and spots in Photoshop, and reapplied the map to the model. The shader itself was then changed from Blinn to the Metal setting and I took up the specular level and glossiness to about 90 and 55 respectively.
I rendered it out from Max using light tracer with my rays settings at about 300 or so and my bounces at 2.
To get that nice soft effect I took the render into photoshop made a copy layer of the background, put a high gaussian blur on the new layer and then simply changed it's blending mode to overlay and took the opacity back to about 65%.
Hope that helps you out with your question and thanks again for the nice comments.

Hello Everyone...
Sorry for missing out on the week. my schedual in hand was not allowing me any time for other things. :(
There are some suprisingly good models from some that are above what I would have expected. It is great to see that you guys are improving on your styles. Unfortunately though due to the concept Andy has presented on the first page a few of the entries lack the part of "accurate models which clearly represent a fish species" in them... and shall suffer disqualification in the end of this week.
Please do take care on your concepts. Such hard work would be a pity to have gone to waste.
Good Luck;
Black
Hey Black, does this mean that any cartoon style entries are DQ'd? Cause that would eliminate me and alot of others too!

Here is my second, and final, entry for this weeks challenge.
Trying to wean myself off of Rhino as much as possible, so this entire model
was done within Softimage this time around. No textures on it as I managed to
corrupt my mesh when converting it to it's hi-res format.
The wireframes are both pre and post smoothing.

I don't know how clear I could have made it in the brief
"a whole lot more organic this week, any type of fish; freshwater, saltwater, tropical etc etc.
It's your call but we will be looking for accurate models which clearly represent the fish species you are modelling"
All the cartoon, abstract, mermaids, Dolphins & Whales ( both of which are mammals not fish) etc will be disqualified.
The onus is on entrants to read the brief not just follow from other entries

A little note; A StarFish (Or Sea Stars) is not a fish either...
Don't get where it got it's name.

I really don't understand because it truly isn't "our call" now is it? You say that in one way it's our call and in the same breath say you are looking for accurate models. However, you don't say you are only looking for accurate models.
In the case of my entry, I modelled it from an actual species that does exist. There is no mention of what style we can model in. As far as accuracy goes my fish has all the correct number of fins, colouring etc....and even shape. It's just in a cartoon style.
I did read the brief (as I do with every competiton) at the beginning. I don't want to come across as sounding like an ass, and I'm definitely not mad but the brief is vague and when coupled with the weekly headline of "something fishy" it is no wonder alot of people will be elimated from this weeks' competition. As for things like sea monsters, whales and dolphins I can understand the elimination process there...But I think that this brief wasn't as descriptive as those of weeks past, and has cost myself and quite a few other people alot of time. Perhaps, in the brief it should have said no cartoon fish will be accepted as entries.

you are not sounding like an ass but I would have thought saying we were looking for accuracy would have ruled out cartoon fish.
now, if your fish is accurately modelled and can easily be identified as a "real fish" but rendered in a "cartoon style" that's different, we are after all looking at the modelling process not the texturing and rendering.
when I said "your call" it followed a list of suggestions.
When we write the brief, it is our job to ensure it says what we want, I don't think that we have to list all the things that are unacceptable otherwise we would have things like "this week we would like you to model a fish. Models of houses, HGV vehicles, cars, humans, other buildings, etc etc etc will not be allowed.
If you have any doubt about the brief it's a very good idea to query it before you start work.
I'm sorry if anmyone feels hard done to but we have to enforce the rules as we see them

fair enough...
the only reason I'm bringing it up is because I did my model from a real fish...even states the species on the image...I just did it in a style I enjoy doing.
Hopefully, I haven't screwed my chances out of being an entry but I felt that this week there were alot of other people who did the same thing as myself.
anyhow, enough from me for this subject....Onwards and upwards to another week.
Thanks Andy,

no problems, as long as it's a "real fish" then I'm not changing the rules :)

hi all, i attempted a lion fish, but i couldn't finish it in the allocated amount of time, guess i bit off more than i could chew. I tried this a number of times, so just thought i'd post it cuz of the time i put in, might not look so good, but here it is anyway.
Good job to all who posted this week, there were some really amazing entries, and i was really impressed with all the textures everyone came up with, Good job :).
Mods: my first post was modelled exactly after a gold fish, i just applied a gold material to it, that won't DQ it will it? well thanks, good luck judging this week :).

nice fish cyber_zero, did you use Alphamap on the tranparent areas?
Hi, Some real good modeling & texturing. Good Luck Every one. Here is my entry for this week. Started late.. not much on texturing on fish.. just the color..
Hey guys. Well, I'm kind of bummed :( . With so many excellent models I really wanted to participate but unfortunately I couldn't. My computer has been freaking out since Friday. I can't figure out what's wrong. I disconnected and reconnected it to fit my new desk, and since then it's been really twitchy. The mouse likes to jump around and either right or left click on it's own. Open windows will just freeze up for no reason. And the worst, when I go into my 3d app it's like the button gets stuck on camera rotate. I can't do anything else. I've tried using a different mouse, ran virus scan, ran system utilities checks, disk clean-ups, and unplugged and replugged the thing in a few times. I'm totally out of ideas. I have no clue what it could be. It seems to be slowly getting better I think though. I guess I'll just have to wait and see. Anyway, I'm blown away at the many outstanding entries this week. It was really fun looking through them.
Diabolos - Great models this week! Interesting render style in your first one. I like the way you use colors in your renders.
-R3D- - You've got a couple of nice entries again this week. Your renders look great!
Aioria - I really like your second entry. Good job!
jazzik - Welcome. Nice model, textures and render. I look forward to seeing more from you in future weeks.
andoy - You've got some really outstanding models this week. Your texturing and renderings are superb, and the models are nice and neat. Probably my favorite entries this week. Excellent job!
messiah khan - Nice models! Your texturing and rendering on the first one are great! It looks like you've got some nice textures on the second one too but it's a little hard to see with the render darker like that.
Vhector - Both of your models are nice. I really like the second one. Nice work!
cyber_zero - Nice model. It shows that you spent time on the texturing as it looks outstanding. Great job!
And to the many other outstanding works this week, Great job!

I agree with Dele there Andoy, very nice models. Seems you and C4D get along quite well :)
Don't go off and get TOO good on us though, they'll make you a mod :)

Very nice week all. FAR more submissions than I expected considering the topic. Be curious to see what is cooked up for next week.

NOT AN ENTRY !!!
correct me if you have post ,but where are my fav ppl posting some fish ? [I]hammering3D ??otacon ??artecnl ??justo ??
come on man i cant wait to see your models :)
Man I never think that I will become a favorite of some other person,
I model one fish in one hour and texture it, and it looks nice, but too simple model no details, so I model it again and made details but made it in 2 hours.
All week I said that I model it again in one hour and with those details, and I think that I would have succeeded, but today something happened, and did't have time, so I fail to have a valid entry
But because I'm so happy to hear that I'm one of u'r favorits, I'll post my two models like an NON ENTRY and hope u enjoy it,
So the textured fish was model in 60min , and the untextured fish is model in 2 hour, and the wireframe is from the fish model in 2 hours.
A lot of people did a good job this week, sorry that after my long comment I didn't have the time to say more about other people's works.
Good luck !!!, See U

Délé: Thankyou, I was wondering where you have been all week, hope you get your PC sorted soon.
Nehumanuscrede:Thanks also, I do feel more comfortable with C4D than i ever did with Max, So i have to thank Andy_K for pushing me in that direction.
I don't think i will ever get TOO good for you guys ( and girls) here, but i will keep trying to improve myself, as for them making me a MOD... I don't think i would like you lot on my back week in week out !!... LOL and anyway the mods we have are doing a superb job already.
I really enjoyed this week and some very different entries, which is always good to see. well done all.

nice fish cyber_zero, did you use Alphamap on the tranparent areas?
cyber_zero - Nice model. It shows that you spent time on the texturing as it looks outstanding. Great job!
Thanks for your comments. It really means a lot to me!
The model was based in some photos that I found in google and a scientific illustration. Sometimes an illustration is the best reference to use because there is already some analysis and simplifying in the process.
It wasn't too difficult to model although I had to do it two times. But I was very happy with the final result!
The second challenge was texturing the fish. I tried using my reference photos as I saw in several posts, but wasn't very pleased with the look of it - the photos alreay had reflections and shadows.
So I decided to do my own textures from scratch.
I created different maps for the diffuse (color), opacity (or transparency) and bump - just simple jpegs without alpha channel. This time I used 3dsmax Default Scanline Renders instead of Vray.
After a test render I decided to put a map for reflection. In this case I used the same image that I used for the background since I didn't have any other geometry in my scene.
For me this process is much better because I can control every component in the materials behaviour.
As usual I spend too much time trying to achieve that "perfect" look, or at least some work that I'm not ashamed of and represents the best that I can do with my current knowledge. In other words, work that I can use in a portfolio.
That's why I spend so much time working and so little in the forums.
Sorry for the long, long post but I really love 3d!!!
Btw this forum rocks!

SubCroC whats abstract about it? i mean it is a fish, a prehistoric one i understand, still it qualifies i think.

ya it is abstract,if u read the rules they say " we want u to simulate real world".
and a DQ.
my idea about art is that " art must be creative and original.an art must do more than a camera."
