The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified

6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

This weeks challenge;

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 2nd of November 2005
Subject - Halloween

it's that time of year again, the witching hour approaches - let your imagination run wild

KNEW this subject was coming :)

I even started looking for textures this morning :) My attempts at a jack were less than spectacular, thus no entry from me.

However, I fully expect to see no fewer than one BILLION pumpkins this time around.

This will prove to be an interesting week since the competition isn't limited to an
item, but rather a theme. :)

Good luck all !

Since Nightmare before christmas was mentioned... I thought I'd do something from it. Took longer than I thought it would... well on with the rest of my day. Enjoy

The software was the lovely and free blender 2.37a... Very soon I'l be switching to 2.4.
The rest of the infro is in the picture.

James

Radulan: You need to write what software you used on your picture.
Even though it says so in your sig. [I think]

Great pictures anyway

Playing around again last night in XSI. I've always hated how the booleans work within XSI, so I'm trying to get to where I at least tolerate them.

XSI has a feature like Lightwave ( I'm sure the other apps have it as well ) where you can increase the apparent subdivision of an object on the fly. ( Tab key in LW ) This gives you an idea of how the object is going to look once you actually DO subdivide it. However, when working in the low poly mode and using Booleans, things just go nuts.

In order to get a smooth cut from the boolean operators, the mesh actually needs to be subdivided to it's high poly state before the boolean is applied.

This poses two issues.

1) There are now one bazillion polys that have to be edited making it that much more difficult to manipulate.

2) The forum rules state we would prefer to see the low poly wireframe.
Boolean operators just aren't gonna happen in low poly mode though. At least, not with any accuracy. Thus, a problem.

How stringent ARE the rules when it comes to issues like this ?

I'll continue to play with it to see if the boolean operators can be applied to low poly meshes, but I have my doubts. Anyone has any ideas, I'll be all ears. . . . . :)

A small note about your submission. Your image can not be bigger than 800x600 pixels. You have to resubmit it before it is dq´ed by the moderators. Would be a shame.

Hi there,
so halloween for this week. I definitly wanted to model a pumpkin and so here it is. Had some problems merging the pumpkin and the carving.
Tell me if you like it anyway.

So some comments while rendering:

Andy_k-3DT Isn't there a starter anymore?
adamos Your pumpkin is soooo cool and the cat is even better. Man i love your style.
Dr-BoF very scary (but front perspective is maybe not the best view for it)
stylus nice composing
BlackWolf I love the model. Looks like it just woke up from the dead. Take my pumpkin as a tribute to the black wolf.
OmegaN I have seen much better models from you. Come on you always inspired me!!
qais nice scene, i would try a bit more details on your model next time but i like the mood of the whole.
Radulan: just very nice.
Stanloshka: simple and scary
mjglennon: good old C64 times rise again...
Garner: nice model. I like the stars and in the holder. Whole scene looks like the evil witch is close.
Yedan: Yeahh, i had the same idea but then i first stayed with a pumpkin. Very nice.
wdl: also simple and nice. Well done

Software used: Cinema 4D
Modeling time: 50 min

Maybe i have time for another one this week. I love the topic because its not so strict to one kind of a thing.

I will enjoy competing with everyone if I stand a chance.

Used 3ds Max, did the bag in Reactor, just a chamfer box, couldnt get it looking right, on 2 tries. Had to modify my original theme. Both the candy types are capsules. the "body" is a sof selected cylinder. Multi-sub objected the candies, and used basic colors.

Hope you like it.

adamos: really cool cat, he have some character =) i like the guy too
Leto: sorry for dissapointing you, I just was in a big hurry so I did like many small ugly models instead of one better (to get a scene since i didnt have time for doing one otherwise). Wont happen again i hope! =) btw stylish pumkin

This time I took more time to think about and do the model. Its an halloween mask =) The time runned out so I couldnt finish the mouth so it looks wierd. Its modelled in zbrush so i didnt really know how do make a good wireframe, hope this will do. hope you like it better than my last entry =)

Hey guys, good work so far. I must say I havn't got much enthusiasm for this subject :D but I've given it a go. :)

I was stuck on ideas, but my mum had an idea. She put it down on paper and directed me on the modelling and texture of how it should look. (And damn! she can be bossy) :D

Anyway this is what it come out like, hope you like it:

peous
28-10-2005, 06:21 PM
lodlaiden why don't you model yourself your bag it will look nicer !
macghost there semms to be problems with texture, if you want an approximate texturing result, you could use "spherical mapping" on all you object or "auto maping" (but this one creates discontinuities in the UV)
krave nice one, i see here a problem i often have : on the untextured view on the right, there is a nice shadow under, and in the final render, it is not anymore... probably because of the others lights, but i don't know how to make it visible...
OmegaN looks nice (zbrush is so hard to use for me... i can only make box modeling!)

anyway here is my post (made during lunch time @ work)
the composing is done under Paint Shop Pro 5 so it is ugly, but i can't make photoshop work today at work...
i wanted to do some ghots at beginning, but i realized that the cloth couldn't look good if there was no human shape under, so i modelled one quickly... at the end there is some kind of horror-movie-hero...

Yedan
28-10-2005, 06:38 PM

and for this week's challenge:
i know less about halloween, just in movies.i made a halloween guy that is a bit scary(or funny lookin').

Thanks rod :) took 40 min to model in max, and after playing with zbrush for a few, took just a few min to add detail to it :) Found out that usign a tablet in zbrush is really fast and efficent, its even pressure sensitive!.

Total Thanks bud :) I was lookign for some to, http://www.3dlinks.com/links.cfm?categoryid=13&subcategoryid=122
is what i found. I still have no idea about texturing in zbrush, but hopefully this helps.

Black Cat? ... hmmm seems like this week is going to be my week :)

MacGhost;
Juwt for you to know... paint effects presets are to be treated only as a texturing process to better your model rather than a modeled aspect. And shall be ignored in the judging.
You have not broken any rule. I would just like you to inform you of how they are treated shall you have a mind to use them again.

Peous;
I think the judges will apreciate that your wire frame is more discriptive(Post#77 (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=398448&postcount=77). None the less it is all we have of the guy underneath the cloth you have covered him/her with.
And even though I apreciate your not crowding the view even more by displaying the sheet... unfortunately you are going to have to add a presentation wire of the cloth as well. Due to the rules.

TotalScore;
It is a CLEAR screen-shot of the wire that we ask for. Not a clay render. Please do retouch your post.

SculptorWanted;
We do accept cross-software entries and infact encourage people to try variaties to find a fitting pipeline.
But sometimes this disables us to correctly keep track of the time spent. Or the efforts submitted.

If you wouldn't mind could you please break up your process of getting to your submitted entry(It's moeling AND sculpting process)? With the aproximate time spent for each?
It would aid the most of us greatly.
I agree that your cage mesh is not too complex; but all the vertices are correctly positioned, which is a process that demands some time.

You may have skipped over one of the rules and spent the whole of the hour getting the modeling done with and used a displacement map to obtain the displayed features. If this is the case please change your post as to be a 'Non-Entry'. Because the time spent in the preperation of displacement maps has to be added into the total one hour.

What my dear colleague, Black-3DT, is asking for is a clear wire and not the clay. Plain and simple. Right now you have a color render (which is fine) and a clay view. But as the rules state, you MUST have a clear view of the wireframe in your post. By reading the rules on page 1, rule #3 Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
I'm sure you'll be correcting this promptly.
Thanks

I use 3d max 7 to create the overall mesh (LowPoly).
import as a Obj file into Z-Brush and create the details. I then import it back to 3d max as a Obj file over the lowpoly mesh and create a
(render to texture) normal map. Creating a normal from (render to texture) normal map takes only a few minutes. I say agian I have been creating sculptures for over 25 years.
Soon I will post a tutorial on this.

Black

SculptorWanted;
I am sorry... but with this only; I am far from convinced with such an answer.

Rendering a mesh to texture DOES take from a few seconds to a few minutes... but the creation of the complexer mesh does not.
I am going to have to insist that you better recollect the steps you took in the making of the low-poly mesh that you imported. And also for you to try and recollect how long you have worked on the digital sculpting.

I can (unmodestly) insist that I have sufficient experience especially in organic modeling and anatomically convincing character creation.
By comparing this entry to all the other works you have entered and abilities you have displayed: I am left obligated to ask you to help add some more to my gathered experience on how you were so speedy. It is never too late to learn some more.. hopefully from you in this case.

Else I shall have to sadly with draw your attempt for this weeks challange.
I hope you understand.

Lord_Seth;
Model out your character within the given hour's time...
Then texture and rig him/her/it to your hearts desire and present/pose the mesh as you wish.

But do make it easier on the judges and present an aditional render and wire in the default pose so we can make out what you have done with your time. It can be confusing in posed characters.

i thaNK u for comment,i think u r gettin' funny with me,but i shall answer that,
after installing 3dsmax 7,u'll install 3dsmax service pack 1,then u'll install max 7,5 expansion pack, just add the hair.

do not add autodeskVIZ extension
if u do u'll get program crash.

Lord_Seth;
That should do well...

Just try to always keep in mind that there is going to be many entries and you're mager goal is to ensure that your entry is presented best it can and not interpreted wrongly...

As long as you present a model such we can not really butt into bits and peaces such as how you rendered it or from which angle you have looked at it.
(There is an option of displacing/deforming the mesh via rigs to improve the post-modeling process. That is not permitted. But that would not be the issue in posing a character in how ever you pose it. The default pose will just ensure us to better understand)

UrsiNMC, you have every right to post what you want, I belive in freedom of speech wholeheartedly, but as for taste, you're seriously lacking in your choice of models. Now, as far as the cloth is concerned, looks good but could use a little more folds to really reveal its contours/textures... Good modelling, but IMO the subject matter isn't.

UrsinMC;
Hmm now there might be a situation in hand...
Especially since the forum has too often presented people that are sensative with the German swastika symbol on mugs or helmets....

But by me it is just a correctly presented entry that follows the rules.
You have posted a costume and it is all that matters.
Infact a costume that might symbolise fear in some unfortunate families.

The thing is that I just thought it fair for you to know prehand that shall there be too many reactions (publically or via private messages) it may once again have to be removed.
With all of you being able to look beyond the subjective/political view of this entry... I really hope that there shall not be any reactions this time.

I strongly believe that no one from Nambia would be trying to advertise such activities, wishing to promote them. And that this is a modeled entry and nothing more.

Happy Halloween 3D people!
Here's mine for the week. I think it needs a little explanation for our non-american modellers...
On Halloween, it's a tradition to go Trick or Treating and get candy from your neighbors. But if they don't give you a Treat then they get a Trick. A common trick (especially among rowdy teenagers) is to throw eggs at your house or car.
I hope that explains it a little so you aren't wondering "why did she model an egg???"
Also, I'd like to say that I modelled everything in the hour, but the scatter was done afterwards. The wireframe shows everything I modelled. Lot's of use of the shell modifier. Love that thing.
I hope you like it!

Stylus - Looks like Halloween to me. Nice job!

BlackWolf - Nice work! Your render has a nice style to it.

lakcaj - Welcome to the forums. I like the classic Halloween "silhouette" style there. Good work!

OmegaN - Great entries! I really like the mask.

Justo - Great job sir! Top notch as always.

Fastrak - I'm glad you had some time this week. Looks great. Now if only we could pester Marty, Black, and Andy into doing one too. :) I think this would be a fun topic to see something from all of the mods.

To make the hair I've just modeled a nurbs surface and a dupicated some of its isoparms as curves and assigned a hair stroke to them. Finally, I assigned some ramp materials.

I hope you like this one.

Aogor buddy it looks very nice man, and funny too, but i think the render doest give it what it deserves. the eyes do lok weird, so maybe post one more image in normal material, i mean not cartoonish, because the eyes in the lower right render look very odd.
My opinion and up to you to take it, other wise the model looks great.

Add a UVW map from the modifier panel, then choose your parameters in this case (box) would probably work best.
But if you really want to adjust the maps.
Use Unwrap UVW in the Modifier panel and click the edit botton.
a window will open showing a flat UV of your model. In the top right corner click on the arrow tab and choose your texture.

Software: Max 7, Scan-line render
Modelling: 30 Minutes
Scene: 20 Minutes
Texturing: Roughly an hour with PS, the internet and UVW maps...
Rendering: 10 minutes
Other: Composite in PS7, no other alterations

Justo: nice entry =) I think he looks cute instead of scary :D

Gamma12: nice mask, looks a little like the scream mask =)

Design: thanks!!! i appriciate it =) About your work, there is really something that makes your character look pure evil, just dont know why =) 15 attempts wow, even I would stop before that , nice work!

Aogor: that looks quite evil, nice work. 2nd: cool witch =)

UrsiNMC: hehe KKK , dont know if they are that scary tho.

v@la: you got some cool colors there, nice

Kree: nice skull, he looks happy =)

TheWinterLord: ihh the ugly creature army is attacking :)

Kazha: even with the simply model that looks quite cool =)

TotalScore: just keep going =)

juha: cool pumpkin idea

fastrak-3DT: fun to se some entrys from you a little now and then, nice pumpkins and frankenstein, also fun that you made little scenes also =)

wdl: nice atmospehere, you got that glow right

Lord_seth: nice concept! the classic round thingys =) Looks like a stop-motion character.

Ratpouch: nice material on the yellow part, looks quite realistic.

migelowsky: really nice detail

Radulan: really nice modelling, but I think more of egypt mummie than halloween, but it surley is halloween concept anyway =)

RockstarKate: nice egg!

Délé: thanks! your work looks nice and scary, gj!

krave: nice, but I think its too dark, wholdnt notice the mouth if it didnt show in the wire =)

shamohan: is there a halloween party going on there? =)

the_bully: haha I must say your pumpkin looks really funny. A comic pumpkin =)

Jenova: about the textures, I think you would need some uvw coordinates for the stretching. In your case I just would use standard UVW Map modifier with box and plane projections ... test it out or search in the help of max to get info what it does =)

Leto: thanks, im glad that you liked thisone better =)

migelowsky: hehe looks like a rubber figure =)

Aioria: nice composition, it does fit with those "TV" lines.

artecnl: hehe is it a gay monster? :D (just judging on the pose, nothing against gays) =)

BlackWolf: lloks cool, just a little dark, and I think you should define the composition image a little better, its hard to notice when you just look at the image that the bottom left part is another view =)

Kev: not too scary but the pumpkin looks good =)

OmegaN Wasn't really trying to make it scary, just trying to make a warm atmosphere. I really liked your evil mask by the way.
Adamos Cool pumpkin and your cat is awesome. Love the style. Your third entry is great too.
Stylus Nice model, love the lighting.
qias Nice work, I really like the environment.
Radulan What can I say, beautiful models.
Stanloshka Good model but I think your scene needs a little bit of fill light.
Garner ORiginal idea and well implemented.
macghost That's a scary model!
Jatoba Cool idea, I like the texturing.
Design Wow, that's impressive.
Fastrak Nice modelling, I love the style. The render looks beautiful.
Lord_seth Great render, great atmosphere.
RockstarKate Original idea. I've been wandering though, what are those orange, yellow and white things. I've seen them in a few other scenes and I don't know what they are.
the_bully Awesome. Beautiful render.
Ferron G.P. I'm confused as to what the toilet paper scene is about.

Lighter
01-11-2005, 09:21 AM
Ferron G.P. I'm confused as to what the toilet paper scene is about.

That's an old Halloween tradition 'round these parts. Toilet Paper and Eggs. Really, it's just a prank kids play to be evil little brats.

They take rolls of toilet paper and throw them over trees in the front yard and over the house. As the toilet paper unravels in the air, it creates streams of the paper to lay over everything. Here is an example of an extremely toilet paper'd house. http://www.scottgood.com/jsg/blog.nsf/2/SGOD-6AGKS3/$FILE/ToiletPaperLg.jpg

The eggs are just that. Kids get some eggs and throw them at houses and cars. The act is called egging. Here's an image of a car's bumper that had an egg thrown at it - http://www.danielkukwa.com/egging.jpg

Egging and TP'ing of houses is mean and kids get in trouble for it - but that's what its for. Mischief.

Hope that clears up stuff for anyone else who might not know what it all meant in his image.

RockstarKate Original idea. I've been wandering though, what are those orange, yellow and white things. I've seen them in a few other scenes and I don't know what they are.

They're called "candy corn" and they are a candy that people eat around halloween. I think they are gross, personally. But they are a symbol of Halloween. They are very sugary, and in my opinion sort of waxy. Yuck! I think they are cute looking (and easy to model ;)

@ Leto = she is close.....ooooh so close...now i think about it i should have placed a witches silohette / shadow luming over the wall and cauldron and maybe a witxhed broom stick up against the wall. something to add in maybe just to finish off the scene

@ lord seth = thanks for the somment tried to give it some atmosphere, glad you think it worked

@ Dele = pure luck !!!! i think its cos i used textures rather than materials like i normal would have, i used materials simply from a time constraint in real life.

@ Kev = i was lucky to get the first cauldron i think. but thanks for the praise

just want to say some great entries and idea's coming through this week. totally amazed at the originality of it all.

to Adamos, we need some tutorials of you. i love the pumkin and lback cat,, superbly done.
big thumbs up from me..

also i want to apolagise if it takes me a while to answer any comment and crits for some reason my home pc has gone funny and will no longer let me log onto these forums so i can only check in on the forums when i am at work. if anyone has some experience in internet troubles PM me with your ideas, i think i have tried everything but who knows??? cheers.

Ferron G.P. Oh, their eggs. May I suggest, then, that the scale is a little bit off. Our chickens lay fairly small eggs (compared to what you get in the shop) and they are over half the height of a toilet paper roll.

So here it come nr 3 for this week. I what to model head of this monster made by Dr. Frankenstein, but i run out of time so i manage to make only a mask for helloween party.
Modeling time:60 min
Software: Max 6.0
And now about making tutorial. Well its realy hard couse my metod of modeling things. Ther is no bluprints, ref pics or any thing that coulc show whot will be done. Simple i alweys put a plan on scene and from this figure i create whole model. whit no idea how it will look at the end. Only Frankenstein monster wer don whit ref picture. But in my opinion its a low cuality model not worth making for him a tutorial.
BTW: BIG THX FOR YOU GUYS NOW I KNOW WHY I STILL POSTING HERE. THX

O.K

I was kinda hasty and in a hurry with this one, so I messed up with the materials, so now my thingo looks more like an orange, than a pumpkin lantern.

Modeling - 20 min (Max7, hasty and really easy one with bad, literally, holes)
rendering - 5 mins (Vray)
Texturing - 15 mins
Lighting and set up - 3 mins (bad filters, so took a bit too much to render)

really nice work Renz, looks really realistic ! how do you made the borders of the cookies ? using Maya Paint Effects ?

Another thing, does anyone knows how to setup (in Maya) light fog that goes out from the holes of the pumpkin ? light fog from 3dsMax does it, mut in maya, it doesn't the fog seem to stop where there is no hole...

You're right Orkron. But with ZBrush it isn't really modeling, it's more sculpting. So it shoudn't count as a speed model. But it's a fun programme, only the third try with this programme.

Yes, zbrush can, they just must lower the level of geometry, it's like taking meshsmooth iteractions down:

Z-Brush is without a doubt a modeling program that scares the pants off anyone
who does not use it. It can create any mesh Low or High, export/ import from all
major 3D softwares and used by all the major special visual effects companies.
Speed modeling is what I think it was build for.

really nice work Renz, looks really realistic ! how do you made the borders of the cookies ? using Maya Paint Effects ?

Another thing, does anyone knows how to setup (in Maya) light fog that goes out from the holes of the pumpkin ? light fog from 3dsMax does it, mut in maya, it doesn't the fog seem to stop where there is no hole...

And check-out this site:
http://www.giveneyestosee.com/m/photos/pumpkin-carving02-2.html
it's a really good pumpkin carving artist !

I have put up the way i modeled it in the pictures below.

the_bully, Design, Délé Thank you for the comment. real good works from many. good luck every one.
(Hope am not spamming the forums with this post!)

Hey Batons0 !

Noted you're an XSI user as well. Gonna shoot a question your way if you don't mind. Used a boolean to make the cuts for the pumpkin head, but curious how you did it with the low poly mesh without it distorting.

I personally *hate* booleans within XSI since they seem to fubar the mesh something terrible when I use low poly objects. Works great when I convert to high poly mesh ( nice clean cut ) but low poly stuff just goes nuts on me.

Anything in particular you're doing that I am ( obviously ) missing ?

to Ferron G.P.:

yes, but in the picutres arent same as in Ferron G.P. picture.

Betasoft check up you entry. Maximum size of picture is 800*600.

betasoft

to adamos: i think that important is width, that means 800 px, not heigh. fot example look to renz's tutorial, this isnt 600px to height.

But this is a tutorial not an entry, come on read the rules they are simple

betasoft

ok, so look to some entry which have 800pixels to height.

adamos

:wall: Then read this:
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k.

betasoft

yes i know it, but i'm telling you that there is more entrys which have another extend, that means another than 800*600

adamos

you have truth that 600*800 is some like 800*600, but as you told before, in rules is 800*600 not 600*800. 600 is OK but 800 not.

The rules are simple *assuming* they are in your native language :)

Not to make excuses here, but from the posts there are some outstanding modelers with us whose primary language is something other than English :)

Anyhoo:

Give us a render and a wireframe we can see, model it in an hour or less and tell us what you modelled it with. Stay equal or under 800 x 600 resolution and the 100k filesize limit and you're good to go :)

This was fun and interesting, learned a few things also. Comments are very welcome!! Modeling time 40min, texturing and lighting 2hrs. Max 6

tp Nehumanuscrede:yes, maybe is assuming, but if width of picture is by rules equal or less then 600, it can't be 800 (so, i could persume width to 900 or more)
