View Full Version : Wheely - Cartoon Character
08-11-2005, 06:06 AM
This is my first post at Threedy, but I've been reading religiously every day during the past four months. Although I had a run with 3D design using Acad 2000 some years ago, I am fairly new to it all. Right now I am learning how to use Maya, and this post is about "Wheely", a character I designed for my modelling class at Uni.
This is my third model, and it was done and rendered in Maya 6.5 (Mac). I would appreciate your comments, ideas, and suggestions.
Don't hold back :smug:

HAHA! I like him! He's awesome! The character model is great. My only crit is that the lighting in the render could use a bit of work. I would also change the colour of the background to contrast more with the character. Other than that, great character and great job. :D
PS. Welcome to Threedy!

are you gonna put it into an animation?? would be really funny :)
the black part in the middle is too black.. if you know what i mean, maybe make a nice robotic like texture for it??

Thank you guys... I appreciate your comments... Lightning is my biggest headache right now; I am still experimenting with it. I'll change the background, so the character comes out from it, as you suggested.
Right now, I am working in a 60 sec animation with him for the final semester assignment... I am kipping it simple, and as soon as I finish, I will post it.

Wow, another Mac user!
Love the expression on the face, do you have any renders from other views? I'm curious to see the side view.
Great job, good luck w/ the project!

More images from different angles... I changed the background for a better contrast.

The model look great, I have to ask though, did you use reference of any kind? The character reminds me a bit of Lego, or Playmobile, that's the only reason I ask. Excellent job and keep up the good work.

Thank you guys for the kind words...
I grew up playing with Legos, so it is very possible there is some influence there. But "Wheely" actually was born from a doodle I did during a boring theory class. The white and red colors were actually inspired by many hours of watching Speedracer. :smug:
