here are a couple of renders of something else im working on at the moment, not sure what im going to do with the final model yet, might just have it as a rotating thing on the showreel or perhaps model a desert background and make a short movie with it, have to see what time allows for.
Its at just unter 50,000 triangles for now but the engine still needs a little detail towards the back, then I will start on the cockpit, more shots soon (I hope!).

sweet dude. i think ill be watching this. great work
All the little details look excellent. One thing i did notice (might be the render angle) but the cover on the engine looks like it goes further down in the ref pics than on the model?
Plus the details.
How do you make them all part of the one mesh? boolean? or all separate objects? Ive been trying to do simular details but never get good results, if ya could give any advice it would be great as u clearly have it down.

Woah good job dude! I have the same question as Elf... are all those fantastic details seperate objects, or did you build them out from the main object? Or booleans? Do tell lol...

oops, I should have added a wire screenshot (added below) and also mentioned that im working in maya 7. A little about myself? well I only started using maya in january 2005, before that the only other 3d stuff I've done was messing around with games dev kits and making my own levels, but same problem as always, I never actually finished anything, a bad habbit that I'm trying to break with this project.
I've also added 2 more renders below with the new detail I've added: the 2 bumps at the front-top of the engine cover were also added to the underneath of the cover... one more section of detail added to the engine and some more pipes... also added a few more holes along the side of the cover which I was gonna leave out but what the hell :P
schism: I've mostly modeled stuff for games so that might explain the low poly count, also if I'm doing something inorganic I model it as is and I dont smooth the mesh as you can probably see from the wire screen.
Coywolf: thanks :)
Elf: thanks for compliment, I have orthographic shots of the actual model used in the movie (I have top, side, front and even underneath) so it might be the angle that is making the engine cover look too long.
Almost all the smaller details are seperate objects just placed where i want them, it would have actually been better to extrude them from the main mesh as some of them do not curve with the main cylinder and look a little out of place.
chris89: I should have really made a post to introduce myself etc. Its also my favourite pod racer from the movie, I just love the overall shape and design.
RodFlanders11: see the reply for Elf above :)
Kiss Csaba: one idea that i have is to model more pod racers (but much lower poly) and just make my own shorter version of the pod race.
Avala: I hope I dont disapoint :)
thanks for all the compliments, I'm hoping to have the engine finished by sunday night and then move onto the cockpit piece.

haha mighty sweet :D
yeah the pod is small, very sleek, its not one of those big loggy things like the other pod racers (especially the one from sebulba, i mean, how an it even get off the ground)
anywayz, good luck on the project :) i'll definetly stick around to watch the progress

just wanted to add a render of the cockpit, spent half a day on it so far and im quite happy with how far i got, dont think the cockpit will take as long as i thought it would. Its at just under 7,000 triangles so far, not sure how many i will need to complete it but im hoping not as many as the engines which are at 83,000 so far (and very nearly finished). Any feedback always welcome.

I finally got around to doing a little more on the pod racer cockpit so here are the update shots, most of the work left to do is on the interior which is gonna be a challenge to get it to look ok as I dont have too much reference of the inside, thanks for any crits as always.

here are the wire grabs as requested. As this was one of my first personal projects I started modeling it like a game model and did not create a low poly version for smoothing, because of all the small details this is probably a good way to go about modeling this anyway so no regrets until now.

time for an update I think, started modelling the parts on the interior of the cockpit and also added some bolts and otherpieces that were missing from the outside, finally put the cockpit and the engines into the same scene also :)

This is really fantastic. I applaud you! :halo:
Unfortunately you can see some mesh errors along the side of each pod (near those little indented ovals). If you fixed these it'd be really cool.
