View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 77 - PlushToy
Black
15-12-2005, 02:20 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified
6, time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
Time limit - 60 minutes
(Important: Contestants that shall use Teddy (http://www.mtl.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~takeo/teddy/teddy/teddy.html) in modeling their entry have only 30 minutes)
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 21st of December 2005
Subject - Plush Toy
A little change for this week;
About a year ago Andy had done a change in the weeks challange (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=25433).
And we would like to keep it as a tradition:
There is going to be only one winner for this week for her/his modeling skills. The second award shall be given to the best presented entry.
You are free to texture or render as long as you wish. But the modeling is dues to a time limit as stated above.
Unfortunately unlike last year, we are not going to be able to remove wire frames for the week. It is due to the use of a particular software that we have to be able to check up on. You are going to have to find a creative way to present your wire.
Concept;
Even though a 'plush toy' is an intended word for furry or fuzzy soft toys, the modern induistry has introduced a variaty of none furry toys to the market and has accepted them also as a plush toy to describe that the toy is soft and intended to have no sharp artifacts.
Such models shall be accepted also. So all the Plush Gollums, Aladine's, Cabage-Patch Dolls are acceptable.
Just do make sure that the model fits the brief and is simply put: Cuddly.
There are many other "toys" out there that are also soft and to some cuddly; but are intended for mature customers...
Contestants entering such models shall be disqualified before our waiting for the deadline.
Andy, Marty, Fastrak and Black
Good Luck!
A Quick Starter done in MaYA and PhotoShop...
The BG and the model have been filtered to blend in better

I am not speaking for the mods, but that has never been a problem in the past, but I think the fur application has to be within the 1hour (which could be quite time consuming if the UV's are off). We'll have to see what the mods say I guess...........

Hmmmm
I would think fur in general wouldn't count towards the modelling time as it's typically applied after the model has been built. Imagine trying to judge a wireframe with fur applied ? However, I cannot speak for the mods so I'll let them make that call.
This will be an interesting week. I will definately have to put Rhino up and get back in XSI.

Maya Software Render
Maya Time: 20 min(usually don't do that, but saw the chance to shoot one out before I hit the hay)
This going to be an interesting challenge.
I'm not great with this type of thing (as you might be able to tell). I'll try and learn some more 3ds max this week, but I plan to start a big project with inventor...
Anyway, here's something...
Modeled in 3ds max: ~50min

Just thought I'd try out Blender 2.40's static particles (AKA hair) Though it does take quite a bit of points for the hair to look good. The wire is from before smoothing and applying the hair.
Though I think I'll do something w/o hair next.

Makonde;
Thank you.
We tend to test things out befor making them concepts. And also tend to present them in a form to help give you idea's if possible.
Black I had the same problem when i posted my 4 & 5 entry (fitness).Hm thats strange.
The serious bumber here was that I was working and I had a lot of stuff I would have preffered not to shut down last night :(
I'll ask around about it.
Black could you tell me what GMT is now compared to east asia and the mideast? please... It completely depends on where you are located. Here are two links where you can follow up on the GMT;
Converter Link (http://www.timezoneconverter.com/cgi-bin/tzc.tzc)
The Other Link (http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/)
The mistake that every body makes is that the GMT does not have any summer/winter time changes.
Nappa;
Are you seriously asking? I am not able to follow.
I am sure that you and most everyody already knows what type of recreational objects we are talking about.
NeHumanusCrede;
Fur can be accounted for as a post work.. as texturing.
If it has been done in the modeling time. DO please add it to the wire.
But if not we want to see the wire of what you did in the given time period.
Fastrak;
Hmm damn thats strange :o
Think we had better bring it up then.
LodLaiden;
Firstly no it doesn't.. you could attempt to make it all in one and you could attempt other wise.
But if the hair/fur has been accomplished after the modeling time. Please keep your wire frame clear off any ressemblance of fur/hair.
I didn't get your second question.
DaveLEWIS;
Hmm nice go.. but you already broke two rules...
Your post is not suppose to be an external link. And you are suppose to composite them into a single image.
Good Luck.
Everyone;
Do NOT forget that this eek is also about posting the best render/composition. The second award shall be given out to the entry that looks it's best.
As good as all your entries so far are... they are all far from expected.
Best of luck;

unfortunately, I cannot take all of the cedit. it is a shader in which is available at highend3d under maya - shaders - plush. i have however changed a lot of the settings to meet my needs (but still would never call it my own). after you download it to your shader library and need help updating it, i will be more than happy to give you my settings. (try it as is at first and make changes slowly, i just updated it for maya 7 rendering)

okay, firstly i think these quick challenges are a great idea- gives you something to inspire you a little, but you dont have to invest days into it :)
but i have a question... you say to show wires before any turbosmooth subdivs, etc... but i just made a model and i worked the mesh after the subdivisions too- eg added an "edit poly" after the "turbosmooth" and edited it more, then another "edit poly" and a displacement map...
its all done within the hour, but im just wondering what to do as far as the wireframe, as the un-divided mesh is only part of the modelling work

Yeah, I understand your process. Many of us have to struggle with that here. The best solution, if planned, is to screen capture before the sub-d, and then again afterwards. I'm sure you realize the great value a wireframe has in it's simplist form, it certainly is great for explaining on how the model is created and can be a terrific learning tool. As far as your entry goes, well, try to show the wireframe in the best possible way. I can't say what the judges will do, and it is possible it may be just fine. So give it a try. Love to see what you came up with.

this thing has been a pain.. after some false starts. I focused and cranked it.
For this one I spent alot of time on the render stuff(texture scene etc.)
I also modeled it out and still had a few minutes, about 15 and then altered the model a couple times during the texturing process. Minor timed changes. no more than a couple minutes each.
(Though I was thankful for not having to deal with trying to do the hair, becuase the version of blender 2.40 is pre release and so has some problems, that I found in the previous cute model.)

I was reffering to fake breast, ladies, penis's and simiallar sexual simulator objects.
They are never really sold out as to be called Plush. But my allowing some freedome to be able to use none furry objects would attract some contestants to post models such. Since it would fit my posted discription of a soft Toy.
I hope this makes it clear.

Welcome to the competition :)
First post coming off great. Everything is on the up and up and within the rules. Fur, as I've been advised, is considered post so it won't count towards your modelling time. Unless you are able to model it all AND get the fur on it in time, then you could post the model/fur wireframe all at once :) Though I think it will be easier to see without the fur on the wire. hehe
Typically the subject matter is varied a bit, but most ( if not all ) are usually harder than first impressions imply. Nice to have you aboard and good luck to you !!

all done in 3dsmax, tiny bit in photoshop.
1 hour modeling- was planning on working some wrinkles onto him, but ran out of time
3/4 hour texturing the bear- entirely done with standard max procedural maps and shaders
4 hours?? setting up the rest of the scene- not really sure at all how long it took, but four hours seems a pretty good guess
well, theres a million things id like to change, particularly the lighting (at the moment its just one area light, thats all) but its time to go to bed, and i promised myself id get this all done tonight, so here it is...

Imagine trying to judge all the entries for any given week. Then having to re-judge them to narrow them down to final possibilities week after week. I think the only way to cut down that number would be to limit the number of entries per person.
However, the underlying reason for the ' contests ' are to get folks modelling, not necessarily to ' win '. ( my opinion only of course :) ) As time goes on, folks who continue to model WILL get better at it. In the end, it will make it tougher on the judges as more and more folks start producing better quality models.
Besides, it's usually a lot of fun just to watch and see how folks interpret the subject matter for the week. Some crazy models have come out of some of these in the past :)

Black-3DT thanks man, anyways i ran into trouble when i after i set up the fur attributes.
i did the automatic mapping, then i attached it to the mesh. the problem is that there were a few baldspots, even after i checked the normals and remapped the UVs trting several options.
I also got some helpp from learning maya but that didn't help much and the final thing i wasen't sure about was the shading of the fur.
I did it but it wasen't what i was looking for so i got the Plush shader and set it up to the color that i wanted. It is now closer to what i wanted but not exactly. :hurt:
that fatal fur attempt took me a good 3 hours....

Lone de'Ranger;
Well I see you have overcome your problem of the wireframe... VERY well infact.
I generally retain from commenting on entries before the deadline so as not to influence anyone. But I have to particularily compliment your creativity on the wire and your effort to blend it so well.
TotalScore;
Two direct reasons that comes to mind are from not fitting your UV into the 0-1 area , having unconforimng normals, or having non manifold geometries.
I regularily use a newer feature of Paint effects called "Thorns" to achieve the little white hairs you would see on a persons face when I get very close-up shots.
What it basically is is aditional post geometry that you are able to alter and is not as growth dependent as the petals or leaves in paint effects.
I think a solution such would give you a convincing plush effect.
But always try to keep in mind that these are all post work.. thus they are things added to your mesh AFTER you have rendered. thus harder to control. If you are able to handle it with a shader try to.
None the less since you have access to Fur... I would best advise you play around with it and get the most out of it. I am sure you'll bring out some great stuff!

I bet Marty has something to do with this. &#*% brainwave transmitters !
It was kind of strange, I was making comments after finishing the model.. and you posted while I was doing comments... Now this time I just had no other choice in mind it just kind of came to me.. *poof* I'll model tigger.
Perhaps Tigger is marty's favorite... and maybe even the rower is his favorite exercise machine...

Actually, I fancy Tigger quite well. He also happens to be my girlfriend's favorite plush toy as well. But in my defense, my Brainwave Transimitters have been malfunctioning for a little while now. This explains why ALF no longer does my bidding, Roger Rabbit refuses to wash my laundry, and Spiderman let me fall out of that tree last week! I knew I should've bought the extended warrantee for the parts I bought from McFly Labs Elecetronics Superstore. :crazy:

lone deranger : terrific entry. and i agree ur concept of presenting the wire is really novel. The texture has come out well too...
Total score : I liked your bear....its very cute...and so real...Is this plush shader only in Maya? i'm still trying to come to terms with modelling in 3dsmax...so i have no idea about good texturing.

Diabolos: you got a good texture there and kind of like that character too although simple.
Radulan: hehe cool tiger model, the circles design in the bgnd is really going with the scene.
lone deranger: Like its already been told by many and Black its a v.good job. I got only one comment that is the brick wall and the teddy is almost the same color range, u might want to change the color of the teddy to make it look more prominent.
TotalScore: lol now I know what i need to buy more ;) good entry. but somehow i feel the metal kind of floor does not suite for the teddy bear scene.

Well a Teddy Bear is THE plush toy actually(Those who know French to some level would probably be better at guessing that)...
Look HERE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plush) is a link that might help you on plush and ANOTHER (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plushie) that may tell you what the toys are.
But if you read the concept brief in the rules page you'd notice that we are not limiting the competition to toys that are of Plush Cloth... We are expanding it to a greater variaty of cuddly toys.
Please do a search through the net on the origins of it... and also compair your ideas tho the models posted so far.
I believe the explanations given so far should be enough.

to find the right fur on the model takes much time cuz i can see the result just in render.in 3dsmax when i apply the fur to the mesh it takes render so long time .in maya fur comes very fast in render.so my question is ;
does fur making time include in time limit or not?

Lonederanger-
Congrats on making front page :) It is a novel method of presenting the wireframe and is a well done model as well. As someone also pointed out
you might consider a slight color change between the wall and the bear to
help him stand out a bit more :) Other than that, very nicely done.
On an unrelated note, UPS delivered my copy of Animusic 2 yesterday. Those folks never cease to amaze me :) I can only imagine the sheer amount of work that went into it. Take a look at it if you ever get the chance.

Ok-
I'm sitting here playing with XSI's hair / fur atm and its already showing me some things I didn't want to see.
For starters, I have a simple sphere that is textured with an image. The hair is picking up the color map and changing it's color based on the image beneath it to match. Ok all is good there.
But we are discussing a ( mostly ) short haired model here, just tinkering with the settings to get a short ' fur ' look is opening my eyes in a hurry. The render alone will likely require me to load Mental Ray render slaves on every system in my house in order to render this thing in any decent length of time.
My experiments so far on just the simple sphere have the strand count up over 300,000 just to get enough coverage on the shape. LOL Based on those numbers, it's going to be an overnight render :)
I gotta find an easier way to do this :)

Thought i'd have a go this week, as i've been playing with C4D's new hair demo.
This is what i came up with for my first entry this week.
Modelled in C4D in 25 minutes, Hair added within another 25 minutes.
Total Modelling time 50 minutes.
Rendered with 120,000 hairs in 6mins 38 secs.
Still trying to get to grips with the new hair module, but i quite like the results.

Hello ppl,
Nice and funny model till now, hope too see alot more and alot funny till the dead line.
And a nice presentation from Agamemnwn , and a nice model to, I like the image feeling.
I did't have the mood and inspiration to model something, and I wish to have all mood with me to make a nice and funny model, cause I like verry much the topic, so I decided to not model one yet, but then I find a funny and eassy to make plush toy, and maodel it till I talk on Yahoo with my girlfriend.
here is the model link:
http://www.emerchandise.com/images/p/NEM/pdTYNEM0017.jpg
Software: 3ds Max 7
Time: 15 min (but it can be easy model in 5 min :D, but I talk with my girlfriend, I play with the eye's and make funny eye's movment, without stop the clok.)
I model only what is in the wire, the rest is photosop. U know I make a wire almost all the time biger than the render and hope evry time clear, so sorry because now is so little and unclear, but the model is so simpel that I think U all undestern how is modeled from that little wire. If not tell me and I write NON ENTRY cause I definetly want to do more models this week.
I try to make a scene by cloning tha eye's and add some filtres, hope U liek it in a wierd way cause I know is bad :D, stupid model, but hope funny, and 0 photosop cause I verry litlte play with photosop.
Again for clear view:
Software: 3ds Max 7
Time: 15 min
see U
Agamemnwn, thats almost scary looking.
hammering3D, ????????
Here's another from me, I think it's a much better model than my first (and texture too). I spent a lot of time on a scene, but decided not to finish it. I plan to finish and use the scene to present a future entry. It might have detracted from the model and texture anyway.
A Christmasy reindeer thing:
Modeled in 3ds max: 60min

At first I wasn't over joyed by this topic, BUT now I'm loving it, I've been doing many tests with different fur/hair effects. :)
Anyway, this is just a quick starter from me, as my main one is still to be put into a scene.

Right I'll shut up now....:D Enjoy this little one...

I'll try and note down a few tips on K9 head and body fur. But that shall have to be latr on today. We have too much to do outside the whole day.
...does fur making time include in time limit or not?This was actually answered a few times.. It is not.
The fur is only the texturing for these demanded models and they shall be ignored in the judging.
As for why it takes so much longer in max to compair is that max evaluates a geometry tesselation set to normal data... A when MAYA paintes the hair in a seperate direktory depending onthe objects lighting and normal data and applies it as a post production process (You'll notice the Fur/hair folder in your scene directory with these renders)
This second method is "Paint-Effects" technology dependent and is unique to MaYA.
I model only what is in the wire, the rest is photosop. U know I make a wire almost all the time biger than the render and hope evry time clear, so sorry because now is so little and unclear, but the model is so simpel that I think U all undestern how is modeled from that little wire. If not tell me and I write NON ENTRY cause I definetly want to do more models this week.Thank you for the 'typical yourself' concern. But I think it is fine and am going to let it pass on. I doubt it shall be of much trouble in the judgings as well.
Ok-
I gotta find an easier way to do this The 'simple'est way to come to my mind is to lessen the count according to the camera angle. To decide where you want the angle and then to leave the model 'bare' where we won't be seeing it.
The second mehtod would be to again lessen the count but to texture the mesh with a fur texture sort of to stimulate the fur. So the result won't look as bare as you would fear it to.
A very optimal one would possibly be a decent coctail of the both of them. :)
The entri'es are looking great people.. Keep them up!

question to the moderators...i've found a better way to make fur just to second after submitting my image...should i rerender and repost my image?the mesh will not be changed anyway
Firstly to your first question;
Displacement maps DO count as for the modeling time if they are altered textures that change the geometry to improve the modeling demanded in it's making.
Displacements such as procedurals like noise would be fine though and can be thought as texturing in this weeks case.
Now as for your second question.. It is a tricky one since you want to change the displacement as I get it. I may not allow the modification or I may. I really would have to see the diffrence.
I trust you would be able to judge yourself if it is suitable or not. Act accordingly. If you have doubts just show us the modification you are talking about.
Thank you again for your 'all time respectful'ness :)

There is SHAve and a haircut which you have to pay for i think it cost something like $400.
Then theres a free pluging called "HAIRDEPT" which is free.Not sure if the site is still up.you can do a search in google.

Actually i downloaded the latest demo version of C4D from Maxon's web site, as it includes the new Hair module. Unfortunatly this module will not be shipping till January sometime i think, but if you pre order it now you get a nice discount.
So i do all the modelling in my full version of C4D then re open it in the demo version to add hair and then just screen grab the render.
I would download the demo and have a play with it if you are interested in Hair.

ok as i said some comments :D
lets start from the beginning:
Diabolos nice kaktor there i see you used boolean and still kept the model clean. i know how boolean can be a pain in the a**. i rarely use booleans mental ray doesnt like tris or n-gons :D
noyb nice looking plush toy . Very clean modelling. i like the lighting u choose to intergrate it with the color of the toy. nice soft shadows on it .
nice looking reindeer . nice modelling.
Radulan nice plush-virus :D i like the way u presented it on the test glass. the lighting is a bit low though and u are losing detail on the toy. maybe a soft fill light to conpensate .
great tiger on the second one . nice clean modelling and the textures look great on it .
Nappa scary looking toy . clean modelling but the render looks pixelated.
DOnt worry nappa u are not the only one that didnt know what a plush-toy was. thats were google comes into play :D
nappa, on your third model u used paint deformations ? i think is better to model manually the mouth and eyes so u get a cleaner model and the texture would work better with the model.
Funny looking snailmonster. the bump is too big though
Killdrith nice looking plush toy. is it z-spheres to adaptive skin? nice looking render and material btw.
Makonde scary looking bear u got there, reminds me of chucky :D nice clean modelling . the lighting is a bit harsh and u are loosing detail on the door u modelled. the texture on the plush is too reflective for a furry thing also
yuri nice head for mr oizo but u only used half the time u could try putting some more detail on him or make a body for him. the texture looks flat . maybe putting some noise procedual as a bump on it to make it more like a fur .
Garner great looking bear u have there. i like the detail u made with the patches and the painting over to make it look more like a furry creature
Vhector great head u have there. it doesnt matter that u didnt finish the toy. next time will be faster . thats the hole point with these challenges to make u work faster and better. nice detail on the eye popping out. the bump map on the texture looks kind of big though and reflective for a fur toy
Yedan nice looking toy . i like the integration with the background to make it look like a kids room :D nice modelling .
Tgmessi nice looking fluffy bunny. i like the fur on it
lone deranger great looking bear. i love the textures and displacement on it. the background u made and the way to present the wires for it is great. good job
Total Score nice looking bear. about the furs bald spots as black said it could be that u didnt map the uvs in the top right quad (the 0-1 quad) so u could just select the automated mapping uvs tha tu made and go to polygons normalize uvs to put it in. did u use mental ray to render the image?
NeonLeopard great looking bear. i like the heart around its neck. the lighting is too low though and u are losing detail . nice clean modelling and the textures look nice
Scrat nice toy. i like the texture on it . the lighting is a bit harsh though. clean modelling
Rooky nice looking bear . kind of unnatural posing though and the lighting is a bit harsh .
andoy nice looking bear . clean modeling all quads and the hairs give it a really nice look :D
jakedman790 i like the way u painted the overlaps of the fur to the plastic features of the bear. and the eyes are nice feature.
like looking legit . nice modelled.
hammering3D nice looking plush-fish. i like the eyes very much . the render seems to be a little blurry though.
Klash120 nice random kitty u modelled there. i see u modelled it in mayaand u used dome lighting? it looks like all of your lights are casting shadows. nice modelling though
-R3D- nice looking fur on the model and great background for the toy.
Dahwan nice model there. u are get better and better :D i like the eyes on it
mr_lemon i like the bear. the displacement looks a little bit too much for the toy
the_bully nice looking toy. i like the bump map on the texture. looks really nice
ouchieman1 nice Gingerbread Plush. like the texture on it. nice modelling also
artus nice plush thing. the cloth texture u applied on it is too big though
tshadow i like the tiger u made . posing it like that like a real toy . nice texturing as well
thatsmessedup nice giraff plush-toy. i like the texturing on it
panki scary looking bear . nice modelling :D
Marty_McFly-3DT nice looking stitch. nice modelling the seams on it
tanks45 great looking santa and the scene over the fireplace . nice textures as well
evil-98 nice funny bunny u have there. nice of u to post how u modelled and rendered it
nice domo kun. too dark a render though u are losing all the detail on the model
RockstarKate nice looking mouse.
3dmonkey nice looking cow plush-toy. i like that u modelled the grass for it to sit on
and thats it :D as for my entry . thank you all for the kind words. the snow on the windows was painted in photoshop and was not paint effects. some things about the lighting that could be better though. will know for the next project :D good luck to all .

for lightening I used one omni light + skylight with light tracer - after rendering I realised that the lights are a bit too strong for the floor but I didn't really pay attention cause the model is the one which is being judged!

Black-3DT your reference model is my favorite kind of toy, i used to have some like that one as a kid, i wish i had it now :haha:It has an enormous sentimental value for me...
When I was still doing Ballet, I was also taking part of an independent group that believed that even a finger on it's own can dance...
The whole intention was to provide a chance for those that can actually only move their finger.. or only move their upper body; a chance to dance as well.
And I MUST say that they were all fantastic!
Well this group had an international tour... And at a time had been in Germany. I wasn't able to go with them. :(
But while shopping around the streets for souviners, they saw this little moose and they said that it reminded them of me :) .. And got that for me.
Now I don't know if that is really a compliment.. or an insult.. but I love them all very much and this little moose meant the worlds for me ever since!
Okay.. that was a little TOO off topic.. sorry folks!

Ok, so it doesn't look very cuddley I admit... Anyway dusted off 3D Studio and away I went. It looks more like a clay gollem then a plush one but I tried. Anyways, any critics would be appreciated (especially on mapping). Oh and one last thing, I used blur balls for the gollem, so the wire frames are one with just the blob balls and one with the generated mesh. With any luck the image will even be attached for your amusement.

what a great week again folks.
Hmmm not sure how far this one will get in the judging but i was not in the mood to model out another teddy bear.
So i give you my cuddly excavator ( i think this is still within this weeks brief )
The machine was all extruded from a cube, except the wheels which started life as cylinders welded to the underside.
The whole mesh was then dropped in a hypernurbs then cloth nurbs, a collider was put underneath and i advanced the animation a few frames to try and add a little "softness" to the edges, by collapsing the cloth excavator just using gravity.
The whole scene was modelled in Cinema 4D in 60 minutes.
Textured in 25 minutes.
Lighting was an area light, an omni and radiosity.
Rendering was 1 hour 23 minutes.
Hope it is classified as a plush toy !!

So numerous are the good entries this week. And they show me, once more, that my knowlegde about materials is very small. I think material setup is one of my worse problems. I need to study this subject more. Instead of do that I spend my free time playing games like Quake 4. I should divide my time between those two activities more equally.
hmm. nice dog,. is it dead? heh great model Aogor

Radulan:: Nice 1st one, Cool model, and the fur is wicked, nice one
Killdrith:: Nice 1st post matey, Nice velvet texture, You might want to edit your entry so your wire isn't obstructed by your render. welcome to threedy.
Garner:: Excellent entry, not being bias or nothing lol, na its good mate, you give me the idea to add a noise shader to the model under the fur incase of bold spots :) Thanks and nice one. :D

Kitoshi:: wow, thanks man, I appritiate your comment a lot. :D
noyb:: Thankyou very much noyb, Thats what happens when your mum nags about the way your scene looks and is lit, and make you render it off 4 times; each time taking 3 hours to render lol:crazy: Thanks again :)
Everyone:: Some great work this week from all, I am really "into" this week, Which is strange because it's organic. But I suppose we all grow to like things like this in time. :D
Anyone:: I've noticed that models from max users are often triangulated, why is this? Does max work in triangles? Can you optimise them to Quadrants? I'm just wondering thats all, I thought quads were more efficient. mmm anyway :)
GREAT WORK ALL

Here's a model of my Wife's childhood teddy bear. It's a good thing the bear doesn't have a nose anymore because I wouldn't have had time to model it. This is my first experimentation with fur in Max 8. I am having a hard time finding a lighting setup that I like with it though (this one uses 3-point lighting). Does anyone have any suggestions or tips they use to get good lighting with fur (specifically using skylights and mental ray renderer)?
So far I'd have to say that -R3D- has my favorite entry. How did you get that thick, irregular fur look to it? Very, very nice.

Despistado very good entry. Can u please tell me how u did the fur. The lengths vary in different areas...I dont know how to do that...
Now this was fun! Not what I'm used to doing at all.
Here's my LightWave entry.
The modelling was done in about 35 minutes but I used the full hour for tweaking.
Texturing was a different matter. Probably a couple of hours playing around with LightWave's Saslite.

19-12-2005, 05:14 PM
Lepercon:: Thankyou mate, To get it irregular I just set the direction and lenght to about 40% randomness. The depth or thickness, I created 2 sets of fur, one short and dense and another longer and sparse. As for lighting question in your post, I used one main light for the sun and 8 fill lights in a quarter dome, plus radiosity. Thats why it took 3 hours to render. :)
TotalScore:: Heya, Thankyou for you comment, Im glad you like it. The ears are only extruded outward though, It might be the angle of the wireframe that gives that effect.
DESPISTADO:: Thanks man, I love your fur effect. Its nice and shiny, like real hair and its not a constant colour which is good. nice one. :)

prats fur and hair extension give you a total control of fur, there is lot a tools inside of that let you work in any way like scale the fur, the hue, atenuate etc. is really amazing and easy, all you need is do a click in the button "hair style" and change the form as you like, it is like combing itself
TotalScore fur in max is very easy you just need to comb the object and add color, add shadows, specular glosiness and so on, is really fun.

Actually, the eyes are beneath the hair. This is supposed to be a briah, which is a french dog breed. normally their eyes are hidden coz of their hair.
Once we had such a dog, and people tended to ask: "Hey, does it actually see anything?!"omg, how i hated this saying.
However this is a stuffed animal that my sister gave to my mother on her birthday. As the Hair is not going downwards, it might look way strange...

Once we had such a dog, and people tended to ask: "Hey, does it actually see anything?!"omg, how i hated this saying.
However this is a stuffed animal that my sister gave to my mother on her birthday. As the Hair is not going downwards, it might look way strange...
it is very good modelling and fur.ya there r these kinda dogs exist i know that.i just wanted to say this lol.

Hey SubCroC.
Ok, I were not that precise on the material. The plastic is not hard, it´s more like a kind of neopren and the bill should not be able to be removed in real life.
So it is a plushtoy for small kids with begining tooth and a lot of saliva.

Here,s my model re-rendered. I'm having some real problems with my monitor atm so this still isn't going to be right, but better.
With the quality of the models coming now, this really isn't worth it. GREAT effort guys. I'd put my money on -R3D- right now!

neonleopard glad you lightened up that scene, this model is too cool to be left in the dark.
thatsmessedup daaaang dude, i dont know how you did it but it looks real and hard to distinguish from reality. really good you got the fur, modeling, and the look right.
SubCroC now why would you say something like that, i really like hearing everybody's comments and advice , even if they are not always good; and the truth is NOBODY is an amateur at art, because it is the release of emotions or thoughts onto anything visual. Second, i really wanted to change a little in that scene but i just can't, i got a project right now and don't have enough time. anyways i appreciate your comments and please keep em comin. ;)
