Just saw King Kong, was wondering what everyone thought of it?
-I can honestly say I had'nt gotten caught up in a movie like that since I was around 8 years old.
Very fun movie.
-I've heard allot of complaints about Jack Black, but I thought he was good, he fit pretty well with all the other extreme characters in the movie
-That scene with the bugs was insane, I'm going to be itching for the next month.
-the fact that Kong did'nt make a dent/splat in the concrete when he fell kinda freaked me out but no big deal.

I really liked it, you could see true emotion in Kong. Some scenes were so fun that I had a bg grin during the movie, and others were really sad and touching. It took real talent to elicit these emotions from the viewers and I would recommend it to anyone.

the film may not be the best movie ever, but it,s probably the best film to demonstrate how much effort you can put in a single movie. PJ is a genius. I think this film is an instant classic. PJ just demonstrated that you can put loads of material in a movie that's just fun, maybe meaningless, but just fun... and he backed it with a deep array of emotions that really reached through to everyone even to the most sceptical viewers. Weta also demonstrated that it was still the leader in CG delivering a main character that is 100% believable througout the movie.

That was one good movie. The bug part got me too. I do have one big thing that blew it for me because I could not get it out of my mind and it kinda tore me out of the moment for the end of the movie. THIS IS WINTER WITH FROZEN PONDS. How the hell was she in a skimpy outfit and not showing some major headlights and freezing to death. How could she climb a ladder bair skinned like that in freazing weather. Tow months ago I did climb the Empire state building with a jacket and it was not snowing. The wind was stong and my face was hurting because of the cold.

Agreed Rick. Also, she would have had her neck broken many times. When Kong was shaking her and running with her. But whatever...I still think it is one of the best films of all time!!!!!!! FIVE STARS FROM ME!!!
I loved it!!

SPOILER WARNING
I just saw this movie at the cinema. First of all, hats off to Weta for setting the standard for the next few years. Peter Jackson is simply... superb. I mean, he directed four movies, and they're each in my top10. I swear, whatever he makes, ... don't expect anything less that gorgeous. He's the opposite of Uwe Boll, you could say.
King Kong ( Tore Kong :) ) is a hectic mix of character development ( for the first 60 minutes ) and two hours of dramatic action and heart wrenching scenes. Now, I rarely cry at movies, ( LotR really got to me, Sweet November at the end, Vanilla Sky at the end, What Dreams May Come... and that's it, as I recall ), but this had me literally weeping several times. My girlfriend was holding me so tight, crying aswell, so it wasn't a big deal ( the whole cinema audience was pretty much doing it too... so it's cool really :D ).
Moving on, certain scenes left my jaw dropped. Now this never happened to me, not even at LotR. After the first time the dinousaurs appeared and the whole stampede, I noticed my mouth hanging open. The battles with the t-rexes had a similar effect. But the bug scene, it simply shocked me to a level I didn't believe possible. Also the scene where they meet the "locals" and the whole head-bashing scene, same shocking feel. I had no ideea a movie can transfer such emotions into me.
It all ended quite sudden. And I hoped Kong would fall over Carl. Damnit.

I agree completely Freespace, sad that it's not doing as well as they thought it would.
I saw The Chronicles of Narnia, I was'nt really that impressed, it was a decent movie, but not any where near Kong.
I had forgot to mention that stampede, I was thinking the whole time while watching that, how the hell did they even begin to plan all of that squence out, that was amazing.

This was one of the first remakes that they did better than the first. The emotion in Kong was amazing. I did love the movie. I just hope though that Peter Jackson does not go the way of Spielberge and overdo the "Close Call" scenes. The CG and Weta did an awsome job.
PS, anyone notice by my typing. besides not being able to spell, that my "S" sticks.
Very good Flick.
I havent been so touched since....god, i cant even remember.
The Movie made me feel like a kid again, one of the most entertaining, and fun movies EVER.
I dont remember the last time i had to hold myself in my seat during a movie,
especially during the last Killer blow during the "Big Fight" (those who have seen it know what im talking about :) )
and im soo happy they made Kong act like an actual Ape, I had a bad feeling they would have killed it by making him a more intelligent, human like character, but that was'nt the case at all. Incredibly well done.

indeed... I'm still waiting for Kong to be off restriction so I can go see it for free... (I work at a cinema, so I can get free tickets, but only after they're off restriction)
Josiah
05-01-2006, 12:59 AM
free movies? What does restriction mean?
Josiah
Ilkejav mk5
05-01-2006, 04:23 AM
when a movie is on restriciton, it is either because it's really popular and the theatres are often full, so they don,t want employees to take seats that paying customers could have bought, or either the publisher company asked for the movie to be on restriction. When a movie is in restriction, no free tickets can be given to anybody until about two weeks after the release... King kong has an exceptionally long restiction period due to it's popularity... Basically, since I work at a cinema, I can just come to the box-office and ask for 2 tickets, and i'll get them for free... it's awesome... :haha:

I didnt think king kong was that visually stunning...I mean, it was really nice when it was a close-up of his face but when it came to him picking up the girl and the girl touching him and stuff...It just looked so fake...and I think they did a really bad job when they redid the streets of the city and stuff and all the cars and people looked so fake...ugh...but other than them two things i thought it was an ok movie...pretty good amount of constant action throughout the whole movie...

well, here's the best example of someone who can't appreciate all the effort that was put into this movie... if it wasn't for PJ and Weta, we'd have a guy in a suit, which is about what any other group in the world could produce compared to Weta's capabilities... for shame...

I thought the CG was amazing but I also have to agree that there were quiet a few times that you could tell it was CG. I wish it was One Trex agains Kong, I hate it when a movie production house has the feeling that one is good but three is better. It was about the clash of the Kings. By having three against one it already showed that Kong was King and that was not the way the original was. Also the trex would have ripped up Kong about three times when he had his teeth around him. The Trex does not have arms for attack, just a powerful jaw with sharp teeth that have to go through other dinosaurs with plate armor or scales. The skin fur and bone would not have held up. Great movie none the less so I do not want anyone the hear mr wrong.

Well, studies show that the T-Rex was too heavy and clumsy to be a real hunter like let's say a velociraptor. instead, scientist say that the most probable way the T-Rex aquired it's food, was by killing already injured or sick dinosaurs, or, like the lion, by stealing other predator's catches. So the jaw of the Trex was probably not meant for fighting intensively like shown in Kong...
Also, remember that it's a Fantasy movie with dinosaurs and giant gorillas... so PJ can allow himself about anything and i'd still be happy as long as it is still fun to watch...

I have to agree that the visuals were pretty bad when the shot was from a distance (50 yards +), but the closer the shot the more incredible it was. I kept thinking "How the hell did they animate his face?" There must have been a zillion morph targets and some insane rigging. Also, the dinosaur fight was the coolest thing I've ever seen in film. ESECIALLY when he rips the dino's tongue out with his teeth and then in the end cracks the jaw open and uses the "maxilla" to crush the trex's brain. Then he's all like, "yeah, I'm the badest mother epher around!" It was freak'n sweet.
Jack Black was a bit cheesy in parts, but his character kinda required that (besides, he's not much cheesier than a grown woman falling in love with an ape). I had to wonder though...how did Jack Driscoll like being sloppy seconds?
Overall, the effects in this movie were the best I've ever seen....ever. Except for those few shots from afar, Kong is the closest to photo-real film has ever been.

He just doesn't blend with the environment. You can see the screen job, easily. However, I don't see any way to do it better than they did. He is still photo real, but the environment composite is crumby. It's that way on every movie.
Ilkejav mk5

the visuals set the standard for years to come, so I can't complain on any details that seemed fake (i've seen a few).
On another level I think this movie turned out to be outstanding compared to what peter jackson did with LOTR. if you might imagine, PJ had 9 hours to translate a 1000 pages book with LOTR, while he had 3 hours to translate 1.5 hours of movie (Kong1933) and he still pulled off an amazingly fun (if not a little shallow), but still very entertaining movie...
Kong doesn't compare to LOTR as a movie (except for the VFX), but if you take into consideration the odds that were stacked against him (a non-speaking main character, rather shallow storyline and dialogs of the original Kong), it's amazing what he achieved.
qwed88
16-01-2006, 05:20 AM
"(if not a little shallow)", you know, everyone seems to be making statements like this about PJ's King Kong, as if the original was sooo much better story wise, go back and watch the original and then compare, PJ's perfected it.
Yes theres some flaws, but I would say it's a better movie all around than the original
Ilkejav mk5
16-01-2006, 05:31 AM
if you'd have read more carefully, you would have found out that PJ's movie is a little shallow because the old kong movie was shallow too. PJ's movie is undoubtedly better by a hundredfold.
now, before anyone else comments on my coment about kong being shallow, I have to say that that's not necessarily a bad thing, the movie is interesting, beautiful, and entertaining, even though the storyline is rather linear... this is the movie's strenghts.

Iīm just saying that ,ok watching cool CG is fun... watching a CG gorrilla running from a T-rex is fun watching a CG Gorilla running from a T-rex for 20 minutes straight getīs boring... and watching a movie with story amount of a 1 and a half hour movie, stretched into a three hour movie, īcause they just *had* to show more of the Gorrilla running from a T-rex for the most part of it, is not a good movie.

Watching a T-Rex attack King Kong: 5 minutes.
Watching King Kong fight a T-Rex, all the while protecting his love: 10 minutes.
