Judging: Choose your favourite 3 entries and mark accordingly.
10 points possible for each category...

Concept - How well has the concept been designed? Is this character highly innovative, or just another clone?

Model – How well has this model been created? Does the geometry look effective and efficient?

Texture – How well have the textures been painted/applied?

Closeness to Style – IMPORTANT. Does the overall project fit in with aesthetic style of the subject, genre or game in question?

Ok, here we are at the finish. :dance: To all the artists that joined this contest, the 3D Total staff & I wanted to thank you for taking the time to share your works and your knowledge with the Threedy community.

This contest turned out to be a real success.: ) There was a lot of pro work being turned out, and I’m sure that a lot of artists have learned new tips and techniques during their journey. :D

But due to the overwhelming post and work: )
I need each contestant that finished their work to put together a piece with their final model with there information. I used Nosaj462 final render for an example of a good piece put together.

Must have:

1) Name of the Model.

2) Total Poly Count.

As for your concept that’s up to you if you want to add it into your final image, But I’m sure through the main thread during your work in progress everyone got a chance to see your final concept & screen grabs with texture maps: )

Only one post per artist.

The winner of the contest will receive the Low Poly Mini-Challenge Excellence Award.

Everyone try to post your final image on the new thread ASAP: ) I suppose I should have been better prepaired for it: ) But lets give at least 5 days for everyone to get their image posted on the new thread: ) January 6th will be the deadline: )

I posted up Nosj462 as an Example: ) on the new thread.

Character bio

Imagine a dark and evil world in the future where negotiation is only pursued by force.

Assassin: HAUSSE

After the Great War that left the world in ruins and chaos, the battle torn warrior Hausse, continued fighting in the new wars for domination in the smaller tribes or clans that were left on earth. Hausse’s well cut battle skills developed during long years of continuous fighting, he is a self sufficient assassin, which many of his enemies fear. He is so used to his armor that he can move in it like it wasn’t there, his huge appearance makes his adversaries underestimate his speed and this makes him very deadly. On Hausse’s missions, he infiltrates and reaches his target often without being noticed if it is required, however, he prefers to fight his way to complete his goals and missions.

I got the rest of the pics on the other thread, Im really happy being part in this contest and I learned A LOT of valuable stuff. Thanks to everyone else participated and thanks Cyrenn-3DT!

All other final pics can be found on page 48 of the LOW POLY CHALLENGE #2 - Assassin Challange thread (not sketches those you will have to look for)

The complete model with weapons has a 4622 polygon count (triangles)

Here is my assassin again. This render uses only one omni with shadows. No advanced lightsettings.

The polycount is exactly 5000. :)

A different render (a realtime un-friendly one) can be seen in the here. (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=418059&postcount=703)

Wow! To be honest it was really hard to pic out my first 3 favorite models:) I'm dead serious, It was hard to choose to see who would represent my 1st choice.

We have alot of great looking models here.
For example
Zotechs texture job is amazing: )
Ilkejav mk5 - Had a great over all model & design: ) I loved his whole futuristic approach.

But I had to come down with 3 models that I thought deserved to be represented. So im just trying to vote fair as possiable.
It was really hard to pick between these 3 if I could I would have a 3 way tie without a doubt.

I think all 3 models are professional quality..

1st.
Jaji - By:Pedro
Concept - 9 - Great design and concept.
Model - 10 - Just an awsome job no doubt: )
Textures -10 - Completely fit the style of the model.
Closeness to Style - 10 - The way I precieve this assassin is that she kills with brute force, I don't think she has to sneak around to much. basically just stomps mudholes in you.
TOTAL = 39

2nd.
Cold Violet - Biano 3D
Concept- 10 - Excellent concept sheets - Very professional
Model - 10 - Excellent model - Look no normal mapping: ) AWSOME!
Textures - 10 - Awsome texture job - Has a sexy sleek look.
Closeness to Style - 8 Honestly this was hard for me to give an 8, cause she does fit the look. But I think if the model was posed better she would have been my favorite for sure: )
TOTAL = 38

3rd.
Nadeema - Nosj492
Concept - 8 - Great model sheet.
Model - 10 - Excellent model: ) Not bad for your second Lowpoly model, Mind boggling: ) Very Professional: )
Textures -10 - Awsome job;) - One my favorite parts of the character for sure: ) You should be proud of yourself : ) Amazing.
Closeness to style - 8 - I only gave this a 8 only cause the I felt maybe the weapon didn't go with her to much. But at the same time it looks damn cool. No doubt its a great add on to her. I just had to come up with some idea to seperate these 3 models in score: )
TOTAL = 36

But I want to congrat all the artsit. Their is alot of good work being produced. Just imagine your next attempt and how well you are going to progress: )

Pedro Toledo
09-01-2006, 04:46 PM
Great job everybody :)

I would like to congrat everyone who finish this contest! And thanks for the constant support on the wip thread! :)

Lets go:

1st place - Nosaj462 - Nadeema
Concept - 9
Model - 10
Textures - 10
Closeness to style - 9
TOTAL = 38

I really like the style of this character. She is sexy. As Cyrenn said I don't think the main weapon fits so well the character look. Looks like a weapon she may have found somewhere, not originally hers. I really like the colors, and normal maps are doing just great. Great job dude! :)

2nd - Ilkejav - Phobos
Concept - 9
Model - 9
Textures - 9
Closeness to style - 10
TOTAL = 37

I think this is the character nobody doubts would really fit in a FPS game. So, closeness to style 10 (since I can't give 11). Final image shows it really well.
I think there are some details that could be improved on the mesh and textures, but don't compromise the fact this is a really nice work.

3rd - Biano - Cold Violet
Concept - 10
Model - 9
Textures - 8
Closeness to style - 9
TOTAL = 36

I loved the concept! I wish you had more time to do the model. I don't think the final mesh is so sexy as the concept art, it doesn't have the same nice curves your concept have. About the textures I like the clothe painting, but the skin shadows bug me a little. And I don't dig the specular on her clothes. Also, as Cyrenn said, the final render isn't helping your model. It could have been the best entry, but I think you would still need a couple of weeks... But that's not bad at all since you got in this challenge so late. Well done mate! :)

Zortech - I really enjoy your concept and I just love your texturing job! The best painting of all in my oppinion. But there's something on her face I don't dig, and I believe final pose could be better. It's a really cool character :)

Car - I really like your mesh and the concept is really cool. I think you should keep working on this model, detailling your texture. Mask is quite nice, but the body is basically plain colors.

That's it.

Everybody else did a great job too. There are some really nice models here.

Let's wait for the next contest!

Cya!

OK, I'm gonna be a teensy bit critical here. Mostly because I want people to improve over the course of these challenges.

I'm not sure that conceptually anyone particularly nailed this one, the most impressive Concept I would give to Curits Martin's GirlFriend X, because it was a little outside the normal "assassin" approach that we see in a lot of computer games characters today. I especially like the fact she has a big 'ole a$$ and a lot of attitude.
Other than that little niggle, I think a lot of really excellent models were turned out. Next time, I would like to see a few more original ideas. I reckon these forums have the capacity to think outside of the usual confines of real-world computer game companies and can really push to be original, even if we have to work within the confines of real-world technology.

--EDIT--

Oh yeah, also forgot to mention that I was also impressed by the stylistic approach that big Toe used on his character. I would advise keeping the background of the image lighter next time as it is overshadowing the character a little bit.

Still, excellent progress by a lot of people, and some well executed work.
My List:

--------------------

1st
Pedro Toledo - Naji
Ok, so my concept mark here may be a bit contraversial, but I am being honest here. I think that a devil girl in a leather bondage suit is not necessarily too original a concept. However, the modelling kicks ass and so does the texturing and she definitely fits the style well. All-in-all a technically brilliant model. It has to be my winning choice.

Concept: 6
Model: 9.5
Texture: 9.5
Closeness to Style: 8
Total = 33

--------------------

2nd
Nosaj - Nadeema

Really cool model well structured and well textured. Conceptually... Again, fairly standard approach to the pretty but dangerous computer game girl character. Not bad, but definitely not in the same league as Texas Chainsaw Man from the last competition, which was inspired.

Concept: 6
Model: 8
Texture:8
Closeness to Style: 8

Total = 30

--------------------

3rd
Khorne - Korell assassination Droid.

Again, the concept lets this one down a little bit, though design-wise it's far from bad. I particulalry like the head shape, and the eyes. It's the body that doesn't work for me, and I think a gun and sword feel a little bit out of place, and could have been thought through a bit more. What makes it stand out, though, is the effective use of texturing, which really make this look as though it verges on hi-poly.

Concept: 5
Model:7
Texture:9
Closeness to Style: 8

Total =29

--------------------

Well done to all who took part. :D

Truely wonderful stuff here everyone. Love it.

Here's my 13 cents:

1st place : Pedro Toledo "Naji"

Concept: 7
Model: 9
Texture: 10
Closeness to Style: 9
Total: 35

This is just plain excellant work. I agree with Monte on the concept, but it was executed wonderfully.

2nd place : Ilkejav "Phobos"

Concept: 6
Model: 8
Texture: 8
Closeness to Style: 9
Total: 31

Although I felt this concept is a little weeker than some, it still is a wonderful character. Great job with the details, pose, ect.

3rd place : Nosj492 : "Nadeema"
Concept: 6
Model: 8
Texture: 8
Closeness to Style: 8
Total: 30

Nicely done, and cool presentation. I, too, think the weapon looks a little out of place, but definitely a wicked character.

Excellant work to all. Everyone should be proud of the work they did. Kudos to all those that supported them.

:D 1st place : Pedro Toledo's "Naji" character

Concept: 6 - I guess the concept was a teeny weeny bit too familiar for my taste.
Model: 10 - The modeling is what IMO made me fall for naji. edge loops, poly usage is perfect.
Texture: 9 - Th textures are pretty awesome too, the normals complemented the modeling and the tatoo was awesome.
Closeness to Style: 8 - She didn't particularily struck me as an assassin.
Total: 33

:) 2nd place : Nosaj492's "Nadeema" character

Concept: 7 - The concept was pretty cool, although it didn't stand out as a feat of originality.
Model: 8 - An Excellent model, cartoonish proportions were delightful, and the face was very nice.
Texture: 7 - In some areas, the textures could have used some more work IMO. The normals brought the model back on track, though.
Closeness to Style: 8 - I didn't particularily approve of the huge "Palace guard" hallebard, but the rest of the character really seemed assassinish.
Total: 30

;) 3rd place : Biano3d's "Cold Violet" character

Concept: 6 - Pretty cool drawing, but on a conceptual note, it was a little bland.
Model: 7 - Again, the model is fine, but it didn't stand out as it could have. it felt rushed at times.
Texture: 7 - The textures were quite good, especially the face texture which really gave life to the model.
Closeness to Style: 8 - The character really stood out as an assassin.
Total: 28

Runners up:

Car17's "chris" - the model was awesome, but in the final render, you really didn't look like you finished you model at all.
Khorne's "assassination droid" - I woulda liked to see the model without HRDI reflections and all those showy elements that cannot be found in games...

:roll: We have something waaay cool for the next contest. But erm... :roll: unless people can be bothered to vote in these competitions, I'm not sure whether we'll bother to run another. That would be a shame, the next one is gonna be really fun! :D

I understand that the new voting process is longer, but c'mon, I have at least noticed that people are being rewarded for their concept, as well as their skills. Seems farier to me.

Come on guys and gals, I've even written the voting layout in the lead post to copy and paste into your own new message, it's not that hard y'know. And it's not mandatory to add comments to your scores if you can't be bothered to.

Oh and by the way, I'm going to give a healthy rep boost to all who took part in this.

Ok, I didn't participate in the competition, but I watched it as the models were being made, so here's my votes.

1st
Artist Name - Pedro Toledo
Character Name - Naji

Concept: 7 - Good drawing talent, the only reason it isn't higher is the concept is rather simple and the design just isn't that original.
Model: 8 - Excellent job with the anatomy, however the model lacks details that could have made it more of an original design.
Texture: 10 - The texture is amazing! Great use of normal maps, and the overall texture more than makes up for the lack of detail on the model itself.
Closeness to Style: 8 - Definately looks like she could be an assassin.

Total = 33
--------------------
2nd
Artist Name - Ilkejav mk5
Character Name - Phobos

Concept: 9 - Best concept of the competition in my opinion. Though not completely original, you decided to step out of the box and create an assassin that isn't the typical standard. Good work.
Model: 8 - Good job with the model, the details or nicely done.
Texture: 7 - The texture is good on most of the model, the boots just have a bumpiness on them that doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the texture style.
Closeness to Style: 8 - It's definately convincing that this character could be an assassin.

Total = 32
--------------------
3rd
Artist Name - biano3d
Character Name - Cold Violet

Concept: 7 - Again, as with Pedro's the drawing, it's well done, but it's simple.
Model: 7 - The model is well done, but like Pedro's again, it lacks detail.
Texture: 8 - The texture is well done, and suits her well, it just seems slightly unfinished. This is to be expected though with how late you entered the competition.
Closeness to Style: 9 - This model is the closest to being an assassin of all the models. What makes it the best is the colour scheme, an assassin doesn't want to be seen during the cover of night so black and purple were good choices.

Total = 31

Congratulations to everyone who competed, this was hard to get it down to just 3 people because all the the models were very well done. Can't wait until next challenge, maybe I'll compete in it. :D

Kinda sad for the lack of originality, but the high quality of execution makes up for it. :)

------------------------------

1. Pedro Toledo - Naji

Concept: 7 - I've given a higher vote since this type of brute force assassins don't seem to appear in games often. People can become tired of ninjas and black dressed sneaky biatches after a while. So, +1 for challenging the stereotypes. :)
Model: 10 - Honestly, I think the modeling is perfect.
Texture: 9 - Good work on the textures, but something lacks. Mostly I dislike the tattoo, looks a bit like an afterthought, doesn't look like it belongs on this specific model - the pattern looks random, doesn't really take into account the shape and anatomy of the model. A good example would be when the pattern goes hand in hand with the anatomy, like some pattern wrapping around a boob - that kind of tattoos look like they are a part of the body, like they belong there.
Closeness to Style: 9

Total = 35

--------------------

2. Ilkejav - Phobos

Concept: 6 - Not much originality overall, but some details do look cool and interesting, such as the helmet - it's an interesting well designed element.
Model: 9 - A good model, but certain details don't look right. Like the ultra LP cubic boots and the gauntlet - they are too rough and lack detail to fit with the rest of the model, which is mostly curved shapes with more geometric detail.
Texture: 9 - Nice patterns, the colors work well, but in certain parts the metal looks too much like plastic, such as the gun and the gauntlet.
Closeness to Style: 9

Total = 33

--------------------

3. Nosj462 - Nadeema

Concept: 5 - First thing that comes to mind when hearing the word assassin, not much originality. The big a$$ weapon doesn't save the design because it simply doesn't fit the rest of the model and looks like a bad attempt to add some originality. Imo, leaving only the spear end of the weapon would have worked better when going for a typical design.
Model: 9 - the stylized proportions work nice overall, but in certain parts it starts looking like it's not based well anatomically. Namely the shoulder/armpit/upper arm part and hands.
Texture: 8 - constant good quality throughout all of textures, but there are certain problems, like the blood looking more like splattered watered down acrylic paint and everything being too clean - judging by the scars, blood, clothing and environment, the boots should've been muddy, the fabric should've been stained by blood and dust - in that case the overall mood of the assassin would've been more evident.
Closeness to Style: 9

I finally got around to try to rank theese models. It feels sort wrong to let so many cool entries outside of top 3, but I hardly have any choice I guess. :) A lot of great work has been done. In fact just completing anything for a contest like this in the spare time is admirable.

Damn.. I got three entries with 33 points. But it sums up my opnion about correctly. :) I see different qualities in the top three, but I find it hard to pick out a favorite.

A somehow strange design that does not really appeal to me. A shame with the crossed eyes too. But I cant see how the material could have been done better. The modelling it truely awsome as well. Looks like it deforms perfectly. The spikes on the club and the hair drags down slightly.

Zortech- great model and great textures, but the face really turned my off. A better look and a better pose and it rocks.

Ilkejav- great model. I saw your post in another section, I didn't know that it was from Tribes.

Everyone else had great things too, but need to improve in one spot or another, including myself. Take care and good luck in the next one.

I liked the concept a little more than the model i thought it really had a lot of good elements i like the fact it reminds lara Croft as a Mercnary and the Fact that her main weapon are the hand knife she use's i alway love watching movie with people that used Knife because we all know CQC is the best in any action flick The texture still seem bland mostly in area were there could have been some wear and tear at the face is what i wished came oout a bit better she has the body of a sexy goddess but the face seem to ruin that for me

perdo model is a real nice piece the concept was ok didnt really think it was going to turn into what he made it the texture was very good loved the tattoo the thought of a demon assassin swing a big club using Brute Strenght was cool but i cant see her in stealth mission creepying around with that big mace club unless she was just going to use hand to hand kills which would be more dramatic think of blade 2 with all the sercirty gurads came in and blade start opening cans off whoop ass on everyone. 1st
Artist Name - Ilkejav mk5
Character Name - Phobos

Concept: 9: very cool concept art, nice pose and nice detail on the armor in pre-modelling stage.
Model: 10: watched this one from the beginning and i saw a very clean mesh and a very nice pose
Texture: 9: would have given you 10 but the leg texture looks a little low res compared to the rest of it. but gorgeous color scheme
Closeness to Style: 10: would fit perfectly into Tribes or any other futuristic shooter for that matter. weapons are perfect

Total = 38
--------------------
2nd
Artist Name - biano3d
Character Name - Cold Violet

Concept: 8: nice concept, looks very much like a spy/assassin in tight spandex/leather. a bit clichéd but good none the less
Model: 10: beautiful model. the arms and hands came out very nice for the poly count
Texture: 8: the leg-armor textures seem a little stretched, as does the hair texture, but the leater looks fantastic and the addition of the shoulder tattoo is nice as well
Closeness to Style: 9: ill admit, it's as close to the style as it can possiby get, but i find the design to be too clichéd and way too overdone in the idea of " asian female assassins in tight leather"

Total = 35
--------------------
3rd
Artist Name - Pedro Toledo
Character Name - Naji

Concept: 6: this is the only downside to this model. although i like the fact that this assassin isnt a slender-hide-in-the-shadows type, i find the design of devil chick in a BDSM leather outfit to be very clichéd.
Model: 9: the mesh is fantastic and it seems to deform without fault with your skeleton. good job the only fault i see is the placement of the spikes on the club.
Texture: 10: this is where you shine. god i never thought id see low poly work of this caliber. if you arent already in the game industry, you should be
Closeness to Style: 9: for the style you wanted to achieve, you nailed it pretty hard on the head. looking at the other votes though, i dont think me putting you in third is going to affect your score very much :D

Total = 34

Well I have no experience in low poly modeling so my voting maybe won't be so serious as voting from experts, but anyway here is my opinion:

1st
Artist Name - Ilkejav Mk5
Character Name - Phobos

Concept: 10 - I personally like this style
Model: 10 - I see no problem there
Texture: 8 - Great but I think that could be a little bit better
Closeness to Style: 8

Total = 36
--------------------
2nd
Artist Name - biano3d
Character Name -Cold Violet

Concept: 7 - Since I would expect woman assasin will look like that I consider it is not very original, sorry
Model: 10 - absolutely perfect
Texture: 9 - textures too
Closeness to Style: 10 - this is exactly how I imagine woman assasin

Total =36
--------------------
3rd
Artist Name - Nosj462
Character Name - Nadeema

Concept: 8
Model: 10 - Great...like everyone here
Texture: 10 - These textures I like the best, nice details
Closeness to Style: 6 - She looks to me more like a warrior than assasin

Total =34
-------------------
I hope it's not a problem that my first two places have the same amount of points. I tried to be as honest as possible. Personally I like the Ilkejav's assasin more, that's why I put him on the first place.

When Cyrenn says it is, I guess. Failing that, tomorrow or Monday, when I can write a brief for the NEW comp.

I don't want to seem like a big whiner, but I might want to point out that there is a 8 points difference between 4th place and 3rd place, which is pretty narrow considering the other pointage ranges... if you could put that thought into consideration... I'll abide to your final decision...

well, id have to think that the point of the "points" is who ever gets the most in order will be the winners, and if he beat you by 8 points then he beat you by 8 points. that was for the voters to decide. I dont wanna sound like an ass, but theres a point system for a reason. All I have to say is just look forward to the next competition and just do your best, because whether you place first or last, its not winning that matters, its the satisfaction of completing a project, knowing you gave it your all. and that right there should be the real prize to you.

well, that was my opinion, since experience is the main benefit from this comp, then points shouldn't be that important... in fact I don't know why I even posted that comment in the first place... I should delete it... bleh

And thats just the ways it is! (I can do this everytime in the future maybe, it only takes time and patience but most people are familiar with that here modelling. :)

Congratz to all winners! Its been really fun to model something when at the same time there are other people from around the world doing the same thing, sharing progresses and c and c's. Its been a great time, thanx everyone! :p

I just wanted to thank everyone for their votes. I guess that I got 5th place. To me that is a real honor. There are some great artist here, including some professionals, and as that it where I would like to be it means a lot to get some good feedback from you guys.

I thought that everyone did a great job. Obviously some people are better artists or are just more experienced, but everyone gave a great effort, and I think that really says a lot. So congrats to everyone who entered, and if you didn't, try the next one. I'm hooked.

I know this contest was really for fun more than anything else, but this judging system seems to be full of flaws. A lot of scores seem to have been thrown around without much serious thought; I see far too many "10 - This is ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!!" comments. Next time around I'd like to see a small panel of judges, maybe just a few moderators or industry professionals.

That said, I was happy to see so many finished entries. Well done to the winners, as well as all the participants! :smug:

HEY!!! :D

I just got back from my vacations :) 12 days without internet!!!

I would like to thank everybody who took part on this challenge! It was great to take part of this fun.

Nosaj462, Ilkejav, Car, Biano3d and all others - congrats for the great work!!!

I'll see if I find some time to be in this new challenge... but I don't think I'll be able to. :(

Thanks guys!

Cya!
