Hi all,
I’m working on a personal project in what spare time I have. I am working on a short and this is the first character I have decided to build.
She is a soldier half human half machine. Think of Battle Angel or Ghost in the shell. If I can get her looking the way I want I will continue building the other characters. Any help or tutorials would be awesome.

I am just starting to use ssubsurface scattering
if any one knows the SSS Fast Skin let me know how it fully works.

Here is a Quicktime of a skin light test. it is about 10mb.
http://liquidmesh3d.com/wip/skin_light_test.mov
Now I am adding the hair. I'm useing the Fur and Hair plug-in in Max 8. In the past I used Sasquatch in Lightwave.
Sasquatch is harder to shape but has better controles for the look of the hair.
If any one can help me with it that would be awesome.

there's like a patch of "baldness" where the hairline meets.. but the rest looks freaking awesome!

this is ****** brilliant stuff,
love the light render!
Agree on fartbunny's comment of the bald spot, also blond isn't quite her color,
try giving her black hair, the contrast with the white would be truly superb, just trust me on this one ;)
Brilliant work, man!

I was up way too late last night trying to get the hair to work.
I am trying to get a specific look for the hair and it isn't working the way I want it to.
I want to Clump the hair to the guide splines but I can't figure out how to do it. And when I get the hair close to what I want it no longer looks natural. If any one could help me or point me to a good tutorial that would be awesome.

here is a test render of the hair. I still have some work to do on it but this test gave me a good idea of what needs to be fixed.
http://liquidmesh3d.com/wip/hair_test.mov
it is about an 8MB Quicktime.
Here are some of the textures I used. The full sized image for each is 2048X1024. I useed Photoshop and Body paint to make the skin. I used skin from the www.3d.sk web site.

Now that I have added hair and skin to the model I realized that the model needed to be fixed. the teeth that I put in at first were very simple. I built them in about 15 minuets. They worked fine at the time but now that the look of my model has evolved I decided I needed to up date the whole mouth and teeth. I spent all day building and UV unwrapping them and I'm gonna texture them tonight.

I decided to redo the hair from scratch. This time I am letting my girlfriend help me. She is a hair stylist so she is teaching me things about styling hair that I never knew. She is helping me out with color also. As you can tell I’m not finished yet with the hair. I would say that I’m about 75 to 80% complete.
I have decided I hate doing hair.

Wow, great job! I'm glad you let your gf help, an outside eye and hand is sometimes extremely needed for things. That hairstyle is incredibly awesome, hehe. That is some of the best looking hair I've seen come from the hair plugin. I can't wait to see the rest of her ;)

wow...nice! very good concept art, and the modelling looks great aswell!
Only i think she should be bald...not shiney bald but like only 2 mm hair. Not that I like bald girls more..but i think it looks better on a cyborg. Only thats just my opinion.
good luck,
I'm looking forward to see this one in the gallery!

I thought the average human body was 7 and a half heads tall? Y dont u just stand a women biped next to her or sumtin? Other than that body is coming out alright except her breasts look very odd lol.

Eight heads is better for heroic figures. She isn't ordinary after all.
NWH1983
30-01-2006, 11:04 AM
Lol. I like how you stacked the head to get the proportions down. I've used the same technique myself. Classical proportions huh (the old masters painted at 8 heads tall). Well everything looks good so far. Keep up the good work!
really nice..
maybe the breast is a bit squared on the side ..
I really like the boot ..keep up the good work

Here you go.
I am going to finish modeling the body before I finish texturing the character. The only reason I finished the skin and hair was for Reasearch and development and to establish a style that I Like for a short I want to work on.

Wow, she is possibly one of the cutest 3d girls I've seen yet :haha:
My only complaints so far is some of the boxiness on the some of the body, mainly in the upper legs/hips. Also, the breasts are a bit square, and saggy. I think someone that looks like her should have some that are small and petite.

Don't sweat the height of the character too much. Generally, the legs on stylized characters are longer. And besides, the height based on heads is kind of up in the air: I personally go with the 7-1/4 to 7-1/2 heads....so there you go. BTW, the hair on that model looks fantastic as does the skin texture. I really wish I knew how to texture like you........someone here needs to write a super in-depthtut on the subject, I think. Anyways, keep up the great work.

Hi all,
Sorry it has taken so long for me to post an update.
I got sick then started a new project at work. Plus I got the game F.E.A.R. that I couldn’t put down. Thanks for all the replies.
I take all suggestions under consideration when I tweak the model.
I started working on other body parts.
I normally start from scratch when building because I think that is how we get better as artists.
Butt I feel this model is taking way too long for me to build so I grabbed some older models I did and updated them a bit.

I wish I had more time to work on this project. I am laying out UV’s right now. I’m not finished and I know that the UV’s need a lot of work.
http://liquidmesh3d.com/wip/body_12.jpg
I put a gun holster on the leg and added some clips.
http://liquidmesh3d.com/wip/body_13.jpg
I added some stuff to the elbow pads and back.
http://liquidmesh3d.com/wip/body_14.jpg
The arm plates are a little different on each side. The right side has some armor and the Left side here has a plate that I will turn into a computer screen.
http://liquidmesh3d.com/wip/body_15.jpg
Also I changed some proportions of the body. I made a very slight scale of the head making it just a bit larger and then I shortened the neck.
http://liquidmesh3d.com/wip/body_16.jpg

In the last pic, she defnatly looks less friendly... nice!

I had a little time this week so I finished the UV unwrap. Then I grabbed a screen shot and threw it into Photoshop to test out some colors concepts. You have to excuse my messy paint job I did it really fast.
