Vray Problem

Hi

I have just aquired Vray adv 1.46 and have been going through the helpful tutorials on this website. My only problem is this, my default renders do not include shadows or lights? it is to my understanding that without lights in a scene vray creates shadows and lights itself? anyone else had the same problem? im running 3d studio max 8 could this be a factor?

there cant be shadow without light...so you either turn on GI in vray or place alight to actually cast shadows...if im not mistaken
