hello there friends....
here, i bring you the 39th Speed Painting Challenge, starting today and ends on the 10th of Feb, Friday.
Subject for this challenge is "Life Under Sea - Octopus". this gives u so much to think about and paint, think of all the stuff/life that comes in your mind about life under sea... :).
*IMP* - you have to have an Octopus in your scene, other than that, its upto u what to include accordingly. u can just paint an octopus in some sort of under sea environment, or add other creatures with that. its upto u.
so start painting and posting... :shout:.
u can post your artwork till the 10th of Feb. after that, voting starts... :).
all the best to all of u...cheers....

If the image is too big to attach then you must upload it to the internet somewhere and link to it using the bbcode image tags.

Hey Vidshank,
I am constantly having to lower the quality when I save images in Photoshop in order to get in under the 100k limit.
For the last challenge I entered I had to go down to 6 ( ), but there weren't any noticable compression artifacts.
I've also had to shrink the image size to get it under the limit as well.
Hey Waheed, is the 100k limit a system restriction, or just an average number the moderators chose? It'd be nice if it was a little larger than that, like 120k, I find I'm always ending up with 105k and have to drop down one more level to get it under the limit.

<<<<<<ENTRY REMOVED>>>>>>
The unofficial rule seems to be that hte octopus must be gigantic :P. I like it. 35 min on this one before I run to lunch.
The whole giant creature underwater thing creeps me out a lot, this was a lot of fun to paint, it was a lot easier to get the atmospheric perspective than I thought it'd be. *shrug*

Here is my little contribution. I just got watercolors a few weeks ago and this seemed like a good excerise.
I really like your atmosphere Brownboot. And the slimy texture on the octopus' skin is good. I have a little diffuculty figuring out the thing in the forground, is it a diver?
One hour and 40 minutes, a lot of waiting for the paint to dry.
Brownboot
03-02-2006, 03:34 AM
Ya its a diver... If you're having trouble that probably means I ought to work on it some more :P...
I dig the watercolor.

i've got a question, what are some of the programs you guys use to make these paintngs?
DerekSc
03-02-2006, 10:27 PM
I use Photoshop CS and a Wacom Graphire tablet. It's a 6x8 but I find I still have plenty of control (I just zoom in to do more detailed stuff).
At some point I'd like to do actual paintings for this, but the computer is less messy, and I need to work on my PS skills for texturing. :)

Hello!
I'm impressed by the entries so far!
This is the first time I enter a speedpainting-challange, and this is actually my first attempt on drawing in photoshop. Please don't be to harsh on me  .
I used a UC-Logic drawing tablet (a cheap one). Spent about 2 hours..
Looking forward to see more entries:D!

I'm brand new to this forum, but this whole contest thing is a pretty cool concept.
here's my attempt. it didn't quite turn out the way I thought it would, and there are some things that kind of got messed up, but that's speed painting for you.

A good picture, a few things can make it even better. A little something in the background. Some fishes maybe, just sugested by some simple shape. The octo could also have some more contrast in some places, like around the top eye. Right now it looks sort of washed out and with the light above it, it would make a nice focusial point for the compsition. Overall it is a good painting and welcome!
nucron
04-02-2006, 10:38 AM
I completely agree about the painting being kind of sparse, and the contrast also. maybe I was so focused on the "speed painting" idea, and getting it done in under an hour that I didn't really look at the composition and colors as much as I should have. adding the fish is a good idea. I was actually trying to make the eye the focal point like your were saying, but you're right--it looks a bit off. if I get some time, I might tweak it. but then that might make it go over an hour, which I was trying not to do. anyway, thanks for the suggestions, man.
nucron
04-02-2006, 10:49 AM
oh, and NordicDemon, I liked your painting. the colors and the simplicity of the drawing are nice, and you have good control of watercolor. I thought it was kind of funny the way the octopus was swimming in the opposite direction of the fish. it was an interesting touch.

It is nice to see a lot of newcomers.
Josiah, try to get some hard edges, especially on the places in the light.
Your drawing right now is a bit blurry. Here are somthing that maybe will explain it better. (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913) There is a good mosphere though.
Terminator, you rocks are really good. And the clarity is awsome. Maybe it is a bit too clear?
I think that a bit of the blue background color introduced into the foreground would make it a bit more under seaish. It would also connect the piece togheter.
Hope this makes some sense. A lot of good work here.

I have seen a few mention the time it has taken to paint, and worried about it, so i looked out the rule for it.
Rule No:3. Since it's a speedpainting, it should be finished in the smallest amout of time possible, but if you paint a whole day, you won't get disqualified, too . But for example 4 days is too much.
Hope this help some of you;)

Hey All,
That was fun - despite the crazy mad panic to get it done and posted! Twas my first attempt at digital painting (obviously :haha: ) ...really looking forward to the next challenge now.
So Anyways,
Fairly hard descision in my opinion but I think I've made the right choices:
1st: Artecnl .....Light, style (really like the cartoony look), perspective, detail, colour - all awesome, what more can i say - NICE ONE!
2nd: -t3d- (Second Entry) .....Real underwater feel got from this pic - texture and light choice 100%. (I wouldn't say no to a little more colour, tough - one or two bright fishys would do the trick ;))
3rd: VishyP (Second Entry) .....Light reflection on the sea bed is amazing (you gotta share how you did that ;)) Love the feel of smooth/slow motion got from the octopus. Again, very slightly lacking in something colourwise!? Can't decide what though!
Excellent job EVERYONE.

Great work everyone. So many good pieces.
1st:: Vishy P (both are great but 1st one's my favourite because of the depth and eariness of it)
2nd:: -t3d- (I'm honestly not being bias, but I like the depth and murky feeling to this, I like the textures too, nice and tough looking)
3rd:: Brownboot (It's got great depth and scary feel to it, and I get an excellent sense of scale with the diver in there)
Nice job everyone else :)

My votes are for:
1. Vidshank - Originally had you ranked 3rd, but the more I look at it, the more I like it. The colours and negative space captivate the eye.
2. NordicDemon - Very soft and pleasing to look at. Giving you props and the second place spot even though your avatar creeps me out. :)
3. t3d (second entry, #46) - Love the textures you used, always helps in establishing realism.
Honourable mentions: Brownboot and VishyP (#2)
I made a few tries at this one but they were terrible... so when's the next one coming out? :haha:
