MonteCristo
18-02-2006, 05:41 PM
VOTING DEADLINE: Friday 3rd March 12pm GMT

Judging: Choose your favourite 3 entries and mark accordingly.
10 points possible for each category...

Concept - IMPORTANT - How well has the concept been designed? Is this character highly innovative, or just another clone?

Model – How well has this model been created? Does the geometry look effective and efficient?

Texture – How well have the textures been painted/applied?

Hey Guys and Gals, well done to all those who competed this time. I sense a lot more effort went into the concepts this time around, and I want you all to continue with that process. Trust me, your skills will come in time, but if your portfolio is crammed with interesting concepts and not just the run-of-the-mill stuff seen in most portfolios, you will stand out. That's why I'm trying to push you all in this way.

Ok, voting is as mentioned above...

Must have:

1) Name of the Model.

2) Total Poly Count.

As for your concept that’s up to you if you want to add it into your final image, But I’m sure through the main thread during your work in progress everyone got a chance to see your final concept & screen grabs with texture maps: )

Only one post per artist.

my wires and textures can be found throughout the WIP thread. hope you like it and well done to all those who took part, i'll save comments on your finals until the judging process.

both character and rider were modelled in 3dsmax7 and textured using photoshop. i learnt alot from the korean Swordmaster Tutorial on xcloud.net.

Damn, this was really hard to decide upon. Almost impossible to pick 3, as there was a distinct even distribution of skill across this competition, so well done to all who took part. I hope it was good practice.

I think this will be a close race...

This one just creeps into the fore for me. You worked a lot on the concepts here, especially the weaponry, and you ended up with a really nice overall style, which IMO the others failed to capture to quite the same extent. There is a real ICO flavour to this (if you know that game), the washed-out colours, the simple yet effective texturing, etc... A futristic game that has a visual dynamic like this would be interesting to see.

This was such a cool entry - Easily the most original concept on offer. I love it, and I can just picture what it would look like if it was animated, so funny :D. The character proportions are cool, and they are colourful and eye-catching, which I like. I think the Bump-mapping is overwhelming the texturing a little bit though, I think a cel-shaded style would have looked a lot better.

Ok, so the character is a bit too generic for my tastes, and as such the concept score is bumped down. But the wheelchair is so cool, it gets bumped up again. The texturing on the chair is bang on and I really like the design. I can see this being a memorable entry into a game. I especially love the hand-plant pose.

This concept always caught my eye, extremely original and totally hilarious, i love the proportions on these guys. Although the model itself is rather simple, the texture job looks very good the color selection was very approriate for the cartoony style, and gave an excellent result, cogratulations.

The modling is awesome, specially the vehicle, the rider is good too, but not as impressive. Personally i have a feeling the rider doesnt fit well with the vehicle, thats why the concept isnt very good as a whole imo. However, the modeling and texture job is flawless.

Id also like to extend a personal congratulation to Nibby for the great improvement on his textures compared to other works ive seen from him. Very cool entry as well :D, and im glad you learned so much from this one, it really shows man. I still like it as much as when the contest started

I realy liked this entry, very original and I liked how you interpet the vehicle as another charecter. The texuring job is awsome, very colorful. The Bump-mapping may be a little too much, for thesort of cartoony stlye, Great Job (love to see a run cycle with this two guys :haha: )

Love the concepts the you started out with and the model looks just like it. I really like how the vehicle came out, but it think you could have taken the texture job much further, right now it looks like it hasnt been used much, some chiped paint and scratches would have been nice. The Character looks really cool too, but it doesnt say Arabian bandit to me probaly because the her skin is to pale for someone who would hang out at a desert. Overall Very cool

Concept: 9 - I really like the concept for this character, The scooter idea is very cool.
Model: 8 - The model is very well done, but you could have used a few more poly's to add even more detail (You had more than 1000 triangles left over!). Other than that, the model is excellent.
Texture: 10 - The texture is the best part of this entry, the colours are vibrant and lively, and look really nice and crisp.

It's the most catchy model i've seen in this contest. And I like the way he managed the polygons. Although, in my opinion, the rider is more like a "pilot" to me since he can't be seen whenever he's using the machine... But still I like it the best!

First off I would like to say congratulations to all that finished. Everyone put alot of work doing the contest. This is a great thing that 3d total has. Very awesome, I must say. Being a judge is not easy. So I just went with gut feeling on what I thought was the best. I would like to talk to both Mike Inel and Ilkejav after the contest. I have an offer of my own. I know this will be a model that I can put in my portfolio and be proud of. I am going to make a suggestion for the next contest.

An enemy boss to a single player game that would be in an Unreal 3 engine PC game
10,000 polygon triangles
1 2048x2048 texture space to be devided up however you want to use color, specular, bump, normal map
I think this is a great idea because many game companies are now using the Unreal 3 engine anyways.

I do think simply going down and wacking 10 points in each catagory for your top 3 is very unhelpful, Its easy to pick the 3 you like at face value.

mark them all down on a page and actually think about each catagory and mark each model on your honest opinion and you will get a more honest result.( in some ways marking this way goes past the gut feeling and merits the actual work that goes into a model)

Cheers for all the help while building,

The idea is not as original as it can be, this is more so considering the woman, its really close to being a 10 but I just found that compared to Agent-X his concept this one was a tad bit lesser. The modelling has been done excellent, the girl looks very realistic like from the final fantasy movie! And the texturing, especially on the mech, is done really detailed and nice! Love the lizard-like mech and the anime-like girl!

The idea isn't as original, a mech and a pilot, but its still a very cool piece of work. The modelling has been done really well, the clothes on the pilot look extremely realistic and the mech has been done well aswell (Just changed model score from 9 to 10 ;) )
The texturing off the pilot and mech has been done very well, just compared to the other 2 i felt this one lacked a bit..

It was really hard to judge these three cause they are really neck-to-neck in this race, but compared to eachother I found that some were just a bit better finalised... All 3 are done excellent and a job well done!

Nice job to all contestants!

Ah right thanks, yeah I put in a 9 for modelling at first thinking about not seeing the cockpit and the pilot within it very well, but then I found thats not a valid reason since the pilot is there you can see its head but the view is just not good to see inside good enough so i made it a 10 =)

zcubed although i agree with your statement that there is room for improvement on all models... people are entitled to their opinions and are asked to judge accordingly. this is a very subjective/objective competition. which is why more than just one person's vote counts.

cheers to all entries. with that said here's my scorecard:

Artist Name - car17
Character Name - scooter girl
Although this does kick up a "Reboot" style to me (it's a cg tv show)... the concept seemed solid enough for me to think about the actual functional limits of the scooter, how it turned...etc... The textures definately need some work, but from what was given gave off a finished feel to it.

This stirred up a final fantasy feel to it, mainly due to the presentation... however it has a uniqueness to it as well. The concept was good but flawed... because as someone else pointed out... the fairness of her skin vs the desert areas didn't jive well. The model I gave a lower score because the vehicle was great however, I felt the below waist modeling of the girl was sub par and could have been greatly improved.

Manni's "The Freak'se" was my favorite at first glance... the concept however has been done over and over again... i like the concept but the idea was to be original.

This got me intrigued... Where have you seen a pair of midgets, one carrying the other on a stick  Just wondering because i think this is the most original of all concepts lol, but perhaps i haven´t seen enough...

@Big Toe: no problem. During making the basic mesh for the high priest i duplicated the mesh and worked on both separately. So they started out the same, but got different geometry during detailing (not just scaling)

why do you ask?

Mike_inel - Arabian bandit

Concept: 9
This is a strong concept. I can see that alot of thought has been put in not only originality, but in making all the original design elements fuse into an aestheticaly pleasing whole. A well designed good idea (not a ground breaking idea yet, thus the 9).
Model: 8
Good economical modeling throughout all of the model, yet in certain parts it starts looking a bit too low-poly, like the thigh appearing a bit too cubical/inorganic and the flapping rag showing large polygons that would look quite hard if animated.
Texture: 9
The texturing on the mech is spot on, all the textures fit together nicely and unify the design well.

Total = 26

--------------------
2nd

Manni - the Freak'se

Concept: 9
Love the idea. :) Actually I haven't seen this done before.
Model: 8
Nice modeling throughout, looks like every polygon is spent well. Yet in certain parts it looks weird, especially the chief's wrist and back in closeup - doesn't look like the design is based on anatomy well.
Texture: 7
A bit tooooo colorful. The work put into it is very evident, yet the abundance of details and everything being so flashy makes it look overworked and chaotic.

Total = 24

--------------------
3rd

SeanBear - Larry

Concept: 8
Nice riide, dude! :) I like the idea, yet it's slightly familiar from a movie I can't remember the title of right now. Both the rider and the chair look like they belong to the same design, so that's a plus.
Model: 8
Good modeling all round with the exception with certain details, like the back in shoulder area being too flat (lacking muscles if compared with quite large deltoids/shoulders) and slightly too curved in the waist area.
Texture: 7
Everything is well textured. You can tell exactly what material each part is made of, yet everything lacks unity, doesn't fit into a single whole, no connection in terms of color or texture.

Total = 23

Great works everyone! :)

New comp ideas

1. It came from outer space
make something that wouldnt come from earth be it a alien dog a robot a evil space clown or a greyling possibly Japanese people who knows :smug:

3. Mutations
Take a person or a animal and dumps some mutatgen on what will you get?

4. This is my gun there are many like it but this one is mine or non like it
Make your own gun be it a new hand cannon or a new type of mini nuke

5. What if animal were people
take a every day animal and turn it in to a civilize being monkey in a suit or a polar bear as a street sweeper

6. small town or a towering Architectural marvel
make something like a map for unreal or FFX or just a building that you wouldnt see in this day and age

7.Warrior
Make the warrior be he weak and useless a more comic or a burtal savage hell bent on killing what ever breathes

8. Gang members
3 man crew rock your own set of colors

9. Tim burton style monster/person
have you seen nightmare before chirstmas or corpes bride if you havent do so now

10.war machine

Like I have said before throughout this contest, for the next contest i would like to see a boss character that would be in an Unreal 3 engine PC game consisting of:

10,000 polygon triangle limit
1 2048x2048 texture space to be divided up however you wish. (color, spec, bump, normal, tansparency, glow, etc...)

This gives you plenty of freedom to show off your texturing skills and modeling ability. And besides the unreal 3 engine is used by many game companies. Plus modders are creating content for it, when UT2007 comes out they will use it for mods.

Some ideas could be:
alien
monster
beast
mechanical robot
android
mutant
mutations
Something that would exist in the world of Gears of War or Unreal3 or in a world of fantasy.

Corwyn
05-03-2006, 12:25 PM
hmm, I aint really feeling the tim burton one, its a bit of a "you either love it or hate it" type of thing, and in this instance it just seems a bit too confining style wise. The architectural one would be awesome as a change of pace, or posibly the gang member one. even though its cliche, if it were broad enough it could be really interesting, throughout history humans have grouped themselves in to groups and gangs, anything could be done with a group from the future or fantasy, historical or contemporary.

I have a few wierd ideas.

-A character who finds themself transported out of their own time, to another era.
The idea here is that they have been trying to survive and adapt to the new environment/society for some time, and to show both where they came from, and how they have changed.

-A professional deeply engaged in their profession. This is a wide topic, but of course showing a marketing analyst and his powerpoint presentation will not be a visually impressive poject. I'm thinking more towards a physical, animated profession. Assassin has been done, but there are plenty of cool things left besides that. Imagine you could have any way of making your living, not necessarily relating to the modern society we live in.

-A robot created for a specific purpose. I have thought about this alot, how robots are so commonly portrayed with human characteristics, when a human-like form is not the ideal functional shape for most tasks.

that's enough for now i guess. Perhaps more later.

yoshimitsu
05-03-2006, 06:48 PM
oh yeah, I actually like Agent-X's Video Game Boss idea alot too. I'd rather do that than any of my own ideas so far.
In any case, the polycount and texture size should be more reasonable considering the level of gaming technology today. 10,000 triangles and at least 2048 squared pixels of texture space is pretty average for an important character.

ShadowFalcon
06-03-2006, 03:41 AM
I don't really like the videogame boss idea, especially from a specific game. The first challange was too much like that, and not everyone will have played the game that you want to do, I have never played the Mega Man games, or the Metal Gear games. I would hate to do a boss from a game I've never played. How about something a little off the wall, like a super heros pet?

I don't really like the videogame boss idea, especially from a specific game.

Just to clear things up, Unreal Engine doesn't mean the Unreal game itself. Many games now are using the Unreal 2 engine. Quake 4 uses the Doom 3 Engine. yadda yadda.

Mentioning the unreal 3 engine is an example of the power of the upcoming generation of games. They will be using many thousands more polys and much bigger textures than the limits for this last comp.

FrZnChAoS
06-03-2006, 08:39 AM
the idea of just a boss character is way to general.

ShadowFalcon
06-03-2006, 08:58 AM

I'm sorry i thought you were referring to Agent-X's idea which I supported. you were talking about the metal gear one I see now. I never played Metal Gear anything either. But i love robots and would not mind any robot related comp subject.

What if we took a page from the CG Chat vs Polycount war and make a super war general, which in some ways is a BOSS type character. Lots to play with when it comes to ideas, but the 10,000 tri limit seems like a lot considering we just made two characters with 6,500

We take one of the speed moeling challenges and go all out, the one I had in mind, (Mini Me). You make a characture of yourself, buffed up, or whatever. You could make your self the boss guy in a game, or a Tim Burton style person. A robotic version of yourself, or be real creative and model yourself exactly.

statichavoc

MY IDEAS:

1. Ice Age Survival:
Take a specific animal that is around today... such as a chihuahua, racoon, baboon... etc (no elephants for obvious genetic ancestor reasons) and modify it genetically/physically to survive an Ice Age.

2. Combination Game:
Take 2 of your favorite (book/movie) characters (from different authors/creators) and physically combine them to create a NEW character. Leaves possibilities wiiiide open.

3. Unknown Mascot:
Create an original mascot for a City/Country without any professional sports... must be appropriate for public acceptance. Such as...
the Topeka Twisters... Or update an existing mascot?

I personal like the first and 2nd one the most :) What do you guys think?

Dia86
07-03-2006, 07:08 PM
statichavoc, I really like your second idea too. How about instead of taking characters we combine 3 completely different animals together. For example, a fish-elephant-goat thing. Then we would have to explain how they can to be, or what they do in thier natural environment.

FrZnChAoS

the combination idea could be interesting. there would be a lot of variance in the entries at the very least.

GraphicDragon

I really dig Nappa's "Boy and his robot" idea. Of course the contest should include "Girl and her robot" as well. Some may say robots are overdone but if your creative about it, they can me mechanical or very organic. Having two characters allows for a good final scene that tells a bit of a story too.

There are also many directions to take such as "boy and huge robot" (Iron Giant), "child and small toy robot", "Anime teen driving robot", and "cute girl with dangerous pet robot"... etc.

This topic would allow for diverse entries that would tie together nicely under the same theme.
