hello there guys...:).

here i bring u the 41st Speed Painting Challenge, starts today and ends on the 16th of March, Thursday.

topic: "Still life". lets have something arty this time, something close to tradional art...:). but with speed. a lot can be painted, like, from a single object to a more complicated composition, having a number of objects. all upto u. it can be anything like, fruit on a table, weapons, your drawing/painting tools, boots, vase of flowers, u name it. what matters is the compositon and the use of colors...:). just looks around yourself and ull find a lot to paint that would suit this topic perfectly...:).

u can post your artwork till the 16th of March. after that, voting starts.

all the best to everyone...cheers...:).

Hey All,

Hey Warin...Welcome!

Waheed: Very nice topic....It's been years since I've done a still life picture.....I wasn't very good at it then and going by what I've done so far for this, I'm still not very good but I'm gonna give it my best attempt! Maybe I'll surprise myself :)
I really like your picture a lot - Fantastic style, composition & excellent use of colour.
I have GOT TO give Artrage a try (though I'm sure talent helps) ;)

-t3d-: Your first entry: Overall it's pretty good but I feel the perspective is a bit off. Also you have two different styles in the picture which don't quite fit together....ie...the bottles and glass are sort of a scribbled style but then you have very sharp lines too....the edges of the table and the glass mainly. A few more scribbles/brush strokes to cover the sharp edges and add more texture to the table would fix this right up imo. I remember from a past post of yours, though, you are like me with spending a very long time on a pic - (I can't seem to just throw down some colours in a short time....I need to spend manys the hour to be satisfied with the result). Since you managed to get this result from 2 hours, it's a damn fine attempt.
Well done
I quite like you second entry - Fairly simple and the shading is nice. Tell me you didn't draw each and every spike yourself!? If it's any help...(& you may know this) but you can create your own custom brushes easily enough in Photoshop - just might speed things up even more for for you in future pics.

Artecnl: I'm impressed I gotta say....I can't believe you've painted that with a mouse - NICE JOB! Excellent composition & colour and I love the reflection.

Here's my entry. Dunno if it qualifies, my idea behind it, is that they're not dead yet, but they're 'Still Life'..

waheed nasir
08-03-2006, 07:12 PM
mitch...:). this is a nice one indeed. but im sorry this doesnt qualify, as its not considered a Still life painting and wont be votable. this is just about the rules u know.
i can see that u got good skills, so why not paint something according to the topic? i would be glad to see u take part in this challenge with a still life paining...:).

see ya...:).

hi lucashug, this is good, i like it, but its not going with the given topic Still life, so this wont be votable.
u can see posted paintings above, they are of objects only. seeing your work, im sure u can paint a nice still life. pain some vase, vase with flowers, jug, mug, etc etc. like objects on a table and post it...:).

crackerlips: thank you for pointing out my mistakes, i went back and touched it up a bit. You are so right , i cant seem to throw down colour, i do tend to keep going back over it, just to try and get it right. The bottles and glass are standing on the floor, with the wall behind them.( well thats how its ment to look :) ) My second entry, yes i did all those prickles by hand, i am going to have a go at making some brushes. My son -r3d- made me a signature brush, so i will have to watch him and learn how to do it myself. looking forward to you painting, as i like your style :)

Artecnl: I see yet another good one from you, well done my friend :)

Hi world,

Here is my first try ever.
Still have to discover more brushes, don't know which are the best.
Made it within 1 hour on my wacom tablet with PS. I reminded a film with this shot of the helmet.
Hope it qualifies.
And Artecnl, I like your reflections too.
Hope to try some more work. Cya

Shame Mitch.....twas a fine picture - looking forward to another entry from you. :)

Thanks Warin - Glad you agree.....I don't see the point if everyone is going to just praise regardless! I expect the same honest criticism in return. It can only lead to improvement with our skills imo.

Josiah: Looking promising....did you a set up a seperate thread for your wip?

Hells angel: Your picture is fairly simple but very good. It looks ceramic yet painted which I like :)
I would've spent a little more time with it though - Excellent for 15 mins but the background and shadow take away from it a bit.

Lucashug: Again it's a pity this doesn't fit the theme because I really like it. It should be made into a comedy cartoon tv series.... :)

-t3d-: Glad I could be of help - I gotta say, I also like your style very much (thanks btw) Kind of ironic really, me criticising, since a lot of your pics are better than anything I can do ;) Looking forward to your updates.

Yuri: Very imaginative :)
This would qualify as far as I'm concerned and i hope it does but please post up more if possible.

This is a little pewter Boba Fett figure I have on my desk.
I originally started with something more traditional: a bowl of apples. But the pictures I took of them were reeeeally dull and the lighting was horrible... and I can't take any more cause I ate the apples (one of them was rotten, how's that for a sign?).
I originally had another pewter figure with it, but Boba took long enough on his own (about 5 hours, PS:CS1 and a Wacom tablet), so I took the other one out. Cheers!

this is a great kickstarter to a long-orocrastinated painting effort. I'm continuing on even after the 16th, to produce One Digi-Painting a Day (or something very very close to that).

See my entry at

http://www.johnuibel.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_itemId=3011

This is nice way to get my sluggish painting ability in a higher gear. Let me know what you all thinlk.

Thanks!

DerekSc
12-03-2006, 02:44 AM
Fat64: hehe, yeah, I agree on the background... unfortunately that's what my desk looks like! :P I had a lamp on right overhead, so I think that's what gave it the ultra-shiney look (it is pretty shiney to start with).
Thanks for the comments! :)

bexrex: fine looking onions, makes me hungry :X btw, are the colours in the middle compared to the the round elevation different from eachother?

bexrex
12-03-2006, 07:02 AM
Yeah, thanks. The whole thing was just subtle shades of white, which was vereeery boring to paint, so I tried to push some of the color (a no-no, yes, yes?) Sounds like it went too far. I should desaturate that central area. Thanks for being my conscience!

Hmm, that looks nice, but not sure it qualifies as a still life.

To make your eyelashes better, try making them thinner and NOT transparent. I can see through parts of them. Also, maybe a touch of highlights on one side would add a bit of 3d to them (since hair is round).

I also am an escapee of my Amiga 3000 and DeluxePaint. That program did things that still no other program (that I know of) can touch.

And a very nice painting. You'll like painter. I like the lack of details in the grapes and the paper texture is right on.

Thanks for the inspiration!

There's been so many entries since my last post so I won't do individual comments.......I'll just say: everyone's done an excellent job this challenge. :)

Here's my entry anyway - Got extremely bored when doing the table so I hope it doesn't take away from the rest too much. :) Anybody ever tried painting 'wood'? You know what I mean....Uuugggghhhhh :)

I have to say, misiopuchatek, I like the apple the best out of your painting but the rest is pretty good too. I couldn't see the texturing 'til I looked at the larger version though...gives it a nice canvassy look. I'm terrible at texturing...must download some tutorials.

I'm with you, misiopuchatek.....as I already said in mim's wip thread, it's excellent and I'd love to know the techniques used too. I really love the painted look but I just can't seem to make it look good myself so I resort to other techniques which I don't like to paint as much.

Artecnl's second painting (post#54) is another classic example (don't think I mentioned ...also totally excellent - the technique, colours, and lighting are fantastic :) Did you do that with a mouse too? Unbelievable!) - maybe it's just me but I've got to try out Painter & Artrage and practice a lot -- I must be achieving this technique. :)

Don't suppose anyone would like to put together a tutorial or two and post it up on the 'painted look' technique!!?? Pleeeeeease? :D

Thanks friends :o , so thanks for kinda words; I haven’t enough skills really to write a tut I think! :( But here is some of good tutes here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=5694) that I use some of them myself  ; although you need just a search on google to find more and more! :haha: And about my entry as I say in WIP thread also, I paint it in several layers but in each post I clear some of them to achieve a cleaner image for ease understanding what is it!! :hmm: and in next one I back again and work more on and clear some others before post! :( And in final post I drop (merge) all layers after some touches and apply some brush moves to combine them and achieve a paint look!
You can find progress of that here! (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=40201)

:D thanks a lot for the words crackerlips, well i just use the oil brush in artrage, i start with the shapes, the composition, later i put the shadows and lights, then i use the blender, and i use ps7 to add detail in brightness , shadows, textures, thats all, just use artrage a lot, i think this is my 3rd paint done in artrage,
however i think you do great jobs, this last one is so realistic, and in the last challenge, i think your image was the best.

pd mim, wow, excellent job, :D i think is the best by now

14-03-2006, 07:52 PM
Thanks for that, Artecnl - I'm gonna give Artrage a go tonight so, and use your steps as a guide (I'm not sure what 'the blender' is but I'm sure I'll figure it out :) ) Maybe I'll get another entry in before the deadline but it's unlikely. I very much appreciate your 1st place vote in the last challenge :D - so glad you like my paintings :)
Realism looks good and all but I want to be able to paint 'realistic AND painted looking', like yourself and Mim for example, have achieved. I don't know why but it's a quality & technique I really like, I think more so than realism. :)

Mim: Thanks for the tut links - gonna look at those tonight too :D
When I said about someone posting a tutorial though I just meant, for example: your wip, with more frequent update images and a word or two about what you did! It's almost a good enough tut as it is! I have searched the internet a bit but when the exact style I want to achieve is here, why keep looking? :)

Rusted: Good idea to get the face into your picture....interesting somber mood got from it. I still can't figure out how people can tolerate painting with a mouse though!? It would annoy me so much. They can give good results but I just couldn't.

Milan: Thanks so much for your comment. Your picture turned out really well considering it only took you ten minutes. I am unable to draw in heavy pencil or charcoal very well since I'm left-handed (My hand smudges what I draw and destroys the page :) )

Josiah: Shame you can't enter. Hope we'll see you in the next challenge.

Waheed: Great picture.....I love the style & technique you use when working in Artrage and painter! Nice One :) I tried both those painting programs for the first time last night and didn't pick them up as quick as I thought I would :( The technique required is completly different to Photoshop (for the results I want anyway).
Your picture inspires me to try again and practice!! :)

misiopuchatek: Cracking picture :) Those tomatoes look super juicy and the surface they're on is so hard and shiny looking. Really fantastic job dude!

waheed nasir
21-03-2006, 09:08 PM
alrite, so ill be giving u 3 choices and people can submit their votes, the topic which gets highest numbers, would be the topic for the next challenge, or do let me know how would u like to go. and let me know if people agree to this, or do they want to carry on just the way we do, like they get a topic and start painting.

:).

stephendm
21-03-2006, 09:26 PM
Thank you so much for your comment, Josiah :)

I think that sounds like an excellent plan Josiah/Waheed.....ie....3 choices from yourself, Waheed, and we vote on one!

The only thing is I think that if it does go that way, you should shorten the 'voting time' for the choices, to a bit less than usual!? No?

And in future, if anyone has suggestions of what to paint, you could take those into account before giving us the three choices for the following challenge - Otherwise I think there would just be a long thread of suggestions and nobody really agreeing on any particular one!?

Anyone agree/disagree?

waheed nasir
21-03-2006, 09:44 PM
i think to make it quick n simple, lets decide on:
i give u 3 choices for the new/next topic, just like i give u 1 as usual. then, a day for people to vote, after that i give u a topic according to the higest marks. this all is going to take place in the last challenge's thread, like, now in this same thread we do all this and then after having the final topic, i make a new thread for the new challenge. so its simple, only one change, instead of 1 topic i give u 3 choices.
so i think lets have it like this, its simple n quick and is not going to complicate things...:).

Warin-3DT
21-03-2006, 09:58 PM

I like the voting idea (it's the low-poly guys that do the voting, btw), and I agree that Waheed should pick the three topics to vote on. If he's running out of topics (which I doubt he will), he can post a new thread asking for ideas.
Only one thing to add, I find the wait time between contests a little frustrating (I like to have a subject to think about, even if I'm not working on it yet). So if we could get the voting going for about three or four days before the current contest closes, and then start the next one right after the close of the current one, that would be cool. Or at least have the voting for the winner of the current contest, and the voting for the next contest subject going at the same time (not the same thread, just over the same time period).
When the speed modelers close a contest, the next one is up and ready to go. I find that really keeps the interest level up.
Just a suggestion to help move things along, nothing more.

-t3d-
21-03-2006, 10:42 PM
waheed nasir-3DT I like it when you give us all 1 choice, we then have to put our thinking caps on and do the best we can.( bit llike the teacher setting out the topic at school :) )
At the same time giving us the choice of 3 might work, but we all have to keep an eye out to what you are giving us, not disapear for a few days then come back. A bit like the voting at the end of our projects, quite a few of us vanish, not sticking around for the voting. Im not nagging honest :). Im happy to go with what you set out my friend.
and as i have just read by dereksc i totaly agree with him, regarding the modelers way of doing it. :)

i am happy either way. do as before, giving u guys a topic and u carry on with that, or, give u 3 choices of topics to vote.
but my personal prefernce would be to carry on as before, only because, its a challenge of not only painting artworks but to do the thinking part as well on some situation that suddenly arrives. we as artists, have to do that all the time. things like that happen all the time in pro. work. where we dont get choices. that actually makes things challenging. and when we pass thru that we learn. i hope my friends here get my point...:). but as ive written in the start, im happy either way. so lets hear it from others as well...:).
and about speeding things up, yes, that can be done, we can have the next challenge start during the voting of the last one.

I think picking three as a poll is a great idea, Either way, - whatever picked will spawn great paintings.
The generator over at conceptart.org is pretty nice. Click go and it spurts out something like

mim
22-03-2006, 02:08 PM
there is no diffrent between these ways for me waheed, but seems in voting way is more contributes and more fun :D

also I suggest a third way that may be so funny: it is that the winner of last challenge give topic for next one or select it from sugestions! :dunno: but in a time limit, for example just one day! :dunno:

anyway I think also the next challenge must be started immediately (as possible  ) after end of other one (strongly recomended!! :haha: )

thanx, mim.Armand :max:

Choices For Next Challenge's Topic.

alrite folks, lets see how it works...:). remember, this will be done (choices and voting for the next challenge's topic), in the ongoing challenge, along with the time of voting for winners. no seperate thread!

here are the choices for the next challenge's topic:

. Spaceship (close up or a midshot, with some planet if u like to add).
.Locomotive/Train. engine has to be there, its upto u to include the whole thing or not. u can even inco operate it with some landscape, on a track.
.Guitar. electric or hollow/spanish, whichever u like to. upto u to make a player playing a guitar or just a guitar.

next challenge is going to start in a day.

see ya...:).

Never tried drawing trains before - so it gets my vote just for the challenge!
