View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 89 - Entertainment Center

The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframe we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images Files. larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified

6, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 90 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 15th of March 2006
Subject - Entertainment Center

Entertainment Center

The goal here is to use your time to model out the different components that would be used in an entertainment center. The television, dvd player, VCR, receiver, speakers, basically anything that you would find on an entertainment center. This does mean one thing though, all models in the scene must be modeled out in the time given. No additional models can be used to make the scene "complete." So if you want to add a lamp or some dvds or whatever to fill your scene, they must be modeled out within the time allowed.

Have Fun and Good Luck!

Very nice subject hope to have few entries this week. I have made some thing like this before. You can find my work here: HOME CINEMA (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=36945&page=2&pp=15&highlight=Home+cinema)

Blimey, this is going to be a tough one.

Are you allowed to practice each model, then bang it out quick, timing yourself. Then do the same with the next model? I want to operate within the limits, so that I do not exploit the situation.

heres my first entry :)
btw that is my unsmoothed mesh i didnt use turbosmooth or meshsmooth throughout the model.
also i found it quite hard to fit a good image of the wireframes due to the space taken up by the object in the render, so if it aint good enough give me a shout and ill try and sort it out better

sorry about image quality as well compressing it to under 100k really killed it :hurt:

modelling time: 80 minutes
texturing + lighting : 120 minutes
render : 8 minutes

software 3d studio max

Do I have to use electronics like a TV and a DVD player in my entertainment center? Or is it ok to do something else which is "entertaining"?

Looks Like a nice challenge one thing i need to ask
is it necessary to create the scene ?
or just make vcr tv and amplifiers .. ?

one more thing do i need to model every thing ? or i can make one thing
that if i only one thing like ONLY FLATRON

is it ok :dunno:

moleeth:: Nice Entry mate, I like the speakers especially :) Nice render.
------------------------------------------

Hey peeps, Nice subject this week. I've never do this kind of thing before (TV's, DVD Players etc) so should be a good week to improve on that side of things :)

Here goes my 1st one, Hopefully it qualifies as a valid entry:dunno: started running out of time so didn't start modelling anything else like a VCR, digital reciever or Amplifier etc:( I hope to do more in future entries :)

Anyway hope its ok...

App:: Cinema 4D
Modelling:: 80-85 Mins
Texture & Light:: ~ 1 Hour
Render:: between 30-40 Mins (Done a batch render of different light setups so not sure exactly)

Ok, I'm going to try and answer the few questions that have been asked.

Intersimi: Generally, the purpose here is to try and model out what's presented to you as best as you can within the time given to you. There are time when you may model something out and realize that you're not going to make it in time. Most members in that case will give it a second shot starting from scratch and using what they learned the first time through to model a bit faster. In the end though, it's best to see what you're capable of in your first submission, and then use that to improve as you move on to your next submissions.

moleeth: Although your entry is fine. I prefer it that wireframes are not made transparent. Objects behind the wire tend to get in the way and make the wire not completely clear and visible. Try to follow Fastrak's example of posting. In his non-submission, you can clearly see his rendered version as well as his wireframes. Your render does not have to take up the full 800x600, as long as your model(s) are well presented.

sLeM: An entertainment center is mostly used for electronic components. You can put other things on there if you wish, but you should try to stick to the general purpose of its intended design.

pleasent: If you look at my starter vs. Fastrak's starter, you'll see that mine is presented on a very plain and boring background, while his has the look of a full "scene." Either way is acceptable, but if you choose to make it a full scene, your walls, floors, ceiling and anything else in your scene must be modeled within the time allowed. As for your second question, you only need to model out the components that you'd like to model. So if in your scene you decide that the people who own your entertainment center are "too cool" to have a VCR, then don't model one. :D

Well, I hope this clears up a few things. If you have any more questions, ask Fastrak. He drank the last of the Wild Cherry Pepsi and didn't put any more cans in the refrigerator! Thanks buddy!

I know this is somewhat off topic, but I think Softimage has officially lost their frelling mind. . . .

I was reading about their new ' face robot ' software and when I saw the pricetag on it, I nearly fell over. I'm guessing the average user ISN'T their main objective. Though, give it a year and few sales of it and they'll bundle it with XSI Advanced for free much like they did their behavior software. :)
lol

SOFTIMAGE|FACE ROBOT Designer is available for $94,995 USMSRP, and is a complete environment to prepare, solve and animate faces. Designer includes the tools to define wrinkles and puffing, place tendons and fine-tune the mouth. It also includes all of the functionality of a seat of Animator. In a typical pipeline, a single seat of Designer is used with several seats of Animator.

SOFTIMAGE|FACE ROBOT Animator is available for $14,995 USMSRP. Animator animates faces prepared using Designer. Animator is a hybrid environment for both keyframe animation and motion capture. It uses a powerful retargeting algorithm that transfers animation and motion capture across faces and offers high-level tuning controls.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled modelling session. . . . .

I know, I should be utilizing this time to create some awe-inspiring work of art. However, I'm having difficulty staying motivated modelling and I can't quite be sure why. . . .

Perhaps I'll find my way back into it soon. . .

In the mean time, I thought you all would get a kick out of this site I found. I'm sure you all have seen the little crystal ' sculptures ' you can buy that have been laser burned into a three dimensional image ? Well, this company will now do custom ones for you based on any 3-D model you send them.

Like your avatar or logo? Send it to them and they'll burn it into crystal for you.

I found it quite interesting. . .

Heres my entry this week. Only my 4th model in 3ds max. Im pretty happy with how it came out. I also found out how to use light tracer so that was really cool. I wanted to add a lot more stuff like wires and put it into a scene but I just didnt have enough time (still a lot of trial and error since im learning the program) I also had to just change around the dvd player I made to make it looks a little different so it might pass as something else. :dunno: Not really sure how long I spent on the materials and lighting but I think it was around an hour (again lots of tweaking). I learned a lot while building this thing! :smug:

fastrak-3DT
Nice speakers and hi-fi seperates in your scene, love the addition of the teapots!

moleeth
good solid entry, another who has managed to cram a lot into the model time, good job. Could benefit from some textures on the hi-fi separates.

Like the feel of your first entry, has a nice soft glow about it, nice clean wires too. good job.

al3x
So many entries, all very good, lots of detail and clean renders, good work. 2nd entry - you've achieved a nice 'mesh' on the speakers, an unusual design. 4th entry, another very detailed model from you, like the feel of the tv screen.

The model on your first entry looks fantastic, although I'm personally not sure about the salmon pink wall! - great job overall. 2nd entry, like the material on the floor standing speaker cones, another good entry.

Long time no see! - glad your still taking time out to join in on the forums, and a really good entry too - love the lighting, such a blast of summer, the whole scene has a real good feeling to it, great work. - Looking forward to your second model.

Great solid entry, it's a shame we can't see the dvd player too well in the render, looks like you have some detail there on the model, but still a really good job.

Nice topic for this week i think and mostly nice works too

Cmart: really good scene. Looking very realistic. (i'm not sure with your wire, it's looking very interiesting but not like wire).

Trix: quiet nice scene (what to add some wire). good lightening and render. you are my favourite

Hope you don't despise all things made by Apple and/or starting with a lowercase 'i'...

Hope this qualifies as an entertainment center.

Thanks trix - yeah, the texturing was hard (well, for me anyway!) - I'm still getting some problems at the moment with overbright pixels, and black dots on my render (removed in post production) - also I'm struggling a little with the anti-aliasing, it's just not good enough for my liking at the moment, maybe I should have let it render longer - I'm using FPrime - only had it a few weeks, need more practice I think!!

Great job on yours - looking forward to the wire...

Well here is my attempt. The idea is that The PC has pretty much everything in it. It can play games, record Live TV, Play Music ect, etc. The amps are prebuilt in to the Speakers (of which there are 2 large ones at the front, 2 smaller ones at the rear and a set of Sub Woofers in the cabinet.

I did also model some glass frames that sat on the unit in the time allotted, but Mental Ray went all funny on me everytime I included a glass object and an omnilight, so I removed the glass frames :(

b3ta
12-03-2006, 06:15 PM
Intersimi good job - like the idea, shame about the glass, would've added a nice touch to the scene with some reflections and such. But even without it, an impressive entry. Are the speakers of your own design?

Well, we might be able to help you out... if we knew what software you were using! (I'll ignore the fact that you said you're confused about VRay, since you ignored the fact that you must post your software with your entry. ;P ) Also, I'd use the dead black space on the bottom of your entry to show a close up wireframe of your controllers, and use up the whole 800x600 allowed. But that's just to make it easier for the judges. :halo:

Thanks for your comments b3ta. In my design, I just wandered what I would like in a system myself. The main focus should be the screen, next the sound. I do like minimalistic in design, I thought that large speakers would help to maintain tham minimal look. In order to minimise, you don't necessarily need to go smaller ;)

Sorry about the sofa :( the stupid keyboard took me longer than first imagined, so I was running out of time for accessories. The Sofa was very, very quickly thrown together, just try try and add a bit of depth to the scene.

Yeah, this is my 'Media Center' heheh. I did the modelling on friday, but it was taking ages to do just test renders, and it was already midnight after id textured a few things. Finally finished it today.

I was pretty rushed, so didnt get to model the PC itself (thats a sub under the table) and the chair was.... well... rushed.

I'll do some comments while I'm waiting for a render...

moleeth: Very nice details and render. The compression doesn't look that bad - it's harder to tell a difference if you don't see the uncompressed version, so don't worry about it :)

back to school: I like the details on the speakers. The fact that you include the screw holes adds some nice detail.

al3x: You're third one looks very psychedelic. You have a very wide range of ideas for your entries, nice and creative.

SubCroC: You have developed a very distinct style, I admire that :)

betasoft: I like the old TV. Nice idea.

Intersimi: Gotta like those all-function HTPCs. Nice modelling.

Rooky: You're another with a very distinct style. You always have nice models to look at.

Everybody has done a good job so far, too many to comment on right now.
Keep up the good work.

Hi hi! Nice entries by all this week! :)
Details in the pic. Kinda lost some of the detail in the compression, but that's life. Not modeled based on anything real, just did a quick sketch and that's what came out. The electronic components are based on the real thing. Wanted to do a game system but ran out of time, so I plopped an old classic on the tv screen.
Looking forward to the next challenge. Take care everyone!

heres my second entry, bit more abstract. The sweep modifire is cool!

The renders turned out a bit brighter than I wanted them too. they looked fine when I had the # of Rays in Ray Tracer set to 10 for my test render. But when I set the # of rays up to 1000 for my final render it came out like this. Does increasing the # of Rays increase the brightness of the render? or was it just the grain that made it look darker?

default scanline:
first render: 5:15
second render (close up on back): 8:01

I appreciate your reply. Though I am somewhat familiar with what NURBS are, I have never used them in modeling. Every piece in this model began either as a box or a cylinder. I simply extruded and scaled, among other simple modifications, to create this entire model. To be honest, I was nervous working under a time constraint, so I planned a lot of stuff out on paper the simplest way I knew possible before I began. Thanks again.

But here`s my second this week! Got the idea - and couldn't stay calm after I was done with modelling! Again a clay render, but I suck at texturing - so I didn't want to screw up the whole scene!
I spend all 90 minutes -
loudspeaker - 25 min
video recorder - 10 min (went fast, because it was very similar the one in my first entry - and I knew step by step what i`m going to do)
chair - 5 min
tv - 30 min (my own concept)
splines - 20 min (didn't use any plug-ins or reactors, so it took me some time to compose them in the right places)
Anyway - hope you`ll like it :)

trix

you're sure that's the only thing from Evermotion that you've used?

sure.
the other ones are really near of it..
but if u check the wire, its kind a little primitive. (i used always box modeling, dont know nurbs that much)

and i have here on my pc some PDF files of evermotion..and i took care to make equaly just for practice.
its kid of hard...but i always have this..
but in fact that cant be a speed modeling challenge couse i used them (the blocks based on evermotion) not just couse of this.

but as i said..not an entry. just take the theme Enterteimnet Center and used as inspiration.

any more questions?

----------

and btw..
some times i take the ones that i have..
and put side by side..
and try to make equal, couse i always try to make as real as evermotion..
couse i think it have a better quality.
try some time..
for an exemple:
the sofa i had the evermotion one..
i import him and froze..and go modeling above him to training...
any problem?

-----------

and one more thing..
the only cd i have..i use for speed up the scenes
and the one is VOLUME 3 (lights)...
and when im modeling...for any client...that dont specify the the light i use it..
but when the light is specifyed (most cases) i have to model. couse of that..
when i use an evermotion block...im not happy with it..becouse of this i always use the lights so far of the camera...to it do never became so importat to the scene..
every time a model an scene..i try to put the best modeled stuff on first on IMAGE.
and for an exemple...when the model isnot that great i uses some cloth reactor...to hide the imperfection..
ok?

THX SubCroc, Trix and Pleasent for your consideration! :D

Subcroc-you probably have the most massive object ever imagined

Trix- nice render but the red wall is dangerous for the eyes

Pleasent- I didn't use nurbs... it is a mesh collapsed at level 3 (for rounding the corners), I was in a rush

Intersimi- I like your minimal style

Rooky- the funniest tv models: they look like characters

Mousek_ very futuristic but the plates and the glasses are not very safe near the speakers

Betasoft- I am happy for not being the only one with an old tv set

Bask- the most futuristic as well as the most friendly tv set

Ok, so here it is. My second attempt at lighting. Let me know what you think.

Now all you need to do is delete your original entry and you'll be all set. (Posting the same entry twice is considered double posting.)

Fastrak & Marty- are you rendering with vray? this is the first vray exercise for me...

My starter this week was a Scanline render. (That's the default renderer for 3DSMax) Fastrak's starter this week was a V-Ray render. He's pretty good at that stuff huh? :)

Hi everyone
Tough competition this week =)

Here s my entry for this week

Modeling time : 90 min
Lights and textures : 2 hours
software used : 3D Studio Max 6
time for my very slow computer used to generate this rather simple (but with GI) image : a very long and painfull 27 hours... HA !
I was so scared to have a power faliure... it would have totaly pushed me over the edge...

hi all
i just post for congrats trix for his entry ! i like the lightening and the feeling of the scene. :lame:
i have a tiny critics about the dark plastic surface on the ground.
(first the uv is a bit big i think)
I understand you don't want to hurt youself with you wet foot :smug: but i think its a concept error......it's looks like industrial ground ;i thing something like a carpet looks better (vraydisplacement  ) for the sweet feeling of the scene.
good one guys!and good luck for the other challenger

ufff...I can't belive I made it, I did't see how late is it and make render tests, and then I composite the image in 10 min with wire grab and stuff :D,

Anyway, I don't think that litle render will passs the judge, is the most unclear entry I ever post but I rush like hell :), and I try to present the wire clear as I can to compensate smal render, but smart me I make the plane for projections so big like that was the most complex model in the scene, yes a verry complex box :( where do I think :( ...well anyway I was't so pleas with the model, so kill it ;P
