yes mim, any kind.
stephendm
23-03-2006, 08:31 PM
Sounds like this will be a good one. :)
Quick question Waheed:
I'm trying to broaden my techniques and style by expermenting with Photoshop and I was wondering......in the challenges, is it allowed, to use the Photoshop 'filters' in our paintings? For example, could I use the 'blur' filter in my picture .....simply to put an effect on part or all of my painting or does it have to be all done with brushes?
JHarford
23-03-2006, 09:22 PM
Can we submit more than one entry?
waheed nasir
23-03-2006, 09:54 PM
hi there...yes crackerlips..u can use filters. the thing thats not allowed, is to use direct foreign images or pieces of those in your artwork. u can surely use filters on your painting stuff...:).
cgstripe, yes u can submit more than one pieces. no wip steps though, but u can surely post more than one finished artworks...:). a lot of contestants submit about 2 to 3 pieces in one challenge. all seperate and finished.
:).
JHarford
23-03-2006, 10:19 PM

24-03-2006, 07:32 PM
Oh yes, well done Cg! are you going to work some more on it or is that a finished one?
waheed nasir
24-03-2006, 07:46 PM
hi folks...:). just to remind everyone...only finished pieces must be sumitted. pls remember its not a WIP thread. u can post more than one artwork, but every single work must be completely done before posting.
thats good cgstripe...:). i like your 3rd painting the most.
:).

cgstripe, looks like you paint alot like craig mullins.
Warin-3DT
25-03-2006, 05:26 PM
I like your unique style CG and also the way you play with color..well done.
I also think it would greater if another parts, besides train head, is detailed too not just only the orange or yellow lines on them. But no need to do any more on trees or sky or house as they are just accessory details.
This is my opinion:)
Anymore entry? We are looking forward to seeing more entries!

I don't know the rules, I made this one some time ago, I dunno if it's allowed to use old artworks.
But...for the fun of it, it took me 30-40 minutes, don't remember.

Ok, guys! I roughed out my concept, and did a little bit of rendering (a little bit, beeing the key words, hehe.)
I am not a master pen-wealder, but I am trying XD
Short Fiction:
This is an industrial train, used for transportation of items and goods.
The train runs silent, and is often used for inter-city tasks in the middle of the night.
Equipment:
- Adobe Photoshop CS2
- Wacom Graphire 3
- About 2 Hours (slow sketcher :p)
EDIT:
Oh yeah, and I forgot to mention. The train is hanging under the tracks, if that was unclear.
So here it is:

Hey all,
Been a bit busy recently and have'nt had a chance to post but I got a few minutes now :)
Cgstripe: Very nice entries. Your style really adds to the destruction and damage in the scenes in your first two. Really like the clolurs and effect the third one has too but I think your second one is my favourite.
Great job :)
misiopuchatek: (First Entry) Very inspired image. Excellent idea. I really like the characters...they give the whole picture it's dark mood and scale. Love the lighting too :)
Your second pic is nice and metallic looking & shiny. I might have put in a bit more texture for dirt and burnt diesel..etc though as it looks nearly too clean and perfect but apart from that very good. I love the black&white.
Undertow: Love the shape of the locomotive. The detail couldn't really get much better using a mouse - nice work. I'd really like to see what your capable of if you had yourself a tablet! Some nice texturing in there too. :)
Yuri: Quite simple but nice job with the colours (and blending of) and design. A small bit more shading and a more detailed background & tracks could go a long way though imo.
Max4ever: Your picture is pretty amazing. It would take me hours to come even close to that render never mind 30-40 mins. A lot of it is fairly simple but the motion effect and the lighting is excellent. Very professionally done :)
Antievo: You say you 'roughed out your concept'....so is this not a finished work? It's looking very good either way. Really interesting design and I like the monotone shading.
That's all for now anyway ;) I Hope to have an entry in shortly. Seems to be a tough enough challenge this time. Best of luck :)

I definitely do Warin, it's excellent :D Many thanks again.
So I finally got my Locomotive finished. Just about 7hrs in Photoshop using Active XP-Pen Tablet & pic for reference. Hope you all like...
Oh nearly forgot...I title it "Dream Train" (like 'Steam Train'...get it!? :)) - It's kind of similar to a dream I once had! ;)

Your new entry is good as always...but abit curious..is it not too blur?

30-03-2006, 10:08 PM
Thanks for the crit, Warin. You might be right. I kind of did that on purpose though to make it look more 'Dream-like'...but maybe I went a bit overboard!? :)
It does help cover up some of my bad penmanship though too ;)
Everyone C&C appreciated.

30-03-2006, 10:27 PM
Oh I see, I get your point but I was thinking a good picture should has its focus. Some parts of the train or background? could be painted blury but not whole train...well maybe it is just my personal taste.

30-03-2006, 10:43 PM
wowĄ its good to see this amazing entries, i hope i have some free time :S i have a lot of work, :S
the good news is thai i buy a wacom, and im learning how to use it, by now i feel more comfortable than the mouse, maybe today or tomoroww i do a paint,
cheers and have a great day :D
max4ever - I really love the textures you create here, on the metals and also the orange and cyan volume lights on the front(laser like) really awesome you have completly diffrent style in this challenge; all thing is ok, just the three bulb lights on top of train, mmmm... I think really don't needed, plus that seems it isn't aerodynamic that is expected for this ultra speed train, anyway one of favorites! ;)
crackerlips - nice man, specially I like the splattered highlights on the train, really dramatic! ;) also just abit blured ;)
artecnl - cheers , now what I expect from you?! :( , You was so awesome just by a mouse !!! and now with a wacom ! oh no more chance to me!! :hurt: ;) :D
n I post some other quick sketches on WIP thread, I'm not satisfied with but maybe tommorow I spend more time n post some works here ;) (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=40201&page=2)

hey, I haven't posted anything in a long while. I don't have much time these days, so I made this a really speedy speed paint. I usually don't look at other paintings until I'm done with my own. so now that I'm seeing all the great work for this interesting topic, I feel like mine is kind of inadequate. but oh, well. I had a plan, and I'm sticking to it. enjoy.

lucashug, you have a very interesting style. it reminds me of children's story-books and things like that. I like the second one especially - very Miyazaki-like, as you said.
*edit*: whoa, you posted right before I got done posting about you. the English title of that movie is "My Neighbor Totoro."

Hey guys
This is my first entry into a speed painting challenge
I'm fairly new to digital painting/illustration and what-not, but I definetely have more of a background as a traditional media (mainly charcoal). I'm kinda hoping to augment my abilities with these things here, just as with my 3D Modelling. :)
Anyways, here's my entry. Maybe an hour and a half to two hours of work.

Hi every one nice to see. And I have tried to work from the style of matte painting in the topic . Is it acceptable or not . still it is 20% finished . Having no time I am keeping it. I have used photographic sky after i used some filter and adjustment but the Train is pure hand made.

03-04-2006, 11:22 AM
nice work lighter .. i like this train i even thought of do it as my entry to the challenge..it would've been better if you added more details but so far so good, keep on the good work :haha:
good work milan... may be you should work more with the clouds and the sky to fit the scene..it looks too real considering the color mode of the train and the broken bridge
nice idea by the way ;)
great work as always n wellcome to new guys on the board ;)

very very goof cracker lips... i like your pic ... well done indeed,, iam intending to buy a tablet soon .. i didn't have enough money but i will do some archeticture artwork for some one.. and with the money i will buy the tablet... and the real creativity will begin..
can any one tell is the " genius tablet " good or not.. i can't find any other brand around here
if you can't find any more brands then buy it, otherwise I recommend you vacom ;)

ximahmoud - The same thing was happende with me. before a month I haven't a tablet and I was searching for the best one and I took a lot suggestion from here I want to thanks them who suggested. every one says the wacom is the best . I searched In the market I didn't find assept One Gunius. and I rember Nasirs sentences weather it is big or small or any brands tablets. It depand upon your hand milan. I f your hands r smooth u can do well with it .I make a quick decision and bought it . I think there is difference between other tablet and wacom . If you can afford u can buy wacom other wise go and pick up the genius. It is in very low cost. but friend Now I am having a little probem with it. the problem is while I try to make a straight line It ran out of control because of its nib.

crackerlips. same, good light.
well ximahmoud, everywhere i search reviews about tablets, i see wacom is the best, nd is more expensive than the genious, but it desserve it, you get a lot of beneffits, like, you never use batteries on your mouse or pen, the feel of the pen is great, so light, i have one week or less with it ans is so addictive :D
well thats all,

Milan, I hate to break it to you, but using photos in your artwork is against the rules here. Better paint your own sky and smoke or you'll get dq'ed. The rest looks great, so hurry and replace the sky while you can! :)

hi ximahmoud, yes, Genius is a good brand too and quite cheap as compared to other expensive brands, ive used it once and my friends use it too, no complains. i think u go for it. its pen is bit heavy, because of the cell i guess. but ull get use to it. u can get more suggestions from people here, just wait a bit...all the best...:).
one more thing, in my humble opinion, its good to get Genius, as its quite cheap, use it, afterwards, u can go for an expensive brand later...:).
thats a good one mim...:).

hi milan, u cannot post an artwork here, with photo elements in it. u still have time till tomorrow, this hour. so u can submit this or a new one, but all painted. look at any image and paint from there, but putting foreign images in an artwork here, is against rules. see ya with a new painting...:).

thank you guys very much...mim, milan, artencel, waheed.. i will wait for a week or something . i will try to find the wacom,, if not i will go for the genius any way.. i don think i will have a problem with a heavy stylus...my hand are a little big and a small pen can make mo do more effort.. but in the other hand i need i smooth one too... any way i will wait and see.............thank you guys again very much

ximahmoud: Hi, I have Genius tablet too. I'm not a professional artist, I'm using it mostly for painting textures and I have no problem with it. I totally agree with waheed nasir, this tablet is much cheaper than for example Wacom tablets. So it's good to start with it and then change for some better one.

o.0 a dragon =D and a guitar! lol so i have a 2/3 chance of either drawing my own guitar or being able to use my new noobish dragon book that i bought =D nice...
As a topic vote i recon dragons...
It was very hard for me - not knowing what to really look for (being the noob i am and all... but here are my votes:
1> Misiopuchatek - I loved the looking over effect of the train and think the overall image is well atmospheric if thats the right word... Cause it could just be that i'm a teen and an evil train with some dark guys in front just appeals...
2> Max4Ever - liked the motion background effect you used for the background , it really made the train stand out niceley.
3> artecnl - Loved the sun set background and i really like the lighting effects and light rays.
Honerable mentions i recon: Cracker lips and t3d
But i recon you all did phnominally well (and you get to all laugh at me next week which should be amusing...)

My voting:
1. artecnl #61 - I like the warm feeling of the scene too
2. lucashug #51 - simple and nice drawing
3. mim #72 - same here...Basically I like the "technical" drawings more than the "artistic" ones...at least on this toppic :)

Hi everyone. Sorry I didn't get an entry in, started one but I quickly realised it would not fall under "speed painting" with the number of hours (...days) needed, and those hours were needed elsewhere.
Good job to all, looking forward to the next one. They're all good ideas, but my vote is for Dragon.
Votes for the competition this week:
1 : crackerlips #45
2 : cgstripe #12
3 : -t3d- #66
I had a big tie for second, and third was really close between -t3d- and max4ever. I would be proud to hang the artwork of any of you four on my walls.

Hey All,
I've been very busy recently and haven't had the chance to get as involved in this challenge as I would have liked.....with commenting and such. I just want to thank everybody for all your comments, crits and votes and to say that clearly a lot of effort went into the challenge this time and you all did very great works :)

Hmmm...
5 for dragons, 5 for futuristic landscape, 1 for guitar.
How about a dragon in a futuristic landscape?
I heard they just found some strange eggs in an ice flow off of Greenland, and with the state of the oil reserves in the world, dragons may become our new means of transportation... (kidding of course)
Anyone care to break the tie? I noticed a few people voted for their favourite paintings but not the next topic, they can edit their posts if they'd like.
(I guess this can be considered overtime. Who is going to score the winning goal?)
hokey! I think moderators can participate in voting also, speccially in these cases n about challenge topic, therfore no problem :D
warin or waheed please say your intrested topic (just please not opposite votes :D)

or could just have a choice - i dont see why people that wanna do dragon cant do dragons and people that wanna do landscape can do the landscape... then votes can be made taking all into account...
I also think it could be interesting to have one week of completally free style... People just paint what they want. I would have though with people painting exactaly what they want we could see some amazing peices come out of it... (just a thought)

At least I didn't include that the dragon would be playing a guitar. :)
I agree that the mods should just pick the tie breaker (chances are the choice that does not get picked this time will get the top spot next time).

mmmmmm... :D nice idea! I'm interested to paint this for next challenge! then I can start even immediately now! Cause all three topics are in this one!! :D
I imagine a dragon that plays a guitar in a futuristic landscape!!! :D :D :D
