Turbo Smooth or Mesh Smooth if ur using 3ds max
Use the bevel or bevel profile modifier on the text object.

ya, shikav4's method will distort the extruded text.
like jaro said, but more detailed: Create a small curved line next to ur text (not extruded) and then choose "bevel profile" in the modify dropdown...You will probably not get the desired results on ur first try, but it'll show u what it's doing and from there u can make a curved line more to ur liking...

Well the reason why Meshsmooth or Turbosmooth makes it ugly, is because you have only one, or very few polygons for the letter's face, after extruding. Then the meshsmoothing approximates it and it turns ugly.
There are two solutions for this:
1. Go into Edit Poly/Mesh mode, go into edge sub-level, and create edges between the vertexes, so that you segment your single polygon on the face of your letter into several small, preferrably with 3-4 corners. Meshsmoothing/Turbosmoothing now won't make it look like a dead rat. ( Recommended )
- or -
2. Add a Tesselate Modifier, set tension to 0. This will automatically segment your entire extruded text into several more smaller polygons. A Meshsmooth/Turbosmooth now will not look so bad.

I can't find the edge sub level... got a screeny or something?

Sure :)
Next, you need to find the Create button, it's there, look under Edit Geometry tab, and you will need to connect vertices on the face of your text.

Got it now... still I fin it a little hard to get it look good, but I think I can figure that out myself.
