3dsmax is the "most commonly used" 3d app easily.
Now when we refer to the "industry" it's a different story. It isnt a 1 program 1 world type deal. You will find max is used more in the gaming industry(supposably) while maya is more prominent in the movie industry.
Now those are extremely bold generalizations at best. Every piece of commercial 3d software has been used in some form in some way in either the game or movie industry.
What I'm getting at is this, it isnt the software that matters. If you understand how model, light, rig, and texture it dosent matter what you use. In the long run the core of all 3d software is the same.

3DSMAX is probably the most commonly used, simply because it's a very easy program to crack, so it's much more available for amature artists.
In the industry, maya is generally the more heavily used software. It used to be that Max was a little better tailored for games, but Maya has started to take hold there as well (max has started moving into the film world a bit too). We use maya at the game studio I work at.
Really though, most major studio's use almost ever package available since they all have their strength's. Even though we use Maya at our studio, Max is still used for certain applications.
