ok.. waheed.. by the way.. about solving the tablet problem . . i already tried your way of holding the tablet with my left hand and pull it toward me even before you said it .. it kinda work but the bottom of the tablet is not a plastic.. so if i put my foot on the ground i will have a very little electric current in my hands.. so it's not a healthy thing to do on a long period.. and i tried some other things and thanks for crackerlips for that but it didn't work either .. so i gave it back... so this challenge i will do it with pencil then post work on photoshop or painter .... and have fun everyone.... we want it to be a hell of a dragon

Whoa... ok, this tablet wasn't grounded and you were getting shocked?
Time to look into something different, like a Wacom... and I'll look into a Genius one, could make a very affordable taser. Not very portable, but hey, if someone breaks into my appartment... ZAP! Gotcha! Mwahahaha!
(by the way: I looked on Amazon, and the Wacom I have is only $15 more than the same sized Genius one, and I have had 0 problems with it, so it may be worth considering the Graphire4 line)

even though I have a ton of work to do, how could I resist with a topic like this? I've always been interested in the mythology of dragons in which dragons are wise animals that people sometimes go to for advice, as opposed to mindless fire-breathers, although that's cool, too. anyway, here's what I came up with. I might do another one later since I felt like doing a dragon in flight, but for now, enjoy.

sorry, I'm probably asking a very obvious question.. thanks.

Here is my entry... I couldn't turn down the chance to draw a dragon lol.
Anyways, here is my "Undead" Dragon. I just wondered what a dragon would look like as a zombie and this is what I came up with. It's quite a bit different style than my usual cartoons, but hey... I had to try something new. Let me know if you like it. :D

I'm new on this board. I decided I would start taking part in the speedy changelles because my photoshop skills are in need of some speed and control similar to what I can do penciling. This picture took me about 25mins. I didn't know how long I had. So I just pop it out as fast as I could trying out new things.I did a ice dragon since I figured most would go the green or red route. I'll go back and detail it later and post again but here it is ruff and raw.

Great job so far everyone. Lots of different styles :D.
@ nucron - I really like this one, it's simple yet the colours just make it nice to look at, good job.
@ artecnl - Very medieval looking dragon, good work and nice choice of colours, the fire looks very good too. One crit I have is maybe you could have opened the mouth of the dragon a little bit more to make the fire breathing look more fierce.
@ GuyBlueSummers - Very simple, looks like a vector drawing. It's cool that you are experimenting with new styles, that's something I did with this challenge too.
@ VashTheStampede - Great job on yours, I really like the cartoon style.
@ yokunaru - First off, welcome to Threedy! Good start on your dragon. You could probably get away with spending a bit more time on it and refine the drawing more. I like the colours you chose, it's nice to see a blue dragon.
@ glennsueznin - Welcome to Threedy too! Nice camera angle you chose, the picture is very dynamic. Come fixes I would suggest are refine the wings a little bit more, and I would actually match them to the colour of the dragon rather than black. They look separate from the dragon to me. I would also work on the fire, or remove it entirely (the dragon doesn't look to be actually breathing fire based on it's face).
Great work everyone, and keep it up. :)

If I work on it 2 hours every day for 4 days You consider it 4 days or 8 hours?
Haven't really seen the question answered yet, but I would think it's considered 8 hours, and still within the time limit of the competition.
People have lives, jobs, things that need to be done every day, so finding an 8 hour block of time to do something like this is damn near impossible for most. Heck, some days getting 2 hours to yourself is difficult. I think in the spirit of keeping the challenges open to the most number of people (which is what we want), breaking the time up over a couple of days is totally acceptable.
Looking foward to seeing your work Mithiko30, and great job done by all so far.
Working on concept sketches now, so many possabilities!

thx to all, glad u like it.
artecnl: you are right about the fire, that would bring a nice contrast on the dragon itself, but i'm afraid of losing the background by doing so. i will give it a try, anyway :)
visuelle: very good, i like your style of coloring. cool design and nice mood, well done.
vash: well, i was lucky on this one as everything seemed to fit in the first try. it would have been 5 hours if i wasn't trying dozens of different poses and compositions. but u're right, often the design itself takes more than the elaboration of it.
keep it going......i will for sure

Im entering this compo. I have one question. How is it that one gets more than one entry? Isnt that unfair? I just thought a competition you entered one final piece, even though its still "speed painting", not 5 just incase your first 4 werent up to scratch. Anyway great work everyone. Keep it up. :D
DerekSc
27-04-2006, 02:47 AM
Yeah, it says in the rules that you have to declare which one of your multiple entries is your "final entry", but that rule seems to have gone out the window for a while now.
I figure that in the votes you have to put the number of the post, so each post gets it's own total, not just the total number for that person. Haven't been doing the math myself, not sure if they're counting that way, but that's what would make sense.
Is that how it's been counted so far Waheed?

thanks... im trying to develop a believable/realistic impression of the traditional japanese dragons so thats why he has the moustache thing... its actually going to be used for modeling purposes so i have doin it from the one side and symetrical so there is 2 moustache things but they are right behind each other cause of the orthographic view :P...

Damn! The competition is really hotting up around here. Must say I really liked Artecnl's piece. One of the best uses of perspective I've seen here so far during this challenge.
Also I liked Oukruk's piece as well nice use of lighting, simple but a nice feel to it.
For a speed based thing there's alot of quality work being produced in a small amount of time.

hi freekybevis...:). i agree with u, actually its just for having a good number of artworks here, to keep things rollin. we at times dont get many participants, so in this way we recieve quite many entries. and its like that for everyone...:). but now i see we are growing in terms of numbers of people participating. a good sign indeed...:). plus this is all a friendly thing, our main objective here is to learn things and at the same time have a good time, to enjoy.

great great great
oukruk: awesome man, that's some cool style. nice lighting and individual design.
artecnl: again, an impressive work. cause of the gloominess in your pics i always get a feeling of being in a dream. excellent!
xyz: cool idea. i suggest u bring that gold to being a light source, that would give some nice reflections and contrast in that scene.
rusted: hehe, i like it. seems that he's thinking about attacking that town. let 'em go >D
Velenosangue: very interesting design, i like it a lot. personally i would like some slime over and in his mouth, but good job anyway.

I set 2 hours as a limit and i wasn't going to go past it. No refs used except for how to backlight. (first attempt at that) This was my first speed challenge and i have to admit i learned a lot and it was really useful. so thanks to the admins.

Alright I've decided to make this last painting my entry. It was done in Photoshop CS. It took roughly 8 hours. I know that's a long time but hell, I really got into it and would be a shame to let it go un posted. Tried to use the same painting methods as I would if I were to do a traditional painting. Still heaps I wanted to do to it more details etc, but it is a speed challenge after all.

Vash - Yeah don't know if you can tell but I think Gits Rocks. Major Kusanagi is one of the best characters ever. Shame Masamune never seems to get the credit he really deserves... Ah well.
Nervouselk - Hey is that done traditionally... You know paints and stuff? Thats really impressive, how long did it take you to do? I particularly like the eyes. really makes it come alive. Cool. Seem to be able to do alot more detail faster when you make the image come out of a black background.
This weeks challenge is really coming along well. I think that the effort that everyone has put in is really insipiring. Helps everyone improve alot I think.

Didn't think about mirroring an image elements to increase speed. Kinda like making a 3D model, do one side and mirror it. Suppose it's alright to do that when you have a frontal light source like you do there other wise might look wierd. Neat Trick tho.

Hi all... let me just start by saying WOW! cant believe how many people have entered this one, and the quality is through the roof.
Here is my piece entitled - 'Soul Of The Dragon'. The dragon is supposed to be coming out of the warrior in the foreground, and let me take this op to apologize to anyone if the symbol on his back does not say dragon and is something offensive - i got it off an internet site. Not enough time to finish the dragon as i wanted to add more detail but once i finish writing this im off on my hols, so it was post it now or not at all - but i think the overall effect has still worked and i am very happy with it.
Done in Photoshop 7 using my Wacom tablet in around 6 hours including initial pencil sketch of the character. Hope you guys like...

Hello all!
Amazing work on this challenge so far, really going to be hard to vote.
Seems like everyone is having so much fun we could do this one again sometime (or something similar... D&D themed maybe?).
Sorry folks, no guitar in my picture (only thought of that now... strange).
Done in PS:CS with a Wacom Graphire 4 in about 8 hours over a few days.
Title: Butterfingers
Started with a scanned pencil sketch, most of the time was spent on the dragon, about an hour on the thief, and about 20 minutes on the background (mostly doing something, hating it, and doing something else). Still not fantastically happy with the background, but I'm tired, so there it is.
Inspiration for the head is from a T-Rex, another "terrible lizard".
C&C more than welcome. Once again, great job everyone! :)

I'm glad you guys liked it. I was originally just going to leave it at that, but I had this idea in my head a few days ago, and decided I'd sneak one more painting in before the deadline. so here it is -- dragon vs. sea monster. enjoy.
painter 8, 1 hr. 45 min. *edit*: not for voting
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y297/ronaldraven/dragonduel-01.jpg
*edit*: ok, sorry, I keep forgetting that this is a "contest." some of you seem pretty competetive about this. I'm still kind of partial to my first painting (post #4), even though this one was more technically challenging. so, I guess this one is not for voting. again, sorry, I'll try to limit myself to one painting next time to avoid confusion.
it would be cool for those who posted more than one pic to point out which one is their final entry, that'll be fair and make it easier for vote. gz to all, very nice challenge.

Hello all, wow, so many great entries already. I hope mine isnt too late.
I love the idea of dragons, and there are so many different takes on them, as you can see in this challenge. But for mine, I think its a bit usual, lol. Mine is a present day dragon, that lives in the rainforest. And who is to know it cant be real, not all the animals in rainforests are discovered yet. :)
Im not really sure how long it took me to draw this in photoshop (with mouse and tablet) cause I didnt a little on it everynight for a couple days.

VOTING STARTS
hello friends...this was Real Fun...now its time to submit your votes...:). no more paintings to be posted.
pls submit your votes for whichever entry u like, next time if a person submits more than one painting, he/she has to mention the one which is to be considered the Final Entry. pls avoid making the challenge go complicated. to make things simple and easy, we can even set a limit for the number of postings per person, like 2 artworks per person. this will all be decided in the next challenge, that'll be announced in a couple of days.
okay folks...waiting for your votes...:). tough time ideed... :wall:.

Honestly, I didnt think much of the concept in the dragon, rather still... I gotta say that if theres a picture I would concede to, it would be yours. A very excellent use of blurs and focus, displays alot on your digital art skills and experience. (* I'm more of a majestic and wise animal kinda person)
2nd Rico
http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=41320&page=4&pp=15
A pretty nice treatment, I love the use of contrast and the implementation of complimentary colours. Gives an excellent feel on the loneliness and despair in the dragon.
3rd Nervouselk
http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=41320&page=8&pp=15
Very nice toning and style in the art. Detailed on every part. Thought I still think that its the painting of the lady's robes which got my vote.Hahaha
Lol

I think I didn't get my point across in my picture (which is a problem for an artist)... so here's the explanation:
The thief has stolen a bunch of treasure from the dragon's lair. He's trying to creep by the sleeping dragon but accidentally drops a goblet, waking him up. You can guess where it would go from there. I tried to pose the thief to look like someone who's tip-toeing, and the upper body like someone who's heard a loud noise (shoulders up, face cringing).
Looks like I need a lot more work on my layout skills. Comments? Ways I could have improved it to make the situation more clear?
Good luck to all in the guitar challenge!
Karsten

Hi DerekSc,
I think Your Dragon image is working very well.
If Your thinking of tweaking the composition towards the storytelling I can imagine some pieces of the dragons treasure on the left side and an indication of an exit from the dragons nest to the right (stairs e.g.), so that the direction for the Thief is more illustrated.
The pose of the Thief is great and the moment of the awakening dragon is a clever choice.
But I personally could imagine that this picture would be awesome with some more realistic touches.
This ideas maybe interresting for You if You are aiming at a more painter-like approach.
For example by using some reference photos from natural caves to compose and paint an atmospheric enviroment, that would add depth to the composition and give the picture a stronger impact, by showing the Thief much more inside a hostile sourrounding.
Second realistic touch could go to the dragon by giving him a more complex skin-surface and -texture, also inspired by reference photos (from lizards, snakes and crocodile-like beasts). It Would be amazing to see this creature come to live this way.
I hope You find this comment somehow helpfull.
So long
P.S.: Thanks for Your kind comments, everybody.

Thanks Karsten, I appreciate the advice and the time you took to give me feedback. I admit the background is boring, I kind of was running long in time by that time and just wanted it done. I like the idea about the stairs and the treasure on the left, that would really help get the point accross. Thanks again, see you in the challenges.
