_Bouncing Ball_

We are starting off small to get this right. As we see where everyone’s skill level is, the comps will get harder. Now, on to the comp.

The idea,
A ball of some sort (could be a ping pong, racket ball, basket ball, baseball) sitting on a ledge, or not. An invisible force knocks the ball of the ledge to a platform underneath. There is no life to this ball; you just animate what you think this would look like. Can be 2d or 3d, that’s up to you. You don’t have to stick to this, it’s just an idea to get you started. Ball needs to bounce at least 5 times.
_Rules_

- The due date is April 28th, a Friday. Voting will be on that Saturday the 29th.

- Maximum animation length is 10 seconds.

- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 (you can do 640x480 if you want, but why would you).

- You can post W.I.P.s but you are only allowed one complete entry. That link is also final. No redos.

- Websites where you post your finals is up to you.

- Remember, it's about animation, use your time for animation, not to get the best render possible, unless you can afford it.

- Use of plug-ins/modifiers is allowed. But should be mostly key framed (hand animated)

- Try to use Quicktime or Divx if possible. If you can, make a gif.

- Voting will be as follows -

Pick your favorite animation and state why.

First Place-

Second Place-

Third Place-

I understand a bouncing ball isn’t hard and it shouldn’t take 5 days to animate, but we got to start somewhere.

Next week, we kick it up a notch.

Good luck!

hey arneoog, nice effort!

it looks very squigy, maybe a bit to squigy to be able to bounce that much.

also remember the brief, it has to fall off a ledge.

im going to give it ago tomorrow when i have some more time

I read everything but probably forgot it while animating, hehe.

also remember the brief, it has to fall off a ledge.

The brief says, falls of a ledge, or not. So falling from nothing is ok. The ledge just gives the animator somewhere to start.

Here is mine, It has small size, so everyone can download/watch it, It took me like 20-30 mins to animate , doing tests etc. I'm not 100% happy with the results,, but it is not that bad. I didn't use reactor, that would be like cheating right?

xyz i really like yours, very natural i think you got the speed of the bounce quite good.

the tennis ball one, what a good idea! talk about thinking out of the box. something like that never even occured to me!

arneoog very nice, though i think it bounces a little too slow

by the way arneoog, the link works fine, i only had to click on it once

BiG ToE-3DT
25-04-2006, 01:01 AM
arneoog, it is nice, but like others have said it seems to bounce too slow. Another thing you might want to look at is the ending motion. It starts off moving across the screen, at the end it kinda just stops in its tracks. It should keep right on going. Right of the left side of the screen.

arneoog

I agree with it being a bit slow... well, well...

I dont have a clue, I dont use reactor. But if I was you, I would hand animate this. I know I said plugs could be used, but it was mainly for modifiers. If you let a simulation animate everything for you, then it's no fun, plus you wont learn anything.

Ball needs to bounce at least 5 times.

OK, now correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that all of the animations submitted so far have met this criteria. How stringent a rule is this? Considering there aren't many restrictions, I would have thought that it would be easy to meet this target.

Anyway, I'll try and add something to the mix. It would be nice to start on the first challenge and progress as they do.

dereck hi 5 , i like u're litle animatzion ,is it full hand animated ?

Thanks Al3x. Yep, the whole thing is keyed by hand. The main thing was modifying the tangents in the graph editor: two keys for the rotation and forward motion, and modify the tangents so they both slow down exponentially over time. That and breaking the tangents on the vertical axis for the bounce part so they form a "V". I've included a small shot of my graph editor for the group (a picture is worth a thousand words and all that). Default for Maya is that Y is the vertical axis (Z in Max).

I haven't used Reactor (or Maya's Dynamics for that matter) in about a year... tried to do a cape, ended up like a toga. :P Sorry I can't help you on your issue.

(BiG ToE: let me know if you don't want the picture in here and I'll delete it)

say what you think of

It looks nice, but I would use your space a little better (the bottom half of the screen isn't used at all... it would cut down on the file size too).
The bounces need to be more pronounced I think. The ball seems to decelerate when it gets near the ground (the graph should look more like a V and less like a U).
The sudden take off at the end is a little funny too, but otherwise, good job.

Here's my entry done in Maya. LINK !! (http://www.kal3d.co.uk/KAL_ballFor3DT.mov)

I decided to render it and I did use the ledge concept bigtoe stated. I wanted to try that out. So my ball falls from a platform and bounces.

I'm glad the comp is back up, thanks to Martimus and others for pushing.

And yes I will remove the signature.

Keep it up guys!

Before I forget, this movie file is 320 x 240, however it displays @ 480x360. I dont know why. If you 'Save As' and play in quicktime on your hard drive, under show movie info you will notice that the normal size = 320x240.

It just Plays back @ 480x360 the browser. Again dont know why.
Overall the file is only 95k and compressed nicely.

Take care all.

BiG ToE-3DT Two balls bounceing heheh nice. However i feel the first ball is squashing a bit more than it should be IMO. If its a sponge ball then it can squash that much but again it wont bounce up soo much ;)

KL-Maverick I think if u increase the duration & distance between each bounces it will look better.

Ok it was just to have an original animation than a classic bouncing ball... When I've done this I was thinking more at the 'invisible force' that was not necessary a bouncing one for me... Anyway ok, I'll do a more classic one...

Thank you for your comment, Stavrev. For some reason my animation seems to be at half speed when viewed through an internet browser. Is there a set frame rate for animated gifs? A little help would be appreciated.

Also, would it be possible to convert everyone's entries to .gif so they can be viewed here? It wouldn't take much work and would make viewing the entries much easier.

Hey gan3d, I just had some time so I spaced out the bounces in my animation have a look: - Link ! (http://www.kal3d.co.uk/KAL_ballFor3DT2.mov)

I space out my key frames in the dope sheet and the y axis in the graph editor so its a little higher on the first bounce.

I'm still happy with my entry (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=453301&postcount=72) though. **edit** adding link to entry to avoid confusion, I'm just using this as an example.

Thanks for your input!

Hi KL-Maverick, I dont see much difference between 2 of them except for the different camera angle. I think in ur second one the ball is gaining more speed after bounceing which is unlikely to happen in reality, this is just my opinion. But i must say good try.

Hi KL-Maverick, I dont see much difference between 2 of them except for the different camera angle.

Yes the camera is different but there is an obvious difference in the spacing between bounces, its greater than before.

However you maybe right about the speed it picks-up. I didnt adjust my curve enough I suppose. Was nice to animate a boucing ball though, its very important in 3D.

Thanks again.

Nice one martimus, I was wondering when you would post. Good to see you here.

However a small critique. You may wanna adjust/tweak that curve/key where your ball is at the end of the ledge. It has a slight hop upwards just before it fall.

But the rotation around the ledge tip and when it falls and bounces, is nice!

Peace all.

Stavrev: the last half is an empty background. I suggest you trim it down to a reasonable time (will cut your file size down as well, can host it on geocities or something).
I like the deformation, but the bouncing is a pretty erratic.

Calm down stakrev. The guy is offereing you friendly advice

Its true the last half of the animation is pretty pontless, but the files not that big anyway so I dont think it really matters.

And the bouncing IS erratic. But thats fine, if thats how you want it to be, but you shouldnt flame someone for offering their opinion.

Actually DerekSc is right about the bouncing, the whole point of this challenge was to make the best looking bouncing ball that you could, in the time allowed. Another part of the challenge was to get feedback on your work so that you could be better. If you can't handle the crits then your in the wrong place.

DerekSc didn't say anything out of place, I just think you read it wrong or sometrhing.

Now, on to more important things, time is almost up.

So, when we start voting, I think we should do it in here.

Hello ppl,

Finally I had time to do it, and before the deadline ;P

many nice animation I see till now, congratulation all ...

So my entry HERE (http://clips2.vimeo.com/video_files/2006/04/28/vimeo.106042.4deb5d.avi)

see U,

martimus

not bad at all hammering, perhaps the bounce is a little too fast in my opinion, but its nice and simple.

perhaps a variation in air time would make it nicer? ie the higher bounces will obviously spend more time in the air than the smaller ones.

big toe i assume you will post when the challenge is over, how long do we have to vote?

BiG ToE-3DT
29-04-2006, 12:33 AM
Well I wanted to give Jorg40 a chance to enter, but according to the websites clock, the comp will be over in a few more hours, then everyone gets a day to vote.

Although its just saying who is first place, second place, and third. Won't take long at all.

mselejan, well done for producing your first animation!!

It certainly is an interesting concept, but like a few others have posted, there is not much bouncing to be done.

I really like the idea of a goal keeper having to save a goal shot from a cannon, might make a good commercial for nike goalie gloves or something! :D

also, whats with the triangle?

dont worry about it mselejan, but this time try and keep it simple! maybe it would be a good idea to leave out a Biped character, it will allow you to focus more on the animation of the ball.

but hurry, the deadline is close!

ok here is my try (i'm new in this challenge so if i'll brake rulles with this post then i'm sorry)...

here (http://beta-soft.net/ball.avi) (314 kb)

i don't know if i have to write software which i have used so it is cinema 4d it takes 15 minutes and render 5 minutes.

(pls try to view animation more times cause it is little bit fast).

Wow Stavrev, I don't know what to say but yikes! Holy misunderstanding Batman!
I didn't mean trim the view or make it orthographic, I meant trim the time of the animation. In the total 4 seconds of animation, for the last 1.5 seconds we are looking at the empty background. I suggested cutting the time down so it lowers your file size, in case you have bandwidth limitations (as I do).
As for the bouncing, that's your choice of course, do what you like, I was merely offering an opinion. Take it or leave it.
As it stands, I still like the deformations, and it does look nice. :)

Peace everyone, good luck in the voting.

And Big Toe thanks for giving me a chance to join in.
