Low Poly Mini Contest #5
Subject – End Game Boss
ALL WIPS AND CONCEPTS ARE TO BE KEPT ON THIS THREAD.
Guide Lines:
You are to create an end game boss. The type of game and genre is up to you. The character can be a mob boss, a drug dealer, a dirty cop or a nasty bunny rabbit. Whatever you decide to do, however, try thinking conceptually about this one before leaping into the creation process. You want your character to stand out from everyone else. First things first; find your inspiration.
The specs will remain similar to the last competition (6000 total tris) as we have proven that this can be plenty. NO ARGUMENTS. Oh, and notice there are 3 categories for judging.
Above all,
Have Fun!
Now onto the Prizes and Specs...
Prizes!!!
The winner of the contest will receive The Threedy Excellence Award + Any 1 of the Total Textures CDs of their choice!
Hooray for Prizes!
Judging: 3 categories of judging will apply. 10 points possible for each:
Concept -How innovative your concept is.
Model – How well the geometry is structured.
Texture – How well the texture space has been used, and how well the texture is painted/applied.
DUE DATE: May 26th:
One month from today!
Concept:
It is advised to work conceptually on paper before putting this project into motion, but I will not insist upon it in order to submit your work. When you do post your concepts though, try to spend a bit of time on them beforehand, rather than just posting whatever doodle comes to mind. I'm going to try and advertise this comp and attract some more folks to join in, so a tidy thread will be helpful when they drop in. More participants’ means better prizes in the future, I hope. Another thing, since everyone can’t draw, I will ok the allowance of outside concepts. But you must give credit where credit is due. So if you come across a picture of a character that you just have to model, do so. But don’t try to take credit for the image.
Poly limit:
6000 Tris Total. You can have as many weapons as you want, as long as you don't exceed the 6000 Tri Limit.
Textures:
1-1024 x 1024 texture, you can chop that up into whatever you want (4 512’s, 8 256, whatever) Normals, bumps, spec and all the others will not count towards your texture space. So go crazy.
Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.
Rigging:
All characters must be rigged/posed.
Final Pictures:
You must provide a screen grab of your wire frame with your poly count, with the actual model and all its parts selected. Please don’t Photoshop your Poly counter with a bogus count. Make sure you post all work in progress, including final poly counts and wire frames in the work in progress thread.
Also, provide at least 2 rendered pictures of your model. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better.
Good luck everyone!
BiG ToE.

I'm in for this one, it should be pretty intresting.
Toe is it 5000 tri's or 6000? You have both listed...

I'm going sit this one out (again), but good luck to all of the contestants! The good thing about having such a broad topic is that you can really let your imagination run wild. I hope to see lots of creative concepts!
It seems odd to grade entrants on the innovation of their concept while allowing them to swipe it from another source. I'd imagine that contestants who borrow ideas from other artists will receive lower concept scores than their fellows who actually do the work for themselves. :dunno:

I'm in as well. Just to clarify, the total 1024x1024 texture space can just be used for the colour maps? Spec, bump, etc... are excluded from that space?
On the same topic, are there any texture elements that are restricted, considering the video game subject matter? I know a lot of game engines don't do reflections, common ones are colour, bump/normal, and spec.

nice, I love this theme. I'll join for sure. Had loads of fun last time, and learned so much. Anyway, to get this right. 1024x1024 total for the diffuse, but unlimited amount of pixels for bump, spec, normal, etc etc? Makes me drool just to think of it.

Personally, I think your polycount and texture limit can be higher. Take a look at what the Unreal 3 engine is using. I pulled up what the unreal 3 engine is using and this is what they use. I have seen higher polycounts and texture limits for game bosses.
http://www.unrealtechnology.com/html/technology/ue30.shtml
Characters
For every major character and static mesh asset, we build two versions of the geometry: a renderable mesh with unique UV coordinates, and a detail mesh containing only geometry. We run the two meshes through the Unreal Engine 3 preprocessing tool and generate a high-res normal map for the renderable mesh, based on analyzing all of the geometry in the detail mesh.
Renderable Mesh: We build renderable meshes with 3,000-12,000 triangles, based on the expectation of 5-20 visible characters in a game scene.
Detail Mesh: We build 1-8 million triangle detail meshes for typical characters. This is quite sufficient for generating 1-2 normal maps of resolution 2048x2048 per character.
Bones: The highest LOD version of our characters typically have 100-200 bones, and include articulated faces, hands, and fingers.
Normal Maps & Texture maps
We are authoring most character and world normal maps and texture maps at 2048x2048 resolution. We feel this is a good target for games running on mid-range PC's in the 2006 timeframe. Next-generation consoles may require reducing texture resolution by 2X, and low-end PC's up to 4X, depending on texture count and scene complexity.

Please let me know what ya think. I mean, Ill do the contest regardless, but I tell you this, I will make a higher res version in ZBrush and crank up the textures for my highres model, and then drop the texture resolution to meet the criteria of this contest whatever the limits may be. Cheers. :)

What if the boss if for a game that's not an FPS? What if it's in an MMO and there are 100 characters on screen trying to kill it? I think the limitations are acceptable

True Kaej. That would be exceptable in that case. But um, me myself, personally would like to see a lil higher. like 10,000 triangles and 1 2048x2048 texture space. I want to build something that is going to get me a job and look good on a demo reel. I think we should crank this one up. There are many genres out there that use higher polycounts. Next Gen Fighting games for example use higher polycounts. I have seen Thirdperson shooter and action adventure games with higher polycounts. I am not complaining, I am just stating facts.

@Agent-X, nobody distracts you from creating a character with such limitations. But the contests limits are set as BigToe already said. :)
I think the limits are nice and realistic for common and next gen games. Like UT2007 won't have characters at 15.000 tris. FarCry has characters with 1500 tris and they look great. (correct me if am wrong) Well thats it, won't leave the topic.
Edit: Hope many of the 39 watching users will join this one. :)
I want to build something that is going to get me a job and look good on a demo reel.
So what a problem? You may add the rest 4K tris to your model (actually, you will do that during normal map create) and use result in your portfolio. And the less problem to do the same thing with texture. ;)

The 1024 map is the color map. You can make as many other maps as you want. I wont count them towards the color map size.

For this one we are doing 6000 tris, I'm kinda averaging what I've seen from other companies. Keep in mind, you can make normal maps, so do whatever you want in z brush. You do know if you make a normal map at 2048, then resize it to 1024, you will loose some detail.

And um im writing a description of my end game boss but its not ready yet and it wont be finished today. Exams are around the corner, and then 12 years of school is over hurray! :halo:

I had a great time on the last challenge. And i learned a lot of stuff too. So i think im gonna enter this one as well.

Hmmm, Would be great if we could all get our own WIP threads where we could post our stuff and people could comment on etc. It would be great and also less 'confusing' to browse :)

We tried that on the first low-poly challege we had and since it didnt turn out as effective as people though it would be everything is kept on one giant thread. :smug:

Hey Toe, are we allowed to team up for this one? I know that CG Chat allows two partners to work together on a single entry. I'd love to take part in this contest, but I just don't have the time to do everything. I might be able to join in if I had another person to share the load.
And just to clarify, the additional maps (bump, spec, etc.) can be no larger than your diffuse, correct? You can't render out a 2048 normal map or anything.

I dont see why you can't team up. I guess it's ok. Although if your team wins, you still only get the one prize.
Yes, your other maps have to be the same size as the color. "1024" for everybody.

Here's a concept of mine to start. Just thought of it today and will do for now as a base. I intend to addd more to him...Armor, weapons, color scheme, etc...He looks more like a minion than a final boss...But I will update you guys again soon. When people team up, it's just two people, one does the modeling, rigging and the other does the textures.
So it's fair.

In the final render, is it alright to include a very simple human "player" character to show off the scale of the Boss? My Boss will be very large compared to a human so I'm thinking the best way to show scale is with a reference.
The player model will not distract from the Boss model and will blend in with the environment. If it is stated in the final render post that "small human is for scale reference only", is this acceptable? Will I need to include the player's poly count to the total?

Well, I would ask to you the same... But already asked and aswered...
But I have another Question to ask to you. :dunno: Can I re do a Old Boss from a old platform Game? Such as Last Boss from "Star Ocean" of SNES or Robotnik (Eggman) from Sonic of Mega Drive? Or other one Boss from other one Old Platform?
Or need be a NEW and Creative Boss Game?

High-Life: Well, part of the judging is for concept (see the first post), so you may get low points in that catagory if you do something already established. If you came up with a brand new original boss that would fit in the Sonic universe, that would get you a few more points, imho.

This will be fantastic fun, although unfortunately I have A-levels coming up in about a month's time, but I'll still see if I can come up with anything in that time while revising.
Revliss: that's a really cool sketch there, but damn, I was thinking along the lines of a young creepy child who is more dangerous than she looks at first glance. I didn't have fish hooks though. Maybe I'll take a different approach.
Everyone else: Fantastic concepts coming up all round. It'll be great to see what these end up looking like in 3D.
I guess I should get a move on with my concept, as I should leave more time for texturing than I did last time, especially with exams coming up this time...

Like DerekSc said, you can but you will loose points in the concept area of the voting. Now if you do a really good job, then who knows what will happen.

Here is my concept. Draw them on lessons. The idea is that this evil guy is the only one survived titan from the old days of ancient greece, his body has transformed through ages as well as his powers. Now his main might is not anymore physical strenght but it's more mental smth like magical powers.

Thank you FrznChaos and Jenova. I appreciate the compliments and recognition. I look foward to seeing all the beautiful art work everyone is creating. I will deffinately be going nuts on the highres version of this dragon. This will be alot of fun. I cant waith to kick out a 10million polygon dragon or whatever it will be in the end. I am excited about this one. This will deffinately be a portfolio piece for me. I will do as much as I can do with the polgyon limitations I have for the low res. but I am sure I will be fine and Ill make every polygon count. So off to the races with the modeling I go. Good luck fellow 3dtotal artists. Peace!

Not sure if I will have time to work on this as I have a business trip to Florida coming up which will take me out of action for a couple of weeks... Still, I'll post a few bits and pieces and give it a go!
First thought: Twisted circus game. You get to the end and the main protagonist takes a chemically enhanced pie to the face, leading to him mutating into a freaky muscular clown from hell(tm). Freaky clowns. Yes.

Threedy staff please count me in on this one.. I need much practice.. And I love the idea.. :)
well here's some preliminary concepts i've come up with today.. I'm leaning towards the tribal guy (though he looks so much like Kratos *from GOW* knock off..)
I will be posting more concepts soon..
Introduction
Khentamentiu. Pretty darn pissed off Jackal God, from loosing His seat in the Pantheon, to the newcomer, Anubis. He walked the lands of Mortals for thousands of years, until finally welcomed by a little girl, as her pet? The black jackal studied the girl and the mortal men around Him. Until one day he left to reclaim His throne from the foolish Anubis.
The girl? She followed, trying to find her lost 'puppy'. Travelling through the dangerous lands, she finally found her way to the Pantheon and to the plane of Khentamentiu, where she faces off her pet, her most important friend... trying to kill her, to utterly destroy her body and her soul. What else can she do, but fight back?
Portfolio
Khentamentiu, the Jackal God. Before a gatekeeper of Necropolis. Now an insane God of Death and Souls. Bound to destroy all mortals, dead or alive. Bound to destroy Anubis, to whom He lost His throne to. Khentamentiu is like any other God in the Pantheon, except He's mad as hell and angry as the earthquakes!
Weapons?
What does a God need weapons for? To enjoy killing of course!
Khentamentiu stands atop of dozen of Ankhs, those Ankhs represent soon dying mortals. So they won't last for long. The Ankhs are the battleground and also Khentamentiu's weapon. For he can kill those mortals before their time has come! Now loosing footstep? Its one way ticket to oblivion! Destroyed Ankh will soon be replaced by new mortal nearing their death... but how long will it hold you?
Khentamentiu can bite. Of course. Every jackal can... but not every jackal will kill you with one bite and devour your soul along your body! Beware, cause you will loose more than just your life to Khentamentiu's jaws.
The Damned Scarf around Khentamentiu's neck is probably the most dangerous of all objects and items in the known world and Pantheon. He can control it as if it was two snakes of His own body. One sweep with the Scarf will destroy Ankhs and you alike, along with the soul.
Fighting?
And how can you possibly kill a God? Now that's easier than it sounds. Just beat it up. No big deal eh? What if your only weapon is a flute and ability to summon magic with it? Now, all you really have to know:
A) Don't let Khentamentiu bite you
B) Don't let the Damned Scarf slice you
C) Don't fall
D) Don't stand still
Easy, yeah. Except that it takes you 1 second to prepeare to summon magic and your dexterity to play the correct song, faster than the God is killing you.
Anything else?
You might also wish to try to find His weak spot... Heart? Soul? But will your weapons harm the weak spot... or is it your music that will? Find out.
Enough chatter now
And picture. Its just a rough sketch I made at 3 am, so nothing great :)

Here is a rough sketch i did for this contest, dont think im going to put the wings on though, save me some texture space. not sure about the colors yet either, probably gonna go for something darker.
Here is my concept, created from a fallen soldier, programed to serve and protect the creator, programed to kill all harm towards the creator. The creator is now gone, the concept is free of protecting and is on a killing spree with no end in sight.
standing taller then 12 feet weighing in at over 7000 pounds, wielding a gun capable of blowing a hole through a tank. able to withstand the strongest of armour peircing bullets to great explosives.
and ah how do i post a picture instead of a link to the picture??

Hi defaultalias. I would try coloring your concept in photoshop by having your scanned drawing layer on top and set it Multiply. Then underneath the scanned drawing layer you can add more layers which have your color on it. After you finished coloring it, its always nice to go back into your color layers and use the dodge and burn tool to create highlights and shadows. You can also go back into your scanned drawing layer and clean up some of your rough lines by erasing to make it more clean. I hope this helps.

Hi Pogimonz. Nice character concept. The model is looking pretty cool so far. There are some areas that are not in all quads but Its all based on how it deforms in the end is whats most important. So its ok I guess to have triangles. But typically when I model I try to keep in quads until the very end where I triangulate everything. Like when I am modeling something that has a sphere or cylinder then of course you have triangles on the top and bottom poles of those two objects. Well, I am sure you know this stuff. I have checked out your portfolio. You have some nice stuff. Keep up the good work. I look foward to seeing more posts by you in the future

i had to remake the body and most of the head. it didn't look heavy enough. i will also try to at least include a concept for the drop ship (explained in the description), if not include it in the actual model
now, about the boss
name: Magdoll 2B-14
Magdoll is the second line, second division of biomechanical war machines. this particular unit, number 14, is commonly used in air drop missions to secure land behind enemy lines and establish new, self sufficient bases. it's the boss character because the hero's final mision is to stop the formations of one of these "Boomtown" bases that is located in a very strategic spot.

Well heres my pretty rough concept, gonna do some nicer ones but this is the theme I wanna give this guy. He comes from a csi-fantasy universe and his main weapon is a double bladed staff that carries an powerful electric force.

Question about the rules: the final image, does scenery and props (not weapons) count towards the poly count? what about a drop ship?
TheWinterLord
28-04-2006, 04:42 PM
defaultalias no they do not count in the poly count.
weapons do and i guess if the boss is like carrying something that counts.
but anyhting in the environment does not count, go crazy if you like! :)

Question about the rules: the final image, does scenery and props (not weapons) count towards the poly count? what about a drop ship?
Environments are fine for the final image, they wont count towards the poly's. But if your drop ship is a part of the model, meaning, does your model need it to function, or to get its point across, then the drop ship will count towards the poly count.

3.shoulder
4.hips
TheWinterLord
28-04-2006, 10:30 PM
oh yeah thanx stavrev i will do that.
Here is the text that goes with my boss:
Rayin, Fuyin and Nerwin. You have been fighting these bosses earlier in the game but never all of them at the same time! Fuyin and Rayin are twins, both equally evil, creating mayhem wherever they go leading small armies of chaos. Nerwin is the wiser and also the most evil leader. He uses magic to take care of his foes meanwhile the brothers have annoying ranged weapons. In the end, it would seem that they wouldn’t be able to handle close combat, if they didnt have the power to summon creatures fighting against you and if they didn’t have the super strong "Oxe" creature who is strong and will pick up anything it can to throw and whack whoever gets in its way. Working together, this team creates the strongest boss by far in the game.

Hey Winter Lord, keep in mind if the people dangling from that thing on your main characters back are not going to move then just model them in the position you want, then you wont need to worry about the extra segments for the knees, elbows. Save them tris for the main character.

Okay – here’s an early concept sketch for what I hope to be my entry: “General Steam!”
Imagine a sort of “Steam Punk” meets “Street Fighter” sort of game. Imagine a city held in the iron grip of its power company, ruled by its augmented and power-mad dictator. (Think “general electric” gone utterly mad…) Big, steam-powered arm and leg (probably whole left side, save head) – can block with armored parts or strike with devastating force. Not real quick, though. . . . and did I mention he’s crazy?
Still need to work on the concept a bit, get the leg figured out and such – but I wanted to post this. Get myself movin’ on it and see whatcha ‘all think.

Hi guys Here is some of my work in progress, I am still fleshing out the model. I will continue to show progress. Once i get everything fleshed out I will optimize and tweak the model to the fullest. Nice work everybody. I am enjoying looking at everyones beautiful work. I can't wait to finish this low poly and uv mapping stuff, so I can finally do my thing in ZBrush and unleash the beast with in. Hehe. Ill catch you guys later today with more updates. Keep the good art work coming. Take care. Peace.

Oh and yes my character will kinda have 4 arms, but 2 of them are used as wings to fly, and ofcourse I have to model the legs still. I hope to have the model completed soon. I am looking at it and my time. I am now probably going to say Monday at the latest for the modeling. I am not going to rush this. I am going to go for a quality model. Catch ya guys later.

Agent X, it looks good so far, but comparing to the concept, I would say the neck isn't long enough and you might want to strech the wing flaps incase you ever want to animate that beast flying.
But then its still work in progress so you most likely will, or did it already.
Hi, this is my first time posting on this website, thought I might as well have a bash at this contest.
Here's my idea:
That is not my finished design however. I will be adding robotic parts to it, and maybe some kind of spear. It will also have arms-not featured on the sketch-(where the hole is).

RSG, you make that tail longer and you got yourself a solid design.

RSG nice dragon there. This is getting very interesting to see everyones ideas and stuff as this contest continues.
Pogimonz- Which 3d package are you using? I believe if you are using 3d studio max you can convert to editable poly and this is much easier to keep in quads using editable poly. I believe editable mesh always keeps your model in triangles. Personally I am more familiar with Maya. I mean in the end the model will have to be triangulated anyways. But its best to keep in quads because if you plan to take your model to zbrush or just smooth your model out in max and do your highres its best to have your model in quads for the most part. If you have a triangulated model and you smooth the model by adding more geometry then the models topology is not as clean. Feel free to contact me anytime if ya have any questions

Alonzo, if your question is "Can I do this character for more than one comp", then I would have to say the answer is yes and no.
Yes, if both comps started at the same time, and have the same requirements. And if you give a link to the other site, for everyone else to join in on the fun.
No, if it doesn't match up with the stuff I said for yes.

Hey guys!
I've been cheking out this comp since the first post a week ago...
I haven't send any designs yet because I don't have a scanner...nut I have a concept in mind...
So since I don't have an image of my drawings on the computer I can only post some snapshots of the actual model...wich I'll be doing later
I use 3ds max 8.0, does anyone knows how to display the little polycount window so I can show u guys how many tris I've got so far?
thanks!
ps: I'm getting more and more amazed by the quality of everyone's works

in max all the way to the right of the little tools menu, you will see a hammer looking icon on a the tab. Click that, then click the little button above all the larger buttons. A window will pop up. Click on poly counter, and make sure its set to tris.

Hi all!
Well... I asked if Can I remake a existent End Game Boss. Because I´m not so Good for creating New Chars... Initially I choose a Raid Boss from the game "Lineage 2" called Zaken Pirate. But... The Theme is "END" Boss Game... And I think hehehe... a MMORPG don´t Have "END" Bosses ^^'
So later a choose a End Boss Game from a Game that I like a lot. Because that game made me want learn CG... So I choosed Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7. Sorry guys for a Not creative Characters :(
This is My initial WIP image. I will try make some changes in Sephiroth Clothes and Hair... So Let´s see now how I will do that 8)

Well, i'm happy with the proportions of m model. all thats left is to add the final small details and of course texture, rig, and pose. i'll get the weapon made too, as well as the dropship(the dropship wont be in the final model tough). still haven't decided on a collor scheme. i'm almost about to make it olive drab and be done with it.

30-04-2006, 11:21 AM
This is my absolute first rig. i remembered i had thase unreal VTMs and learned a bit, but still, this is my first setup and if anyone has any comments on how to make it better, they're more than welcom. i still need to finish the small details and weapon, just made the rig so i don't have to do it later.

I'm finished with the model, including the sword. i will need to edit the rig again to fit the model since i completely remade the legs(again). now, UV mapping.
Yay...
Here is what im doing. I already started modeling it too. However, i was doing it free handed, not using image plane ref. After a few hours i realized it was kinda hard to do it that way. So im just gonna draw them sometime this night.

Now I already have mapped the UVW of My Char. In this Time I modeled the Sword Masamune 68 too. Now The Next Step I will start make the Textures... I will Use 4 Textures of 512x512 (total amount 1024x1024 texture). Normally I use in My chars 1 Texture 512x512 for Full Body, 1 Texture 256x256 for Head, and 1 Texture 256x128 for Weapons. But since my texture Limit Resolution in that contest is 1024x1024. So Why not use that Limit? Using 4 Textures of 512x512 I will have more Resolution on Details. Right?

In this Time I did make the Masamune 68 Textures... In this Image I´m using a Difuse Map with Specular MAP, Specular Color Map and Alpha Map. I will do some adjust in the Sword Handler Texture and Specular MAP and Specular Color MAP. I´m Using for that sword 1 of 4 512x512 textures that I will using for My char. I don´t Know if I will use a Normal Map for Sword, because I think if this Model was used in a game... No one will notice in the Sword Details... Sword will not be so close of the camera as Weapons from Doom 3... And in Action Scene, Are you paying attention in the Weapon Details of the Boss, Or will try Kill the boss?
In the Fullbody Texture probaly I will use Normal Map... Let´s See What I will do... Because I don´t Know what do in this momment... hehehe!

Hi people, I'm back with a new update on my character wip. Still in DP stage, I've not moved on to 3d yet. It's pretty much finished, except for some very obvious things and a weapon in his left hand (compare to my last wip on page 11). what is the best order for a low poly project?? modelling->texturing->rigging??
Yes. Why, because if you rigg it up now, and it takes alittle longer than you where redy for, you could run out of time for texturing, causing you to rush through the texture proccess. In the end you would have a nice rigg, but an your textures won't match up.

By the way Dark Maggot, does Shaman has anything to do with the anime Shaman King?
BiG ToE-3DT
02-05-2006, 03:15 AM
dark_maggot, not sure but you might want to try going into vert mode in the mesh of the body, then select all the verts in the waste area that you want, then break it so that its cut into two at the waist. Then go down in the menu till you see the attach button, click that then click on the skirt, it will be apart of the bodies mesh. Now go though vert by vert on the waist and the verts in the skirt that match up and collapse them together. That should work, if not, just leave it the way it is.
