View Full Version : Speed Animation Comp "5" Bowling
01-05-2006, 05:44 AM
We will continue with the small stuff to this right. As we see where everyoneís skill level is, the comps will get harder. Now, on to the comp.
A bowling ball and some pins. The ball rolls down the alley, hits the pins and something happens. Show me. There is no life to this ball; you just animate what you think this would look like. Can be 2d or 3d, thatís up to you. You donít have to stick to this, itís just an idea to get you started.
- The due date is May 5th, a Friday. Voting will be on that Saturday.
- Maximum animation length is 10 seconds, unless you just have to have more.
- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 (you can do 640x480 if you want, but why would you).
- You can post W.I.P.s but you are only allowed one complete entry. That link is also final. No redos.
- Websites where you post your finals is up to you.
- Remember, it's about animation, use your time for animation, not to get the best render possible, unless you can afford it.
- Use of plug-ins/modifiers is NOT allowed. But should be mostly key framed (hand animated)
- Try to use
Quicktime or Divx if possible. If you can, make a gif.
- Voting will be as follows -
Pick your favorite animation.
Next week, we kick it up a notch.

Nice one BiG ToE-3DT, that's challenging.
01-05-2006, 07:40 PM
My program works, ^^
I will be joining in!
Anyone need help? Contact me.
"you are only allowed one complete entry"
That means, only one submission right? I must be sure, probably a very stupid question, but I'm the person who want to be sure before acting.
good!,, this one is harder,, A'm in..!
01-05-2006, 07:58 PM
you can do more than one for fun, but you have to choose which one you want for when its voting time. My fault, I didn't say that in the brief.
So do as many as you like, then pick the one you like the best, then make sure I know which one that is.

Everything must be keyframed?
I can't use Active and Passive body options?

Everything must be keyframed?
I can't use Active and Passive body options?
Try the keyframe first. But, these comps are for learning and practice. So, using a plug in of some sort wont help you in the long run.
01-05-2006, 10:35 PM
Change in rules, no plugs of any sort. We want to see what you can animate, not how good your plug in works.
01-05-2006, 10:37 PM
Another thing, when you load up your final link, post up a screen grab showing your keyframes. I know this sounds mean, like I don't trust you, but I don't. hahaha.

Hey guys i might have to miss this one,
I have 2 final hand ins on friday and my hard drive has been corrupted
I am now very angry/sad/scuicidal/delerious/depressed
02-05-2006, 01:38 AM
I'm almost done with my entry.
02-05-2006, 02:50 AM
Alright, I wanted to make an entry for this, but, I wanted to work on my two other projects the rest of the week. So I put this together in about an hour and a half, and I think its pretty good.
02-05-2006, 03:26 AM
10 second files have no need to be over 1mb,
02-05-2006, 03:31 AM
Sorry but Sorenson Video 3 made it look very bad, although the file size was small. MPEG came out almost as good as the original quality and it wasn't too big.
02-05-2006, 04:19 AM
sorry, I was being a bit grumpy. I clicked on it, saw i had to wait and got annoyed. Im in a bit of a mood, sorry if it came out offensive.
Anyway i watched it now, one crit, the ball seems to bizarrely change direction half way down the gulley.
02-05-2006, 04:40 AM
Wait, do you mean like the curve ball? or after its hit the pins? Sorry, I'm a Visual Effects guy, not much of a bowler.
02-05-2006, 05:41 AM
i guess you could call it a curve ball but there doesnt seem to be much curve, the change in trajectory is very sharp
02-05-2006, 06:42 AM
Yeah, it does seem to take an abrupt turn, like it hits an invisible wall or something. Smooth out that keyframe (make it non-linear) and it'll be fine, the rest looks pretty good. Good job!
(btw: what software did you use?)
02-05-2006, 05:04 PM
I use Carrara 5 pro. I'll smooth it out today.
Hy guis I'm in for this week 2
I'll make an animatzion right away
03-05-2006, 01:52 AM
I smoothed it. It looks a lot better now. It curves a lot more, and it picks up speed after the curve.

thats nice zomby, now all I need to see is a screen grab wit the keyframes, and your modifier list open. Make sure you have the pins selected when you do this.
Right now, your screen grab looks like your trying to hide something. We can't see everything, just what you want us to see.
03-05-2006, 11:26 PM
sorry dawgass, i did know that photobucket made my screenshot smaller than my roomates weeny. ok, so i just tried to take that screen shot but everytime i click the modifier panel button for the pins i get an error message that says "an error has occurred and the application will now close. do you want to attempt to save a copy of the current scene?" how can i fix this?
04-05-2006, 03:03 AM
so I cant make the bowling ball a character right?
04-05-2006, 03:16 AM
zomby: if your in maxm open a new file then merge everything from the old file. Then save.
capitan_popo: no, you can not.
04-05-2006, 03:30 AM
ok will have mine up by tomorrow
why a ramp? something is fishy ;P ........
I'm working on mine,, this is pretty difficult...
well, here it is, it has a lot of problems, I did it in two hours + - cause i have to sleep now,,
NOTE: I'm using firefox and it gets stuck when trying to play the movie, better download it just in case.
04-05-2006, 10:32 PM
I found a site with small clips of bowling balls hitting pins. You can't save them, but it's a great visual reference. Check it out:
Now lets see some pins fly!
Good luck, hope to see some more entries (mine will be here this afternoon).
hmm, i did mine w/o refference,, probably that's why it looks weird,, thanks for sharing dereksc.
05-05-2006, 07:06 AM
im redoing mine, ill let u guys decide witch to enter. are u guys down???
05-05-2006, 07:49 AM
Zomby you still need to do a screen grab, with the keyframes showing for the first one before anyone can vote for it.
05-05-2006, 01:20 PM
Ok, here's my one and only final submission for the bowling challenge.
All keyed by hand, watched one of the movies at the site listed above over and over and over. Done in Maya 7 in about 2 hours, plus a little extra for the modeling and texturing. The first pin I keyed for the rotation and translation, but then realised it would be easier to group each pin and break the rotations down (started getting gimbal lock and it was doing funny things).
That's why most of the pins have a group for the translation, and a pin for the rotation in the graph editor. I used the group to set the initial direction of the pin as well, if that changed (ie: it hit something mid flight), you'll see keys for the rotation on the group as well. Two of the pins didn't move, which is why there are 9 graphs and not 11 (ball included).
The movie can be found here:
And the graph editor shots can be found here:
(had to shrink it down by half to keep it managable, let me know if you can't read it and want the full size version)
C&C more than welcome. Good luck everyone! :)

Good job DerekSc, nice to see last weeks champ show up and deliver.
Now, time is running out and it looks like this challenge was too challenging. Prove me wrong guys. So far we got two entry's. Voting will be oh so "hard".
05-05-2006, 11:56 PM
Wanted to have a new set of pins come down, but ran out of time.
06-05-2006, 12:02 AM
Good job Freek, like the sweeper at the end, nice touch. :)
06-05-2006, 12:06 AM
hey guys sorry I havnt bee around to offer an entry, theres a couple nice ones tho, although there does seem to be less people about this week.
In case your interested, this is whats been taking up all my time time consuming (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?p=456172#post456172)
Ill be back in the next couple weeks, when Ive had a chance to breath after uni finshes at the end of May
06-05-2006, 12:27 AM
Thanks :) Mine's a little stiff compared to the other entries though. Should work on that for future entries. Make it look a bitt more dynamic and loose.
06-05-2006, 03:03 AM
When is the deadline, this week has been like the other week, full of exams and [Insert Nasty ****]...
Can I please make a submission tomorrow? In Norwegian time I have 40 minutes left to complete the animation. And the sadest is that I am going from a friend right now, and when I get home I probably have 10-5 minutes left...
06-05-2006, 03:17 AM
you can post one up, but I can't change the rules. Sorry but if its not up by 12:00 pm my time it doesn't count.
06-05-2006, 07:03 AM
06-05-2006, 07:10 AM
OK, look at them then vote.
06-05-2006, 11:35 AM
