View Full Version : Speed Animation Comp "7" (Car Chase/Race)
BiG ToE-3DT

_Car Chase/Race_
It’s time to kick it up a notch. Now, on to the comp.
The idea,
A car chase/race. At least two objects moving around an area. If it’s a chase, one must be following the other in some way. If they are racing, someone has to win. Special effects are allowed but are not necessary. This is about the animation. You don’t have to stick to this, it’s just an idea to get you started. On completion, you must submit some sort of render or screen grab that links to your final movie. This is so I can find all final submissions at the end
_Rules_
- The due date is June 2nd, (two weeks from now) a Friday. Voting will be on that Saturday.
- Maximum animation length is 60 seconds, unless you just have to have more.
- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 (you can do 640x480 if you want, but why would you).
- You can post W.I.P.s but you are only allowed one complete entry. That link is also final. No redos.
- Websites where you post your finals is up to you.
- Remember, it's about animation, use your time for animation, not to get the best render possible, unless you can afford it.
- Use of plug-ins not allowed. Must be key framed (hand animated)
- Try to use Quicktime or Divx if possible. If you can, make a gif.
- Voting will be as follows -
Pick your favorite animation.
First Place- (0-5 points)
Second Place- (0-5 points)
Third Place- (0-5 points)
Good luck!

Thanks DerekSc, nice concept. I did say this would a chance to animate some different objects.
Good idea + 60 is good time.
I'll start on it leter this week, when I free, still texturing my current project.

Hey people justa small question. Can we use reactor or particles. Not for the whole animation just for blasting things up and some small rigidbody simulations.
KL-Maverick
22-05-2006, 11:14 PM
shikav4, in regards to your question, BiG ToE-3DT did say the following.
... Special effects are allowed but are not necessary. This is about the animation...
So of course you can use particles.
BiG ToE-3DT
22-05-2006, 11:28 PM
there you go.
shikav4
22-05-2006, 11:53 PM
What about reactor? Cause thats not hand animation.
BiG ToE-3DT
23-05-2006, 01:21 AM
thats fine too. unless its for something that you could have done by hand. like dents, or bouncing one car off of another.

hmmmmm this weeks challenge sounds cool, but i think it's a bit over my head so I dont think I'll be entering this week, but I will be watching so I expect some great animations!!!!
KL-Maverick
23-05-2006, 03:53 AM
shikav4 As long as you hand animate the car chase/race and dont use plug-ins for that part, you are fine.
You may use plug-ins for anything else. Its right there in the guidelines. Don't make the comp seem more convoluted than it needs to be.
Curtis Martin
23-05-2006, 03:54 AM
Does the object have to have wheels? Does it have to be on the ground?
BiG ToE-3DT
23-05-2006, 03:58 AM
Curtis Martin: nope, I just use the brief to get you started. The chase/race could be kites, bikes, planes. That's up to you.

Dude thats great as always. The music adds to the excitment. And the camera movement is awesome.
Now would you please tell me how you made the texture for the dome and where did you get the music from?
And trust me I wont copy your work. Its just that I want to know it for future projects.
I'll be posting my work soon.
Freespace-3DT
27-05-2006, 04:15 AM
Hey shikav, I'm glad you like it. The music is Stratus - You Must Follow, from the NFS Most Wanted soundtrack, though I've remixed it so it fits the visual side of the film. If by the dome you mean the sky, it's a panoramic cloud texture that I got from the internet, and I've edited it in Photoshop to make it look better.
I can start collection bribs to give freespace a temp ban to the forum till the contest is over :P
Really tho freespace we all love to hate you :) Great stuff!

great work freespace, I like it, your comp must be fast rendering, , the ilumination and materials are great. the only thing is,, the cameras, sometimes the transitions are too fast and the motion doesnt flow.. maybe too fast, I dont know,, great work anyway,, those were just details, cant wait to see it finished.

I'd be totally in to join this comp but I could only start working on it tomorrow... so I won't join... I hope the next comp is as exciting as this one... i'd like to rival Freespace... how about NOT doing character animation for the next comp too? Maybe something that allows for a bit of creativity with the camera movements... it's part of animation too.
shikav4
28-05-2006, 11:48 PM
I never wish to rival Frespace. He is a very good animator. As he has entered, its gonna get hard for me to win.

by "rival" I meant a friendly rivalry... nothing more...
shikav4
29-05-2006, 12:51 AM

I'm not scared. I'll bring a letter opener to this gun fight, before I back down.
Is there a way I can do the animation of a wheel as a loop, so I dont have to rotate it like one million times? I know there is a way, but dont know how to do it. help will be apreciated. :D
and shikav4, come on, if you think yours wont be better than freespace's, you can still get the second place. ;P

Freespace, your still in school. Damn man.
XYZ: in max under the dope sheet there is a selection option thatallows you to repeat an action for as man times as the time allows. I just cant think of it right now. I'll try to find it and get back at you.
thanks big toe, I ll try to find it out with those clues, ..
Freespace-3DT

I'd like some thoughts on who you want to win in my race. The green player or the red player? :)
The red one offcourse :)
The green one is to agresive. I want to se the green one destroed :)
hammering3D
29-05-2006, 07:21 PM
Freespace how about make an tunel with just a litle hole in middle and only one ship at a time cood enter and they are equal one near other and bouth try to enter first and bouth explode :D, (this is the ideea)
now the crazzy ideea :D...after they explode the bouth pillots eject, then crow on the street to the finish line :D, and to not model to hard the pilots, make some burning flame biped :D
BiG ToE-3DT
29-05-2006, 07:23 PM
going by color, not by animation, in my mind I would think that the red would be more aggressive than green. So after saying that, it would be nice to see red playing dirty, but green winning.
You could always switch the textures, if you wantedto.
Freespace-3DT
29-05-2006, 08:27 PM
Well so far it's a tie. 1 vote green, 1 vote red, and 1 vote for both wasted. :D
hammering3D, it's a pretty crazy ideea and could turn out wonderful if executed properly. However, I don't have the amount of time to plunge into such a complex final scene for this speed animation. I'll keep it just between the two racers, this time.
Man, you're sadistic. I like that.
Hey Freespace let's join our animation (I will post it tomorow if I finisht it) , where my ships came out of nowere and destroes your ships. :) (just kidding)
Ilkejav mk5
30-05-2006, 12:12 AM

bobi, I'm looking forward to seeing your animation.
Ilkejav: Why is green a cool color? ( ... H ... A ... L ... O ... ? ? ) I'm also waiting to see your work, dude. :D
So, the votes are 2 for green and 1 for red. Well, if in 24 hours this doesn't change, then Green Racer wins.
Here's a 29 second update. So far, 20 hours of work on the whole thing.

My old french teacher used to say that red cars statistically went faster than any other colour of the same car. I guess this explains why my french is so bad, too much car talk in class. It's a good thing he wasn't my science teacher too.

bobi,
Your colors and glows generate an oversaturated effect which can trouble the eye. Try to use less saturated tones and a more subtle glow.
The camera is much better than in your previous animations, you're getting there. It's alive and following the action.
I noticed you did not add motion blur to the space station. Also, if you're going to hold the race in outer space, you need to define a race course ( perhaps place some probes every few miles, so the racers know which way to go ), and you need to place a lot of objects so that the viewer can relate to them and feel speed. Otherwise you have two ships moving in a void, ... there is no feeling of speed, only of floating.
Also, the soundtrack would be more suited to a battle or a destruction derby scene than a race... Try to find inspiration in Need for Speed's soundtrack.
bobi,

I know... I know my friend. What's you said everything it's true.
I now that my past 2 scenes was quite saturated. That it's becouse I'am now in search best options in colour sheme that I like. Only satureted scene will show me what's the best mix betwen cold and hot colour.
The camera is much better than in your previous animations, you're getting there. It's alive and following the action.
Don't know is it better then in my previous animation, but I know it's not what I wanted. The first scene (don't know how I can tell that in english), I mean the first camera movement may pass, but the second (It's O.K. somehow) until kamera start moveing, is terrible. The third camera movement is a little bit better then the second, but it's quite beyond, on what I wanted.
WEll, maybe it's becouse I chat with my friend, do some picture crops in photoshop, and doing this animation in max at the same time.
It's my mistake anyway.

Good eye my friend.
Realy, I forgot to add a image blur to station. And I noticied (when checking motion blur for space station) a missing motion blur on planet too.
Must chek this when I'am go to home.
I has in plan also to put some circles, where the ships must go throught them to finisht the race. Not still shore about other objects. Maybe some asteroids?
Anyway, all kind of dearty's in race are allowed :)
Also, the soundtrack would be more suited to a battle or a destruction derby scene than a race... Try to find inspiration in Need for Speed's soundtrack.
Who say's that this is not a destruction derby (like brutal sports foodball on A500) ? :)
Althrought I will not finish this scene in the time it's on this chalage, I will try to finish it for shoore. It's not wise to let the scene unfinished, no matter what.
Hope that this chalenge will be open to post finished scene.

But this isn't about the prizes, this is about the fact that you get to give life to the lifeless, then even after you work so hard in your spare time, I beat you like you stole something. Everyone wants that. I give it away for free.

Hey FreeSpace, what compression are you using for yours. Mine is about 29 seconds at 320 x 240 and after compression its like 42 mbs. I'm still playing with it, got alot of compressions to choose from.

Here's a small teaser just to reassure you I am indeed working on something.
Going to go with a cell-shader for this one.
For the Batmobile, I really like the lines on the redesigned, final season Batman: TAS (90s) version. Didn't use any refs, just rattled this off, so I know it's not right on or anything.

just kidding, it looks good, but the ending seemed weak compared to the rest. I think it was the last camer shot. The watching them fly in is nice, I did the same thing, but in yours the camera seems to fly. If you brought it down to the crafts level, that might look better.
As for everyone else. These aren't due until Friday. So there is still plenty of time for people like myself, and DerekSc who is the person responsible for this comp, to get them finished.

Looks fantastic! I love the part where they get together and are spiraling, looks like the way racing hovercraft like that would draft off each other. I always loved the old Star Wars Pod Racing game, and this brings back all those great feelings.
I liked the ending with the slow motion, edge of my seat stuff!
Once again, great job!

wow freespace! another good job!
on the other hand i'm just a bit worried that you might have concentrated too much on the visual aspects... it's the animation that counts... and hovercrafts are a tad easier to animate than real cars...
still, it's an impressive video and the camera work is pretty darn good.
Ahhh... great Job Freespace. :)
I especialy like camera shake when ship jump, and falling down. Great effects. Maybe you consider puting some wave effects when ships colide, or or some wave thruster effects. Brooooommmm... (or whiiizzzzz on this ships :) You know what I mean? :) Let's hear the ships a little.
Anyway, very cool, I know I will whach it again very soon.

Well, here it is, Batman vs. Two Face.
I'll spare you my lame excuses, but I really didn't have time to put in the effort I wanted on this one.
The cell-shaded render was taking waaaay too long too, so I did a quick and dirty low quality render.
Anyhow, I know it sucks, but it's here, so enjoy. :)

D'oh, just noticed something. The wheels are going fast, but I managed to time it so they look like they're going really slow. :P It's that old wagon-wheel effect thing (thank god they're not going backwards). I didn't really have time to preview it until now, just threw it all in Premiere and uploaded it.
I didn't put my times above, took about 5 hours to set up the scene (Two Face's car was giving me errors in Maya when trying to texture it, no idea why), the buildings were from a previous speed modeling challenge. About 4 hours for the animating on top of that (I know, it doesn't look it, hardly had a chance to look at the graphs).
Good entry BiG ToE, really like the jostling and action going on between the two cars.
I want to see more entries, my POS is definitely not worth a 3rd place finish! :)

C&C:
Freespace: What can I say, it's a great piece of work. Nothing I would change. If you want to add to it, I'd suggest some shots of the drivers at the controls, and maybe some shots from the drivers perspective as they zoom by the posts and stuff. Thanks for the vote, btw.
BiG ToE: Nice job, the cars have a lot of character. Maybe have the cars turn more when they're bumping in the overhead shot, but otherwise it looks solid.
anem8r: I love the aquatic feel to your models and the movement, very flowing, just could be a touch more exciting though.
hammering3d: Looks like an interesting start, need to watch those floating cars though. :)
Terrarist: Nicely choreographed chase, like the camera angles, but you may want to smooth out the abrupt camera stop when it swings in behind the second plane.
Curtis Martin: Really well done as well, loved watching it. The only thing that put you in second, is sometimes I felt like I was too close (even inside the model), and other times too far (couldn't tell what was going on). Really great though, lots of fun to watch.
XYZ: As I mentioned, loved the remote control look of the cars, but it kind of threw me off that the wheels weren't turning (rotating or side to side). Good job though, still is exciting and has lots going on.
Nice to see so many entries in the end, you guys had me worried there! :)
well, even though I think that animating a flying object is easier than animating a car,, we cant deny that freespace and cuttis martin did a good job so..
1 freespace good job,, animation and cameras are very fluent.
2 cuttis martin ( it was too long, suddenly I didnt know if it was looping or what {which massive attack album is that? })
3 Dereksc ,, I liked some parts, others still need work, but it is ok for a speed anim challenge, the movement of the cars is ok,,.
big toe,, the same for yours,, I like many things of your ani, but others need work.
anem8or, I liked yours a lot,, those rare ships fly so smoothly, that looks good,, but I still think the other guys did better,
hammering3d, you have just started a new animation type called blink animation :D ,,, good job anyway.
Terrarist: looks nice but still need work.
dereksc : I know the wheels doesnt rotate, but believe me, I didnt have time,, I did that in two hours cause I had to leave.. I also know the cars slow down suddently and that looks awful ,, but anyway. And I dont know if the new RC cars have an antena,, I suppouse they do,, but I really dont know if mine are RC or what. :D

1) Freespace #$$#$!!--- (Yes... Im hating on you:) seriously.. great job
2) xYZ ---Nice use of secondary animation. Even though the wheels did not turn i still
got the feeling theat the cars were "pushed" by a motor, not pulled which
seems to be a common mistake in anmating cars.
3) DerekSC --- nice clip. My only crit. The first part when they did that hard turn was
great. When the car was dodging thru traffic, it was kinda robotic
looking. Add some drift and secondary animation...make it less perfect...

my vote is we do a fight scene using weapons of some sort....
DerekSc
04-06-2006, 09:35 PM
Congrats to the winners! :)
In my humble opinion, a fight scene can take a really long time to get right. I did one in 4 weeks while learning Max, and it wasn't polished or anything (Fall of the Black Eagle, in the animation part of my web site). Perhaps instead of a whole scene, we do one super move or combo attack, that way we have time to put in lots of nice secondary animation, get the weight right, etc. Typically, when working on a video game, you will animate one move at a time, and it gets linked together in the game.
This could be something for your demo reel if it's done well. Companies don't want to see 5 minutes of ok stuff, they'd rather see that you can do 15 seconds of fantastic work (learn from my mistakes). I was talking to a guy at Sony once, and he said they were in the process of hiring someone based on a 30 second demo reel because of the quality of those 30 seconds.
Any other opinions on this? BT, what do you have in mind?
BiG ToE-3DT
04-06-2006, 09:42 PM
I was think we might want to stick with some kind of shape animation for the next one. Only because a few people have stated that they dont have a character or know how to create a bone system.
On the other hand, we could start doing the cycles (walk, run, jump, fall, get up). And whoever can handle it, do so.
DerekSc: your right about the good vs the fantastic. I had a meeting with EA, here in Chicago. The lady I talked with said they don't want a well rounded artist that is good at everything, but someone great at one thing. Then she showed me some demo reels people had sent in, what was good what was bad. One of the reels she showed had a godd 5 to 10 second animation, she said we hired that guy, because of that animation. The rest of his reel, they didn't even look at.
Freespace-3DT
04-06-2006, 10:11 PM
Hey thanks guys, and congrats to Curtis and XYZ on a job well done.
As for not having a character or bone system, you can always just use the Biped in 3dsmax. If you don't use 3dsmax, well... that's your fault. ;P
martimus
04-06-2006, 10:13 PM
Depends on where you want to work.
The larger companies like the one you mentioned, EA, with hundreds of employees will want specialists, but the smaller companies that perhaps have around a dozen would find good use for an all rounder.
Perhaps just a walk cycle would be good to begin the character animation challenges with

I walk cycle is a good idea, but it should be a walk cycle to a certian mood, e.g. creeping, stealth etc. and I also think others like get up, fall, and a character action move and so on would be suitable for the character animation challenges.
Martimus havent seen you lately for the comps!? You must be busy dude!
If you are doing the character animations, let's get the idea a bit more original.
Walk cycle?
Well... no human character isn't a chicken to walk cycle. :)

Shape animation, BT? Hmmm... how about:
A pinball machine.
Board game where the pieces come to life (chess, Monopoly, etc...).
Asteroid field with a ship navigating it.
A sinking ship.
A chain-reaction mouse trap (like the old board game).
Some sort of planetary explorer (like the Mars rover).

Imagine this if you please:
Two starfleets approaching one another. Capital ships from each fleet deploy several small squadrons of fighters. Long range siege frigates start to rain energy and fire upon their distant foes. Heavy bombers uncloak just before attacking the enemy capital ships and then dissapear again before being covered with cannonfire. ... In essence, a fleet battle. Think of Homeworld, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Freelancer, Gundam Seed, Wing Commander... Think epic destruction.
DerekSc
05-06-2006, 05:28 AM
Hehehe, funny. The whole time I was reading your post, I was thinking of ships from the one thing you didn't name... Star Trek (Nemesis was on last night). Oh yeah, and Starship Troopers, was thinking of that too.
Sounds good, and I guess we can make it as big as we'd like (or as small, based on personal time restrictions).
martimus
05-06-2006, 05:45 AM
haha that might be achievable for you in a week freespace, but i fear an epic space battle might be a tad too much to acheive in such a short time for the rest of us 'sane' people :p

05-06-2006, 06:12 AM
LOL, exactly, Derek, I forgot Star Trek ( I'd rather say the fight with the Borg cube at the beginning of First Contact, rather than that dragged on fight between Enterprise and the Scimitar... too long, too stiff ) and Starship Troopers ( though there weren't any fleet battles, those huge carriers getting blasted were gorgeous ).
Martimus, it's two weeks, right? And of course modelling will not be considered in judging... Instead, we could consider the tactical evolution of the battle. How the ships are arranged, how the strength and weaknesses of different strategies are applied, how they are arranged in formations... this lies within the animation.
