Here's an entry from me for this "Ninja" thing:
Photoshop CS2 + wacom tablet @ 2.25 hours
Not reference, scanned pencil drawing - just improved. and it probably suffered for it! :hmm:
EDIT: I meant to say "improvised" as in "made up on the spur of the moment"

artecnl: I like your colours, they build up such a nice contrast. I only have that nitpick that those two sabres look as if they were stuck in his shoulder :D otherwise well done :)
kankathoris: I'd love to see some more surrounding here, to give that character a purpose. but it's good :)

okay, now I've had a night's sleep (such as it was) and come back to take a fresh look at the image I posted. yeech! (grin) My ninja looks more like a mummy than a ninja! (ha!) and his right arm looks like it was a paper cut-out pasted over the top!
ximahmoud - thanks! and memod - you're right, of course, the background really is vague and isn't doing anything for the shot. I'll try another pic later today, this time with a bit more thought put into it.
hey artecnl - thats really nice. Very cool, very slick background. (and in so little time! wow.) It inspires me to try and create a better background! Hummmm - maybe if the composition were pulled just a tad to the left, away from being so very in the center (moving both the character and two corridors so that he's (she's?) still right there staring down the junction of both corridors, at both opponents.) you've already got that nifty video panel coming in on the right to help balance things, too. and I'd love to see just a bit more detail of the foreground ninja (like I'm one to talk!)

Alright - Ninja! I am excited about this one. Will try to do a more painterly painting, and without reference... Should be... interesting.

----------------------------
I've never really been much inte the anime/manga style before but I felt like giving it a try.
I like the way the hair turned out and how the drawing is pretty 'rough' but still clean and cartoon-like. The shading could probably need a little touching up though and a bit more contrast probably wouldn't hurt either..but it's still 'just a speedpainting' after all ;)
I might play around some more and add another version later on, but this is my only entry for now.
- Hope you like it

Hi @ all,
no reference used, Photoshop with Wacom Tablett.
approx. 6,5 hours.
Hope you like it.
@ Praetoris: never into Manga Style? Very good.. would like to see more of it.
He looks like a darker Version of Cloud from Final Fantasy VII. ;)
@ kankathoris: nice style a little bit too grey, but hey at night all cats are grey. Good work. :D
@ artecnl: Great use of colours and I like the Lights... very fast.. :)

Sorry homemacai, but Waheed wrote in the Opening Post
that editing of an already posted entry is not allowed. :(
Actually I´m asking myself why nobody comments my picture?
Is it that lame? Or is the Comicstyle not welcome?
Should I stick more to tradidional painting style?

Thanks homemacai, I appreciate your comment a lot.
After I posted it I saw many things that I could have done better...
More work on the background, some cool flower pattern on the kimono...
... but well... that´s it. Next time I´ll try it better.
And like ximahmoud an Josiah said... challenges are a great way to improve your skills
Make a second one, I´ll do it too
@ homemacai: like your babe too :)
@ vidshank: cool tatoo, gras and rain ... the hair-strands look too thick
@ de4dy: try a second one, you´ll see... you will be better and better each time
@ ximahmoud: Like the background and the colours
@ boristone: Nice, I like the the folds in his dress ... really good... how long did it take?

Boristone: NO PHOTO EDITING IS ALOUD!
Just taking a picture, putting a photoshop filter on it, and calling it your own is strictly not permitted...... :blah:

A reference is allowed in accordance with the rules. I Drew the picture in a paper, then scanned & then painted looking the reference. Then I elaborate the background. I don't put any filter!!...Just was painted with the normal brush and my mouse...
This is my draw.

I threw both the real photo and the sketch (and painting) in Photoshop, and they don't line up. The arms and legs are not at the same angle, for one thing. It's pretty close, but the differences are large enough that there's no way it's the same photo with a filter on it. There's no problem using a photo as a reference, and trying to emulate that photo as close as possible. This has been done alot in these competitions, and the way most recommended to get a life like painting, is to actually paint from real life (as opposed to making something up in your head). The grid probably had something to do with how close the pose is. I've used a grid in the past, and it helps get things lined up properly. Some measure with their thumb, others use a ruler, your choice.
So, Boristone, great job, everyone else, a little calm please, and try the Photoshop test yourself next time you suspect filter use.
Great job on all the paintings so far, keep up the good work.
Josiah

Okay, sorry. It just looked so close, that I didn't realize that you really took the time and effort to make it.

This discussion even turned into an excellent example to why we could use the new rule that I suggested. ;) If boristone had attached the photo in his(or her?) first post then we could check if he was filtering or not, plus we'd see how much thought and work he really put into his painting.
Copying a photo straight off isn't very creative or artistic if you ask me, using it as reference is another thing.
my opinion still sticks though
- Good stuff boristone

Thanks for the little trial Dereksc and for my soon absolution...Just a little thing....I don't use the grid of the paper as guide lines....I just drew directly over these quadrangular paper, that if you note, I had to paste three papers for complete the picture.
No problem about it Josiah, you are in your right...and I promise that in the next time I will include the reference pictures too.
Regards to all.

Hi, Friends.
I hope everything is alright. The present artworks are very good. Here is my first contribution at this Speed Painting Challenge. Corel PhotoPaint 12 and PhotoShop CS. 1 hour, 15 minutes, with mouse. I hope you like it.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/Ninja%202.jpg
To Ximahmoud: Your artwork # 17 is very, very nice, amigo. I like it. It’s perfect.
To Kankathoris: Your artwork # 4 is very nice. Don`t worry for the background. It’s perfect. Good artwork, amigo.
To my friends, “RR” (Reference Rayders): In this case, I used like reference Andy Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe. In special, I took the Marilyn’s Eyes. Then, I put the left eye in the right eye, and vice versa. This creats the effect of Manga’s eyes that I was looking for. Of course, is a “Ninja woman”. More dangerous than a ninja man. ¡Look at the blood in the sabre! I choosed a color range of greens to contrast with the red color of the sabre’s blood. The rest is carpentry…
You’re Welcome…

Thinking about posting a painting here. It took me about 4 hrs to finish it, is that considered speed painting or is it supposed to be a 30 min to 1hr painting?
DerekSc
10-06-2006, 10:14 AM
Generally, 1 day is ok, 4 days is not (I think that's the way it's put in the rules). So pretty much anything under 8 hours has been fine in the past. Some are faster than others, and if you just rush out some crap, you're not really learning anything then anyways. So, go ahead and post it, looking forward to seeing it. :)

Hi @ all,
@ homemacai: nice improvements...
@ rico: cool perspective...
@ Jessie_Rivers: a Kunoichi with Marylin Eyes... nice
@ Turoid: a Shaolin... nice. But i think you should do a second one with a Ninja
Here is my second entry... this time I took a more traditional approach.
Photoshop with a Wacom Graphire... 5 hours, no reference
Actually this is the same Shinobi as in the first entry.
The Paintings in his face are an influence from traditional Japanese Kabuki theater... Hope you like it
20 minutes pencil + fibrepen.

krean..very ncie one..the black is working good with other colors.just the part of the face the appear from the mask is too wide..the mask edge should be right beside the eye or it will leave space between the mask and the face and there you should darken this area, if the skin color was a little bit darker it might worked .. but because of the kabuki face style it appeared clearly..but overall the work is great
RBL..great sketch but you should add some digital media to it..
mikeb87..very nice idea..the colors are working fine for a 1 hour painting..just one thing ..HOW CAN HE SEE ? ? ? or is he the blind ninja warrior..but he don look like a ninja to me.. but it's nice anyways

@ ximahmoud: Thanks alot. You´re right the lower part of the mask should be higher also the mask
should look more like a triangular. I tried it out and he would had problems keeping the mask on his nose... hehe
The colour was also a problem how keeping the kabuki style (white face) and on the other hand add more detail to the face...
I didn´t know. So I played alot with the Curves Function of PS and kept the best result...
I appreciate every comment alot, it´s a great way to improve the skills and also more than two eyes see more!
@ RBL: Very cool, to bad it´s just a sketch. I would like to see it coloured.
Saw your works on your homepage... Great, Anubarak is my favourtite one.
@ mikeb87: cool... nice colours, good idea. I always liked blind warriors, like classic Zatoichi or Nick (played by Rutger Hauer) from Blind Fury.
i couldn't resist to do another one, as i was really unhappy with my first ninja. here's my entry for this challenge, except i decide to paint a better one ^^
good work rbl and mikeb, very nice

Woo Hoo - eventually had enough time to enter after missing a few comps... Just start with with a big well done to all entries so far, theres a nice collection of styles and ideas which is always good.
So here we go - heres my entry, created in photoshop from a scanned pencil sketch using my Wacom. About 30 mins for the sketch and around 2 hrs - 2hrs thirty for photoshop work, give or take as Ive been doing it a bit at a time when Ive had a spare twenty mins.
Tried to give it quite a stylised background to try and add motion to the scene. It may look better with a "proper" background but then I would be going beyond speed painting... Hope you like!!!

I dont deny I used a reference - what is it with everyone and the use of references all of sudden. If it will keep you happy Josiah when i get to work tomorrow I shall post both the ref and my sketch for you to look at and compare to your hearts content.
Praetoris
12-06-2006, 11:03 PM
BuffDady: If you show us your reference (if it had any mentionable 'weight' that is) it'll help us to determine how much work and effort you really put into your entry :)
Like I mentioned before, simply copying a picture straight off isn't very creative nor artistic, at least in my opinion, but it sounds like we'll find out how well made it really is tomorrow ;)
It's a good painting anyhow, I really like the simple yet effective background and his blank and spooky eyes. Kind of reminds me of that Mortal Kombat character...whatever his name was. I think it was "Reptile" or something like that?

wow buffdady, very nice. reference or not, it's a good painting. ony that ugly lensflare bothers me, a sef-painted one would have done better imho :)
i agree somehow with josiah it would be welcome to show the reference when used, hence any confusion and discussion could be avoided.
mikeb, that's a really cool one. very good, nice colors, dynamic, well done. keep up!

Hello all. This is my first time on Threedy Forums. I decided to have a go at this speed painting contest because it looked like fun and may help me improve my art.

Ok - Here is the ref I used as well as my sketch and some of the development images to show how I created the image. As you can see I have used the body shape and the style of clothes from the original but have tried to add my own interperation on it by mixing the idea with a kind of Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat look - Well thats what I was going for anyway!!!!
I know what you mean about the lens flare RICO, I just cant help but put them in. I always look at my work and think whats missing.... A lens Flare! It was a bit last minute adding the flare hence why I didnt draw it out myself. But I think it just adds a bit of energy to the piece. I just cant help but love lens flares... I need help! Professional Help!
Just a bit of an explanation - I use the sketch to help set out the shape of the figure. I then set this as a multiplication layer and draw blocks of colour and some shading on the layer beneath it. Once I have the basic outline of the shapes in colour i remove the sketch and add details to the figure and sort out any corrections in scale and shape. I find by removing the sketch it helps me to create a more realistic style as I am always tempted to go round everything with a black line if the sketch remains.

@BuffDady81: Well, i don't like using references cause sometimes the photo doesn't correspond with the way you are imaging the scene. Now, trying to exchange the sword with the staff, the position of the hand isn't no longer correct. But anyway the pic is very good! i suggest you to try to not use any reference next time, is better :shy:

Fair enough - I am impressed with your work mikeb87 and if you use no ref at all then im very impressed. I used the ref as it was exactly the pose i wanted to create, and without it I dont think the clothes would have looked as good. I dont know what a ninja wears and since I wanted to do a realistic style piece the ref was very handy - otherwise i would have ended up just putting him in a skin tight body suit ( and I am in no way saying that a skin tight body suit is a bad choice, or any one using one is wrong - i aint having a go promise!!!! I dont want to come back on here later and find 20 posts having a go at me! ) It just wasnt what i wanted for my image. it just wouldnt have looked right for the image i wanted to create!
i think think this whole ref argument is something that will just keep on being an issue, its the first time Ive really used it for one of these challenges and personnaly i have nothing against anyone else using one.
I think its just going to have to be something that everyone agrees to disagree about - and fair enough if you do use a ref then you probaly should post it.
I promise to from now on x x x x

RICO..that's a very nice paint.. i like the feal of it very much.
Tubo..nice sketch..the paint is good also..but a mask on the face would put it into our subject more ..now it's just a nude girl doing some training..but it's a bretty girl ;)
artecnl.. that's the best one of yours..it's better then the 1st one..the colors, the enviroment, the character and the pose are awsome ... well done amigo
jorel.. nice sketchy style..you should added some details on the girl
dark_maggot.. very nice anime style..i like it.
csc..very very good..i love it..the pose and the light are great..only the light should be more white.. it has this yellow tone..it make it like a sun more then a moon..it should be a moon...don't you agree ??
Glottis..very nice idea.. the look is really evil, you must saw it before, and you lived to talk about it :D
BuffDady81..ver very very good..nothing to comment...just the lens flare and the hand look kinda out of proportions..but it looks awesome overall..good job
mikeb87 ..nice one, i like it more then the 1st one..a background would be great
utarefson670..good one, i like it, may be a belt and some wrinkles on his suit would make him more real..
OKAY GUYS...WITH ALL THIS WONDERFULL ENTRIES I AM FORCED TO DO ANOTHER ONE.. I HOPE IT WILL BE AS GOOD AS YOUR ENTRIES GUYS...WELL DONE ALL

My Ninja was done in about 2hrs with Photoshop Cs1. I didn't use a sketch this is only with the wacom. I tired a few variations but this is the one that I decided to stick with. I rush it cause I have homework I needed to get to. However I think I will go back and flush this guy out alot more. Anyhow Enjoy!

rawwad.. very nice one.. i like the light very much ..and the highlight on the right fork is very very good..just one thing, the head should be more higher.. even if it was a jumping from high to low pose it still should be higher, in this pose it looks like he did it on purpose but it just a body reflix.. when you jumb from higher places the shoulders go up to prepare for the landing..i am not gonna explain the whole process but it just should be higher ;)...but everything else is great...well done
yokunaru..welcome to the speed painting.. and very nice entry..keep it up

Hi Guys,
I just can't seem to get much time for painting and commenting recently :( So busy....
I won't go into detail but the pics of the following people stood out the most to me in this challenge so far (ALL the pics entered are pretty damn class though) : Vidshank (though I know this is not voteable - shame), Artecnl, Ximahmoud, homemacai, Rico, Buffdady, Rawwad.....it's gonna be a seriously tough vote!
Excellent stuff y'all. :)
Here's all I managed to get done anyway - NO REF (lets just make that clear now shall we ;)), Photoshop, Intuos3, should've had it finished in 1.5hrs but I did a horrible stupid thing (it's half Photoshop's crappy fault tho)
....about half way through the painting I thought I'd better save it since I hadn't in a long time so I clicked 'file', as you do, but the menu to the left of file opened, obviously, Photoshop went nuts, and 'close' got clicked. When it asked me did I wanna save, instead of clicking 'cancel', I clicked BIG FAT 'NO' without thinking! Aaaaarrrrrgggggghhhhh!! When Photoshop isn't crashing (and not letting me save), this happens! It's amazing what you can get done in 45 minutes and I can never get back what I had....sob! Ok enough feeling sorry for myself :) - including having to do the first half twice anyway, it took about 2.5hrs!
It looked better before I had to resize it - soooo much detail lost...you'll really need to look close!

Hi @ all.
Just wanted to mention that my second entry is the votable one.
Also I will add the sketches of my pictures after work, due to the reference discussion.
@ Rico: very good background and lights. The Ninja looks quite creepy but what are those stings on his back and his head?
@ tubo: nice perspective. But I don´t see what she has to do with the Ninja topic!?
@ artecnl: great one. good pose, nice scenery, lights and colours. The best one for me.
@ Jorel: hmm... very scetchy, maybe you should work more on the details.
@ dark_maggot: cool, good mixture of manga and French-comic style.
@ csc: funny and good. I like his oversized sword alot.
@ Glottis: I like the expression on his face and the idea of the picture. The right side of his face (the shadowed one) looks odd.
The perspective seems wrong. Also the sword is too shiny, it looks more like neon tube.
@ BuffDady81: Very nice picture. The only point is the wooden stick. Man, that must be heavy.
And I think that it is too thick.
@ mikeb87: Cool. Cowabunga... he looks like some kind of an Evil Teenage Mutant Nija Turtle. Cool.
@ utarefson670: his pose looks quite static and the dress is strange like it is made of thick rubber. but i like the lighting.
@ rawwad: Great man. the lighting is very good. He has a strange pose but the picture is very nice.
@ yokunaru: a little bit blury. the colour of his dress is mixed and the left right shoulder seems to plain. maybe you should add more detail to the drawing.
@ crackerlips: nice one. The background with the trainig ninjas is a cool idea. I like the water in the front of the ninja.
the backlight is a little bit too bright and his right leg too thick. But overall well made.
What do you mean by saying that Artecnl and Vishanks pictures are not votable? Why not?
@ Davis: Nice Shirt and Sword. His nose looks quite thick but maybe he was boxing too much. Cool!
kreean, he's not human, more a cyborg mixed with some creepy aliens with stings on their back ;)
rawwad, davis ,crackerlips -----> great!

Kreean: Cheers for the comments. I can see where you're coming from but I didn't actually mean Artecnl's wasn't voteable too - just Vidshanks isn't (he says himself in the post #16) .I've edited my post anyway :) The light is a little bit too much in my pic I agree but I painted it a lot darker - when I saved it as a resized jpeg there was WAY too much quality/detail lost so I just did a global brighten on it to try and get back some detail! It kinda wrecked it a bit though.
Thanks Rico - Glad you like :)

@ crackerlips: Yeah, I see. I had a similar problem with my picture.
If I had darkened my picture more I had added more detail to the face but the Mask would be too dark. Actually I made the mistake when I painted the picture in Greytones and later added the colours in an additional Overlay Layer. Maybe I should turn onto another technique...

Hi, Friends.
Here is my second entry (and votable). I hope you like it. Corel Draw 12, Corel PhotoPaint 12 and PhotoShop CS. 2 hours, 15 minutes, with mouse.
To Kreean: Thanks for your opinion about my artwork. On the other hand, your artwork # 56 is very nice. I like it.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/Ninja%20Baby%20Cover%202.jpg
To my friends, “RR” (Reference Rayders): I used like reference Palomo Nocturno Nº 1’s cover and one file download of internet (to see references below).

The most important advice I can share with you is to always make sure you enjoy your artwork and have fun with your creation. I though in this when I made Ninja Baby’s cover.

Hi @ all,
welcome stojan_dimov to the Speedpainting Thread. :)
Her neck is too long, and maybe you should add more detail to your picture.
@ Jessie: Your Baby Ninja is very cool. :D
I like the Idea with the Comic Layout alot.
You have made a very creative and fresh approach to the Ninja Topic.
I mentioned it before. Due to the reference discussion I post the sketches and the steps of each picture. :dunno:

Here's my final entry;
I continued doing something with the same style as my first pic..but with a little twist to it.
I feel like I'm doing more of a 'speed-drawing' than a painting though, I usually like spending more time on concepts and ideas than on detailed colours etc :)

crackerlips..sorry to hear that, it happened to me many time before..now Ctrl+s is the keys that i press every minute while working..it's very hard when you lost a 5 minutes work, it will never be the same when you re do it...but your entry is so far very good, you are right about the darkness in it,, but it looks fine for me...well done
Davis..welcome to the speed painting challenges..yours is ver nice, a mask on the face would be great, it will make him look like a real ninja.
stojan_dimov..nice one but you may consider smooth the lines a little bit.
Jessie_Rivers..that's a unique one .. it's never done before .. very nice idea jessie
Praetoris..it's cool .. i like it, a background will make it more real and some reflection on the mask would be great also.

As usual the standard of work is awesome and so is the topic! YEAH! Anyway here is my entry. I wish I could spend more time on this and who knows, I might. I gave myself 3 hours and it took 3 and a half.
I used Adobe Illustrator and then took the file into Photoshop and messed with it. I kinda wanted a sketchy look so I left most of my construction lines etc in there. I used no reference and based the whole picture on a circle.

Praetoris - Nice Concept, Although i wish you had given your a character a face. I can see the effect you wanted to achievebut the face area just seems to really stand out in the picture. Like the outfit and weapons.
Jessie-Rivers - Good comic style, I like the idea and think you have made good use of your ref material.
Joshia - Nice pose and use of colour.
Sicksurfer - Another nice concept ( spoilt by the logo across the middle ). I like the way you have used the circle idea.
Great work everyone, and thanks for the comments and crits! - Keep it up

Praetoris: Your last concept one is really cool! Very unique picture. I do think detail on the face/mask would finish it off nicely! Nice job!
ximahmoud: Glad you like my pic. I usually do save very often but this one time, of course, I didn't. I don't like ctrl+s though as it overwrites your last save. I'm inclined to save a new file every time. Takes a lot of disk space but if I want to go back to a previous point I preferred in my work, I can and also if you only have one save and it becomes corrupt/deleted..etc, it's all gone forever! Disaster!
Your second pic is very good but I'm not quite sure about the texture of the ninja!? Makes it look bit flat. Maybe another different texture over that one would help!? I love the "Ninja Revenge" part the best.
Josiah: Glad you could make this challenge :) Very nice indeed. Great colours, pose and detail. Well done.
Sicksurfer: Fairly simple, detail-wise but the results are awesome. Love the whole circle idea - great pose...turned out really well.
Tokatune: Welcome! Great moody pic. Nice colours and silouttes. One thing though...there are mountain behind the moon! Spoils it a bit. Other than that very good!

Hi, Friends.
Here is my gift for you (no votable). Corel Draw 12, Corel PhotoPaint 12 and PhotoShop CS. 35 minutes, with mouse.
How I did it?
First, I picked only the image of “Ninja Baby’s cover”.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/Ninja%20Baby%20Prueba.jpg
Then, I used the filters of Filters’ Galery of PhotoShop Cs.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/Ninja%20Baby%20Prueba%202.jpg
I choose one part, in special, of the image, I turned it and followed applying color in several parts, until I was satisfied. Then, I followed applying filters.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/Ninja%20Baby%20%28Cara%20Monstruosa%202%29.GIF
That’s all folks.
Over time: I did one version of this last image in acrylic painting, 1 m x 1m, for my class of Painting at Mordor’s Art School. It stayed very nice.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/Imagen_250%20prueba.JPG
To Ximahmoud: I understand your dilemma. The World Cup give us the opportunity to be irresponsible every four years with justification, during all one month! HeHeHe. On the other hand I think that your two entries are fabulous. They look like very good movie posters. Do you work in this sector of movie’s business? Very nice, amigo.
My votes: In general, all artworks are very nice. Congratulations to participants. Explaining that my election don`t have nothing to see with the artistic value of the artworks presented here. It’s my personal liking simply.

The reason is the ninja under the tree - it is the same ninja that was used by boristone
as a reference and posted by Josiah...
Also the background (mountains) that is behind the moon... what can I say.... :dunno:

No, Josiah - I think what he's trying to say is that the little, silhouetted ninja under the tree on the right in Tortatune's pictures looks like the same one that Boristone used for reference,
- and you remember that you posted that same reference picture back in post #36 where you were concerned about it being used as photo-editing, rather than as simple reference.
(I do so hope that I'm not getting myself into trouble by simply trying to clear up that little confusion, tho... :hmm: )

I´m sorry to have confused you Josiah.
Kankathoris you got the point, that´s the way I ment it.
The Ninja under the tree is exactly the same ninja from the reference.
Also I think that the moon, the bats and the mountains are from pictures.
For me this is a colage not a digital painting...
Tokatune

actually the mountains were all painted and then scaled into place. Didnt have time to do all the ninjas so did use a little creative license, but then again i could pull apart some other pictures for their use of reference material. Anyway I enjoyed turning the picture around :)

aahhhhh....That makes sense. Thanks for clearing it up :)

I only hope that you don't think that my picture not is a digital painting....because was made entirely with a draw based in a reference, then painted in photoshop and took me about 12 hours made it.

Boristone you showed us the sketch and you proofed that you painted the picture...
But at Tokatunes picture there are so many different elements that somehow don´t belong together that they let me think that the picture is not painted.
As mentioned before the ninja under the tree is the one from your reference, just mirrored and rotated 10°... and the moon looks like one picture on the NASA site just slightly rotated.
If I´m wrong then I apologize in advance, but it would be only fair to show us the used reference to see how much effort was put into the picture.
