hi
previous to using max i was a maya user and i have crossed over pretty easily but the only button i cant find is the affetc pivot only. I know there is the affect pivot only button in the hiearchy..... :S tab but this is not what im looking for. Any maya user will understand that i am looking for the feature that when you press 'insert' you can freely transform the pivot point with polygons selected. In max i cannot find a way of changing the pivot point of a bunch of polygons that i have selected, the only option close to this that i can find is the affect pivot only tab which only allows you to move the pivot for the whole mesh. if im not making any sense let me know lol

dude seriously did you not read the post? i dont mean any offence but thats exactly what i said i had found and didnt want. That only effects the pivot of the mesh not of the selection of polygons, verticies, edges etc. which is what im looking for.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that tool simply doesn't exist in max. It is a pretty damn handy tool in Maya though.

I think the more straightforward way of doing this is to make a selection of the polygons you want to mess with and add a Xform modifier (similar to the soft selection modifier in maya). Within the Xform modifier, you can change the center sub-object as the pivot point, then move/rotate/scale the gizmo and collapse when done if you wish.

I find most of the time I can get by with changing the reference coordinate system between View, Screen, and Local, and cycling the pivot point between pivot point center and selection center instead of going through the Xform gizmo. Might just be bad habits though that would be faster if I just went through the Xform =)

Kind of funny, I just realized that soft selections in Maya requires a separate node but changing pivot is part of the interface, while Max has soft selection closer to the interface side and changing pivot via Xform as a separate modifier.

Anyway, hope that helps.
