hey!

@Nokill : hey....just wanted to clear somthing up....:)..see..this is work from one of the modellers in the team and we wanted to show it..just as an addition..the two halves were welded yet...so the middle of the model will be okay...
as far as the other things are concerened....dont u mean "3" sided polys? i dont see any 5 sided polys in the model.Infact...i am pretty proud of the models wires as it is based on ben manthis (highly popular and sucessful game designer) models.....so im darn proud of it...and the modeller has done a good job at it..........but everyone has their opinions....

tyjotr

i agree, i see these polygons causing no problem at all, if they do im sure they will be altered, yet i dont think that will be nessisary

Yes, but as some wise old man once told me there is an old old myth that talks about lowpoly models needing 4 edged polys. But nowadays, several scientific studies proof that that is just bull$h!T. Peolpe always think that because Subdiv modeling requires quads... but in gameart tris are kings! not only for some polygon save but also because all model is converted in tris before import to engine............

oh yes!
sorry i forgot to mention it before,,,
if u look at any game model...u will see that they are a mesh (trianlges) not quads (squares) thanks for pointing that out!

btw...dont u wanna join? anybhody? this is NOT a MOD...its an entirely different game which im having soo much fun with! i repeat,,,this is NOT a MOD

tyjotr
17-06-2006, 12:17 AM
yes he is correct :P, this is NOT a MOD, it will be a full game, we are building our own complete engine, which should allow triangles :P

tyjotr
17-06-2006, 12:18 AM
sorry, my sorces tell me it definatly will support quads and tris

it still couses errors in the model in many engines
i don't know what thay use but you never know and its better to work clean

To be honest and friendly as possible, i don't think this project has a bright future ahead. Sorry to say this, i've been a lot time on this kind of projects, and noticed the same several erros on each, and this one is no exception.

First and biggest, big team so far and small amount of work done. I know it's usual someone has the ideia talk about it with a few people and start gathering a team. But that way you'll get lots of new team members, that don't know what to do, how to do it, or what to expect... Get just a small core team, people that will lead each department of the team later. One programmer, one artist mainly.

With that core team, start developing workflows, methods, game design document, tutorials for importing, gathering references, everthing that will lead the new team members later.... Pre-prodution people, PRE-production. What i really hated when i got in new teams was too see lot of artists with nothing to do, that start getting desmotivated, someone doing models, but with no idea how to import it to the game engine, or even if the model itself would be supported by the engine, and with a big possiblity to have to restart the model. And remember don't be too ambitious on the game. I don't say don't want to create something revolutionary or something fun, but don't want something too big. One thing is to have hard work developing new gameplay stuff, which the team will find cool and fun. Other thing is to have a huge repetitive world to build. Althought, if the art direction is good, some cool creativity flowing on there, concept arts it could work though... :D

Then still with a core team, start developing the game itself. Get something finished fast. Do an alpha version of it. Don't care if it's just a box that looks like an house and a character with a simple weapon. Something playable, that will help you on the workflow creation, see how everything needs to be done. Never start building massively models, that you don't even know how they will work on the engine...

After that start improving the alpha version of the game. Start adding the stuff you want, fixing, improving.... just after that you have soemthing to show. You can get in every cg forum and surprise people. I'll be honest, if i see now a game project/mod that shows me some cool ingame stuff, i'd really like to join those (if the stuff looks cool :D ). But now, a game project that just shows me a grey shaded render and with such a large team as that, with not that much done already? Sorry but i'm out :(

Hope you don't take me wrong, it wasn't for sure my intention to destroy or to make me fell superior neither point erros just as i never finished any project yet. But i thought that the community presentation was done good, the idea was some what interensting and you handled well the community questions and flamming... But you started wrong... i've been part of lots of projects like this, i'm starting my own project now. But i'll start it alone for now. Ill start doing research, develop my own workflows, start writing things down, so if someone comes to help me later, i'll have stuff to show them, methods to work, and objectives......... at least i hope i help in any way. If you follow some of my thoughts great, i'm glad i helped someone. If not, at least that all this time wasted will make you even more motivated, and will make you want proove me how wrong i am... ufff..... i think that says all. I could keep talking all the night, but i no one will read all this anyways ...

All the best, Vitor ;)

thanks for the lengthy post :P, about a year ago now, i had a dream (*sounds like a film eh) turned on my PC and typed up what i wanted in a game. i had about 10 full pages from character creation to character movement, etc... i then conducted research over the next few months, seeing what was required in a team. (as this was a new thing for me) next i found 3 people, two programmers, and a concept artist. we worked on the concept for months.

after this we came to a wall or blockage, stoping us from moving on, so i decided it was time we got moving in the right direction, and built a small team of 5 people this consisted of 2 artists 2 programmers and me. we worked for a while...SUDDENLY!!! (haha) there was a massive interest from developers, our team boosted up to 15 peope. yet no work was actually done. slowly the team fell apart, nothing happened for a few weeks. then i thought to myself in bed...why?

the next few weeks i spent looking for some loyal team members (only 3-4) and we continued from where i had left off. yet this time we got far more work done, untill just now (6 months later) we have started advertising for programmers and artists as we decided we were going to build our own engine.

progress is still being made. yet i have found the secret! programmers love to look at artwork, it motivates them...artists love to look at program progress with their work in it. so mix the two and you have both parties working their buts off.

Hope this shows you what the team has been through and that i understand FULLY what you mean, i see projects that you are talking about every day. "Next Gen MMORPG!!!" and "fantasy mmorpg needs help!" (of course they do [mentally] :P)

yet this project doesnt fall into this categorey. yet thank you for your warning

Glad you get it good, didn't got upset with nothing i said. Cool to see that ;)

Hope then all goes well for the team and you 2 guys ;) My project is just starting now, it will be a fully modification. It's so on early stage that i don't even decided what engine lol. It will focous on interativity, AI and gameplay mainly. Single player, FPS, er i mean FP, not much shooting involved, just one level, small level not a MMORPG based on a FPS engine :D, don't want to say much more about the game itself, as i don't even know if i'll be caple of lead all this work. But someday will see :D

I just want tom mention that what Tyjotr just said is totally true, but also what vitor said is totally true. I am currently working on a full fledged internet shooter game and it is going very very well. Our core team is composed of me, the 3d artist, and a firend I met on Threedy, a programmer. What motivates me is to see my own models in his game, and he needs my models to keep going and adding stuff. The project is just big enough so we can both handle it, but is is also a great game that can pay off at the end. we Have developed an amazing workflow that lets us update the game within minutes. Small teams work best, but larger team can handle bigger work. So try to have every single memeber to keep in touch as close as possible as if it was a small team.

You can check out very limited teasers of our game. Visit http://www.bloodmasters.com/blood_info.php
for some info. the screenshots are not very up to date, but it still looks ok, IMO...

or you can check this link for some blog info and MOVIES! .... yeah just some gameplay features... http://www.bloodmasters.com/blog/

we're not looking for any devs right now... just so you know... I just wanted to point out an example of succesful indie Game Dev.
