Topic: A landscape With A Storm or A Storm Just About To Hit. its upto u whatever u like to include in a landscape, but remember it must have a dramatic mood of a Storm or Storm arriving.
hints: thick, dark clouds, wind, distruction.

Ok - straight in with a quick 20 / 30 mins painting of a storm just starting over the sea. Photoshop 7.0 and Tablet. Bit abstract, going to do a more realistic type one later but thoguht Id do this to get in the mood, get those creative juices flowing!

hi guys, i think this is a very nice topic and i hope to see great entries,
i do this one in 2 and a half hours, with ps7 and a graphire 4 , hope you like it :D, good background Buffdady :)
Arioch

Did this in about an hour and a half or in 3 "that 70's show" episodes you pick =D
Arioch
26-06-2006, 09:34 AM
here is the refrence pic i used.
buffdady: nice colors, but that horizon really needs some work. normally it wouldn't be a black line that indicates the break between ground and sky. especially on the sea, when you look far into the horizon, you will see that the water nearly melts with the sky, even more when there's a storm approaching. i know u know that anyway :)
artecnl: very cool, colors are great. that pic reflects a nice mood, really impressive! but i somehow don't get the impression of a stormy atmosphere...
arioch: very difficult to distinguish what's going on in that pic. i like the mood and the colors. i think it's a tree there. i suggest a more wide angle shot to get an impression of the scenery. also reduce some of that bluriness, that will make it way more interesting.
this is going o be a great challenge, keep going!

Arioch, nice colors but its too blurry, you should make it bigger
alletun, A big welcome to you , nice start
Rawwad what i can say, greaat lightning, great mood, and very nice colors, nice work man :D
see ya soon

Rico - thanks for the comments, but I do say it is an abstract impression of a storm, I know the black line wouldnt be there but its all part of the overall look I was going for - Didnt want a realistic sketch quite yet, just wanted to do a quick impressionistic painting. The Sea is more of a flat mirror then actual water.
Alletun - Great first entry, way to make a mark on this forum, lighting and atmosphere are very good.
Rawwad - like the effects, and the sun peaking through the clouds, very atmospheric.
Artecnl - what can I say - usual high standard. At this rate you will own all the texturing CD's

That's not true! About a month ago we downloaded few photoshop brushes (trees, lightnings etc.) and when we saw this challenge we wanted to try them out. If what we did is not allowed, we're sorry!
tyry_2
27-06-2006, 05:53 PM
This is painting chalenge.Of course those stuff are not allowed...
It is same as you put others models in your scene for a modeling chalenge...
If i were administrator i would disqualify you this time...
Sorry, but please next time try to play fair...
artecnl
27-06-2006, 06:17 PM
here are the rules (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=24525) i dont see that brushes are not allowed
tyry_2
27-06-2006, 06:55 PM
It is not mentioned in the rules because it is so obvious...
It is a painting chalenge for god saik...Only you should paint using brushes as you would in real world. But not brushes like they used...
As i said already : it is same as you put others models in your scene for a modeling chalenge...
I think administrator will think of this and write it in RULES...

Hi, i've been a long time lurker on 3dtotal and never thought my first post would be in the speedpainting, as its something ive only recently got into.... im mainly a 3d artist...
anyhow, i hope this works, its my first ever post and my only entry for this subject, hope you like it.
Great entries so far! Keep it up people!
oh, one more thing, is there a limit on image size? i wasn't sure where to find anything about that sorta stuff, i hope i got this right...

27-06-2006, 08:31 PM
Ok, so i forgot to include any useful information haha,
the image was created in photoshop using a mouse unfortunately, not enough cash for a tablet.....
anyhow it took me about 40 mins to create, would have liked to put more detail in but didnt have chance unfortunately.... well hope you like it, any crits would be much appreciated.
chulk nice entry. i like the mood and feel of a chaotic storm. but what is it? i would suggest a tumbling wave, or is it a forest in the distance?

Hello everyone.
Loong time no see :) How you're all doing? I see challenges are up and running pretty smoothly, thanks so much to Waheed :) :D
OK, I've been asked to help with solving the brushes issue. So from my point of view - the brushes aren't forbidden, those are tools that help to achieve a certain effect or mood or anything you want to be in the picture, BUT it SHOULD NOT be a pre-made part of the painting, like a tree, brush, lighting etc.
Now I'll explain why - those challenges were started and are held for you to learn. To make an effort, use your imagination and paint somehting of your own. So when you use a brush, that scatters leaf-like shapes, it's good, you need to make the stokes and paint the tree on your own. Now - when you use pre-made tree - it's no effort at all to paint this tree. And you learn nothing with it, the painting is impresonal, though technically good. And if you loose your individuality - you lose the ONE thing that makes artists different. So basically - you're just hurting yourself.
Dimov's entry is accepted, because it wasn't mentioned in the rules, that are being created on the run, when some issue comes up. But other entries like that won't be allowed anymore.
Also - please check the rules, another change needs to be made - YOU CAN'T just edit your previous work - paint over weak areas of already submitted work and call it another entry, because it's not and it misses our point here, which is to learn and have fun, guys and girls.
Anyway - I'm really glad to see new faces as well as frequent visitors to our challenges. Do have fun and learn as much as you can with it.

it would be great if people paint like manual painting, with normal brushes, then their real ability as an artist can be judged. im sure people get the point now.

I gotta add this - real pros like Linda Bergkvist, Natasha Roeoesli, Erik Tiemens, Ryan Church, Iain McCaig when using digital media - they just use standard brushes with a bit of texture. Think of it :P

Congratulations to the Challenge No 47’s winner, Artecnl. Well done, amigo.
To Josiah: I voted for you. The next one is yours. ROAR!
To Rico: Third Place is not so bad. Well done, amigo.
Reference: In this case, I used as reference the Benjamin Franklin’s Lightening rod. I made this drawing for the book “Los Inventores y sus Inventos” (The Inventors and their inventions). I made 24 pencil drawings: 24 inventors with their respective inventions. From “The Fire” to “The Computer”. I enjoyed this work very much.

Hey guys, some nice entrys so far!
Thanks Rico for your comments, i kinda intended it to be a marsh-land , or perhaps river, with forests in the background, as i said, i'd have liked to put more detail in but just didnt have time sadly. Again, thanks for the comments, and everyone keep up the good work!

Come on people, this is supposed to be fun!
With all the bitching and whining going on lately, it's hard to get inspired to do anything for these competitions. Lighten up, the whole point of these things is not to win a little CD, but to challenge and express ourselves artistically.
The general attitude in here for the last couple of competitions has really kept me away, and this current mess is not helping matters.
Please try to keep the criticism constructive, and remember this is about art.
Thank you.
(by the way, there is a simple solution if you think someone is cheating... don't vote for them.)

Stormnboy, you keep your tablet in a CUPBOARD! for shame! ;P
stojan_dimov come on man ... :)
Are you kiding with us? It is so obvious that you have used a lightning brush again...
You should definetly be disqualified now ...
it looks more like a smudge to me...
because he used a brush before and got crits about that...makes me thikn if hed be stupid enought to do the same....i dont think its its a brush...looks to unlightening-ish to be a brush...like i said...looks like a smudge :dunno:
Hey long time no see. I thought I would give to this SP a try. But I use filters and played a lot with blending mode. Is it still allright? Actually did learn things by doing so. 1h30 /Photoshop.
waheed nasir
28-06-2006, 02:56 PM
this looks nice chk...playing with filter and blending modes is okay, as long as one uses them for creative purposes. remember, our objective here is to learn things too, its better if we go into filters and blending modes as less as possible and develop actual painting skills, without taking help from other stuff. we must be sincere with everything ourselves.
hope u get my point...:).
cheers all.

Second Entry and my voteable one unless I do another... Took around 2 and a half hours from scratch in photoshop 7.0. Due to file size restrictions I have had to cut its size down by half, so you cant see the detail as well as I would have liked, but I'm happy with the images overall look.
stojan_dimov
28-06-2006, 07:23 PM
tyry_2 Why do you continue doing this? I know I'm not a cheater! I thought this would be fun, but now with your false accusations it's not. To be honest I'm more into 3D and the only reason I wanted to participate on this challenge was to have fun and to upgrade my skills, not to win CD. I've participated on speed modeling challenge and everything was fine, I had fun and learned something. It's not right to say I'm cheater just because you think I'm.

yeah, blueish-grey. cause both don't let me feel like there's a storm ahead. the colored one may let someone assume there's a fire behind, the grey one is missing a bit of personality. the image looks really cool, only the storm is missing :)

jbsniff that's awesome, my only crit is the sand in the air on the left looks overblurred to me. Did you use any reference? (Not trying to imply that it looks like you did, just curious how you approached it.)

Hey CHK, that was a good one. For big pictures, when I save, I first save a high quality version, then save a jpeg of it of lowered quality and play with it until it hovers around the 100kb file size. It would have been cool if the site allowed 150kb, but that's life.

Thanks to Forum’s friend. I come back to speak english:
Here is my second entry. Corel PhotoPaint 12 and PhotoShop CS. 45 minutes, with mouse. I hope you like it.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/Stormdog.jpg
Reference: In this case, I used as reference one picture of my she dog “Mancha”. I love dogs (animals in general) very much. Mancha live inside my house since three years ago and she is the light of my house. My family adore her. She is very spoilt! I made this picture because I couldn’t to imagine one dog inside kennel in the middle of the storm. Terrifying!

Artecnl, really like the rain effect you have going in the last one. Good job =D
CHK - thanks,..this last one is great what tool do you use to make the clouds??i have a big problem doing clouds on photshop..
Homemacai, thanks. I used painter first and play with two colors first then I use some blender brush within painter. Then I go to Photoshop and use Digital airbrush and play with some filters such as the "clouds", "noise" filters. I also play a lot with layer blending modes such as overlay. No big deal ;)!...
Artecln: Really like that last one! You stunned me!!Lol...

nice work clovishs, just think a little bit more detail might give the whole shot even more scale.
love the swirl thingy, mikeb87, but the summoning figure seems to merge with the rock a bit...some colour variation would be nice, to have it pop out more =)

I was browsing through the challenge in my work this morning, and actually found it rather strange no-one had made this joke:

a 10 minute doodle via wacom and photoshop 7.
(funny if lack of sleep for a total of two weeks included)
wow,, great entries everyone,, all sad, but great. I'm bad with the lights and that stuff so I wont participate in this one...

Brilliant entries everyone! :)
Unfortunately I have only time to comment on a few at random (sorry if I've left you out)
Artecnl (post#94): Your colour palette is awesome as always - love the moody pic.
Moljnir (post#95): Excellent take on the typical storm scene myself and nearly everyone else did....I'd print that and hang it on my wall!
Mikeb: Your pics are really interesting - Really like what you did with the skies.....the one in post #111 is particularly powerful. Nice one
CHK (post#82): Absolutely amazing sky and I love the tiny detail at the bottom of the pic. My one crit is the lightning bolt is too thick.
Rawwad (post#47): If you sit back and look at this you'd nearly mistake it as a photograph - GREAT STUFF!
Here's my take on it. Took about two hours in Photoshop with an Intuos 3. No ref.

Hi, Friends. I was very sick. I had an horrible cold. Now, I feel better. Thank heaven!
To artecnl: Thanks for your comments about my art. On the other hand, your artwork # 94 is really very nice. Congratulations.
To stormnboy: Thanks for your comments about Mancha. What happened with your dog? Missing?
To memod # 99, clovishs # 100, mikeb87 # 101 & # 111; and surboo # 109: I like your entrys. Very nice, friends.
To Glottis # 106: Your idea is great. I like for one comic’s cover, seriously. I’m sorry not have time to make it.
To Ximahmoud: Good look with your 3D cartoon series. I like to watch your work very soon. I love cartoons. I made three cartoons, of 3 min each, with the National Filmboard of Canada long ago. Of course, traditional animation, frame by frame, not 3D. On the other hand, you are necessary in this forum with your work and your right comments. Come back when you can.
Here is my third entry (votable). This time, I use only PhotoShop CS. 45 minutes, with mouse. I hope you like it.
http://www.myimagehub.com/files/2581/High%20Towers.jpg
Reference: In this case, I used as reference one picture of space shuttle, “Discovery”. I read in the newspaper that Discovery had problems in its launching. I hope nothing serious. Well, my three towers are liquid oxygen tank, and emergency propellents of Discovery.
