View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 106 - Hero/Villain Equipment

Marty_McFly-3DT
06-07-2006, 02:42 AM
The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a trender of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 12th of July 2006
Subject - Hero/Villain Equipment
Suggested By - DerekSc

Hero/Villain Equipment: Think of what Bruce Wayne does the minute he gets in the Bat-cave after a long night of fighting crime... he drops his utility belt and gloves on the desk!

Model things a super hero/villain or not so super hero/villain might use. Either make something identifiable to a current hero, or make up something of your own. Be creative!

Have Fun and Good Luck!

I do think that the Sword Of Omens is beckoning me :) or He-man's battle sheild :)
Spider-man's Web Shooters, of parts of Iron Man's Battle Suit!!!!! :)

The possibilities of existing creations is incredible, then there is the "make something up" part to explore too :) excellent :)

Nice subject - I'm in.............

DerekSc - nice SMC suggestion....

h2K1 - Nice one - crits: try rotating some of the spheres, as if they have been left there from a child, to lose some of that perfectness of CG, and make the shadows softer (this is a modeling contest, these crits are just to help with the presentation).

DahWan - Actually I think they are called "Sai's" ;P crits: (I think you just wanted to be first to post so maybe these do not apply) utilize the 60 mins. add an "E" logo where the hilt meets the blade or on the end of the hilt. Model a red ribbon tied to the end of the hilt.

ClassicGamer - First one very nice and cool presentation - looks like an ad. (same suggestion as above - mix em' up a bit to make it look like a villain put them there and not a computer graphics program).

Second entry makes me kind of skeptical though. Technically it shouldn't exist for another hour after the post time, the whole project took 2h 5min, but you posted it only one hour after the first entry. Also in my opinion the claw and the sword look too different: the sword is very clean and looped, but the claw has a messy mesh (say that five times - lol). I am not saying you didn't model it I am just trying to give an example: I get this kind of mesh when I import a .3ds or .dxf file into maya and reduce the poly count..... I don't know......

I know you got some heat from the last challenge and I did not want to add to that, but I had to note down my thoughts..........

diabolos, I don't normally do things at the same time for these. Sure i'll model it in one sitting, but then I may do something else and make the texture later. You also need time to render it. Also, not everyone posts the second they are done with the model. Oh, and if what your saying is right, he modelled faster than we thought!

hihosilver - i took that same thought in account and I am not accusing ClassicGamer of cheating, my only thoughts were that the challenge had just started (I am using the times listed by every post), the time just seemed to be a little tight (internet surfing, photo editing, posting + modelling and rendering). I am sure ClassicGamer (hey I just figured out his initials are "CG" computer graphic) will set me straight and I hope he will understand my thoughts.

D,

I have made mistakes before, after all i am not a perfect devil or else i wouldn't be a devil...........

D,

Yeah sorry about that, i actually made the Green goblin bombs first literally just after the SMC had been posted. I forgot to mention that it was a good time later when i started the Lion-O claw, as for the sword and claw, unfortuantely you can really tell that i spent so much time on the sword, and hardly bothered with this claw itself. i wanted thr small sword to look cool, and i just made the claw literally in 15 mins and crumpled it a few times, but as you say, it does look out of sorts, but it was all about the sword for me :)

As soon as i saw the challenge, i didn't need to research, the very first thing to come into me head was the green goblin's pumpkin bombs, and i went into the modelling straight away. while modelling the bombs, i was considering other things, that's when i thought about Lion-O's claw and small sword. So before i rendered the bombs and made the composition and posted, i started modelling the claw and sword. then wehn i was halfway through the lion-o sword i switched back to the bombs, rendered and posted here. then finished up the sword and claw, and then posted littler while later. This explains my time differences, i apologise, i should have mentioned this is the first post, but i forgot.

ClassicGamer - Sorry to say that because I never like this caind of talkings...but I can't help myself cause with that explication U confuse me...

so U said u model the claw half way then texture render and post the Bombs...then continue with the claw...but U have only 1h and 2min betwen u'r posts...so to finish the claw, texture it and render it and composit it and post it U have only that time ...but U said on u'r image that only rendering and texturing the claw take U 1h and 8min...

more than that...from Marty post and u'r last post u have total time of 3h 56min...and for u'r total work u have 3h 40 min...so for composing and post the image u have 16 min only...and that is ok maybe u are verry fast...and u said that u not search for referance...so is ok....

But U post an replay on the first page 18 min after Marty post...so to be logical with u'r times U shood start modeling atleast with 2-3 min before u'r post then post the replay then continue modeling...

I not think u cheat...but to be right ... I think U just mess the texturing times...and not actualy seeing exactly what time they take U...

ClassicGamer-3DT
06-07-2006, 01:47 PM
to be honest i've forgotten the exact texturing times now, this is all getting confusing for me, shall i just remove the post? all i can't remember from last night is that i modelled two entries, and then posted them. if this is a breach of the rules i will remove them, i'm getting upset by this, because i'm an honest person. but my memory is awful at the best of times. i'm going to have to retrace my steps and i'll get back to you

hammering3D
06-07-2006, 02:01 PM
hehe, not delete the posts...for me is ok no problem...I know how working at 3am, mess U'r mind :D...U are a good modeler and make verry nice models textures and renders ... and I like U are here in the contest and pleas our eyes with u'r nice models...(sorry I involve in this :( )

ClassicGamer-3DT
06-07-2006, 02:13 PM
i've looked into this, as best i can remember from last night, i modelled the bombs 2 mins after the first post on here, this took 56 mins, i then had a 10 min rest, and modelled the lion-o model, remembering now, i didn't actually render them till all modelling was completed, i then took 40 mins to render both, all together. i then posted the bombs first, had a drink, surfed the internet for a while, and then submitted the lion-o model on here too. This to the best of my knowledge took a combined time of about 162.22 mins, which translates to about 2 hours 42 mins 22 secs. which means that my rendering times may be incorrect on the renders, but i cannot re-submit so they'll have to stay wrong. I'm so sorry about all of this, i should have mentioned all of this before. It's just i can see the problems when just looking at the time differences.

I hope this helps, as my brain hurts now, and i cannot remember things properly at all. i've not got a very good memory as it is, i had a motorbike crash 5 years ago, and lost 20% of my brain, so i'm sorry if things are not consistant, i cannot help it, sorry.

i will try to remeber to say and do things correctly on here, but it is incredibly hard for me to remember things properly. I do apologise. :(

suggestion: instead of having more speculations - lets just leave the last word up to marty...........

ClassicGamer - it's too bad that you crumpled the claw, because I think you have very good modeling skills and Andy-3DT started the whole unsmoothed (lowres) modeling for the other members to learn modeling skills and to see how the model was achieved - it took me a very very long time to see this point - as I personally have a hard time going from lowres to hires in maya.

hammering3d - you have a point there.....

afterall it's lunchtime and instead of eating i am working on my first entry - this is DerekSc's fault for a good subject - but i forgive, because I will lose a few kilos....... :smug:

Hi all,

Been a long time since I entered a challenge but I have been watching :)

I think you will figure out which super hero this accessory is from....

Software: 3D Max 7
Time: 59 minutes

Ran out of time as usual, lots of details I could have added (if I was quicker) but just glad to submit an entry.

Enjoy

This is both a hero and vilian weapon. Can anyone spell Star-wars ? =)

Software: maya 7 + photoshop. Textures in 3dsmax
Model time: 40 min
Texture & Light: 1h
Render: 6 min

First entry ever with maya, Im a 3dsmax guy but have to learn maya because im gonna study at an 3d-animation academy after summer and they use maya :) But its quite difficult to convert to the maya node based texturing system so I textured this one in max because im lazy ;P

Thank you, thank you, thank you for being so understanding once again, i will edit my two entries as soon as i can.

al3x - Amazing Magneto Helmet, i'm a serious Marvel fan here!!!! Marvel have got over 5000 characters as super hero's and villains, even the hulk is a superhero, even though he was an alter ago fuelled out of rage, he was a good guy at heart :)

DahWan - Thor's hammer, a nice entry indeed, i would have loved to have seen this textured a your modelling is excellent :)

JAC - Cool, batman calling light, would have loved to see this with atmospheric volume lighting, but a great model never the less :)

OmegaN - Wooo yeah!! :) i wondered how long it would be until i saw a lightsaber, very nice indeed :) Wonderful textures for the resting plinth :)

Diabolos - Wow! now that's a thor hammer!! you've taken the excellent modelling similar to DahWan, and then notched it up a level no offence Dahwan, but the textures are incredible, very cool indeed. Great entry there :) :) :) :)

Evan Grant - Oh yes!! :) :) :) :) Another marvel fave! blade's glaive, the model is flawless, and you lighting and texturing is awesome!!! really truelly gorgeous render there :)!!!!!

You can expect more from me from the Marvel Universe, with over 5000 characters, there's a wealth of different items we could make :)

DahWan-you have chosen a hero that i would love to be saved by :D.Good modeling considering the time invested

OmegaN-when i first read light saber i pressumed that is was a stick with glow, but I was pleasantly surprized to see a very good detailed version of a light saber.Rendering is great
Classic Gamer-love the goblin bomb, good materials render, very simple and effective modeling.
Diabolos-I see again that simple is very effective.well done.
Evan Grant- i was planning to make the same one after this...the model is good, but a couple of more cuts would make the blades sharper.
al3x-great modeling, but the material could use some work, why didn't u use the material on the "thing" that the helmet is sitting on?

I'm wondering would James Bond be considered ok? he's a hero and faces many villains, but not sure weather he's similar to superhero status as he's more familar to real world enemies such as terrorists. but he never deals with aliens of men and women of super strength of that can fly, it was just a thought, because i was looking at the gadget the James Bond has.

Personally, I think it'd be okay. He's not a normal spy and the movies aren't verry reality based. I think he's up there with superheros (he's a bitt like Batman) and allot of his kitt is verry iconic and recognizeable. Would be nice to see some of it in this contest.
But I'm not a mod ofcourse.

I have so much free time, because i'm got a diabetic foot ulcer, so i cannot walk too far, and when i do walk it's not very fast, so i cannot work at the moment, so a huge amount of my time is spent at home online and modelling :) that's the only upside to the whole thing. Having diabetes means it takes you a really really really long time to heal. The cause of my injury was back in February this year, when in the early morning i stepped on a electrical plug, and it went straight through my foot, i'm about 80% healthy now, and it looks like it'll take probably until the new year to be 100% healthy again. it's taken just over 6 months to get to this point :( I have finally got income support though, so i can still contribute to the running on the house, and have a little bit of money for myself :)

hello again everyone! here is my payback for my lowsy hammer. now, finally i had time to sit down and really texture. so beat this, diablos! :haha:

DahWan - I updated my render for you ;P :

removed Final Gather particles
went with stone material

al3x - very cool magneto helm, clean...

JAC - nice - not necessary, but a cool light/shadow fog could have been an added touch.

OmegaN - well done, welcome to MAYA, if you need any help just ask.....

Nojoy - thanks - welcome back.....

ClassicGamer - thank you, I figured I would have seen 2 more models from you - sorry to hear about the foot.

3Dvirus - thanks - nice ring, real touch from the hdri, but you have some photons articles like I did on my

hammer - i have no knowledge with max, but in maya I would have to increase the final gather qualities (I

think that is your final render settings [maybe OmegaN could explain better])

Bask - excellent - moonknight???

thegimp - the batons came out very well. you just have some "hard edges" showing up in the render from the

lower poly count - in myay we would have to change the normals to soften - is there something similar in max?

noyb - I guess I'll pass on getting x-ray vision - nice model|idea.

great entries so far guys, personally on the Bond question i would say that if things like star wars and pokemon are being allowed then why not bond, lets face it, luke or vader aren't exactly super hero status are they and i'm sure ash catchum wouldn't be called a super hero by any one. i think of spiderman, batman, superman, dare devil, blade those guys are super heroes,

a few comments :-
al3x - like the helmet, needed to be a little more pionty at the front tho i thought, the zorro hat and mask looks good but is a bit dark for me too see clearly.
Omegan - not exactly what i would call super hero stuff but great job none the less love the textures
Diabolos - your hammer (excuse the pun ) rocks, love the texture on the stone
evan grant - WOW blade is one of my fav characters and you have done his glaives real justice, great work
the gimp - nice job on the sticks, i think you have the wrong textures on the ends tho didn't think they ahd a DD on the stick thought it was more a coat of arms or something
Noyb - remind me not to go see an opticion with one of those things in his hands it looks scarey, great model and textures look very realistic

OmegaN - really nice modelling, i like the leather straps, i love the metal texturing.

DahWan - Excellent lightsabre, really nice clean and straightforward modelling, very nice indeed, with a cool chrome effect :)

DahWan: nice thor hammer (the second one). I like the stone texture.

al3x: Cool there goes Zorros stuff, the hat is a really nice model. The magneto helmet I think like another said that you could have used same texture as the ornament it stands on with a different color ofc. Otherwise its a nice model.

diabolos: I like the texture on the hammer. Its seems to be a popular hammer =)

Evan Grant: cool blade. It was a unusual texturing on it, i like it.

3Dvirus: thx. nice ring, it looks evil =)

ClassicGamer: thx man. i like the greengoblin bomb, looks little like some sort of gyro ball.

I'm a little too creative at times, and love to manipulate subjects. If I were at this forum when you did the calculator speed challenge, I would have made a hand. My definition of super hero is someone super... that acts like a hero... great definition eh? ;P Well, here's my first entry. If you don't think it should count then fine. But i'll be making more for this challenge that don't use my artistic license as much. Here is my first entry. After all, aren't little kids the modern day super villian to parents?
I had to turn the quality on this image down to 50% quality in photoshop because of filesize. So i'm sorry for the bad quality. More coming soon
btw, I love all the entries that come in. I just got 3ds max 8 and i'm going to start learning how to use it soon as possible. Then maybe my renders will be half as good as all of yours. I hope this competition doesn't rest too much on renders, after all, it's a speed MODELLING competition. If it does, I guess i'll have to learn 3ds faster than I thought! :D

OK... I'll address a few questions that seem to be haunting the halls.

Yes, there seems to be a few models that are not exactly fitting for this subject. But it's up to you guys to interpret what a "Super Hero" or "Super Villain" is. I made a starter that was pretty basic, yet designed to lead people on the right track. It's up to you guys to follow it or stray away. I can not go behind each entry to say if it's valid or not, that's something that gets saved for judging.

Now yes there can be arguments on what exactly a "Super Hero" or "Super Villain" is... but this isn't the place for arguing or fighting about the subject. The point is to model something you want to model that fits in the subject, and have fun with it!

So keep this in mind when deciding what to model. Like I said, I gave a starter to get you guys on the right track. If you're in doubt about your entry, reevaluate your entry and see if you believe it really fits the subject. Please don't ask me if your model is valid, because I can't answer that for you. If you're in that much doubt about your entry... chances are... it probably isn't. If that's the case, delete the post and make something else! There's plenty of time... so get to modeling and have some fun!

Marty

There's some pretty cool entries here, i particularly like the green lantern ring, and the Teenage mutant hero turtles.

I've had a few idea's of what else to model, but i've not been able to find very good picture references.

i wanted to model:

X-Men - Cyclops Visor &/Or X2 Glasses

Iron Man - Helmet

Thundercats - The Berserkers Hammar Hand

James Bond - The Golden Gun Made From A lighter, and lighter case, one cufflink & a fountain pen.

James Bond - Lighter/Camera Gadget

Fantastic Four - Dr Doom's Superhero Chamber = Changes Human's To Superbeings

He-man - He-man's Sheild

He-man - He-man's Sword

He-man - Skeletor's Ram Staff

Star Trek - Klingon Sword

There are just a few of my idea's, i've attempted to model 6 of the 10 idea's, some i've finished, but not decided to render as of yet, as i'm not very happy with the results. it may be the lack of results i'm getting from google image searches.
I think it may be the wording that i'm using to search for said items, but i've not found very good referecence pics. Definatly not finding a good size resolutions. Any help/suggestions?

Some amazing entries though, keep them coming :)

For X-Men.... try the special features on the DVD's. They have some sketches that you can look at there. For Iron Man's Helmet.... well each artist draws it different, so pick and choose there (Try going to a book store that sells comics, or a comic shop... and taking some pics with a digital camera or a cell phone camera if you have one.) You can also try searching for an Iron Man Bust.... there's plenty of those. Unfortunately, I don't have a good suggestion for the rest. You'd think that with the internet, references would be easy to find.... sadly... that's not always the case. :(

here's a few links I found:

He Man (http://www.planetswords.com/.sc/ms/bdd/ee/13/He-Man%20Power%20of%20the%20Universe%20Sword)

He Man 2 (http://www.sykografix.com/articles/article14/) -- Lot's of pics there.

Klingon Batleth (http://www3.telus.net/~cgatenby/blades/) Scroll down and you'll find it. or just search for the word Klingon on the page.

Now... go do your own research!

Jediego - Nice Yoda's stick, a good clean and simple entry :) Prefer you're joker's ring though, looks great :)

Evolution: Very nice Blade's sword, i remember in the film, that when someone other than blade uses it, spike form outwards and obliterate the person's hand to a bloodsoaked mess, but this is very nice modelling and the render is sweet too :)

Truman - Nice sword, a good entry indeed :)

Captain_popo - Cool leather face, not too bad modelling either, i like the render, looks just like leather :) The Freddie Krueger hat & claw looks fanstastic, and the renders are incredible :)

tanks45 - Batman's Batarang!!! oh yes! i'd looked into modelling this one myself, and i'd even got 20 mins into modelling it, but found the shape very difficult to make indeed, you've nailed it, and the chrome texture is cool too :)

nphassasin - Wow! you say you couldn't get the materials correct, they look incredible to me, i looked into this one too, but found the curvature difficult to make in the hour. The modelling is absolutely perfect, very clean and the render looks beautiful, well done :)

other models last night include 3 helmets from star wars, luckily i've managed to model all 3 of them with the beautiful symmetry, i've had a go at Darth Vader, A Storm Trooper & Boba Fett's helmet's. But i'm struggled suprisingly with textures rather than modelling at the moment, i'm like a machine with modelling, and it looks like i'm not the only one either :) It all depends weather i like the end results of not, if i will sibmit them :)

Some Excellent ideas everyone. I've nearly finished making my 5th entry :)

It's from Spider-man 2, those of you familair with the film, will remember Doc Ock's Fusion Lab right? well remember the fusion reactor? yep, i've modelled it, it's suprising how easy is was to model it too, the main reason why it was so easy to model is, that the main parts are split into 4 peices onto a base, well the 4 parts are identical, so i only had to model 1 lol :) :) :) :) , which has left me time to make a decking and a little scene. It's looking pretty good just shaded at the moment, but i wanna add the fusion reactor to the scene too, i've got about 15 mins left to model so it'll be easy to add as it's only a sphere with some volumetric lighting :).

It just came to me last night, and after a few test modelling the scene, i found out that by either simply copying the final piece 3 times or simply using an array, i'd made the model in over half the time :)

I'm rendering now, and then i'll compsite the scene later, might submit later tonight, depending on my rendering results :)

This is such a cool challange :) so glad we've got 2 weeks of it too :)

Cheers All, keep them coming :)

Well 5 renders later, and the 4th being the one i've chosen, i've finished my 5th entry :) :shout:

The modelling was very easy for me, for some reason the process came naturally to me this time round. The main structure is made from a primitive sphere with 12 sides, then edited, and the majority of the sphere was deleted and left with 2 sections from the 12, then resize, made smaller and thinner, and then dropped under a hypernurbs, and several inner extrusions and normal extrusions, the lights on the sides, is a cylinder primitive 1 height, 12 sides, squashed and extruded 1x, bevelled 4x, and copied all over the structure, the inner light boxes are primitive cubes, slightly resized that's all and a simple primitve cube as a base, with 1x knife cut and the points moved. The deck is a flat torus, filleted with a fillet of 4, and then a copy pasted on top and thinned for the hazard lines. i could have made that a selection but wanted a bump added.

Cheers All info on the render :)

Evolution, that noisy cricket is a damn good model. For me this is the soul of these contests: finding the subject that fits better the time and skills one has, so that, with such an amount of time, he can get the most good and advanced model according to his abilities. I think it's satisfying both for the artist and the viewers.

Sorry if I wasn't able to articulate my thoughts, my english sucks :P

very nice entries everyone. I wish anim8or could render half as good as the models your showing. So realistic. But i'm planning on training myself in 3ds max 8 soon as possible. Many of these models are very good. Just to clear something up, I wasn't unsure at all, I believe it's a super villian weapon, I just thought some people like to stick very close to the subject and don't stray off, and if this section is like that I just wanted to know. But I guess it's up to me, so all's well. Just starting some joker weapons from batman, also planning on making the he-man sword the ref was posted for.

tanks45:great work, modeling of that "bat-a-rang" I should handle too, but that texture is really great.

I have not enterd for challanges #106 & #107 yet
But I have a question, please

Should we make 2 models One Super Hero Equipment & One Super Villain Equipment for both 106 & 107---> Or We are allowed to make only One Super Hero or Villian Equipment for both 106 & 107?

Note :Since I'm not new to your challanges and I already have some enteries to your intresting challanges I know that I can enter how many times I want.

Hey alimn just a quick answer for ya, like you said you can enter as many times as you see fit, and you can model whatever you feel fits the subject. The 106 & 107 are week numbers not really competition numbers so 106 & 107 are the same competition just spanning two weeks rather than the traditional one week putting up the two numbers just makes it easier for everyone to see that it is a two week competition rather than a one week one. Hopefully that clears it up for ya if not or if you have more questions feel free to ask!

Though the subject matter is open to debate as to if the lead characters or ' heros ' of the storyline constitute ' super hero ' status. I suppose it will be up to the judges in the end as to what models fall within the subject matter or not.

While it varies from country to country, here in the US ' superheros ' or their feminine counterparts are typically defined as follows:

" A superhero is a fictional character who is noted for feats of courage and nobility and who usually has a colorful name and costume which serve to conceal their true identity, and abilities beyond those of normal human beings. A female superhero is sometimes called a superheroine, although this term has fallen out of favor in the modern era. "

Ok everyone... apparently there still seems to be a misunderstanding on what a "Super Hero" and a "Super Villain" is. Super being the key word that many seem to be missing. So this week's subject is going to be changed to a 1 week challenge. The next week's challenge will start on Wednesday and will be specifically named down to a genre of Comic book Super Hero or Super Villain Equipment.

Sorry to say... but Robin Hood is not a Super Hero... neither are Ghostbusters, or Pokemon, or many of the other entries this week. So instead of killing the whole week off... I'll make the appropriate changes so the wheels can keep on turning.

So continue on making what you guys are making, just know that Wednesday will be a new deal.

There probably are comic books about robin hood but that isn't where he was born nor is he a super hero in the classic sense of Superman or the Hulk or Batman.

Yedan
11-07-2006, 11:57 PM
my understanding of "comic book hero" would be a character like those created in the marvel or DC comics, x-men, superman, batman, spiderman, the punisher, the flash, blade, the green lantern, the justice league, possibly now with the computer animation and cartoons characters like the teen titans and static shock even the mutant turtles would be covered but they are all heroes based in a comic world and have, by either natural, mutant or technology super powers, batman is a human with natural human abilities but his technology makes him super, most x-men have mutant superpowers, super is well just super, characters like blade have onbtained super powers through unatural means. people like james bond, pokemon, ghost busters, men in black, indiania jones, darth vader, luke skywalker even Dr who although possibly could be called heroic are not in my view super heroes, thats my point of view anyway

Yeah.... it should've gone that way... which is why I made it a point to make a starter that would lead people in the right direction. But all should be well now. The entries for this week are to stay for this week. If someone wants to remodel a model they made this week for next weeks challenge that fits next weeks subject, they're are more than welcome to do so. As long as it is a completely new model from start to finish.

As for the "not so super" part of the brief... it was meant for characters like Batman, who technically have no real "super powers" but are considered "super heros." But I know that some people do not speak english very well on these forums which is why instead of making a really big deal about things, I just rearranged the format a bit. I hope that everyone finds this as fair as possible.

Hi all! Sorry for the silence on my end lately, and the lack of entries. I just started a new job and I've been too tired to do anything 3D lately (plus I'm contemplating retiring from the 3D world).

Anyways, any fictional character (tv, film, comics, literature...) can usually be easily classified into "good" or "evil" (especially in western culture). So really the whole "super hero" part of it was to try to narrow it down so that people weren't doing anything they pleased (like Captain Ahab's harpoon or Dr. Evil's office chair for instance). But, there have been some great entries this week even if they did go a little off topic (cheers!). I'm looking forward to next week, and I will post something for this week tomorrow (finally got a day off).

Hmmm... that made me think of something for another challenge: model a weapon used be a video game character (mentioned harpoon and thought of Scorpion)!

Marty? What do you think? I bet all the Final Fantasy people are drooling at that one.

Now I need to transfer over the files to my better computer. That won't take long though, i'm just being lazy. Excellent posts so far, I love the entries.

The image of this causes a primal fear in beings that barely have evolved thought. The destroyer of worlds and devourer of life. He came to Earth and was not defeated, only convinced to leave.

I just found this site a few days ago.. I read the rules and I hope I followed them correctly. If not, let me know and I'll try to do better next time.

Well, I've already blown it..
Why didn't my attachments show up rather than just links to the renders?

Hi mphare and welcome to the forums, please read the rules:

!3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied.

Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.!

i'm a fellow C4D user too, to make a wireframe, go into render options, and switch on Cel render with edges ticked and render the scene, then please compostie the wireframe with your render into an image no larger than 800 x 600 and 100kb in size, and you're entry will be fine :)

Hiho,

great entries so far!

I'm a bit rusty after doing nothing in C4D for almost a year... anyway the details are on the picture. :)

(and yes, Buffy is a real super hero(ine) with super powers... AFAIK.)

thats not exactly right. You make a screenshot of your editor display:

MacOS: hit Shift+Apple+3 (fullscreen) or Shift+Apple+4 (part) to make a screenshot (saved as pdf on desktop), you can load that into the composing application (e.g.: Photoshop).

Windows: hit "Print" key, and then use the paste option to copy clipboard content into the buffer of your favourite composing application (e.g.: Photoshop).

Hi and Thanks,

I have a few questions:

1. I know how to cell render for a wire render, but it says: "Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable " so I did a screen grab.

2. Why did my attachments show up as links, not as a viewable image?

I'll make the change and edit my entry.

Thanks again!

Welcome to the family. Don't worry... you can model out anything that anyone else has made before you. There are no rules against such things. So if someone else's work inspires you... feel free to model away! :)

Okay, thank you

Like always too many cool enteries this week, I don't know how can I admire your jobs in a short post before dead line but at least I can say

"CONGRATS TO EVERYONE"

Anyway....

Here is my entery for this week
"A new equipment(blade) for Sora(Kingdom Heart's hero)"
Hope he use it in Kingdom Hearts 3 PS3 not PS2! :smug:

Software used:Autodesk's 3ds Max 8

Spider-Man's web shooters.
I didn't intend it to come out like this, but on a 17" monitor the wire is just about life-size for my arm (hold your arm up to the screen). The reason for the 4 buttons is so he doesn't shoot webbing when he makes a fist or pushes on something (if all 4 are pressed, no goo, only the middle two and it's webs away!). Maya 7, 45 minutes, couple of cheap textures thrown on it. Didn't plan this one, just sat down and went at it.
Once again, great entries by all, looking forward to next week for more super-hero fun. :)
