Hi,

I am trying to Boolean a number of boxes from my latest model - A Desert Eagle. - When I try to create the "notches" from the boxes, half of them work fine. But as you can see the other half just create "holes" in the model when I attempt to Boolean. I have tried the Max User Reference, and it didn't help as I seem to be doing everything correct. If you have any ideas of how I can fix this please let me know ASAP! If it’s any help I'm using 3ds Max 8.

P.S The black circles on the pictures are where the Booleans failing, encase you didn't know :p

Quick Reply
By default, booleans in max are really bad. There're two rules you should try:

First: If all those boxes are executing the same boolean operation, attach them together. This way, instead of making a dozen boolean operations on the same haggard mesh, you just make one.

Second: Also, localize the disaster. Booleans are a joke in Max, so (if you can) detatch all the faces that will be affected and run the opperation on those. For instance, if you're putting a boolean screw into the handle of the gun, detatch the handle, and don't let the boolean muck-up the barrel.

After thinking about it a bit more
Now that I think about it, the boolean is yielding holes because you don't have a closed mesh. Somewhere on your gun there're open faces.

If you try to subtract out of a solid, closed mesh, Max will keep it a closed mesh (like your first operation). If you try to subtract out of an open mesh (like with holes), you'll get more holes.

Firstly all the items are attached as the tutorial advised me so. I think the model is a closed mesh as half of the booleans do work and they are all on the same model. I don't really understand the second thing you said could you please try to explain it more througherly and maybe add pictures it you think they'd help, sorry about this but im quite new to this 3D game.

Thanks greatly

blueSummers means you need to "detach" the surface you want to make hole from the gun itself before you perform boolean: select the face, then under Edit Geometry rollout, click "Detach". Hope that help. ^^
