Hello to you all, I just got back from work and will be starting in a while. Great theme! Too much ideas ^_^. One small reccommendation, change the rules to allow the posting of work in progress. After the "lightning brush" issue last time, I think it would help prove to others that its their actual work and redeem those unfairly labelled, if so be the case.

Just a suggestion. Good luck all!

sure wargrafix, if questioned, one can share work in progress as well, but after posting the final artwork or with that. but its not allowed to work on the final post after submitting it. this is not a section for work in progress, so things cant happen according to that.

Lolita: Very impressive start....Nice colours and characters. Hope to see more from you (in this and future challenges)

GDA: Nice drawing but would like to see colour in it.

Wargrafix: Great idea - I like the colours of the tigers but why did you not colour to the female character? (except her hair) Is that what you meant by trouble getting the right skin tone? Just a suggestion but if you colour it with the orange you mentioned, on a lower layer, you can change the hue or colour balance of just that layer until you're happy with the result. Once the shading/tone is right, it should look and work well.

Sicksurfer: I wanna see that :) .......a freaky, muntant, teddy-bear beast could be just crazy enough to win! How would you beautify the other one though?

Undertow: Welcome back. I said it before and I'll say it again - I like your style! Nice composition, texture and colouring. Are you still using a mouse?

Artecnl: First off, thanks mate for the nice words! :) Congrats to you on second place. It was way too close ;)
I love the figures and red tones in your first entry. Very moody pic (mainly from the expression on the beast's face) I like it a lot.
Nice touch with the heart of light!
I like your second entry even more than the first.....your choice of colour is excellent as always and I love the conposition. Great idea with the robot - he looks awesome!

Annatar: Ah tea! Is there anything it can't do? ;) Welcome

Tokatune: Pretty excellent for a quick sketch. The beast looks so sad and depressed. I'd like to see what happens next in the story....you must do another if you've time. Well done.

the beast was created from a very rough scribble doodle in less than 5 mins, he looked sad so decided to put a woman in there who is the object of his affection but is just not noticing him (took about 15mins to get her done) the rest then came from that. refining it and adding the background took the longest all in about 2 hours, but the basics were there in 30-40 mins

quick description... this is my first entry ever, I'm a modeller by trade, I just figured to try this out once. maybe twice. I hope you like it.
I wanted to do something dramatic and subtle because I knew I wouldn't have time to go into great detail. But I wanted to show the strength of a woman (that's why she's not crying) so anyway, I guess this is the one I'll use for judging.

ok, since everybody loves feedback, I'm going to give some:

Lolita: great pick and great way to start off the challenge. the composition and colors are good for the most part. personally, I would have liked to see some more contrast - deeper shadows and few bright highlights here and there to really make it pop. also, maybe you could work a bit more on the girl's hand. other than that, great work. oh, and welcome to the forums.

GDA: your idea is interesting, but as you may already know, it just doesn't seem..finished. you mentioned that it seemed like you had too little paper, and you're right, it shows, since the woman's head is a little too big and her body, etc. is scrunched up near the bottom of the page. it might help in the future to do some guidelines before you start drawing, just blocking off simple shapes to show where the head would go, the body, etc., so you don't find yourself running out of space. I used to have the problem all the time - but trust me, guidelines help a lot. but as they say, the more you draw, the more you improve, so can't wait to see what you do in the future. and maybe next time, some color, perhaps?

wargrafix: thank you for your comments on my painting. I really liked yours, too. I'm kind of split between the two of yours. I liked the colors and composition of your first one, but I liked the actual drawing in your second one better. also, as you have said, your first one's kind of unfinished. in the first one, you could work a bit on the girl's anatomy, especially her legs. the second one, the anatomy looks good, but I feel you could have developed the color palette a little more in that one. compositionally, the painting draws my eyes towards the head of the beast, which is probably what should happen, but the colors are conflicting with that. right now the greens of the grass and trees seem too bright and draw my eyes away from the focus of the painting. I hope that helped and/or made sense. but anyway, I like your ideas, and will be looking forward to your stuff in the next challenge.

Undertow: haha, Beast from X-Men, nice. the textures and colors you used here are kind of intersting. almost makes it look like a mix between comic book style and carboard cut-outs or something. you have some cool details in there, too. the only thing I'd say here is maybe tighten up the composition a little. the dark space around the main picture seems kind of extraneous and doesn't mix as well with the shadows as they could. maybe if you darkened the shadows a bit, it would blend together better, and bring the picture together more. but nice work overall, man.

artcnl: hey, nice paintings there. they're both good, but I'm leaning toward the second one. the first one seems like it could have been developed a bit more. the background looks really cool - nice brushwork, contrast, composition, etc. also the background has some nice sharp lines and such. it would have been really nice if you brought some of that into the foreground, because it looks a little bit washed out and fuzzy by comparison. it just seems to lack some definition. but overall the picture seems to work because of the colors. the second one, though, has really come together well. your brushwork is really great, and with the colors you managed to capture the feeling of a tropical location. also, it's a funny and unique idea, with the robot chained to the girl. maybe it's just my sick mind, but the robot's "third leg" kind of looks like a huge penis :hmm:... but anyway, you have some interesting details in there, like how you signed your name on that rock in the background. as always, great work, man.

Tokatune: interesting idea here. most people make the "beast" character look powerful, but here you made hime look like a loser, admiring the "beauty" from afar. visually, the interesting thing about this picture is black lines. the way the lines move around the picture creates some interesting spaces in the picture. I especially like how you handled the plants. also, the color palette works well, with the brightest colors at the focus of the painting. also, it's interesting how the "beauty" and the "beast" seem to share some colors, which kind of connects them even though they are some distance apart. the only things I'd say to improve would be to work with the woman a little bit. on the hand that's holding the book, I think her thumb is coming from the wrong side of her hand and also the details on her face don't seem to match the style of the rest of the painting. but overall, very nice work here.

GEK: wow, both of yours are great! the flowing lines in the first one really create a sense of depth and character in the piece, and the colors work really nicely to enhance the mood. also, as far as I can see, the anatomy looks pretty well accurate. I really like the idea in your second one, too, although it could use some more work. I know you said it was an old sketch, and you may already know there are some problems with it, but there are a few elements that seem unfinished. for example, the hands of the "beast" character in that one don't seem to be going anywhere. perhaps you could have done something with that. but anyway, you have some great ideas and skills, here. nice work! oh, and welcome to the forums.

Iryngo: very cool piece! it's a very interesting style, and the composition is just great. and of course, the idea is very interesting. the design of that robot is very cool - it's like he was designed to look scary but has a sort of innocence about him. kind of reminds me of the movie "Iron Giant" in some ways. maybe I'm just reading into it too much, but it's interesting how the robot seems to have eyes and faces all over his body. I liked the colors you used for the most part, but I kind of feel like there should be more connection between the background and foreground. I know you probably intentionally made the colors in the main part of the scene less contrasting, but maybe a bit deeper shadow would have brought it together a little more. but these are just really small things. overall, it's great. I like the way the little girl is sort of "glowing" in the picture, and how the light radiates outward from her. really professional work here.

Evan Smith: this picture is really well developed. the time you put into it really shows. however, because of this, there are some things that stand out because they are not as well developed as the rest of the painting. for one, the beast looks much more "finished" than the woman. it's really cool how you blended the colors on the beast's skin and, and his pose is really visually interesting and well done. however, the woman, by contrast, is just kind of laying there, and the colors on her face, for example, are not blended as well as they could be. I know she's just sleeping, but perhaps a bit more could have been done with her pose, and maybe her face could use just a tad more work. but overall, its very good work. I like the contrast between the color palette of the beast and the woman. also, you have some nice details, like the slight glow on the woman's arm band. nice work, man. and welcome to the forums!

Hunchy: that's one crazy looking beast there. you have some interesting ideas in there, but it seems like there is a lot more work to be done to really make this piece more complete. first of all, I like how you are not afraid to have really dark contrast in there, but perhaps all the contrast came at the expense of some detail. for example, perhaps more could have been done with the background. also, it seems your style tends towards color blending, so it would be cool to see even more blending between colors to give a greater sense of depth and volume to the characters. however, don't get too carried away with blending. some sharper shadows and highlights drawn with a smaller, more opaque brush would help bring out the colors a bit more. speaking of colors, maybe if there were some brighter colors in there, it would have helped the overall feel of the piece. also it could use some more small details, like fur, etc. perhaps the most important bit of advice I can give here is to work more on the face of the woman. the way it is right now, the chin is massive, and her mouth is too far up, and it looks really weird. since she is the focus of the piece, her face is arguably the most important element of the picture, so it deserves some extra time. anyway, keep painting, and you'll improve, man. oh, and welcome to the forums.

lickuid: interesting ideas in this one. you should definitely try this more than twice, as I think you can improve if you continue. as it is, there is a sense of "story" in you piece. that is, you can look at it, and there is a visual sense of something happening in it, some events unfolding. this is good. now some ways to improve might be to work a bit with the composition. maybe some more elements in the background would help. also, maybe just some slight details in the character in the background, to help bring him into the painting a bit more. perhaps the best way to bring the kind of depth into the picture that the subject matter suggests might be to add some more contrast to the foreground. maybe a few shadows across the face of the woman. also, for the character in the background to be in shadow like that, the light source would need to be coming from behind him. this would effect the way the shadows fall in the picture. also, having light coming from behind a character always adds a bit of drama. overall, nice work, especially for a first entry in a 2D challenge. don't get discouraged. keep at it. nice work so far, though. and welcome to the forums.

Annatar: ha, that's a very unique take on the "Beaty and the Beast" concept there. really great work. a few suggestions: you blended the colors well, but it seems like there could be some more done with the color palette. for one, more contrast may be in order. I like how you blurred the background to bring more attention to the foreground, but it doesn't seem to be enough. the foreground elements seem to sort of get "lost" in the background. maybe if the background was darker or less saturated, this would help the foreground to come out a bit more. and I think GEK might be right - the piece might look really cool if the picture was black and white except for the rose, which you could make blood red. just for kicks, I took your picture into photoshop, made it black and white, and increased the contrast - it really made a difference. the picture looked very dramatic, and with a red rose, it would probably look really sweet. anyway, give it a try, if you like. but nice work, overall man. and welcome to the forums.

mr.KOON: interesting picture here. when I looked at it at first, it looked kind of funny. you have a sort of cartoon-like dog guy, and then a pseudo-anime girl. and yet, overall the piece seems to work. you have an interesting use of colors and highlights here. I especially like the sun in the background and the way the glow comes from it. maybe a few things could be done to improve the composition, like changing the pose a little, and having something in the background other than those random black things. also, it seems like the girl's hand is too big. and why didn't you blend the colors in the girl's hand and wrist like you did in the rest of the painting? it kind of stands out. anyway, this could use some work, but overall there is something about it that makes this painting "work" visually, though I can't quite place it. nice job, and welcome to the forums.

nucron: errr, wait...

Lemmy: haha, cool idea here. punk girl with her pet "beast." I like the colors you used here, and the composition is visually interesting. however, the main problem here is it seems like the colors are a little over-blended. there are no sharp highlights and no truly dark shadows - and I think those things would improve the picture dramatically. also, painting the details in with a smaller brush might help take away that "blended" look. there are some cool things you did with coloring, though, like the way the girl's clothes are sort of see-through - I know that's kind of hard to do, but you did it well. also, a bit more could maybe have been done with the beast's design. for example, his arms just seem to go to the bottom of the picture and disappear into nothing, with no actual hands. maybe some details could have been added with respect to those kinds of things. but again, these are relatively small things. overall this is a cool idea and very well executed. nice work, man.

3djunior: ack, you posted while I was writing. no worries though, here's some feedback for you. interesting idea, there. the way you have the window dividing the painting sort of creates a unique visual composition. it's an interesting style you used. anatomically, everything looks good. maybe a bit more could have been done with the details in the woman's face. it's kind of cool how you have the woman with a bright red dress with deep shadows, and the rest of the picture has a muddy brown/grey tone. it really makes her stand out. however, perhaps there could be more contrast, with deep shadows - like in her dress - throughout the painting. for example, the dude in the background takes up a sizable portion of the picture, but he doesn't have any dark shadows on him except on his face, and this sort of makes him seem like he's not part of the picture. it's interesting the way you made him blurry and less detailed to simulate depth of field, but maybe if you also made him slightly darker and more shadowy using colors, it would heighten the effect. also, perhaps a few more reflective highlights on the window would really help sell the fact that there is glass there. overall, though, this is some nice work, and some nice visual story-telling. good work.

alright, hope I didn't miss anyone. now that everyone hates me for criticizing them, I have to go eat dinner. -ha, but seriously, though, I give criticism only with the greatest respect, and you can take it or leave it. hopefully this helped some people, because it took a while to write. anyway, see you on the forums. peace.

Lemmy

Holy crap. That was a ton of feedback. Thanks man, I think I'm gonna take this peace to a more finished state, and I'll definately address those issues.

Critiques are always welcome. It's nice to see a piece through someone elses eyes. Keep it up.

Thanks for the interesting critique. Yeah, the anatomy in the first one was tough to get down because of the pose and I was abit afraid of adding colour for her because I could have messed it up. The colours on the second was a bit bright because of the midday look i was going for. The weird thing was, the colour looked darker in painter than in sketchbook, so i needed to play it a bit safe.
I really hope in the next challenge, I might get things a bit better, since I'm still getting used to all the tools. The cool thing was that I worked for both of them without any reference. I found I tend to draw slower and emulate too much the original material when I use references.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words Nucron :) I agree with what you've said, I've no excuse for the poseof the girl, I just wanted to keep things moving so settled for the first thing i drew haha. was trying to work fast to as I've never done speed painting before but want to become quicker. coloring wise I started off with the beast and as time rolled by i was getting worried about how long it was taking so stepped up the pace a bit and didn't spend as much time comparitively on the beauty.

Following your lead I'll try and do some critiques as well :)

Lolita - I really like this one. I especially like the girls face, and your beast is interesting with that beak of a nose. The only critique I can offer is there should be stronger highlights on the top of the horns given their proximity to your light source.

GDA - I would have like to have seen more of your beast. I like what I can see of him and he looks like he would have been a cool design. I also agree with Nucron blocking out your picture with simple shape before you start detailing can really help with thing like composition, proportions, and perspective.

Wargrafix - I liked both of your pics. The first one although unfinished is very well layed out and is colored nicely. I like the way you did the reflection of the sun on the water. Very good for the amount of time spent :) One thing i feel would really anchor your characters into the scene would be some elongated shadows strecthing out in front of them away from the direction of the sun. Your second pic i really liked your beast. the shaded areas could use some more contrast i think though. also the curve of the girls hand doesn't seem to be following the curve of the beasts muscle where shes holding him. nice scene :)

Undertow - Nice style :) it makes me think stained glass when i look at it for some reason. Perhaps its the background or the blocked off colors, I like it. No real critique except mabey the shoulder of the girl where her arm is raised. it looks a bit off to me.

Artecnl - really nice work on both accounts :) I like the second one better, very well painted and detailed. I like how in the first one you made the background in the shape of a heart, albeit a freakishly disturbing one, good symbolism for the theme :)

Tokatune - I like the worshiping from afar idea you went with on this picture, insteresting take on the premise for the contest as well as a unique look and feel. no real critique to offer except i agree with what nucron said about the hand on the book.

Gek - Really great stuff :) the amount of detail in the beasts face in both pics is excellent and the girls are very well proportioned. mabey crop the first one to get rid of the jagged paint lines at the bottom

Iryngo - Nice work, excellently done. I really like the color work and the effect you achieved on the robot from the light being given off by the girl. I also like the robots expression :) at first i thought mabey more contrast in the shadow areas of the robot, but that would probably ruin the framing effect of the forground, so no real critiques :)

Hunchy - I definately think beast when i look at your guy, mean and tough hehe. :) I agree with Nucron that the girls mouth is up to high on her face. as for the shading, wanted to mention something about your highlights on the beast, it seems you highlighted some parts and not others, like the shoulder and forarm on the left side of the picture they both have areas of lighter shading, but the bicept doesn't, the same with one of his horns which is half highlighted.

Lickuid - very emotionally charged piece, i like your take on the theme.nice work. the expression on her face is good, you can tell the pain she's feeling is more than just physical. mabey add some more detail in the shading particularly on the dress to bring out the folds and wrinkles.

Annatar - cool idea very original :) nicely done beast. A couple of the blades of grass near the bottom left look like they are just hanging there, mabey extend them off the bottom

Mr. Koon - I Like it :) the characters are done well, mabey would have added a stronger edge of highlight on the side closest the sun. not sure what the black things at the bottom are though. really good job for the amount of time spent :)

Nucron - I like your setting :) very cool, and your beast is probably the most unique i've seen. The use of all soft colors really works in this pic as well. Alot of detail in there for the time spent. Not really much to add in way of critique except mabey have her hair blowing in the wind a bit to match the flags in the background. good work :)

Lemmy - One of my fav's :) the attitude and pose of the beauty is awesome. the beast could be developed more though, his details just aren't as 'tight' as the girls in particular near the bottom of the image. great work on the chain to, those kind of things are a pain the detail ;)

3djunior - Nice layout and great expressions on both characters :) the guys shirt looks too bright in comparison to how dark everything else in the background looks mabey more shadowing detail would help as it also looks a bit flat being next to the deep shadows the girl has. The girl is done excelently, no critique on her

:)

And, WOW, that was a serious feedback post nucron- very very helpful :)

Hello everyone.
Great posts and critics so far.
This is my first time in Speedpainting Challenge so i would welcome all kind of critics.
It was done in Photoshop with a Wacom in about 5 hours. I liked the rough feel and didnt want to spent more time refining the forms.

2. it's not allowed to update an entry. as you postet your pic before it may be breaking the rules.

Hey, GEK While the pic is nice, I reminded you earlier that nudity was a no-no. I read somewhere in the rules Rico, that if an adjustment was made, it must be considered as a separate entry. So if we are allowed 3 entries, a repost would knock off 2.

Simply i think that she (imho) have less detail of the creature-robot,that repeat,is COOL with a great game light-shadow and with saturated color that i like so much! :D

for the two things:

3djunior: For some reason I keep thinking Resident Evil... A very atmospheric scene. Not totaly sold on the black sketch lines on her face, but im nitpicking.

MrKoon: Lovely Girl, Cute Puppy.

Rico: Awesome robobeast :D but the girl... seems out of place for some reason. Not sure why...

Lemmy: Love it! Just Love it!! I think its her cheeky smile that sells it. The beast shares a similar smile too (though hardly as cute). I wonder what Freud would say about the horns on the beast...

1. Lolita. Great use of colors, and the composition is very intimate. Great beast design, and a very lovely lady.

2. Thanos. The focused area of details, and the use of color make this a very emotional piece. Kinda reminds me of Boo and Sulley from Monsters Inc.

3. Iryngo. Love the style and colors. The dark foreground helps pop your big ol monster out and frame your bright little lady. That monster looks like he was inspired by something out of a Mega Man game. Who doesn't like Mega Man?

I had a couple of good ideas for this challenge... I didnt get the chance to try them.
One was of a beautiful woman at a dressing table, her reflection showing the true beast inside.
The second takes an extremely loose take on what is beauty->
"..I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand.."
I thought it could make quite a picture.... "The Beast and Harlot"

Anyway.. here my votes for my personal favourites (pity we only can vote for 3 ppl, lots of very nice works this week, so choosing was no easy task.) :

1st - nucron - very nice pastell colours, reminds me on old girl+dragon pictures. :)

2nd - GEK - very nice drawing, like the style a lot.

3rd - thanos - very nice and sensitive motive.

I also liked the robot scene by artecnl (very good technical skills), iryngo (also very good technical skills), undertow (nice colors and bg composing), mr.koon (the dog-beast looks a bit like sherlok holmes foor some reason :P ), gda (maybe next time with colours, the motive had potential), tokatune (very nice, artistic style).

I know the voting is over. Just wanted to add i'm rooting for iryngo and artecln, you two stand out clearly above the rest. You have an excellent grasp on artistic and compositional devices that many overlook. I'm sure you get a kick out of seeing what other people are drawn to, I know I do.

It's unfortunate that these challenges aren't judged by a panel of artists in addition to the popular vote. I'd love to see the results compared.

Good attempts all around, there are several other really great artists (Tokai and Gek jump to mind) that i didn't mention. I look forward to seeing more from everyone.

.::Congratulations Everyone::.

I wondered what would happen in the event of a tie (or two) :)
That's very nice of Threedy to give two prizes!
