_Falling Down_
The idea,
Alrighty then, it’s time to bring life to a character. I want to see a character fall down. But not just any fall. Lets be as creative as we can with this one. Make this as original as you can. Use props if you need/want to. If you want, to add music. But don’t post anything that looks like a normal fall. Falling is easy, you always find the ground. So to spice it up, your character needs to get back up. Have fun with it. If you don’t have a character to animate, you can find one on the net(let us know you didn’t model it).
_Rules_
- The due date is August 5th, (two weeks from now) a Saturday 11pm(GMT). Voting will be on that Sunday. Post your final entry’s in the Final Entry Thread.
- Minimum animation: your animation needs to be at least 6 seconds.
- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 (you can do 640x480 if you want, but why would you).
- You can post W.I.P.s but you are only allowed one complete entry. That link is also final. You can and should post your wip’s to get help.
- Websites where you post your finals is up to you.
- Remember, it's about animation, use your time for animation, not to get the best render possible, unless you can afford it.
- Use of plug-ins not allowed. Must be key framed (hand animated)
- Try to use Quicktime or Divx if possible.
- You must post a render of some sort with your final entry post; also include a screen grab with key frames. No CHEATING.
- Voting will be as follows -
Pick your favorite animation. You will get to pick your favorite. At the end of the polling, whoever gets the most votes wins. Add any crits of final entry’s in the final entry thread.

hmmm I see more ppl are bussy an week ... maybe instead of take a brake one week and some ppl bored to dead :D .. let's do it 3 week chalnege...cause I not think some will actualy work 3 weeks non-stop and is not fair for that are free only 2 weeks...
So I gues is fair for evrybody ... for ppl that no want brake...and for ppl that want a brake....what do u say ?

Hammer, great start. But, when the guy throws his/her/its punch, there should be some kind of weight behind it. Meaning, you don't just push straight out, you pull back first, then let him have it.
The fall looks good, but he needs more bounce when he lands, also you migh twant him to slide a bit from the force that knocked him down.
The get up, he just pops up like nothing is wrong. Unless you can stand up the way he did, then shouldn't either. Get down on the floor and sstand up, try to copy that.

hammer: Ey, you starteed alreay :) That's great.
A few tips when it comes to punching. When you deliver a punch you use the upper body to drive the punch so: Upper body first, then arm. The power lies in your upper body.
Hold the anticipation longer so we expect a superpunch. If you want to knock someone over you ahve to charge up the punch first ;)

-> The Chinese farmer that just minds his own business when he is shot in the chest. With what, how or if he'll make it; you'll have to stick around to see :)

I'm totally in, but I have a couple of concerns about modifiers. Can I use a modifier to do wheel spinning? Cause my character is going to ride a scooter.

Here's a rough render for the competiton. don't mind the character in a complete still, didn't animate him until that point.

mon_stdnt: Good start. Bike already commented. It would be smart to rig that one with several pivots so you can get it to rotate correctly around that rock.
Here is my first round of blocking... I still have some trouble with the timing, but I have to go to bed now :) Probably back with more tomorrow. I will focus on the blocking of the fall till It feels right.

So far you can see the chinese is getting shot and falls to the ground. First he gets the arrow in his chest, then sees it and falls down. Tough guy eh?

Very nice, you should make his right shoulder push back( a reaction from the force of he arrow) or fall back instead of getting shot and falling straight down. Just don't hurt your self if your going to re-create it. :hurt: ;)

Thx. Yeah, I was thinking that I need a small step backwards to counter the force from the arrow. I will try this:
- He gets shot and in the pose where he sees the arrow his right foot goes back
- Then his left foot goes behind the right foot regaining balance and then he tips and falls.
(This will also remove the look of the left foot beeing glued to the ground...)
My chest hurts after shooting reference :p

Mon_stdnt: did you notice your character is falling off before he/scooter hits the rock?
Also, try leaving his feet on the scooter until impact. Or have his feet waving in the wind behind him for the hole thing. It will make the scooter look out of control, instead of a dumb kid running into a rock, on purpose.

Yeah, it was directed to you :) Don't go crazy with the camera. For a shot like this you could go with a total. It looks good in 60 fps? Why aren't you shooting in pal or ntsc?
BTW your animation is much better

Am I the only one still animating?...
Here's todays work. Figured that he has to struggle because he does not want to fall... The end of this clip is just a few frames before he passes out, then it's.. BOOM into the ground. He gets dizzy from the loss of blood and the shock before falling, hence the jiggling...

Here's what I have to fix:
-> His hip needs to get forward when he regains balance the first time...
-> I need to stage the hit faster so the reaction is more like. THUD!!! and not thuuud like it's now...
Other than that I'm pretty happy with the output. Do not look forward to doing the arms.. Head should be fun, but arms are hard...
Later people, now come on... I feel like I'm talking to myself here :ugh:

XenoAcid: there are two things I need to say
1: he has a real cartoony walk, which I like, but to keep the toon feel threw the whole animation, I would try to drag out the fall more, meaning, at the top of the stairs right when he is about to fall, I w ould have him on the edge looking down wit harms waving feet trying to move back, but can't get any grip. Then he falls.
2:It would be funny to see him fall down the stairs, pop up out of the roll and keep on walking like he meant to do that.

The clip is very good. And I think, just guesting here, but the robot actually meant to do that because he actually went for it the body language).

Good start and very similar to mine.
Couple of tweaks to make:
your animation is 11s long, it should be 6s.
I can't really notice if, when the character turns to wave and turns his head, does he turn it back? I would assume that he didn't cause he crashes :smug: .
Also when he is about to hit the log the bike feels like it slowed down pretty drastically to fly out like it did.
good job though
BTW Big ToE: that's a awesome good low-poly character. You can't really tell that it is.

capitan_popo: first let me say it doesn't need to be 6 seconds long, it has to be at least 6 seconds long. After saying that, yours seems too long. You need to get to the point faster. He drives the hell out of the bike, then has time to say hi. He should be saying hi when the clip starts. Other than that, good job.
Mon-Stdnt: at least 6 seconds, not 6 seconds total. Also, thanks for the comment about the model.

Thanks, very cool! Cool scenery, great weather, cool chicks, but the speed limit was killing me - as soon as I crossed the German border, I floored my car to 240khm until the next speed limit sign. Next time I will fly to Andelsnas and rent a car from there - it took 32 straight hours from my apartment to my house in vistdal - thank god for iPod and iTrip............. we stopped in Oslo for a beer, but I didn't see any crazy norwegian (or ani monkeys for that matter) guy with a laptop making SAC's.
Also, the norwegians have one main thing in common with me - hotrods|American Muscle............. I saw so many cool cars - it made me homesick.

this seems like a really cool topic. BiG ToE-3DT I like your monster movements so far. I wish I could animate, ill have to look into a few tutorials on rigging and I need to find out how to link different animations together, that 100 frames just never seems to be enough. then I gotta make some sort of model to animate. oh, are we aloud to use bipeds? (im using 3ds max 8), also can we reuse models/rigs for different topics?

Åndalsnes and up has the most amazing nature.... I went from Åndalsnes to Ålesund once and I was just shocked... It is so beautiful!

The reason you saw so many cool cars was because Norway's biggest street cars event took place while you were here :)

dude, thats just the standard length max sets the timeline to when you open it up, if you want your animtions to be longer, just click the little time icon in the bottom right corner of the window and you can set the animation length to whatever your heart desires.

In terms of biped, sure you can use it. and other rigs? yep, so long as you dont claim credit for the rig itself.
these challenges are about animation, not rigging

haha thanks martimus cant belive I didnt see that. I thought I had to do something with the curve editor witch just boggles my mind when I look at it. I havnt really looked into animation too much at all really, just posed a few bipeds and stuff. think ill have a go now! very doubtful that ill have an entry for this topic tho :dunno:

Hello ppl,
So I have 2 days to rig and animate :)... :dance: ...I can do it ... nice that U put the deadline to saturday cause alot of ppl are more free saturday to work ...
so finaly I made a model that is ok to rig it ...I model the body looong time ago but did't have a head for her :))...I realy can't model head's specialy woman head's...and finaly now I made an head ... so i have an character to rig...
I know is looking bad but I did't want the best looking model...and I think is OK for animation...and I'm glad I have my own model to rig...
So here is my weapon for this chalenge...I don't know if I stick to what I start with the puch cause I not like to girls to punch echoter...but well...for aniamtion sake maybe they will puch :D...

Ok, this is what I have so far. I realized that if I'm going to make the deadline I can't tweak tweak tweak... I have to let certain things pass through the qualityfilter :) I am working with the arms while falling now, but tomorrow I have to go fast forward on the get up part :)

About the this weeks challenge - I didn't get very far, my work saw to that - I guess that's why I have this big iron chain around my leg, and this barcode tatoo on the back of my neck...

Thanks. The hat and shovel aren't animated yet. That's just a constraint switch. I have to focus on the big parts to get it done. :)
The dramahand was something I came up with at work when we talked about the fall. It suddenly struck me that he HAD to do that. hehe

tho i think for the next one ill make my own rig, the weird alien character rig that comes with max is beginning to annoy me, the damn thing has 3 seperate rotation helpers for the neck! no need!

I still don't get why people spend their time rigging and modeling during an animation contest...
Is the same reason why ppl texture and lighting the models in a speed MODELING competiton ...even if are alowed CLAY renders ... just to learn all they can...
1) they learn from modeling chalege not only modeling but texture and lighting to...
2) they learn form aniamtion chalenge ... not only to aniamte but to rig to...
3) if ppl liek me not done in they life an full organic character...maybe we take that chance to have our own coleciton of litle guys full riged and play with them ...that girl from above is my first compleat organic model I have made...so if I rig her I have a rig model in my colection for future use...in speed aniamtion and other projects ...
If i was having couples of modes and I have done in past some god riging...now U cood cont of me using them or using free rigs and models ... but I just want to learn ... and U said to learn rig and modeling in other time not for speed chalenge ? ...well now evry day it will be a speed chalenge...exept sunday (when maybe special in summer ppl not stay at PC)... so I must split my time and make a schedule in the 2 weeks that a contest is ON...for working...eting ... sleaping ... modeling...learn riging...and for speed aniamtion...etc...so for U to be relax and not worry abut ppl waste their time...I model and rig in other time not in time alocate for speed aniamtion ;P ;P ;P...so or THIS or just work in sunday only for riging or I shood wait couple of years till maybe the speed animation stop and after that I start learning riging ? ;P...so relax I not waste any second of time for speed aniamtion...:D

And this time, try to get the "vote for animations" on frontpage so we get more votes than 11... :) The guy in charge can't be on vacation still, can he?
