Isn't king kong a variation or specific case of beauty and the beast?
I'm pretty sure the well known image of kong is heavly copywritten(someone else owns the idea). So copying/misrepresenting the design from the recent movie wouldn't be legal. I would like to join this contest but I am not interested in painting and distributing images other people designed and have the rights to. I also don't think it is very fun or rewarding to simply copy an existing idea. The topic seems to leave little room for innovation, as everyone on here already has a pretty good idea of what a king kong is supposed to look like.
I would think, that a speed painting forum would want to focus on synthesizing new things, because it most instances, that is what you end up doing in the industry as a concept painter. I can already imagine what everyones painting will look like.
I wouldn't have such a problem with a topic like, "a new take on kong"
universalpictures/legal (http://www.universalpictures.com/legal/index.html)
what does everyone think about sections 5 and 6?

Topic: King Kong And The Environment.
haha... what a coincidence. I was toying around with a king kong idea for the "Beauty and the Beast" challenge. :)

hello there noah...i know what u mean and i do appreciate the input, i do agree with your point though regarding exact copying of the thing. every now and then we see stuff on various sites, like paintings done of an already made concepts, even the king kong was done my many. lets not take it as stealing the idea or concept, its about presenting the thing in one's own ways, with entirely differnt settings. this challenge is just about having fun and to learn things at the same time, no one is going to use the presented artwork anywhere under his name as a genuine idea. it would be wrong if someone does that. im sure people take these challenges as a learning ground, to get tips from others and improve/develop their skills for their later, own concept paintings.
if u just follow previous challenges, ull notice that those who bring their own idea in their artwork, get much more appreciation and those who just copy an already made image, they even get harsh criticism. copying is never encouraged. lets not see in from that angle...:).

hey waheed, interesting challenge. While I'm not overjoyed with it, I suspect something interesting will happen in this challenge as with all the others. For me, it will be an question of "where" rather than "how". I'll try a little radical thinking here.....
.
.
......Thought balloons! Yes, thats the key.

Nobody is going to get sued for anything they're not making any money from. It doesn't make legal sense to sue a small group of people for making their own fan pictures. Lawyers aren't cheap, and paying them for the time involved just for a cease and desist letter better be financially worth your while.
I really don't think they're going to care, we're not stealing software or a physical product, and if anything we're helping promote their property (someone might see an image here and think "oh yeah, I was going to buy that DVD/game/soundtrack" and do so). By the way, the score from the new movie is outstanding, go pick it up for inspiration.
I don't think a new take on Kong is specifically out of the question, there are a lot of outside-box-thinkers here (that's a compliment) so I figure it would be inevitable that something non-traditional would show up anyways. Waheed, how about it? Can we do something like Kong on Mars or Kong in the year 3000 or does it have to stay within the realm of the movies?
wargrafix
31-07-2006, 07:29 AM
Hmm...DerekSc does have a very interesting point. But the movie reference may be the safest bet. I could be wrong, but lets see what waheed has to say.
In the legal aspect, nahh I doubt we'll face issues. The comes under fan art, as long as we don't copy an image direct (like a poster image), we won't be facing any action.

Great entries so far.
Here's my entry.
ENJOY!
is that some kind of sarcastic post or do you try to sell us a faked entry? I can clearly read at the bottom "AB 04 DEZEMBER IM KINO" (which means is "in cinema from 4th december"). Looks like you painted over a poster or ad scan. Please clarify.

While is nothing wrong with to look at reference material its against the rule to use another work (be it a photo or art by someone else) as base for your work.

Wow some really nice bits of work.
Come on Joshia - You know the rules, you have to post your ref if you use one, and since your usually one of the first for pulling up others for not doing this I think its a bit hypercritical (or how ever you spell it!)
RAP - What a way to make a good first impression. The atmosphere of your piece is really well concieved. Great piece of work.
MITSUI - Love the style of your image, looks like a great piece of concept art. Really nice style.
GEK - Hope you get time to colour, the sketch is really nice; with lots of potential.
ARTECNL - No surprise's here! Another top piece of work. The lighting is really nice and atmospheric.
GLOTTIS - Nice Idea and OH so true !!!!
VAMPIRE - The concept is good, I would say you need to work on your body shapes and proportions. Try using a photo of a gorilla to get the size and scale as well as the body pose, as at the moment it kind of looks like a large warrior with a sword then Kong. Also try highlighting areas of the black forground this will help to give the image more depth. Hope these comments help!
MWAHAHAhahahah - The thought of Kong throwing his kong sized poo at you is more then enough reason as to why you should never take on the Kong. Nice comic style.
RUSHIR - I like it, even though I think it is hard to really see the image / whats happening within the scene. The colours are nice. But I think you should work on trying to add more detail to your image.
JDGILL - Nice colours, though I think it would look better with an actual environment rather then than just light and shade.
GABRIEL-NOVAES - The lighting is well done and I like the angry Kong.
KOVOORAJ - I like the sense of movement in your piece and the environment is very nice.
I think thats everybody! Hopefully Ill have time to do my own. Keep up the good work !

this is my first time to really post a contribution to speed modeling ang to really post again for a very long time ... i attached in progress of kong ...
my projection on its final will be a good background to set on the mood and to change the skin tone and more on detail of the fur plus the eye should be realistic enough, well ... soon
thanks

hmm you should stop with that...I'm not much around here at 3D total but you acting is very suspicious...you even ignored my comment.
You might have over 1500posts but it seems that you still need to praise yourself with a fake account....
king-of-retards and josiah = same guy....
you should act more without attracting attention if you use both accounts...
king-of-retards replies, two minutes later josiah replies...both have the location 'in a house'
strange thing. But anyways I don't want to waste my time. This is indeed ridiculous....
Just my two cents...

lol man. You crack me up. Your so serious about this man. :)
King-of-reatards is not me. It is my friend named Mike. He started an acount about a year or so ago, and posted all that crap on my thread to be annoying. :lame: It worked too. i had no idea that it was him untill he started making fun of me for believing it. Kinda funny. I just asked him to post a vote for me in the last couple of contest. And he did. that's all...
But seriously though. There is no way that I can prove that I am not 2 people. You obvioulsy are a very confronting sort of person, and I don't think that you will believe me no matter what I say (or anyone else for that matter)
And btw, I do have more accounts, I am actually Avatar-3DT and JDgill. So enjoy :smug:
So, I am officially done with this arguement. Believe what you will, but lets stop spamming these threads with drama.

this painting made by refering to the official king kong poster i really liked the way that the light reflected of the fur creating a breath-taking picture... so i painted it, the girl is not perfect but its the best i can do using a mouse. the painting took about 2 hours to complete and about 20 min tweeking it so that it looks as good as the poster.

alright now, my first submission, my concept is about kong fighting a huge anaconda, well just never saw a movie, kong fighting big snakes although i didn't watch kong series (japanese version) ....
anyways, time stamp below:
Start: 8:36:23 AM
Break: 9:20:36 AM - 44 mins
Start Again: 11:08:05 AM
Break: 12:02:48 PM - 54 mins
Start Again: 1:16:10 PM
End: 2:20:54 PM - 64 mins
it took me 2.7 hours
if you also want to time stamp your work i'm sharing my script(VBS) here:
set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
set file = fso.CreateTextFile("log.txt")
file.WriteLine "Start:" & Time
file.Close
stamp
Sub stamp()
set file = fso.OpenTextFile("log.txt",8)
If vbYes = MsgBOx("Break",vbYesNo Or vbQuestion,"Time Stamp") then
file.WriteLine "Break: " & Time
file.Close
MsgBox "Start Again?"
set file = fso.OpenTextFile("log.txt",8)
file.WriteLine "Start Again: " & Time
file.Close
stamp
else
file.Writeline "End: " & Time
file.Close
WScript.Quit
end if
end sub
just copy paste in notepad and save it as .vbs and run it when you're going to start painting
BTW, i used PSCS2 and references are also attached herein my post
i'm thinking of another concept for my 2nd submission, as the deadline still far (aug. 12 not mistaken)
i'm still not satisfied coz there's not much details on fur of kong and scales of anaconda .... hmmm ... maybe i should change my tecqnique ..

Man I love it when everyone starts fighting over this thread. Its the most fun i have all day reading everyone's insults flying backwards and forwards. More More!!! I think we should set up a Threedy Forum fight club so we can settle all the disputes in a ring of honour. Beating the artistic licence out of each other. Two artists enter, one artist leaves.
Still dont believe you Im afraid JOSHIA - lol - you poop! I cant believe you have your mate bigging you up thats just funny, and reposting the image now that you have painted over the clearly visable writting on the first is genious!!! I do think your second image lacks a real Kong element though, The focus is defo on the dinosaur. Although I do like the piece I dont think it goes well with the topic.
KOVOORAJ - I like your piece, the positioning of the characters and the atmosphere of the piece work very well together. Very nice.
P.S I must just say I really am not taking anything seriously on this thread, and those who are should lighten up, who cares if someones copied, I think it can help improve an individuals skills. As long as they post there refs, Ive been guilty of it in the past, as JOSHIA will know, Im just having a laugh busting his chops coz he did the same to me when we did the ninja project. LIGHTEN UP EVERYBODY THIS IS SUPPOSSED TO BE FUN ! ! ! !

Okays, it wasnt as originally imagined but it turned out not too bad. Some areas I aint happy with but hey ho.
I originally wanted to make him look more royal... crown etc etc.
Still he did end up with a Sceptre of sorts.
Given the standard of work thats coming in... Ive a snowballs chance...
BuffDady81
03-08-2006, 02:29 PM
ANNATAR - Its a good concept, Your kong looks very protective. I would say if you want to improve then you need to start adding more detail, at the mo your image is very blurry. Just by adding some hair detail and getting rid of the fuzz then the image would be greatly improved. I think the key is to pick out areas of your work to help focus the eye. Just keep practicing, my skills have greatly improved by entering these contests and learning from the feedback!

Vampire: Others have already commented, so what really can I say. King Kong The Tripod? Do Gorilla's have tails and if not then.....?
Mwhahaha: Love to see him "shooting" the planes down in NYC the same way.
Gek: Brilliant stuff man. Nice detail. Only one tiny thing, Kong looks a little like Bigfoot, rather than a gorilla.
Mitsu: Brilliant Stuff.
Kovooraj: 1st Pic, Cool very cool. I swear it might be an illusion but it looks like he moves. 2nd pic Well done, great atmosphere.
Rushir: Looks like it could be really cool but extremely difficult to see whats going on.
Gabriel_novaes: Great concept. The face looks to have suffered a little. Still kicks butt though
Josiah AKA Avatar AKA JDGill AKA King Of Retards (Allegedly): Traced, copied, whatever.... It still looks cool. However if its against the rules... "AB 04 DEZEMBER IM KINO" Ooops...
Remember the 11th Commandment- "Thou Shalt Not Get Caught"
The second picture looks pretty cool. I dont mean to pick but, Kong was meant to be the focus of the picture.
Rap: What can be said?!? Brilliant brilliant stuff.
Nevermindjoker: Would like to see it finished; it has great promise
Hammerch22: Looks cool but Kong looks to be separate from the background... not IN the jungle.
Buffdaddy81 - greatly appreciate the kind words and advice. Like you say we are here to learn and develope skills, you, me, Josiah, everyone, if we cant laugh and take things easy we shouldnt be here.

Josiah does have a point. But then Kovooraj did say it was referenced from a pic.
Whats the line tween referencing and erm, copying/using. Overlaying both images shows, how should I put it?... that little if anything was changed. The Kongster fits perfectly over the original poster and the girl is a shrunken near exact match (additional hair added)
Also, I dont know where it came from but there are letters visible. (letters ND behind the girls head and others)
There may be reasons for these things but Im struggling to find em.
Oh hell what does it matter. I should listen to my own advice and chill.

lol the reason kong looks similar is because i spent about 1.8 hours on him and the girl and the enviorment about 50 min the letters in the backgroung are the letters that are on the brush i use (the brush were custom made by a picture of crumpled magazines), i like to use a lot of brushes to do my work. and i would of made the girl proportional if i had more time and if i had a tablet but apparently i my tablets broken and i had to use a mouse... also the girl i had few probles with im not really an artist who can draw human properly therfore im learning..... but this peice isnt copied.. but if you dont belive me, there is nothing i can do about it, i jus liked my painting and liked to share it, thats all.
lol crackerlips i didnt trace if thats what you saying if that was true i everyting would look exactly like the poster, im like those "perfectionist" i like my work to be almost perfect and i try my beest to do that.. but if you still think im cheating... i cant help you there, also i didnt belive that josiah ever copied or traced i actually liked the way his work is presented, i also think that accusing a person without consulting them personal is shamefull, i think if you think that a person is cheating plz p.m. them im sure they will be able to give a reasonable answer, and if you really think that person is cheating plz dont vote for that person pick another person.
ps: plz do not try to resize my painting it looks pretty ugly when its blured and unproportional to my actual posted image.

What's the difference between pm'ing and posting in the thread? This kinda thing concerns everyone here so you should give everyone that reasonable answer. I'm not here to bust your balls - I just looks to me that it's traced, since you said that you were using a mouse and also that you're not really an artist who can draw humans properly, because the girl you painted and the girl from the poster are practically identical. Kong is too, for that matter (though all scaled a bit differently). I don't care how good an artist you are (although you said you weren't), there's no way you'd be able to paint an 'exact' copy of something just by looking at a reference.....
...so.....I just commented that it should be made known to everyone when tracing to prevent all these time-wasting arguments but since you say you didn't, we'll leave it at that.
How's about from now on, if anyone suspects another of "cheating", we don't post our suspicion in the thread but instead, we pm Waheed and let him decide? If he believes the image is traced or whatever, after the person attempts to give a reasonable explanation, then you take it like a man and delete your pic!
All can be done via pm. People will know that if a picture was removed, that it broke one of the rules (unless the person states that it was removed for another reason) and will get on with the challenge and the fun!
What do you think Waheed? (or can you suggest something better?)

I'm using mouse, it's easier for me to draw or paint using it instead of pen & tablet (wacom, or some stuff), when i started using Computer as a medium, i have to conform with it.
(this is an opinion)
the issue on whether you just trace a reference it doesn't make any sense of thinking of not using that kind of tecnique ... or you just done it for only 15 minutes ... who would know? hey! we are bits and bytes of data around the www, okay? i say, if you want to be a real artist ... you should be true to your work, okay? honesty plays here, that's all i can say ... we can be like the boy who cried wolf, hey we are not living on the same world, in reality you exist.

Cheers Milan - Glad you like it. And welcome back.....have'nt seen you around for a while....glad you could make it in for this one. Off with the abstract again I see...nice! I can't help but stare at your pics for ages at a time....so many things going on. You painted over your signature though! :)
nevermindjoker: Scary stuff. I like it but I think it would look a bit better if it was less blurry. Nice for 28 mins anyway! The reason your pictures aren't showing up is because you have added two pictures to the same post (using Threedy's uploading system)....if you delete the reference (you could post it up again referring to post#93) your painting will show up!
GEK: I'd love to know how long that took you....it's class. I can't seem to do it with my tablet but I generally use the same scribbley style when drawing with pencil (or biro)....only difference is, you can pull it off a lot better than i can :) Love the colours, the scene, the expression on Kong's face...priceless!
Annatar: Thanks....yeh that's exactly the face I asked him to pull when I had him pose for me. He loves the attention really! ;P ...and don't cry...lol...Buffdady's right (though I saw only 15 mins too). (Excellent pic btw Mitsui...I could learn a lot from you...one question too - is that your work in the link in your sig? WOW!! Some of the "speed paintings" there , I couldn't do in a month, never mind a handful of hours....I'm impressed. Nice one mate)
Ooh ...nearly forgot, Annatar - Your pic, btw is pretty great. That's one serious looking ape. I wouldn't like to take him on with his gigantic sceptre stick in ther middle of the night! :) I especially like the detail in Kong's face, the grass and the girl (looks cosy:)). Nice one
Hunchy: Nice concept and colouring. I think the writing takes away from it a bit as it is too sharp but other than that, looking good. No offence too but it's also funny (sorry...my stupid sense of humour...it looks like Kong is wearing leather boots ;)...and all chained up...kinky. lol.
this is my first entry ever...

Tnx for the positive review :D
Number of hours... mmh, this piece took me 1 or 2 hour for night, for 4 "session"... i think took me around 6-7 hour, but maybe moore.
For the tecnique if you see the original sketch, you see that the 90% of original line was stolen, replaced with photoshop's brush.
I use often a micro-brush little 1 pixel, with 100% pressure on a layer set on "normal". Later softing it bringin down the layer's opacity to 35-40-50%,not with the filter "blur",that lost definition.
Try to do the same and you dont have problems to make an image like the mine...
I hope to be enough clear,if not i'm sorry but my english is a really **** :D

Mitsui, don't get roped into that stuff. Regardless of whether or not that guy cheated, your paintings are completely gorgeous. You have a talent that few have; the ability to capture the essence of a scene by showing only what needs to be shown. Few here can hold a candle to either of your pieces.

there's some great work happening in this challenge. it's especially nice to see the more creative approaches to the kong theme, but I suppose using posters as reference is alright, too, as long as you're learning and having fun (but I guess it's a good idea to post refs?). competitions are a double-edged sword in that it can bring out the best and worst in people. of course, it's no fun seeing accusations being thrown around, but hopefully we can all get back to what this thread is really all about.

Hi
Great works @ all
Welcome to the new one
well vacation is over (and every time itīs too short :D )
@ artecnl #11 ...a very creepy atmosphere. really good
@ rap #36 ...great picture rap. I like it very much. Kongs fur looks great. my favourite
@ Annatar #69 ...lol very cool idea.
@ GEK #94 ...nice details. I like the expression on his face.
@ nucron #111 ...nice mood. The light is beautiful...
@ Mitsui #21 ...very nice picture. You can feel the tension between them (pretty fast)
#78 ...again very fast and great atmosphere.
I have sawn youīre portofolio, awesome. You worked on "The Orkbabies" ?
I read about it in the "Digital Production" Magazine and saw the first episode or was it the Trailer?
Never mind, Great work! Respect!
@ Reference Users:
I donīt think that copying a picture in any way is a good thing. :ugh:
If you are using a already painted or photographed picture donīt forget that there was a
artist who made it :( . You should respect his Artwork and leave it as it is.
Donīt repaint, overpaint or copy it... someday youīll maybe be an artist too.
And I donīt think that you will feel comfort about it to see your work redone.
The Usage of reference for me is another thing. You look at things like proportions, perspective, textures and lights
and adapt them in your work. But you do not copy the whole picture or elements of it!?
Be creative, use your imagination, think of new sceneries; donīt be bound by the works of others.
I think that the flamewars about this point will go on, so maybe it would be good if Waheed could change the rules
about the usage of reference... :dunno:

hey dude i think the picture u used for referance looks almost same as the one you painted.... not saying anyting though .. and by the way your supposed to post your referance :wall: ---> ill help u with that one. i liked how you alligned kong so that it exactly matches the picture in the referance. the t rex is a "bit" off by like an centimeter but thats alrite. also if you just add a bit more detail to the backgroud it would look almost exaactly like the actual picture, btw good effort. u also forgot the small girl in da middle of the pic.

Hey annatar thx for the comment! I really played around with colors and since you mentioned opacities, you should really see some of the alternate layers i created in the second hour. This was alot of fun and its a shame what seems to be going on. In fact the funny images are what seems to be driving the challenge foward. (esp the poo throwing king kong.)

Titanium Wombat: trying to rival Glottis???!!?
Nah, just was wandering thru the AFI's top 100 movie quotes and ran into the Kong one about beauty killing the beast...and spun it! Success, failure...? Who's to say.

Yeah, sorely tempting to have Kong dressed as a jungle explorer in a city trying to trap humans. Perhaps using a triangle of cheese.
Okay its a sad idea.
I really figure the poo throwing kong could... should... shoot the planes down. A mucky mess....

I tried to do a king kong with the girl, but for some reason it kept coming out like mighty joe young. Ergghh, what a horrible film. On a scale of 1 to 10, it was minus hell.

i just wrote critiques of nearly everyone's work and then accidently closed firefox. good ones too, not be-nice-to-everybody-so-they'll-like-you, bull**** ones. shoot. me.
that being said, here'es one for last guy: thats a long damn time on one painting. buildings and planes look pretty resolved. For kong, draw what you see in your reference, not what you imagine, ie look at his right hand. see the difference? Also, make the clouds more transparent and airy, they look completely solid and flat. in other words - soften the edges ...a lot.
ps. Unless you've got plans to print this image, there's no reason to do it billboard sized.

Hmmm thats a good question, was Kong the one and only huge ape? what of his parents? and were they the only ones of their time? If so may have been a small gene pool.

if kong was the only one of its kind, and being of the male species, i bet he spent more time with that girl than we really know about  .... u know what i mean, it would aslo explain y kong would go to that lenght to protect the girl. also we dont know what happens after kong dies maby the girl becomes pregnent and has his baby and jack willl be like wtf... or maybe it would be twins.... so maby just maby there might be another revolations of huge apes called kong Jr. lol an example of this would be mighty joe young.... lol :smug:

Annatar my friend, if hollywood should hear that, i'm guessing they will rub their hands in glee thinking of the next rip-off movie to make. :-) Groovy entry. The Chrysler building looks very good. Nice blending with cool metalic shine. The clouds are better than before but still needs, as said before, a little more opacity, parts look a little too solid. Kongs fur would have benefited from a varying of tone in places. It looks a little too flat black. But hey its better than mine so...
kovooraj I dont know what disturbs me more, the blonde hair or the nail varnish/lipstick....

Josiah: iīm rather glad that the flame-war stopped, but allow me to mention something. being the curious person i am, i flipped through your online sketchbook. it is obvious that your drawing abilities are nowhere near photorealism.(but hey, we arenīt perfect ether. we are here to learn something!) the image you uploaded to this challenge is a fast drawn but none the less perfect rendition of naturalistic light.
in a nutshell:
you can do what ever you want. but do yourself a favor and stop traycing images. you learn much more without it.
Mitsui: wow! very nice style. a quick sketch, but very dynamic!
hope to see more of your work! grüsse ans dicke B oben an der spree!
crackerlips: i like kongs eyes in this one. his fur is a bit dark.
more details/highlights?
GEK: sweet. good color job. especially the sky.
VersionThirst: we had the same idea! he looks so lonely!
pasita n_n: nice fur. but donīt stop there! ad more detail to the background.(with a colorsceme you could marry foreground and background better)
considering the development of our beloved speedpainting thread, i want to make a suggestion. i think we should start judging the challenge the way the "big" threads on this forum do: you(and your internet friends/alternate accounts) do not vote for other people. judges(the forum moderators) judge all the entries in a fair way! maybe this would end all the trouble.
(at least this would provide a consistent and fair system without having 6 random people each week showing up in here to vote without ever posting anything else.) i really do think this is a serious problem.

oh, judging by the temper of some people on here they take all this very serious.
and since you can actually win something, i really do think that people develop the kind of energy you need to cheat...
concerning IP numbers: this is so easy! everyone has friends with computers.
and the ones already studying at a universty could easily use the computers in their computerlabs. not to mention internet cafés...
i just think we need a good and FAIR system for the challenge and i canīt see why we canīt do it like the 3d challenge.
(this weekīs challenge proofed to me that people will do what ever it takes to win a stupid texture cd with little value to 2d artists.
and iīm sure that the judging will involve personal opinions on all sides...)
but maybe just the people who enter the challenge should be able to vote? who knows. the best system is allways judge-based.

stephendm
15-08-2006, 10:26 PM
Either would be fine with me (ie...panel of 5 judges...or....only entrants can vote) BUT there are problems with both suggestions....
Who would this panel of judges be? I imagine moderators would be too busy and not online together or might only be interested in their own threads (which is fair enough imo) I don't think that would work unless it came down to just Waheed deciding and even then, I'm sure he has a particular favourite style/technique! Nothing wrong with that but it is his opinion and it would be his decision and might lean towards the same style every time...and there are plenty of different styles in these challenges! Sure, you can appreciate all styles of art but unless Waheed likes ALL styles equally (which is unlikely...everyone has a favourite), I don't think that would be totally fair! That's generally the point of having multiple judges!
Or if it was to be a select few of the painters/posters on this thread who were to be the ones deciding, then they would not be able to enter their own work and might have good relations with other members who have entered and would vote for them above others.
OR
If only entrants can vote, there's nothing stopping the same person from painting two or more pics (and putting very little effort into all entries except one) under different aliases, and use all votes on the better image.
All that said, I don't really think this is a BIG issue at all in these challenges but it clearly happens at least a little bit!
Sure I'll go with the flow with whatever is decided - It's not something that bothers me all that much :) Just thought I'd share my views on the subject.
Thanks :)

Crackerlips and artecnl have raise critical issues. To prevent nepotism and such from influencing the decision process, a discussion is needed to trash out the issues.
Personally these challenges are alot of fun and great practice for me. As an artist I feel as if I've grown by leaps and bounds in my technique, and hope to do so in the future. This cheating thing must be dealth with or these challenges will lose their value as entertainment and education.
Jarratt
16-08-2006, 06:08 AM
it's not neccesarily the cheating that bothers me, it's having challenges voted on by people who have no artistic background or education. Sure, it's interesting to hear these points of view, but no one wants their work judged by a farmer from Podunk.
wargrafix
16-08-2006, 11:54 AM

Maybe your right but I think some people still might try to get away with it regardless or even when nobody is doing as I suggest, people might get suspicious of others with similar styles and a big crazy punch-up would break out ...again (not literally;)) Nyeh probably not. We're heading in the right direction with this anyway

Should we go on as normal for now and open a NEW THREAD for these discussions (until we all come to a mutual decision) so we don't go destroying the challenges for current and new members??

What's wrong with Podunk? I know lots of farmer artists from Podunk who are really excellent. They use their cows as canvas and then all the pigs and chickens (also amazing artists) come around and judge all the work when their finished! ;) Not really....I've never heard of Podunk...the bit about the artistic pigs and chickens was true though :D
Seriously though, in fairness Jarratt, if your looking for a place to submit your work where 'professional' artists will see it, your in the wrong place (or the wrong thread at least). There are maybe a few people here who use their artistic skills for a living, as far as I know, but the rest are here for fun & practice.
It would be seriously cool to have Waheed or others with artistic backgrounds/education to judge and comment in detail on the work here but as much as I'd love to be wrong, it ain't gonna happen....
unless you've got something in mind!? Do you?
So what about my NEW THREAD suggestion? Anyone agree/disagree .....let's have a whole discussion in here about that too while were at it! :D

Ah, great wisdom on you part crackerlips! I'm not saying that we shouldn't maintain status quo for the time being to facilitate the challenges. Its just that for long term survival of the challenges an analysis is needed before things fall apart. I agree with the new thread idea. Personally, the cheating was excessive during this round.

I'm sure there are 5 art-minded guys at 3D total who can spare 30 minutes every few weeks to look at a some works. This is a pretty solid site, one of the best around, so please don't usher me elsewhere. You suggest that this thread is for beginners. The reality is beginners need informed opinions more than experts. Even those who are just learning to paint would benefit from advice from people with some sort of artistic education. To simply see what they would vote for would be great.
I'm also not suggesting that we do away with the current voting system. Then we could see a popular vote and a non-partisan judged vote.

Excellent point. I'm for the experts panel as well and, as a beginning speedpainter, the critique I've seen given on other's paintings has been valuable. If we could get 5 guys doing it, that would resolve the personal taste issue pretty well, or at least mute it enough that it wasn't painful! One request I would have for the experts panel is that they critique every entry. Not each expert doing every entry but each entry getting at least one critique.
The popular vote thing seems cool as well if the admins are willing to continue the count as well as do the expert judging. Also, would that imply 2 prizes awarded per contest? One to the experts choice and one to the popular vote? Just a thunk...

Jarratt: Of course I agree - who wouldn't!!.....but you left out a bit:
"but as much as I'd love to be wrong, it ain't gonna happen...." - me :)
If it did happen - yippee-ky-ay
....but it won't!
...and I'm fully aware of the awesome status of this site - I wasn't ushering you anywhere...the more the merrier - but I'd be fairly confident saying t'aint no 5 art-minded guys at 3dTotal who can spare 30 mins every few weeks (and besides, if they were to comment on everyone's work and do the judging, it would be a lot longer than 30 mins every few weeks....every few days maybe). If there are people out there with this kind of spare time and willingness and you can find 'em, I'll eat my Wacom! :)
I never suggested that this thread was 'just' for beginners though - it's for everyone, obviously (and everyone needs practice, do they not?!)....I said there's very few 'professional' artist members who post in this thread (ie...artists that get paid to be just that) which sounded like the type of people you were originally looking for to comment and judge (if it came down to specific members voting)!
Anyway, it's a marvellous plan and all, and I'm all for it but once again - who, pray tell, is gonna do it??

Hey waheed, no pressure. We all have faith in the wisdom of the 3dtotal staff. One thing, please make the next challenge an interesting one. This one felt a little like a rehash of the previous one.

1.mitsui(2nd entry)
2.GEK
3.crackerlips
itīs good to see so many members think about the judging procedure now.
the panel(i donīt know why they should be 5. the 3d challenge is judged by 3? people) is a good idea.
what makes me really sad are the opinions concerning the critiques.
ITīS UP TO US TO GIVE CRITS!
thatīs something that always bothers me in this forum. some people just post their stuff and never comment on (at least some of) the other entries.
we have to change that! i know that time is short and we all donīt have enough of it. but if we all crit some of the entries than hopefully everyone will recieve at least one crit.
(i know this happened to everyone: you post something and for the next 2 days you keep checking back for some kind of reaction, good or bad. then the
next 5 guys post their stuff without any crits...
and after the challenge you feel like no one actually saw your painting...
very sad...)

Perfectly put visuelle. After a while, I do admit wondering why bother submitting when people don't bother to comment. I mean, you don't need to critique every painting, but a few would be nice.
