View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 110 & 111 - Mouse Trap Revisited

Marty_McFly-3DT
03-08-2006, 02:41 AM
The rules are simple

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 16th of August 2006
Subject - Mouse Trap Revisited

Mouse Trap: Dead or alive... doesn't matter... a mouse trap can come in many shapes and sizes and flavors. This is a pretty open ended subject with tons of possibilities. Just try to refrain from blood and gore... we don't need a messy scene to know how your trap works. Creativity is the key here.

Have Fun and Good Luck!

Though I may not have Ravenlp's cheese, I bring you Rentokil's Advanced Mouse Trap (see reference (http://www.rentokilproducts.com.au/Images/Products/Rentokil%20Mouse%20Trap.jpg) ). The ultimate in non-non-lethal mouse traps. I normally don't like booleans, but I didn't want to get bogged down with the pesky task of maintaing a clean mesh.

TIMMYR: Amazing work there man, very very nice render too.

Hope this is allowed!
man it was hard to do this, way too ambitious i think. Well it wasn't as detailed as i would like it to be and i didn't want to start going to heavy into it otherwise there is no way i would have got it done. (it's a lil different to the originial but hey don't blame me haha)

cheers guys

Excellent! Count me in for this one, i wasn't too inspired for the hang glider SMC, but that was mainly because i'd made 4 entries, and not one was good enough in my opinion to post up. Some nice entries coming in so far. I'm definatly entering a few times for this, i've got a few creative ideas up my sleeve aswell as the more traditional approach. Good topic Marty!!!

Just wanted to say I really like your entry, but I just have one crit. Mice like to chew on cables, you might want to give that coushin sensor a wireless transmitter. This way your device stays unharmed.

pretty neat, maybe i'll try my hand at it this time...last time i wasn't good enough to try the traditional snapping mousetrap so maybe i'll try that one this time...its been a while since i competed....

p.s. Yanik there are plenty of HUMAINE traps in use, just boxes that close and trap the maouse so it can be carried to a feild etc etc

Hello my fellow modellers:wave: and Happy Birthday to Diablos!! for yestaday, I hope you had a good one buddy:)

It's been a while since I last post (4 weeks:eek:) didn't really get much inspiration from the last 4 challenges:hmm: I hadn't even opened C4D untill today:???::!!!: (I hesitated with some of the keyboard shortcuts because it's been so long, now thats bad!:blah:)

Anyway, this is my 1st entry for the week. It's the mouse trap my nan has in one of the cupboards. Luckily it hadn't caught anything when i went to fetch it :D

Hope you like:wave:

App:: Cinema 4D 9.5

You're right R3D, that IS old. Back from when men were men, and mice were....bears? :smug:

I tried something a little different with this one. Since I didn't have time to put a pink bow on it, or open up the inside and show a bomb, you'll just have to take my word that this is an imitation female mouse. Sure to drive the boys wild.

Except, of course, when the fuse runs out.

Software: 3DS Max 8
Modeling: 60 minutes
Texuring & lighting: waaay too long trying to get the perfect shade of white for the fur matched with the right amount of global illumination so the fur would do more than cast shadows on itself.

Hey R3D, just had a look at your wireframe (post 35) and i noticed that the pin doesn't connect through the metal paret and is in fact next to it. not sure if you will have to change it or not, but thought i'd let you know. cheers

ClassicGamer-3DT

Ok Everyone, i've had a go at my first entry here, it's inspired by a brilliant artist called John Shakespeare, he himself has a 3D modelled mousetrap on his gallery website here = http://www.johnshakespeare.com.au/3d/3d23.html. So i've tried to copy this model myself, it's not as good as his, but that's because of the time limit, i simply ran out of time with this one, and so i tried to get it as near to this one as possible. I liked the concept, and wanted to try and challenge myself to make a similar design in 60 mins :) All info on the render, thanks :)

It's not a trap per se, but it will get rid of any rodent issue you might have.

Simply place the device where your furry little neighbors have taken up residence, place the bait at the back of the opening and turn it on.

When the hungry critter crawls into the opening and interrupts the lightbeam, the laser discharges and the rodent is reduced to sub-atomic particles. No messy clean up to deal with !

To get technical do we have to model something which actually traps a mouse or something which kills a mouse or can it be both?

I think I know what you mean, if you are on about the pin that holds the trap open; then I know. The trap in the wireframe is in a closed state so the pin needn't be positioned through the hole. It's just resting on the spring :)

I had the trap unset in the wireframe to fit it into the image nicely. Plus it shows that I used a twist deformer on the springs along with an Xpresso tag to link it's rotation/deformation to the top half of the trap's rotation so the spring moves with it ;P

Thanks for that though, And great observation :D

DarkBoost: Great model. How did you create all those rounded edges? The wireframe isn't very clear.Actually, his wireframe is very clear. Since he modeled it with mostly splines... that is the way a wireframe should look... it's a lot different than modeling with polygons. I'm not sure exactly how he did it... but if you use the Bevel Profile modifier in 3D Studio Max, you can lay out splines and have then conform to the shapes you lay out for them. Here's an example (the green shape was used to define the rounded edges):

basically you will put cheese just past the hole at the top, when the mouse moves over the hole, the metal claw will rotate into the hole and the next claw will move into it's place. the claw will also act as part of the 'cage' at the back of the box.

Had a couple of hours to play around today, luckily this challenge is great.

2 Needles wired with plenty of mouse paralyzer on this swing arm, triggered when the mouse stands on the x-button, laced with cheese. Plus the vac n' store.

1). Mouse touches UBER pressure sensitive x-button
2). With mouse-defying speed, the arm slams down, needles enter mouse...thus pinning it...then a copious amount of paralyzer is pumped into the mouse through the numerous pipes and "poison" containers.
3). When injection fluid is empty, mouse is euphorically paralyzed, and the super vacuum inhales the euphorically paralyzed mouse up the ramp, into the intake vent and stores it inside.

This allows the trapper either to kill the mouse at his or her leisure, or take the trap outside and free the rodent.

patent pending.

my entry for this week :) kinda of an unusual mouse trap (the owner must have some sympathy over mice :p) mechanism is as follows : mouse enters ---> mouse needs to chew the wires in order to get to the cheese ---> thus wires get cut and the door closes :D

DahWan : i like the cheese...but, how can u trap a mouse with that?

Trimyr
08-08-2006, 01:23 PM
andrewf1 that's a nice looking mouse trap. Almost enough to make a mouse want to be captured.

I did this mostly with splines, hence the confusing wireframe images. I went back to the splines for one shot to show more of what it looked like before all the extruding.

The Tomcat multiple mouse catcher seems to have it's inner workings concealed, at least from the one angle-low resolution product picture that everyone seems to have. I tried modeling a bit of it anyway, but didn't bother texuring it as no one will see it. Mostly I put it in to fill some time and so no one's completely clueless as to how it works. Apparently you're supposed to wind the handle a few times and let it just sit. The doors on each side are one-way, so once a mouse is inside he's trapped until he gets swept into the holding area. When you've got enough mice, just lift the lid and deposit them wherever you see fit.

Software: 3DS Max
Modeling: 50 minutes
Texturing: 10 minutes

Well after finding this site I wanted to get into the action. I'm amazed at what some people are able to come up with in such a short time. So after 2 days of learning I figured I give it a go. I used 3ds 8, took me 60 mins to model, and 25 mins to apply textures. I still wasn't quite done with what I hoped to get done. I wish I could have made a string/rope to go from the handle around the hook and down to the cheese. Couldn't figure out a good way to do it. Suggestions would be appreciated. Everybody has done such a great job with this project, I enjoyed looking through them.

The transformator reduce the electric cell voltage, and limit it to don't be dangerous to a man, but for a little mouse it's deadly.... so it don't trap that mouse, when it pteps on that round area with cheese, the electric just kill it.:D Simply but evil

Hey all!
I'm back again after a long time away,
I've actually been too busy studying (I got a place on a Computer Animation Course and just finished my first year ^^) to model anything worthy of posting, but now I'm on my summer break I thought I would give Speed Modeling another shot.
Here's my entry,

It's a mammal trap that I have at home (I prefer the humane method of rodent removal :smug: ). It's called a 'trip trap' in case you were wondering.
It works by opening the front gate, which just catches on the trip mechanism (the white part), once a small creature touches the trip bar, the gate shuts and is locked by the green part (it falls slighty and locks into place).

Software: Maya 6.0
Modeling Time : 60mins
Texturing Time : quite a while, first time using caustics (think it might be a little OTT :haha: )
Rendering Time : around 7mins

Hope you like it!

Hey guys & girls,

this is my very first post on this awesome website, and also the very first speed modelling contest I have entered. The idea is the mouse will try to eat the cheese and set off the pressure sensor, which will trigger the rocket via the wire and control box. Due to time I didn’t put much effort into the control box thing. I used Lightwave 8.

Cheers,

Sandhal from Oz

It's a shame really, there are some decent models that don't count because they aren't posted properly, why are you going to spend an hour or more working on something for a competition and the let yourself be disqualified because you didn't follow the format?

The Ground Anti Rodent Device or G.A.R.D for short, developped for the US military to combat Food Terrorism.
Highly deadly and should only be used by trained personel. It has a lazer guided trap mechanism and a com dish to communicate to base so that the operators know at all times wich traps have been set off and where they are.

Future versions are in development, for example a tracked or wheeled version so that it can self-deploy into so called "high risk areas" and a mine version to be used against rodent armored vehicels.

The widget timer linked in another topic came in handy. :)

Ok this is my first time participating in this. So here goes:

time: 50min (I didn't include render time, which I think may have gone over 60 by a little) Including texturing and modeling.

Software: 3ds max 8, vray, Photoshop.

The idea: I wanted a really non-conventional mousetrap and I drew a few ideas and I thought this one was brutal but simple and I could model it pretty well in an hours time. :D You can't see it too well in this picture I think but the door has hinges and has spikes inside the bottom.

frost000
12-08-2006, 07:01 AM
Blanktarget, the texturing and rendering time is not included in the modeling time. you can spend 10 hours on the textures if you wish as long as the model was done under 60 minutes.

lclevistus

My first time here, my trap is based in a traditional one and adapted to kill pc mouses, i don't really know if works with an organic mouse
Software: 3DSMax 7
Modeling time: 55min
Materials and textures: 30min
Render Time: 10min (light tracer)

-R3D-
12-08-2006, 07:56 AM
Here's a 3rd from me. It's a modernised old "humane" trap. I made it with extrude and sweep splines (apart from the staples) If I had longer I would of converted the staple edge to a spline then extruded that, but I dont think I would have been able to do that in 2 minutes.. Like before, I also used Xpresso to link the spring twist with the door rotation ;P

Oh yea, Sorry about the 90 degree wire, it was the only way to get a big enough wire image and still show the different angled renders well enough. I hope this is ok...

I'm assuming most know how it works, but if not, you put the bait on the bottom spikes on the lever, and when the mouse pulls at the bait, bosh, it snaps shut :)

Hope you like it.

App:: Cinema 4D 9.5
Modelling:: 58 Minute
Texure & Light:: Too long, 2 attempts at it, was gonna go for old style, but went for new/modern instead. Can't go wrong with new anyway:)
Render:: ~27 Minutes Each, Blurred metal killed it, but it's worth it.

blanktarget
12-08-2006, 09:07 AM
yeah I found out the texture time wasn't included. I rushed mine a bit I could go back and make it look better since the model was fairly simple to begin with too. I just like doing these to keep improving my skills, and hey, if I did both in under an hour that's pretty good huh?

my second entry...i worked kinda slowly at this one, was almost on the verge of not completing it in the given time, but thank God for cloning and instancing (lol :p)...anyway, the idea is simple....cheese is put in the middle and on both sides of the cheese are some buttons/triggers which activate the closing device :)

works realy simple.
mouse walks through the laser => cheesegate made out of plastics
falls down => mouse is able to eat cheese and look through the
cheesy holes in the gate :)

I've made one more entry, it's a mouse maze trap, the little dude crawls into the maze and the door shuts behind him straight away with a sensor, then he has to run around in the maz, then if he finally gets to the end of the maze, and finds the cheese, the door at the end of the maze with a sensor also slams shut, it's just an excuse to model a maze really lol :) I'm 3/4 through the rendering, i'll post the entry soon. Strangely it's only my 2nd entry for this weeks SMC, somewho i couldn't think of many good idea's and most i thought of were already made, and i didn't feel i could better them.

Post coming soon, and in the last day of the challenge too :)

OK, my 2nd and most likely last entry for this 2 week challenge. Looking forward to tommorow's unveiling of the next SMC. All relavant info on the render. Thanks CG :)

Harmless Mouse Trap #2.

Mouse gets ontop of the cage. Sees the cheese cube and grabs it. But while grabbing it the mouse also pulls out the stick that hold the two gates closed. BAM, gates fall open and mouse is traped inside the cage.

like this concept but would've been far more dynamic with a few menacing looking spikes at the bottom of the cage

ClassicGamer : nice one, very nice! but one thing...how the mouse will get out of the maze? i think theres no way out from ur maze, its already closed when the mouse enters...hehe

Finally managed to register

I liked the idea of a mouse catapult that I found on google so I felt like inventing this. Ran out of time so I had to rush the thing that the mouse will stand on. Also messed up the render. I accidentally applied some weird filter without noticing it and that's why the grey material turned out grey, ugly and most of the reflections are gone.. it used to be white and shiny.

Anyways, I also included a screengrab wireframe just in case the splines don't make sense to people.

Also a last minute entry from me... dont have time to rerender it, so you must live with some not-so-beautiful reflections (table texture was a bit too reflective ;) ).

Idea for this spooked in my head since this challenge was announced. ;) Wasn't sure if it would classify as trap or not, but since I see some other fun entries posted and also lots of traps which prolly never would work in real live I gave it a go. ;)

If you wonder how this trap is supposed to work exactly... I scanned the manual and uploaded it to my homepage: Manual (link) (http://tokai.binaryriot.org/pictures/3d/sc_w110_1-alittlepain_manual.jpg)

tokai

C5D - Welcome fellow C4d modellers, and brilliant entry, very nice use of splines, and a lovely render :)

h2k1 - yeah you may be right, the mouse enters the far right and the the first door with a sensor falls, then when the mouse finally gets through the maze, and passes the second door falls, once the mouse is in the glass box with cheese :)

slicer - nice entry, and great modelling :)

tokai - excellent modelling, very very good indeed, and brilliant render, well done :)

Bring on SMC 112! :)

It means he's going to get slapped with one if he bugs the mods about judging the contests. :) I don't think you want that award (it's like a Razzie).
