finaly i got time to finish the modeling, first the work and second i dont have internet in my home, i like to talk more with you guys, great 3d artists hier and great jobs.Anyway, i started with a quick skecth to have a idea of the topology and parts of the model...use more lines in the face and the glove.
RAWK777:Cool character and well done model.
PEDRO TOLEDO:That´s it man, right hier in BRAZIL, since i know your work on the assasin contest, i always see your site and learn with your polyloops. And about the bruce lee, i really like the face of your model.
Simple_minded:The greatest topology and use of polyloops of this contest, congratulations. And great draw concept.
GRA7:Another brazilian artist, great job man, i like to see another work, do you have a portifolio site?

big toe: if you have 2 objects, i thought using 2 768x768 maps would add up to the area of a 1024 map. although its not directly a multiple of two, its the sum of 512 and 256. would using a map of this size cause a problem?

nope (4) 512 maps equal 1024. you have to think about the space as a square. go into photoshop make a 1024 cavas, then see how many 512 squares you can fit inside.

Okay, game engines may like the perfect square of 2 textures, but this is a comp, and on the first page there's a line about this issue in the instructions:
"Textures:
(1) 1024 x 1024 texture, you can chop that up into whatever you want."
-I don't want to redo the unwrapping, and I don't want to resize my texture to 512*512 because it would loose some deital.
-Ohh, and Omnicypher an 1024*1024map can be chopped up into two perfect square map but not ito 768*768maps because that's 18times a 256*256map and an 1024texture is 16times a 256*256map -> Your solution will be two 724*724 texture.

That's true, I said chop it up whatever way you wanted. I was just saying in the future, you should keep your textures spaces at a multiple of 2.
And no, you can't chop a 1024 square into 2 perfect squares. its 4 squares.

You could make 2 512*1024, but that would be rectangle :p

im glad i didnt go through with my original idea to give my fat ninja a sword. i would have probably choped it into 724 maps and had to redo the uvs a third time! or maybe i could have just resized them. i would probably drop out if i had to do all that uv work that many times.
p.s. when is the subject for the next low poly competition forum released?

MY COMPUTER CRASHED!!! ARG!! i lost everything. i can still enter the images that i posted of my work in progress but none of those are that great. i dont have any pictures of it rigged or in the japanese style house i made for him :( i havent even re-installed photoshop or 3ds max yet. i even lost my recomendations to college and a portion of my portfolio.luckily i backed up my portfolio about a month ago on a cd. today is not my day. tomarrow doesnt look good either :(

28-08-2006, 06:20 AM
you need a backup drive(extrenal), something that is huge, about twice the size of your normal drive, thatway you can keep adding to it, before you need to get another one.
omnicypher
28-08-2006, 06:45 AM
before i would get a backup drive i would have to get some more ram or a better computer. my 7 year old computer slows to a crawl when i open photoshop and 3dsmax at the same time because i have only 128MB RAM. that acctually might be part of the reason it crashed.this will have to be my final pic for this competition:

BiG ToE-3DT
28-08-2006, 07:55 AM
the rules say you need a texture, but you can still post it in the final thread, for fun.
But, did your computer crash and with it your harddrive. So you lost everything. Or did it just freeze up, then you reinstalled windows to get it to start again.
Not sure what your budget is but they got 500 dollar computers you might want to look at, before you spend any money on ram.
omnicypher
28-08-2006, 08:34 AM
i reinstalled windows. i dont remember it ever saying my files were being deleted so they might be here somewhere. do you know of any way i might retrieve them? that would be a real lifesaver!!
de4dy
28-08-2006, 08:40 AM
If u just installed windows without format or any of the deleting part then just go to C:/ and there should be everything u had with the installed files.
PS:thats hove i solve it when my pc crashes (so at one time i hade 10 windows installed on my pc because i was too lazy to reorganize everything :) )

About the textures, yes you will need to have the texture for everyone to see. But you dont have to post it as an image, you can link to it, to keep your post looking clean.

you really late but if you can push out a model in a day then go for it.
im just going to submit my bare models... i had a really hard time uvwmapping, everything was stretch and i had no idea what i was going to do with the texture. since both models were cartoons and everything was flat and detail-less adding any detail was disaster..
senatorpain: how do you get your uvwmapps to be so uniform. straight edges and everything is normalized and such.
everyone else: alot of great work, keep it up and get them done. :/

Also try making the ambient color orange or red so her shades in skin will not turn into gray. (Or try experimenting lights)
And her shoulders looks odd in some pics.

Guys,
I´m really sad, but it looks like
I´m not going to finish my model
for this contest. I tried so hard
but I wasn´t able to make my
character´s head. Made lots of
heads, tried diferent techniques
and nothing. I changed from Ryu
to Green Lantern, because I found
a good model sheet. It took me
few minutes to do the body,
but the head... I just can´t make
the things right, the loops, etc...
So, that´s it. Good luck and
congratulations for all the
great works.

Bump->gray=normal white=up black=down raight?
That's it. Even if it isn't, its not a big deal to invert the colors ! (CTRL-I in photoshop, or in the map pannel somewhere in 3DS)

this may not help too much, but it might give you an idea of one way to start a head.

I need to see a screen grab.
But while your doing that, make sure your texture size is 1024, and make sure your make freaking out by the way it looks in the viewport. Is it blurry in a render too.

Hey Spartan-117, Same thing happens to my textures. In my Max studies ,I manage to figure some stuff out. So it's blurry in the viewport, but fine in the renders? If so, I think it may be the video driver settings. Customize/Preferences/Viewports/ and 'choose driver'. Hope that helps :P

sparton: i had the same problem with my uvs before. the way i fixed it was
1) open your Edit UVWs window
2) click on options then advanced options
3) change the Render Width and Render hieght from 256(default) to 1024
i hope this picture helps:

3Danny you could improve your texture a lot if you add saturated colors to the texture and blend the shadows a little bit...but the model is good loonking. Conrgats everyone!

Sweet thanks for the advice. i'm not going to make the dead line as i still have to bone the model, which i dont have a clue about, it's late and i have a full day tomorrow so no time left.
I did learn alot from this and i will try to finish the model off readying myself for the next comp.
Heres as far as i got. DONT LAUGTH! its my first character model & my first character skin. Dont think it would have won anyway, its a little behind the standard and missing detail :(
ps. you were right, the render does clean the texture up

after making ziek i made a pretty ugly looking minatour that was my first fully rigged and animated creature. then i made the chris farley model for this competition. it was much better than anything else i did because i had a much higher polygon budget.ziek and the minatour were both less than 1500 polys! it was also the first time a made five fingered hands and a correctly deformable face. this competition gave me a huge boost into better creations. i cant wait till next comp! :)

Here I am, a day late and a dollar short again. I lost track of what day it was on Friday thinking it wasn't due 'til Sunday. I decided to finish it anyway here it is. I didn't get a chance to rig it unfortunately:
Asajj Ventrass "Clone Wars" style

I used Flash 8 and Photoshop CS2 to make these textures. I'm way more comfortable using Flash's vector shapes than Photoshop's. I scaled them down to 512 to save space in the post:
