Low Poly Mini Contest #8
Subject – Movie Star/Toon Character
ALL WIPS AND CONCEPTS ARE TO BE KEPT IN THIS THREAD.

Guide Lines:

22 of you voted for it, now is the time for at least 22 of you to model it.

We are kicking up the poly’s for this one, 3,000 tris to make a movie star/cartoon/comic character. This character can be anyone you want, from the big screen (movies), to the small screen (TV). It can even be a cartoon character, or comic book character. It could even be a video game character, it’s up to you. You will need to use your poly’s wisely. You want your character to stand out from everyone else’s. So try picking someone no one else will. This wont be easy.

The specs for this competition will be like those of the past (3,000 total tris), it may sound like nothing compared to the environment comp we did, but to people that have never made one before, this is a lot. You get a month, so do not try and over due it. I want people to finish.

Above all,
Have Fun!

Judging: 2 categories of judging will apply. 10 points possible for each:

Model – How well the geometry is structured, how well it looks like the subject.
Texture – How well the texture space has been used, and how well the texture is painted/applied.

DUE DATE: September 2nd: a Saturday, 4 weeks and a few days from today!

Idea:
Find your favorite movie star/comic character/cartoon character, and model the mess out of it. But think carefully, you don’t want to go modeling the same person as someone else. If you do, people will judge the two of you, before they judge yours against the rest.

Poly limit:
3,000 Tris Total. You can do whatever you want with these, just don’t get carried away and don’t exceed the 3,000 Tri Limit.

Textures:
(1) 1024 x 1024 texture, you can chop that up into whatever you want. I think for this one bump maps will be ok, normals are OK TO GO, but you still need to go all out in your texture.

Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.

Final Pictures:

You must provide a screen grab of your wire frame with your poly count, with the actual model and all its parts selected. Please don’t Photoshop your Poly counter with a bogus count. Make sure you post all work in progress, including final poly counts and wire frames in the work in progress thread.

Also, provide at least 2 rendered pictures of your model. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better.

A Final Entry Thread will be up and waiting around the end of the third week/beginning of fourth week. Don’t forget to submit your work by posting it in the final thread.

Good luck everyone!
BiG ToE.

Meh, and I was hoping it would finally be a competition I could join D:

Humans are my biggest weakness so far when it comes to 3D.

The brief is a star/character, so you don't _have_ to do a human. There's been plenty of famous non-human characters in films. Think aliens, robots, monsters, animals (Disney would be a good example here); basically anything that was more than memorable and a character. Even the cars from Cars would count to my mind as they are the characters of the film.

I'm going to try an do something off-kilter for this, which means some planning and thinking is required first.

Good luck all :)

This is great! I love the idea!

Actually there's someone I've always wanted to model and now, finally, it will be the perfect time to do: Bruce Lee!

ps: Big Toe, on the rules it says 1028 px maps... I believe you wanted to say 1024.

madmenno
04-08-2006, 08:39 PM
This gonna be hard! I'm gonna try for a commic character first. If that won't work i'll just try a simple cartoon character. I wish i had 3000 tri's to spend for my monster.

good luck everyone

This is a good advice. Also because of the polycount.
3000 tris is not so much, people should avoid too fat/big characters, with too many props and clothes if they are going to a realistc look. Otherwise the silouet will probably get too faceted.
But if you're going to a cartoon/stylized look, of course, you won't need to focus on this issue.

fixed it pedro. 1024 it is.

True, I need to think more like that :P
I still have problems with all kinds of characters though, be it cartoon-style or realistic. Mainly because I don't know anything about anotomy.

I might give this one a try either way though! :D

Edit: Quick questions, would videogame heroes/characters also go under this category?

Edit: Quick questions, would videogame heroes/characters also go under this category?

I would say only if there has been a movie or TV series featuring them. This would make something like modelling Bob Hoskins as Mario ok, but not just redoing Mario as Mario from the games. Not my call, but the brief says not...

Edit: Ok, I stand (or in this case, sit) corrected!

not quite sure what that means...am i allowed to use a 1024 x 1024 texture for diffuse, a 1024 x 1024 texture for normals, a 1024x1024 texture for bump, or do i have to chop that up?

jec1183
05-08-2006, 03:21 AM
Yes you could do a 1024 for each map if you wanted but what he ment by chopping it up is this.

512-head
512-body
512-arms
512-legs

Or
3x512= character
1x512= accessories

even though i dont get it, 4x 512 = 2048 ?

4 x 512 when talking squared texture space doesn't equal 2048, it's 1024.

To under stand it better, take a 1024 canvas in photoshop, then take a 512 canvas, color one in. Take the 512 one brng it into the 1024, now see how many times it fits.

I think his hair is abit to high, but that's easy to fix

Now, does it look like Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving)?

Hmm, I'm in need of a lil' help here. I think I got the shape of the head ok now (Although he's missing jawbones, something I just can't seem to model), but how exactly do I model eyes/eyelids/all of that?

Usually when I model, I just make them very primitive, like they've done in WoW. Eyeball is in the head-texture and a plane in front for blinking, etc.

On this guy, I kinda need something more. One of his main-characteristics are those crazy eyes.

All ideas greatly appreciated :P

Edit: Actually, I need a lil' more help than that. How exactly do I get the texturesize to 512x512? >>; Usually, I just set up my UV, screenshot it, then paint over it. Not caring about the size. How would I make it become exactly 512x512?

frostsnake
06-08-2006, 04:01 AM
arneoog(wow you also from norway..so many)- your model is looking smooth  , why not post the wireframe? and 1400 just on the head is much i guess.

Rhauk-your going all out :dunno: nice! here is some info on edge loops on faces ,the on on the left is more "simple" than the right one, but with your model I guess you should have less polygons than in this example, like on the nose, ears and stuff..

Edit: texture problem..what prog are you using ?

BiG ToE-3DT
06-08-2006, 04:02 AM
Rhauk: your uvw layout will be squared no matter what.

What program are you using? In max 7 and 8 you can render out the uve's to whatever size you want. in 6 you do the basic screen grab, then in photo shop you use the crop tool to select the square, then right click the little area above the image, go to canvas size. Then put in the size you want.

Rhauk
06-08-2006, 04:09 AM

BiG ToE-3DT

you might not want to texture anything until your done. If you start uv unwrapping now, when you add any geometry the uv unwrap will no long work.

Real Name: Wade Wilson
Occupation: Mercenary
Legal Status: Citizen of Canada, with a criminal record
Identity: Secret
Place of Birth: Canada
Height: 6 ft. 2 in.
Weight: 210 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: None
Known Powers: Deadpool possesses the normal strength of a man of his age, height, and build who engages in intensive regular exercise. Deadpool's only known power is his superhuman healing factor, which is a recreation of the one possessed by the mutant Wolverine. He is an extraordinary hand-to-hand combatant and is skilled in several unarmed combat technique. Deadpool employs a number of weapons, including various blades and guns, which he utilizes as both a master marksman and swordsman. He also relies on a teleportation device to whisk him in and out of danger.

So here's a little presentation of my project. The picture of deadpool I added is bit cartoonish. My model is going be more like Deadpool seen in Deadpool comics #1-4. I have already modeled the torso and legs and parts of the head but I need to do some more poly cleaning before I can show it. It was a struggle, but I think I have finally decided on someone:

His name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And he will have his vengeance, in this life or the next.
Otherwise known as Russell Crowe from the film Gladiator.

My other options were Alec Guiness as Obi-Wan Kenobi (who ironically would have hated the fact that someone modeled him in that character), Peter Weller as Robocop, or Scorpion from the Mortal Kombat series of games/movies/tv. Feel free to take any of those if they inspire you. I'm actually a little surprised that we aren't getting more live movie characters considering how many options there are (just think of how many great characters there are in the Star Wars movies alone). But hey, that's everyones own choice and I'm looking forward to seeing the final results of all the entries.

you can, but it would be more effective if you did just one characater usin the total limit. If you have to do two, do them one at a time, then you can do your final renders with both in the picture.

Just saying, I'd rather you go all out on one, then do half as good on two.

okay...now Im feeling down...I started to model Monkey D. Ruffy, from One Piece, 2 days ago....I'm half way now....and just noticed that someone else is going to do it to....big-toe...can there be two of the same?...I really don't want to start a new one....

andrei313

you don’t want to go modeling the same person as someone else. If you do, people will judge the two of you, before they judge yours against the rest.

So, I think you can do that. If you are modeling for fun, portfolio or practice don't start a new one. If all you want is to win... I would model something else :)

I got so excited with my character that I had to start doing something... Here is a quick blocking of the forms:

Animaleante, I see you've started with a box... For a character that is going to have 3000tris it is a lot easier if you start with 8 sided cylinders for the torso and legs, and 7 sided cylinders for the arms... and finaly... a box for the head and hands.
Here is a nice video tut about blocking the forms: http://www.mr-chompers.com/tutorial/video/massblocking.zip

Smoothing Groups
Be sure to have the same smoothing groups on the polys...
Here is a tut for that:

BiG ToE-3DT
07-08-2006, 07:31 PM
in max under the editable poly scroll all the way down till you see smoothing groups, but before you do this you need to be in poly mode or element mode. In poly mode you can select the parts of the model you want smooth, in element mode to whole model is selected. Once you select the parts, click one of the numbers in the smoothing group area.

andrei313
07-08-2006, 08:17 PM
I would say just make your model look nice, and work like you are used to but don't use Mesh Smooth. When it is finished see what is the polycount and start to cut down in the areas that it looks the same from a distance without detail untill you are under the 3000tris limit.
Keep the highpoly too... Who knows... maybe you have time to make a normal map for your model.

any one what is the best way of making a low poly head??

I start with the basic loops (eyes, mouth, and forehead/chin), and fill in the gaps from there. It's really essentially the same as making a high-poly head, but just be more conscious of what polies you're putting where. Make sure every poly has a purpose (so don't have some that just blend in).

thx BiG ToE Ill try
PS:how do u make a bump just curious

A bump map is a grayscale map that demonstrates how the lighting will affect any particular point on your model. If the map is black at a certain point, it will simulate no change in topology. If the map is white, it will simulate a lifted area. And, of course, grays fit in with this in the middle.

A typical way to start one is, when you've finished your color map, change the color map to grayscale for a base. Then you can adjust the levels and add details to your liking. There's really no one way to make a bump map, but converting to grayscale is one way to start.

Update

EDIT:I have one small critique for you, as a fan of Sonic since my childhood: The spikes on his hair start closer to his head. The way you have it, the spikes are starting a little too far away from his head. I'd try moving them in a bit. Otherwise, it's looking good.

I worked on Alice a little today, but not too much. I finished up the hair and tweaked a few verts in the face. I still have to work on her nose a little bit more and I'll consider myself done with the face for now. Right now I'm only down to her collarbone, so I don't think an update is necessary. I'll post tomorrow when I'm further. My current tri-count is 1059.

EDIT 2: freesupra, I just wanted to say that your model is coming along really well. Even if I didn't know who you were modeling, I'd be able to figure it out in a snap. Nice job.

I'm kinda late, but I've finally decided on what to model:

I searched for a character that was at the same time iconic (easily reckognizable), doable (in terms of low-polygon modeling), and available...

Indiana Jones:

Thanks. I'm not sure yet how I'm going to do the flames. I will try with some planes and opacity, I hope it will look nice that way. The problem with the lightsabre glow is that they flare it out near the base and thin it out near the top. If you just use a generic glow on an object it will stay uniform through the whole thing. I agree with the X plane technique that frostsnake mentioned, with one small addition... group the two planes together, and then spin it at one full rotation per frame down the long axis. If you turn on the motion blur it will seem more solid and won't see the seams (used to do laser beams and gun flashes like that in Lightwave). Yoda is looking great Hilm, keep it up. simple_minded your Harley Quinn is looking really nice as well, great hands!
