Hi All,

As well as the colour maps we also require you to create a bump map to accompany them which should be saved as a greyscale image. Below you will find some example images*of*how they should look*together with some*guidelines detailing methods through which they can be created. Also be aware of the fact that they should take a fraction of the time it takes to produce the colour map - KEEP your PSD layers intact as this will be immensely helpful when creating the bump map by streamlining the process*and saving much time and effort !

When creating a bump you cannot simply convert your colour map to a greyscale image and think it will work. You have to look at the colour map and determine which are the parts that pop out more and which parts are set further back. As you can see from the example the darker areas of our map are bumped down negatively on our 3d surface, making it look as if the surface has carved grooves in it, and the areas that are lighter in our map have a positive influence on our surface therefore appearing nearer the eye. You may also notice that we have used gradients in our bump map. These are handy if you need to create a sloping or curved section in your map to soften the edges on objects such as rounded cobbles where there is no sharp edge. Please note if you do not need to create a slope or a curve then don't use gradients. You will also find the High Pass filter very useful in reducing tonal detail that appears on the same plane but will inevitably be irrelevant on a bump map.*Hue*differences on a colour map are not consideration when making a bump map - think purely in spatial terms and about which areas recede and which protrude forward towards the viewer.

If you have any questions regarding making a bump map then please let us know. On sending in your maps could you please send them in with your name and how long it took to create both texture to rich@3dtotal.com

Thanks

Well... two days from my deadline, and I finally found my way on here. It looks like a lonely place. Bear with me as I'm not used to communicating this way. Hello, Darksword! I'm on the other side of the planet, in the USA. So what are you working on? I'll post some samples of what I've got tomorrow... but now... time to sleeeeeep...
