hello there friends: hope things are fine with all of u...:).
here i bring u the 51st Speed Painting Challenge, starting today and ends on the 2nd of Sept. Saturday, 2006.
the topic includes some dramatic scene, with atmopshere. u can have an interesting perspective and play with the scale of the scene.

Topic: UFO On A Futuristic City.

its like a city being invaded. remember uve to take care of the city/buildings, a UFO, along with a futuristic look. and not to forget "UFO" being the centre of interest, with a background playing an important part as well. u can add stuff from your mind, that goes with the given topic. be creative...:).

start painting and posting, u got time till the 2nd of Sept, voting starts after that.

each person can submit upto 3 artworks but kindly do remember to mention your final, votable entry.

Rules: http://forums.3dtotal.com/s...ead.php?t=24525

all the very best...cheers all...:).

Cheers dude, I will have another go soon. I've surfed on 3dtotal for years, i've never done much posting though. Love the site.

Ok round two. This is my entry.

I used 3ds max to set up the scene and I used a geometric bomb to blow up a rectangle. Independence day style.
I then Photoshoped in the atmosphere and added some effects. I wasnt sure if i was allowed to use a 3d program so I understand if this entry doesnt count.

The whole process took about an hour.

Voting Procedure

:*poly:...hi there everyone...this is regarding how voting would take place from now on, starting from this challenge.

Only those who take part by submitting their entries for the challenge would be allowed to submit their votes. votes from all those who wont be taking part in the challenge, wont be considered.

to avoid confusions, only vote if u post an artwork.

that's a bad idea :(, i liked voting here, guess ill have to post somthing :P,(i wanted to get better before i start enterying speed painting :P).

BTW

Cant we do somthing like this:

You have exactly one week to post your entry, No more, no less
then the voting starts.
and WHILE we are voting(1 week for voting), a new challange starts at the same time.

this way we could have more challanges.

and it can be like a secondary speed challange, you dont have to give out prises on it.
maybye just a little mark that you won it for your website :P, just like in 3d.

so, what do you think waheed?

waheed nasir
21-08-2006, 05:47 PM
alrite illegal...first of all, u get better when u work, post, get suggestions and work on them, why wait? so please go ahead and post and then vote. i think this is the right solution for the moment.
regarding your other point, speed paintings are running smoothly and regularly, at times things do get a bit late, but its going on well. its just that one has to be lil co-operative i guess. sometimes situations appear that take time to get clear. i hope u understand. and regarding secondary challenges, lets keep it like the way it is. otherwise things would keep on getting complicated. lets not change the whole format...:).

wargrafix

Excellent suggestion waheed. That sure clears stuff up!

artecnl: What can I say? You can literally feel the eeireness of the ufo hanging silently over the city. excellent work man.

some suggestions regarding picking your favorites (my subjective opinion).

just thought to give u my suggesions on selecting the artwork to vote.

i think its better to judge an artwork according to:

Composition.
Focus.
Light (light and shadows).
Over all design and balance.
Color sense and scheme.
Mood.
Anatomy (for figurative work).
Practicality.
Treatment.
Go well with the given topic.
and last but not the least, it has to be according to the Rules.

these are the points by which i would jugde a piece. again its my personal suggestion, if u agree u can follow this while judging...:).
and i think it would be nice for everyone if we see these points, so every artist would take care of the above mentioned points, hence learning more and showing some good quality work.

cheers all.

Artecnl - And the winner is... lol - only kidding, but another great bit of work from yourself! My only critique is that I don't really like the UFO in the for-ground, Maybe its just me but given the perspective of the rest of the image it just doesnt seem quite right, It may have looked good with a few more in the background either same size or smaller then the second UFO, and no big UFO. But then i suppose it would lose its focus! mmmm - Thats my only crit though, love the lighting and atmosphere of the piece.

Voting Procedure

:*poly:...hi there everyone...this is regarding how voting would take place from now on, starting from this challenge.

Only those who take part by submitting their entries for the challenge would be allowed to submit their votes. votes from all those who wont be taking part in the challenge, wont be considered.

to avoid confusions, only vote if u post an artwork.

sorry for (further) abusing this thread with rules discussion, but I like to make a suggestion. ;) Also in the thread of the previous challenge some other good suggestions were made... so why not combine them smartly?

- everyone can vote
- votes by participants of the challenge count 4 times than votes by non-participants
- votes by the judge panel (3-5 ppl from 3dtotal staff) count 8 times

vote by normal person which didn't take part in the challenge by submitting an artwork:
1st place -> 3 pts.
2nd place -> 2 pts.
3rd place -> 1 pt.
vote by a person which took part in the challenge (submitted one or more artworks):
1st place -> 12 pts.
2nd place -> 8 pts.
3rd place -> 4 pts.
vote by a panel member:
1st place -> 24 pts.
2nd place -> 16 pts.
3rd place -> 8 pts.

And IMHO very important:
- votes must clearly state the post number of the entry, else they don't count (avoids counting votes for a single picture which were given for different entries of the participant).

good example:
1. Rubens (#45)
2. van Gogh (#67)
3. Dürer (#5)
bad example:
1. Rubens
2. van Gogh
3. Dürer

It makes the voting count procedure a bit ( ;P ) more complicated, but also more fair IMHO.

regards,
tokai

hello tokai...that solution that has been announced is simple and less time consuming, what uve give here, is too complicated and would give a hard time. i do thank u for the input though...:). its good for everyone to have a simple, easy solution for things to go on smoothly.

yay! a new judging system!
(i still think that we should have judges, but iīm glad that the threedy-guys
made a decision.)

as i stated in my last post(->last challenge) we need more crits in here.
so iīll start!

artecnl: a good painting. but i would love to see you using more
desaturated colorschemes.
you tend to use very strong colors yet you stay kinda monochromatic.
that limits you. you obviously have the drawing skill,
but you could use more colors in your paintings.
to press the point i used your painting(hope you donīt mind me doing so!)
and added a few more colors and highlighted certain parts
(the man in the foreground/the ufo).
i know, i know. it still looks kinda oversaturated,
but at least itīs not so monochromatic.
donīt avoid realistic colors, they are your friends.
(my version is far from reality too, but you get the point)

Illegal
22-08-2006, 12:26 AM
to be honest i think artecnl's painting gives a better/stronger mood that fits this scene better, it gives kindoff a chaotic mood and your gives halfley this "new start" mood :P

sorry for beeing so unclear but im a n00b so don't you judge me. xD

artecnl
22-08-2006, 12:41 AM
thanks for the critic visuelle and Illegal, and i dont bother at all, :D well, maybe its my work way, i start the paint with 2 colors , always i try to use a simple color palette, i think thats give a dramatic feel to the image, like a filter from a camera, but i not alwas use monochromatic palettes, look my second entry in the beauty and beast challenge, heheh, i know color is fun, :) many thanks for the critic, its the way to learn here.

waheed nasir
22-08-2006, 12:51 AM
good going...for me both of them look good, each one has its own charm. sometimes, if we take care of Tone, then no matter which colors we use, the artwork looks nice. tone and the use of light and shadows, with elements like compositon plays an important role besides colors.

:).

I think both are great, but i always enjoy the work of artecnl, i think he have a very cool way to do the paintings and i think that it's important to have a style, great job artecnl.

crits crits...

Bobbyhiom: as said before, not bad for 15 minutes, but as you probably know, a lot more could have been done. it's interesting that the main "focus" of the painting seems to be the light beams coming from the UFO. I think you could have really played on that theme more. perhaps the rendered clouds in the background could have been complemented by some slight fog in the foreground, and the volumetrics of the UFO lights could have been accented more strongly. overall, I think the picture could benefit most from creating a stronger dynamic between the background, midground, and foreground, as well as a more defined use of lighting. right now, since the foreground buildings are so small and the background is so uniform, the painting looks kind of two-dimensional. also, all the light sources (except the yellow lights) look kind of weak. I think you were trying to make the city look like it's on fire, but it's hard to tell. if you brightened up those oranges and purples, and played around a bit with those white beams, the picture would benefit greatly. I hope that made sense and helped.

artecnl: nice work on the composition of this one. as pasita mentioned, you have a very distinct style, and I can often recognize your pictures even without seeing your name. the painting itself is well-made, but I think visuelle may have a point as far as the use of color. although the simplified color palette with very similar colors makes for some dramatic highlights, for me, in a way, it seems like something is "missing." I felt sort of the same way about your King Kong entry in the last challenge. both of them are well-composed, the lighting is good with deep shadows and strong highlights, and the perspective is also good. in the King Kong one you at least had a few other colors with the red eyes and the very small light purple highlights, but I think a similar approach could have been used in this entry. I think adding light sources of a few other colors could have really added something to that isn't there already. it's hard to describe, but just the visual way that different colors play on each other can add some dimension and a different kind of mood to a piece. right now the reds kind of overwhelm my eyes at first glance, and given the subject matter it feels like there should be at least some other color in there. I guess I can't really explain exactly what I mean, but I hope that makes sense. anyway, good job regardless. it is well thought out and the feeling of the painting is there, and that's what's important.

Great discussion

Hello again everyone.
Been away on vacation and hadn't time for the King Kong challenge. I liked very much that it was a very crowdy challenge with excellent artworks and tons of imagination.
Count me in in this one! I had quite some time to draw a landscape with architecture and I love the challenge.

Waheed made a wise choice about the voting procedure without complicating things at all. I agree with Tokai about typing the number of the post along with the name and I would like to propose apart from that to type also the number of page that this post is located. Example: Thanos (#56)p9
Maybe i'm overdoing it but I think it's easier to navigate and find the posts faster. (or you know any other way?)

Happy painting to everyone who will participate.

Bobbyhiom : Nice Atmosphere. Have to say I prefered the city scape in the first image. I spose perhaps try mix different "makes and models" of buildings - shapes, colour etc.

Artecnl: Top rate as usual, not sure but too much glow brush?

Frostsnake: Lovely futuristic feel. Not sure the UFO (as others have said - looks Identified) is the centre piece of the image. But Im nit picking.

Kovooraj: Very cool. Aftermath/Disaster of a dirty ****** war.... Just wondering if the UFO could do with a little something... dont know what though.

Undertow: Brilliant stuff. You really captured a feeling of doom and massive destructive force.

Bobbyhiom, just wondering if you were to put a devastated cityscape outside the window, it would allow for size/distance/perspective/contrast etc a bit like Wargrafix's view point (and stick a hugh shadow on the ground/over buildings) - but monochrome smashed up drab buildings or various sizes and shapes. Smoke rising....
Move the crack to a different location on the window, it just happens to line up with the UFO - makes it look like he's poking through. Just a few ideas... but then on plenty of occasions Im told im full of sh...

Thanks for your comments everyone!

Annatar: Looks interesting, nice buildings, I like those solid, shiny surfaces, but I think that you should add more light to the spaceship(but It's my personal feeling)and some detail to the smoke. After all..looks very very nice.

wargrafix: Agree with bobbyhiom - Great perspective, but also very hard I think, needs a lot of stuff within the canvas and you manage with it!The city looks great, but the UFO needs a more detail.

Cheers!

Annatar
25-08-2006, 03:41 PM

Annatar
25-08-2006, 03:49 PM
Lukanus: yeah I know what you mean, but I wanted a cold impersonal ship. Windows/lights to my mind make it more... friendly, which I wanted to avoid. I only had the 4 front openings/landing bays/whatever to show that someone was home. The lack of other lights/windows show they aint that nice.

Thanks for all the comments. Technically it is not colourful. Its a reflective black so the colour you see is from light reflected from the surroundings onto it. Yeah, the independence day looks is most dramatic. The movie had cheesy dialogue, but without doubt the best alien ship design and execution to date.

Annatar: very interesting angle choice and atmosphere. How did you get the texture of the ship?

Bobbyhiom: I see potential here. I know what you mean about the graphics tablet, it'll take a while to get used to, but once you do you'll love it! Ok, on the painting. Well, first realign the shadows. Then put some objects like futuristic living room objects to improve the impression. and a bit of reflections on the glass will help.

Koovoraj very nice image, you should putsome highlights to the foreground shapes and make the near shape darker. otherwise, nice work. i like the ufo a lot.

frostsnake, great job you only need more detail in lightning, the shapes are great
maybe some clouds, will be nice. nice work pal.

Undertow. wow i like these ufo a lot, nice composition and mood, about the wacom, yes it worth the money a lot, you should buy one, it will do your paintings much much better, since i got one i think i improve a lot :P nice work my friend.

Lukanus i like a lot the concept of your city, i only siggest you to do is make softer your highlights and some backgrond things such galaxies or clouds, nice job.

wargrafix :D i remember independence day whit this, great image, i like your style, i duggest you to put more solid colors and use a color palette with more shadows. otherwise nice work.

Annatar :D i like your stuff a lot, this look a lot like a Salvador Dali paint .

Hi @ all,

@ Bobbyhiom #2: very fast - but in the other hand a little bit more detail wouldnīt be bad.
# 57: Nice idea. But the Lens Flare is not needed, the light is not strong enough to produce such effect.
The proportions of the father look quite odd. Maybe you should darken the foreground more to
create a more dramatical feeling. Oh yes... the shadow. :dunno:

@ artecnl #8: I like the scenery, very nice. Maybe you should try using more different colours

@ kovooraj #31: Great man. This picture is beautifull. Good composition. :D

@ frostsnake #34: Very nice use of colours and beautifull concept. The only thing hurting my eye are the yellow stripes on the ship :dunno:

@ Undertow #42: Nice picture. I like the design of the battleship it looks like one of the Anti-Godzilla
aircrafts. Cool. :)

@ Lukanus #50: Welcome Luke. Nice first entry, and very nice start in digital painting.

@ wargrafix #53: The perspective is very nice. Maybe it would have been better to blur the buildings in the foreground
and make the ufo sharper. How do you mean Tripod? I think there is no one who will sue you if you use a trianular design.
I used a pyramidical design and I donīt think MGM has the rights on any basic geometrical structure. ;)

@ Annatar #54: Cool perspective. I Like the design of the ship, the textures of it could have been more technical
It looks like its made of stone...

@ r99# 77: Cool idea...

@ Quackles #85: Good one :D

Kreean: nice job. I like the "dune" like feel of the buildings. And very smooth colour palate.

The reason I kept the blurring to minimum was to play up the details on the penciling to the foreground. And the ship lacks detail becuase i wanted the seamless look.

Alright! This is my second entry.I spend whole night painting and tweaking this damn picture, but I'm not happy with it.Ther is something missing in this artwork...I think it is the UFO, it's a bit incongruos to the rest of the composition, but I'm too sleepy to fix it, so feel free to comment everyone and I'm going to sleep! :)

Thanks to all, I aprecciate your comments alot! :)
Yes Dune... ah itīs one of my all time favorite movies, the David Lynch Version of course!
Itīs not exactlly like the book but it has such beautifull scenery and the OST is awesome, everything fits together.
On of my favourite moments is when Paul drinks the Water of Life and becomes the Kwisatch Haderach...
"Father... father, the sleeper has awakened!" ...oh man... what a moment.

@ Lukanus #94: I think that the picture is good.
Speaking of Dune it reminds me of Caladan the Homeplanet of the Atreides.
I like the water alot the foam looks really good
and the smoke that comes from the city is good too.
Hmmm... you say there is something missing... and youīre not happy with it?
There are just few points that confuse me and maybe you too.

The UFO design... actually it looks like a manta (and that is really cool) with tentacles
that are holding a ray weapon... it would be pretty hard to enter the atmosphere with them.
Maybe the ship has a force-field or it can pull them back into the ship... but the weapon?

The fired ray is really devastating the city.
The smoke indicates that this is not the first attack... Maybe you wanted to make a explosion...
But actually there is a rule when you draw a fight in Comics that the impact is never shown.
The Reader never gets to see the actual Punch! They show always the Windup or the Follow-Through.
I donīt know how this rule works for rays, beams, rockets and so on.
When I drew my picture I was in a similar situation, should i draw a beam hitting one building in the city?
I tested it and I was not satisfied with the result it didnīt look believable.
So i skipped it and made it charge the primary weapon... I think that this adds a more dramatical feeling.
One moment before the battle begins, will they make it in time and stop them?
Maybe Waheed could give us some advice refering this?

And the last thing, normally clear water has no colour. What it does is that it reflects the colour of the sky.
If the sky is blue the water should be blue too. In a pitch black night the water seems
pretty black...

I hope I could help you a little bit in finding the thing that youīre not happy with.
Oh yes and try following thing, flip the picture regulary to get not too comfortable with the picture.
The self-crticism tends to get less and lesser the more you watch your picture.

Thanks Kreean for your comment!
1.I'm pretty happy with that ocean, and I know that it should catch the color of the sky,but I meant to make it somewhat green even if that is not compliant with the real physical phenomenon.I just wanted it green:)
2.You're right,it's not the first strike, so there is only smoke and some fires inside the city.:)
3.It's a sci-fi picture, so I think that the physic should be on a second plane.:)
Just unleash your imagination and everything will be great, even if it looks or it seems ridiculous in reference to real world/life.

But I'll keep your tips in mind. Thanks a lot! Regards.

And that thing, that I don't like is the UFO.Its somewhat flat, and to bright. There might be a more richer background...but in the end it doesn't look so bad:P

hi lukanus....looks nice, though i think whats needs work is perspective and scale. the mountain/land is closer to us than the ufo i guess, ufo further behind. but somehow the ufo due to chrisp details and proportion/size and clearity it comes forward, hence making the firing and the gun look odd. that might be me only...:). but there is something thats not easy to describe i guess. i would make the land/mountain bigger, bring it closer, make the ufo smaller, with less less detail and finaly would add a slight motion blurr. take it as a subjective opinion...:).

interesting colors balaji_san...:).

Hi all,

Just a couple of comments for now......

Bobbyhiom (post#2): Very nice for 15 minutes. A little flat but I like the colours. The buildings (silouttes) are better than in your edited one but you could do with some detailed buildings in the middle/foreground. I prefer the UFO in the edited one though. Also you should try painting the clouds instead of using the filter...it would help with the overall look and perspective. Well done.
Post#5: Shame 3D work isn't allowed in the challenge as I really like this one....very simple yet effective. It's almost photorealistic in a surreal kind of a way.. though the texture/bump on the structure is bit off.

Artecnl: Really like this one, mate... and to be honest I think your colour scheme/choice is spot on, given the topic....really gives it a paranormal atmosphere -whereas the recoloured one Visuelle did, (as much as I like the look of that too) the colours there suggest that what is going on in the picture is every-day-life there. Anyway...great detail and light/shadow too. Nice one.

Kovooraj: This one is really great. I especially like the sky texture and colour but also the UFO...simple yet effective. Very moody pic.

Frostsnake: Love the composition, colour and detail in your pic but the UFO could do with being more the centre of attention and as mentioned before, it looks like it belongs there and not 'unidentified'.

Undertow: Very powerful, detailed composition....Looks great!
I'm sure I've said this before but...if you can paint this well with a mouse, you're gonna get some seriously excellent results with a tablet and you'll love it once you get over the initial 20 minutes of getting used to the direct screen positioning of the pen & cursor! I STRONGLY recommend you get one (but definitely a Wacom and preferably a 9X12....the large size is not essential but I have one and it's soooooo much better than my old A5 one). Any tablet anyway will speed up and improve your painting a great deal so basically you'll get even more detail and precision in the same amount of time.

....so anyway ...It's late and I'm too tired to type any more now but I will pick up from where I left and comment on more tomorr......zzzZZZZ

;)

Again thanks for comments everyone! It really helps a lot by creating next artwork!

1.Waheed you're right about the perspective and scale in my picture.I've still some problems, but I'm working on that.

2.balaji_san - good concept, nice matrix like colors, but it needs more detail, maybe try to populate it somehow(I mean the first plane) or add some more highlights.:)

3.arneoog - god one. Next time add more detail and highlights.:)

4.Alletun - I love the colors, I love the clouds, I love the mood...Great job!!!

5.Kreean - Nice piece.I like the depth of field. But it looks to computerlike for me.But I like mood.

6.Artecnl- I'm still waiting for your next entry...:)

Lukanus post#50: I really like this one.....The 'ufo' and the light are really well done. I would like to see the floating city with less scribbles in places (mainly at the edges of the city) as much as I like the scribbley style myself, I feel it takes away from this a bit .....but being a 'speed paint' ...which is obviously the point, it's great!

Wargrafix: Excellent detail in the city and I really like the 'dotted-line effect' of the windows/lights on the ufo. Your choice of colours are quite unique and interesting too. One thing though which looks a bit off is the shape of the ufo...it looks a bit out of proportion.

Annatar: Very powerful perspective in your pic.....draws the eye up to the ufo and makes it look like one gigantic mean sob :)! You've got the reflection down but I think this would rock even more with some shadow on the buildings from the ufo!? Some really nice detail going on there.

Bobbyhiom post#57: Again, nice colour and idea but it's still a bit flat and lacking scale. Try putting in some fast suggestive detail with plenty of light and shadow both inside and outside the window and gety some perspective in there. Annatars merging of yours and Wargrafix pics is a fine example! :)

r99: Cool idea. I really like the design and detail. Your edit is very chaotic...nice!

Quackles: Ah good ol' "shoot the cute ufo while it destroys the tiny buildings below and earn up to 999,999 points for it saga".
I remember it like it was 25 years ago!
Just as well the giant man was well prepared for the likely possibility of attacking ufos with his equally powerful weapon - he's even got mini clones of himself waiting anxiously in the sky, to take over when he reaches 000,000 kills (999,999+1) and gets really annoyed as a result and is bored silly! ;) Good schtuff!

Kreean: Love the speed comic! Awesome ufo, defense ships and city - reminds me of Star Wars too :). One thing I might have done though since it's based in the desert, is add a lot more sunlight (and some light shadows). I think that would finish it off nicely.

Lukanus post#94: I nearly like everything about this picture but I think Waheed summed it up nicely. Also I might desaturate the colour of the ufo a small amount too....It's a slight bit too cartoony (or something...hard to explain) for the rest of the scene. Great job anyways.

balaji_san: Great choice of colour (I particularly like the sky) but the reds and oranges are too sharp and square. Try using the Gaussian blur filter on it just the tiniest amount and you should see what I mean. Keep the buildings detailed and sharp but very slightly blur the lights.

Crits to be continued.......sorry if I haven't got to you yet but I need to go and get a painting done myself :)

Thanks alot for your comments, and keep on with it.

I know that the Last picture was not so good. It was too blurry and there were no details.
The only thing I was satisfied with was the smoke from the vulcano.
But actually I spent too much time on the sky and the smoke... so I ran out of time :(
I doīt think that I will have much time to do a third one, but the for now the first picture will be the votable one.

@ Lukanus # 106: wow, very nice picture. :) The things I like are the clouds, the smoke, the ship design, and the explosions.
What I donīt like is the shadowing of the Jupiter like planet it looks kind of weird.
The filter or texture you used for the dome looks very pretty but on the other hand it looks flat.
Anyways I like this second picture more than your first one.
By the way have the citizens sealed their fate by shooting down this ship? (looks like it will fall directly onto the city) ;)

@ drained spirit # 111, #112: OK, first I like the fact that you are creating a background-story around your pictures. :)
But what I donīt like is that one picture is nearly 1/2 mb big :hmm: . So here is one hint, there is a function in Photoshop (if you are using PS) that is called Save for Web.
Your pictures wonīt loose much quality but they will be smaller (20k to 100k) and therefore it will be much faster and easier to load the site. ;)
Your first picture was very sketchy, and pretty overloaded. It looks like you like your alien very much. So you spend much time
concentrating on his details. But leaving the ships and the city pretty blocky.
That changed on the second picture but just partially. You cloned the ships and the buildings, changed their size and scattered
them across the planet... but again you spent a lot of time on the alien details.
So what am i trying to suggest!? Donīt bother with the alien. Try to concentrate on the ships and the buildings or the city.
I made a similar mistake in my second picture (see why, above). :hurt:

Regards :)

Thanks again for your opinions people.

1.Kreean I was creating my third picture, thinking about:"What will Kreean say about it?...Is it phisically correct?...Will it look naturally if there will be fire without clouds in the background that can suggest that ther is some atmosphere with some oxygen..."Nah...just joking:D. But like I said before, I'm trying to create every next artwork using your, people, advices so many thanks again for your comments! Regards!

2.drained_spirit - Good idea, but the environment and ufos are looking flat.Play more with highlights and shadows, and add some more detail.

Ok...a few more crits (not all yet though...I just can't keep up!)

Arneoog post#100: Nice colours and very clean work. Everything was so peaceful until that **** came along and torched the place :)
One thing you need to keep an eye on is your perspective (as do I...damn perspective ;)).....the horizon looks too high for the angle of the buildings....makes the sea appear to be going up hill! Very good all the same....glad you decided to join in the challenge.

Alletun post#102: Excellent! Love the pastel colours and how you combined the ufo with the city (now why didn't I think of that!?) and detailed every tiny building ;) I can't help looking at the sun though (aaarrrrgh my eyes.....never look directly at the sun, kids ;)) - I don't think having it as a spiral suits the pic but it's just me being fussy. Great work.

Kreean post#103: Some of this image looks great.....other things not so great (though from your own posts later on, you know this already)
The centre-ground should not be blurred while the foreground and background are sharp. I very much like your triangular ships and the volcano/sky but the city structure in the foreground 'looks' like a separate layer (which I'm sure it was)...Layers are no harm (I ALWAYS use 'em) but you'd need to paint over both layers afterwards and integrate more with light/shadow & edge softening (don't over-do the feathered edges though either! :)) Try integrating via a third layer over both of these layers - this would mean you could hide it at any point to check your progress/changes and delete easily if you make some errors but don't notice straight away. Hope that helps you in some way.

Lukanus post#106: NICE!! I like it a lot! One TINY thing is...If you made the foreground (smoke and land) a bit more detailed or sharper than the rest I think it'd be perfect.

I'm finally getting my pic posted :)

So much for trying to speed up my painting. Once I get started, I just can't stop - I imagine most of you are the same. If i get more time I might try to do a fast scribbley one. So anyway this took me about 8.5hrs (yikes!) but I think it was worth it! Photoshop & Intuos3, no ref. I know there are a couple of perspective issues but my brain won't let me fix them  It lost so much detail (I hate that) on resizing though, some of the screw-ups won't be so obvious anyway ;):

A thought popped into my head so I thought Id paint it. I have to say This is my entry rather than the OBEY Monolythic aliens.

I just wanted to have city built like a face (reminiscent of the face on mars) with nice flowing locks :D

Annatar
30-08-2006, 01:57 PM
Crackerlips: Wow man!!! An entry like that is just not fair!! Gives the rest o us no chance. I see the crane in the back ground... looks like the Harland & Wolff yellow crane in Belfast. Is that the Falls or the Shankill?

Quackles: Wah hey! Ahh the finger breaking, button pushing days of yore...

Kreean: I think it was said before but it reminds me of Dune. Cool Area 51'esc UFO

Lukanus #94 : Cool Picture - The UFO + Contrails... Halo'esc?

Balaji_san: Independence day moment. Great use of colour for atmosphere. If more time was taken instead of the red lines, it coulda rocked bigtime.

Arneoog: Good pic. Nice stlye to the city and landscape. In some ways different building shapes woulda been nice but then again... the style might have suffered. Oh Well.

Alletun: Cool, Very very cool. Love the city. But ermm, I hate to ask but wheres the UFO?

Kreean #103: Groovy picture, a bit like "Lord of the rings"/"revenge of the Sith" meets "Tron". The planet looks like hell (ina good way!!!).

Lukanus #106: Nice idea. That UFO looks as if it is still gonna hit the city. Nice mess to clean up :D

Drained Spirit: Cool story line there. Nice to see you kept the colour palette simple. You may want to spend more time giving the pictures greater detail overall. The Syaken are mean looking SOB's

Bobbyhiom: Cool pic, Although to my mind you might have needed to smash the building up a little more.
It does look alittle 9/11 but should that stop you or anyone painting something slightly reminiscent of it?!? ...nah. Besides more people die in wars around the world but no one says we shouldnt paint pictures of the horrors of war etc.
Hope ye all get my meaning. As long as its not done in a mocking way its okay.

Crackerlips - it's really increidible! I love that shiny mirror-like surface:drool:. Like the blur effect inflicted on the building within the green light. But I think taht you should give more detail to the front buildings and maybe some(a little bit) blur to the background. Also I think that the UFO seems to be closer than the building lightned by the green light(perspective problem). Anyway yours and Artecnl's paintings are the best so far.:)

Bobbyhiom - Try to use more colours in your paintings, dont be afraid to play with shadows and highlights.Add more detail. And what I think is the most important don't make much of the outline.Try to think in colours ( I have a big problem with it too;) )

Annatar - I like your idea. It's very surrealistic. What I don't like too much, is the UFO looking somewhat like a magnifying glass(but I think it was your goal judging from the title of your picture). Anyway I like the idea, the face/city, but the UFO is not as good as the rest.(btw. I don't like Halo;) ):)

Glottis - Good concept, nice perspective, very interesting popart-like colors, but add some more details, play more with highlights and shadows.

Cheers! Regards everyone!

Jarratt: Thanks man.....now if I can just manage to get the same kind of result in ...oh...a quarter of the time, I'll be doing well :)

Artecnl: Cheers - Glad you like it!

Wargrafix: Thanks for the encouraging words :)
Yeh... the uploadable file size thing is a bit of a bummer alright! Such drastic quality loss. I'll try to get a larger version uploaded somewhere and post the link if you still want (though it might be a day or two) but I must warn you, you'll be able to see every crappy, suggestive scribble and mistakes aplenty in my pic. In saying that though, there are some tiny things you can't really see since it was resized. They're so small, though, they're kinda hard to see at full size too ;)

Drained Spirit: Thanks very much, mate!
Finally getting around to commenting on your work now - sorry for the delay. Glad to have you in the challenges.
I can't actually see your first pic any more (I did when you first posted it!) Your second entry is very good anyway- I can see much improvement in technique from your first one. Nice detailed scene (and I like how you threw in the story to go with it!). One thing I'd say is to try and ease off the opaque brushes in the foreground and maybe use them in the background instead....(not for the mist obviouly though :)) As you have it, the background is sharp where parts of the foreground are kind of blurry. If you try smaller solid brushes (with a slightly feathered edge) and change the colour to exactly the one you want (as opposed to an opaque brush over the original colour to get the new colour you want). I hope that makes sense. Great ufo design!

Annatar: Glad you like it! I don't know about that, though....your latest entry is pretty class :). I love the idea behind it and how you pulled it off. The 'hair' is my favourite part but I really like the ufo and face city. Great colouring too. NICE!!

Glottis: Very funkadelic - I like your choice of colours and the idea :) As Lukanus says, a bit more highlighting and shadows might help a bit but I like it anyways.

Lukanus: So glad you like & thanks for the crits ..appreciate them :) - I didn't actually give more detail to the foreground buildings for two reasons... I already spent WAY too long on it but also I thought it might take focus away from the ufo. Blur on the background might'nt have been a bad idea though!? I did mention there were a couple of perspective issues but after looking at it for so long they're hard to spot (before it's too late anyway ;)). I regularly flip the picture horizontally & vertically during painting to try and eliminate perspective problems but I still need plenty of practice in that department!

Waheed: Thanks so much. That means a lot coming from someone with your art expertise! :)

Bobbyhiom: Cheers mate!

I know there are still some pics I need to comment on but I don't have the time to do it just now...sorry. Soon hopefully!

Hello all

Thanks alot for the crits! i'll write my own comment post alittle later :)

@Annatar: hmm yeah i should probably have made that alittle clearer. the "UFO" is actually the sphere in the sky. yeah hehe it's not that obvious, but i wanted to go for a more different approach than the classic plate UFO style.

Kreean

Am i to late? I hope not :smug:
Thanks a lot to all for your comments.

@ Bobbyhiom #117 hmm... what should i say... Outlines are bad, very bad enemies ;)
Itīs ok if you want to go with comic style.
But maybe you know King of Fighters video game series. Search for artwork of the 99 or 2000 edition.
They are realistic paintings but they have outlines. They look great! (I think the artist behind them is Shinkiro)

@ crackerlips #119 wow man, thatīs awesome. Yeah there are a few things that are not right.
The lower and the upper part of the ufo have different perspectives and
the mirroring :dunno: of the buildings in the lower part need to be flipped.
Maybe some deph of field would have been nice but in my opinion thatīs your best picture at the moment.
Great work!

@ Annatar #126 Damn, :wall: why didnīt I think about Cydonia on Mars. Thatīs a great idea Annatar. :)
I like the reflections on the water.

@ Glottis # 128 Uff  too much colours for my eyes.
More Detail would have been good. The idea and the perspective look good. :)

Ok thatīs my 3rd picture and my final entry (votable) hope you like it.

Kreean: Thats a pretty good piece. I like the angle of the shot and the colour blending. Light is very clean and a good sense of proportion. Only thing is, it seems to be treading bit long on time though. 8 hours is a tad bit long.

wargrafix - hmm...a city on a rock surrounded by water...I think that I've seen it before ;P IMHO there is definitely too much blue in your artwork, so it looks too monochromatic. The ufo and the city are looking nice(I mean the concept) but...there is too much blue in there:) I also don't like the filter imposed on background ( some kind of distort, glass I think + noise :dunno:).Summarising: god concept:) ; bad color scheme and irritating background:(

zylak - Nice vehicles design. The city is not as good as the rest(but you've excused yourself of this:) ) I think there is not enough depth in your picture beacause of those clouds. They're making the picture somewhat gray/flat.And one more thing...I see there is a scale/perspective problem. The ufo seems closer too the front police vehicles, and because this the rest of the police ships is looking like they're flying beneath the ufo(it's more the scale problem than the perspective).(I'm feeling weird to tell you this in my crippled english-wolałbym po polsku:D-but it's fair when everyone can read and understand our posts, irrespective of home country.)

Cheers everyone!

P.S.: My third painting is votable..If someone is interested ;P

lukanus, I wanted a monochromatic colour scheme, to highlight the overpowering light of the ship. It night backgroung was done purely with hand...no filters. The graular look came from the airbrush tool. As I said I still deciding on the final entry.

Sorry I didnīt comment the last pictures :o

@ wargrafix #138 I think Lukanus said it before, this Noise effect somehow doesnīt fit into the picture. The City could have been a little bit bigger and the ufo smaller. The left dome doesnīt fit to te rest of the city (perspective). The Clouds look good but somehow they donīt fit to the space background. Also the water reflects the clouds on the left side of the picture but on the right side there is a reflected light that is not in the sky.
What I really like about this picture is the ships insect-design and the surreal concept.
Oh I nearly forgot, i see that you are using lot of outlines (maybe they are just leftovers from the sketch). I have noticed that a lot of people donīt like them. But I mentioned it before; Outlines are not bad. There are some very nice pictures outside that are painted in a traditional style and do have Outlines, giving them some kind of Art nouveau look.
I think that your first picture is the better one, although i like the ufo in the second one much more.

@ zylak #143 Nice. To bad that the fog effect hides to much of the picture. The perspective is good and the police-vehicles and ufo look good to. The city could need more detail (but you know that already).
To bad you didnīt had enough time. Maybe you could have made it more darker.
Blade Runner was such a dark movie, I think the only time you see the blue sky is at the end when they leave the city.
Anyways, a good start and welcome.

All in all this was a good challenge. Good C&C and no reference issues ;).
Canīt wait for the next one :)

wargrafix
03-09-2006, 06:57 PM
Fair enough. That noise effect was from the coarse airbrush tool which at first worked great, but around the edges gave problems. With the clouds, I was hoping give a sense of perspective that there was an atmosphere on the planet, epecially with the space background. I agree that my city design came out a bit crappy, seems my experimenting didn't work, lol. I had changed over from my original idea which was this,(note : this is not a submission, its a sketch of what could have been). Oh and thank you very much for all the HMs. I really appreciated it.

hi friends,

I know the challenge is over and the favourites also selected but i have been working on my last and final image of this particular challenge and i completed it a few minutes back. This is well, not a submission; for the challenge is closed. This is the final chapter of the Syaken era, 'The fall of the Syakens'.
